Indian Standard SPECIFICATION FOR

CALCIUM AMMONIUM NITRATE

( Second Revision )

0. FORE WORD

0.1 This Indian Standard ( Second Revision ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 10 January 1985, after the draft finalized by the Fertilizers Sectional Committee had been approved by the Petroleum, Coal and Related Products Division Council.

0.2 Calcium ammonium nitrate is a material obtained by granulating ammonium nitrate with limestone or dolomite. It is also known as ni trochalk and nitrolime.

0.3 This standard was first published in 1963 and revised in 1971. This revision has been undertaken to include another grade containing 26 percent total nitrogen content which is being imported in the country. However, nitrogen content of calcium ammonium nitrate varies fi-om 25 to 26 percent.

0.4 In the preparation of this standard consideration has been given to the need for maintaining co-ordination with the specifications of the Fertilizer ( Control ) Order 1957 and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 ( as amended up to August 1981 ) of Government of India. However, this standard is subject to the provisions imposed under this Order wherever applicable.

0.5 For particle size, the use of IS Sieves conforming to IS : 460 ( Part 2 )-1978” is prescribed. Where IS Sieves are not available, other standard sieves as judged from aperture size may be used.

0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-19607. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

*Specification for test sieves: Part 2 Perforated plate test sieves ( second reoisian ). $Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revisal ).

3.2 Particle Size - The particle size of the material for:

CAN 26 percent nitrogen - 90 percent of the material shall pass through 4-mm IS sieve and be retained on l-mm IS sieve. Not more than 5 percent shall he below l-mm IS sieve.

CAN 25 percent nitrogen - 80 percent of the material shall pass through &mm IS sieve and be retained on 1-mrn IS sieve. Not more than IO percent shall be below l-mm IS sieve.

3.3 The material shall also comply with the requirements given in Table 1.

4. PACKING AND MARKING

4.1 Packing - The material shall be packed in 50-kg bag in suitable moisture-proof containers or as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier. Each bag shall be securely closed.

4.2 Marking - Each bn .g shall bear legibly and indelibly the following information:

a) b! cl 4

Name of the fertilizer;

Name of the manufacturer and his recognized trade-mark, if any;

Percentage of total nitrogen by rnass; and

4.2.1 The containers may also be marked with the IS1 Certification Mark.

NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regu- lations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the require- ments of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by IS1 and operated by the producer. IS1 marked products are also continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.

5. SAMPLING

5.1 Representative samples of the material shall be drawn as prescribed in IS : 6092 ( Part 1 )-1985”.

5.2 Number of Tests - Tests for all the requirements given in 3 shall be conducted on the composite test sample.

5.3 Criteria for Conformity - For declaring the conformity of the lot to the requirements of this specification, the test results on the composite test sample shall satisfy all the requirements in 3.

6. TEST METHODS

6.1 Tests for the requirements listed under 3 shall be carried out accord- ing to methods prescribed in IS : 6092 ( Part 2 )-1985*, IS : 6092 ( Part 6 )-1985* and Appendix A. Reference to relevant parts and clauses is given in co1 5 of Table 1.

6.2 Quality of Reagents - Unless specified otherwise, pure chemicals and distilled water ( see IS : 1070-1977t ) shall be employed in tests.

NOTE -‘Pure chemicals’ shall mean chemicals that do not contain impurities which affect the results of analysis.

APPENDIX A ( Clause 3.3 and Table 1 )

A-l. DETERMINATION OF CALCIUM NITRATE

A-l.0 General - The method is based on the solubility of calcium nitrate in amyl alcohol. Calcium carbonate is insoluble in this solvent.

A-l.1 Reagedts

A-1.1.1 n-Amy1 Alcohol - approximately 4 N.

A-1.1.2 Dilute Hydrochloric Acid - approximately 4 N.

A-1.1.3 Standard Calcium Solution - Weigh I.000 g of calcium carbonate dried at 120 f 5°C and dissolve in the minimum quantity of dilute hydrochloric acid. Dilute the solution to 1 litre in a graduated flask.

A-1.1.4 Ammonium Chloride-Ammonium Hydroxide Bqfer Solution - .&solve 67.5 g of ammonium chloride in a mixture of 570 ml of ammonium hydroxide ( sp gr 0.92 ) and 250 ml of water. Also dissolve separately a mixture of 0.931 g of disodium ethylenediamine tetra-acetate dihydrate and 0.616 g of magnesium sulphate ( MgS04.7HzO ) in about 50 ml of water. Mix the two solutions and dilute to 1 litre.

A-1.1.5 Eriochrome Black T Indicator Solution - Dissolve O* 1 g in 20 ml of rectified spirit. The solution shall be used for not more than a week,

A-1.1.6 Standard Disodium Ethylenediamine Tetra- Acetate ( ED TA ) Solution - Weigh 3.72 g of disodium ethylenediamine tetra-acetate dihydrate in water and dilute in graduated flask to 1 litre. The solution shall be standardized frequently against standard calcium solution following the procedure given in A-1.2.2.

A-1.2 Procedure

A-1.2.1 Grind quickly about 5 g of the material, accurately weighed, with about 50 ml of amyl alcohol in a pestle and mortar and transfer the contents to a conical Bask. Wash the pestle and mortar with a few millimetres of amyl alcohol and add the washings to the flask. Shake the contents of the flask manually or in a mechanical shaker for about half-an-hour and then filter. Transfer the filtrate to a separating funnel and extract the calcium nitrate completely with water in five to six instalments. A few drops of dilute hydrochloric acid may be added during the extraction with water to avoid the formation of an emulsion of amyl alcohol with water. Concentrate the water extract at a low temperature to nearly half its volume.

A-1.2.2 Transfer the concentrated solution ( see A-1.2.1 ) to a conical flask, add 5 ml of ammonium chloride-ammonium hydroxide buffer solution, 5 drops oferiochrome black T indicator solution and titrate .against standard EDTA solution to a pure blue end point.

A-l.3 Calculation

where

Jv == normality of standard EDTA solution,

v = volume in ml of standard EDTA solution used in the titration, and

M maEs in .y of the material taken for the test.
