Building Lime and Lime Products Sectional Committee, CED 4

FOREWORDndard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalizedLimes and Lime Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the CivilEngineering Division Council.

    This Indian Staby the Building

This standard was first published in 1965 and subsequen!Iy revised in 1978. During its firstrevision, the provisions given in IS 5498 : 1969 GSpecification for lime cement-cinder hollowconcrete blocks were incorporated in this standard and IS 5498 was withdrawn. Most of theIndian Standards referred to in the first revision of this standard had undergone revision and, therefore, in this revision all the references had been updated in addition to modifying someother requirements like tolerances on dimensions, sampling and criteria for conformity, etc. Aclause on manufacturers certificate has also been incorporated in this revision.Lime based blocks are made from lime, lime and 33 grade ordinary Portland cement or slagcement or Portland Pozzolana cement, lime and pozzolana, and lime pczzolana mixture. The blocksare manufactured by various processes developed by Central Building Research Institute; Khadiand Village Industrres Commission; Central Road Research Institute; and other agencies. Theseblocks arc economical because it ensures rapid construction helps in saving of mortar, and doesnot require plastering. However, it can be given an attractive appearance, if needed, due towide variety of finishes both for interior and exterior walls. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall berounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values ( r evi sed ).The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that ofthe specified value in this standard.

    LIME BASED(1 SCOPE

Indian StandardBLOCKS - SPECIFICATIONSecond Revision )

This standard covers dimension, quality andstrength requirement of lime based blocks ( bothholiow and solid ) used for walls: internalpartitions and filler walls.2 REFERENCESThe Indian Standards listed in Annex A arenecessary adjuncts to this standard.3 TERMINOLOGYFor the purpose t)f this standard, the followingdefinitions shall apply.3.1 BlockA masonry unit, either solid or hollow, anyone of the external dimensions of which isgreater than the corresponding dimension of abrick as specified in IS 3952 : 1988, and of suchsize and mass as to permit it to be handled byone man. Furthermore, to avoid confusionwith slabs and panels, the height of the blockshall not exceed either its Iength or six timesits width.3.2 Solid BlockA block which is hundred percent solid.3.3 Hollow BlockA block in which hollow area is greater than25 percent but not greater than 50 percent ofthe gross cross-sectional area.3.4 Gross AreaThe total area occupied by a block on its bedd-ing face, including areas of the hollowportions and end recesses.3.5 Block DensityThe density calculated by dividing the mass ofa block by the overall volume, including holesor cavities and end recesses.3.6 Drying ShrinkageThe difference between the length of a specimenwhich has been immersed in water and thensubsequently dried to constant length, all under

specified conditions, expressed as a percentageof the dry length of the specimen.3.7 Moisture MovementThe difference between the length of the speci-men when dried to constant length and thelength when subsequently immersed in water, all under specified condition, expressed as apercentage of the dry length of the specimen.4 GENERAL REQUIREMENTSAll blocks shall be sound, free from cracks, broken edges, distortion and other defects thatwould interfere with the proper placing of theunit. The bedding surface shall be at right angles tothe face of blocks. The ends of the blockswhich form the vertical joints may be plain, tongued and grooved or double grooved asshown in Fig. 1.5 MATERIALS5.1 LimeLime shall conform to IS 712 : 1984.5.2 CementThe cement shall conform to IS 269 : 1989 orIS 455 : 1989 or IS 1489 (Parts 1 and 2 ) : 1991.5.3 Calcined Clay PozzolanaThis shall conform to IS 1344 : 1981.5.4 Lime Pozzolana MixtureThe mixture shall conform to IS 4098 : 1983.5.5 Fly AshThis shall conform to IS 3812 : 1981.5.6 Coarse AggregateThe coarse aggregate to be used in the manu-facture of blocks shall be either natural stoneaggregate conforming to IS 383 : 1970 or brokenbrick ( burnt clay ) aggregate conforming toIS 3068 : 1986 or cinder aggregate conformingto IS 2686 : 1977 depending on the situation ofuse. Any other suitable aggregate of provenquality and performance may also be used forthe purpose.
