SPECIFICATION FOR WING SCREWS

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution oti 1 September 1966, after the draft finalized by the Screw Threads and Fasteners Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

0.2 Wing screws are extensive1 y used in light assemblies where convenience of hand tightening is required. They are particularly suited to applica- tions where frequent adjustment or replacement of screws is required. The subject of wing nuts has already been covered in IS : 2636-1964*.

0.3 This standard deals with dimensions and materials for wing screws only while reference has been made to IS : 1367-19611_ which gives details of general requirement for more common types of threaded fasteners.

0.4 In the preparation of this standard, assistance has’ been derived from DIN 316-1956 ‘ Flugelschrauben M2 bis M24 ( Wing screws, M2 to M24 ) ’ issued by the Deutscher Normenausschuss.

0;~ For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express- ing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960$. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

I.1 This standard specifies the requirements for wing screws for sizes M2 to M24.

2. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

2.1 If made of steel, the wing screws conforming to this standard, shall have mechanical properties corresponding to symbol 4D of IS : 1367-19617.

*Specification for wing nuts.

tTechnica1 supply conditions for threaded fasteners.

$Rules for rounding off numerical values ( r&red).

Ist3727-1966

2.2 If made of brass, bronze or aluminium, the wing screws shall have a minimum tensile strength of 30 kgf/mm%.

3. GRADE

3.1 The wing screws covered in this standard shall conform to Black ‘B? Grade specified in IS : 1367-1961*.

4. DESIGNATION

4.1 The wing screws covered in this standard shall be designated as follows.

4.1.1 A wing screw of nominal size, M6 length 10 mm of black grade and of steel having mechanical properties corresponding to symbol 4D, shall be designated as

Wing Screw M6 x 10 IS : 3727 -B-4-D

4.1.2 When wing screws are made of brass, aluminium, etc, the symbol 4D shall be replaced by the words ‘ brass ‘, ‘ aluminium ’ etc, as appropriate.

5. DIMENSIONS

5.1 The screw threads dimensions of the wing screws shall have coarse pitches with the normal class of tolerance specified in IS : 1362-1962t.

5.2 The other dimensions of the wing screws shall be as given in Table: 1.

5.3 The length-diameter combination of wing screws shall be as given in Table ‘2.

6. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

6.1 The wing‘screws conforming to this standard, shall comply with the requirements of IS : 1367-1961*, SO far as manufacture, workmanship, tolerances, marking, packing and tests are concerned.

*Technical supply conditions for threaded fasteners. tDimensions for screw threads for general purposes (diameter range 1.6 to 39 mm )

Tr- INDIAN STANDARDS INSTITUTION The Indian Standards Institution (ISI), which started functioning

in 1947, is the national standards organization for India. Its principal object is to prepare standards on national and inter- national basis and promote their general adoption.

The overall control of ISI. which is run and financed jointly as a non-profit making body by the Government and private enterprise, is exercised by the General Council, composed of representatives of Central and State Governments: leading trade, scientific and technological organizations: and subscribing members. The Union Minister of Industry is the ex-officio President of ISI.

The present technical activity of ISI is carried out through 8 Division Councils for Agricultural and Food Products; Chemical; Civil Engineering; Consumer Products: Electrotechnical; Mechanical Engineering: Structural and Metals: and Textile. All technical work relating to the formulation and revision of standards is done by committees appointed by and under the direction’ of their respective Division Councils. These committees consist of experts drawn from manufacturing units, technical institutions, purchase organizations and pther concerned bodies.

To make available benefits of Indian Standards to the common man, ISI has introduced its Certification Marks Scheme under the Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act, 1952, as amended by the Amendment Act, 1961. According to this Act, quality goods conforming to Indian Standards can carry the ISI Certification Mark. This Mark is a -third-party guarantee of quality of marked goods. Licences to use the ISI Certification Mark are granted to manufacturers using reliable methods of quality control subject to qverall inspection by ISI.

In the international field, ISI represents India on the Inter- national Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Inter- national Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). IS0 and . IEC respectively link 54 and 4c) countries, and function through I I8 and 58 technical committees: ISI participates in 83 technical committees of IS0 and all the technical committees of IEC. The committees and subcommittees of IEC and IS0 for which ISI holds the secretariat deal with: Electric Fans, Lac, Mica, Pictorial Markings for Handling of Goods, Liquid Flow Measurements in Open Channels, Procedures fsr Inter-conversion of Values, Spices and Condiments, and Stimulants.
