NATIONAL FOREWORD
This Indian Standard ( Part 2 ) ( Third Revision ) which is identical with ISO 6194-2:1991 ‘Rotarshaft lip type seals — Part 2: Vocabulary’ issued by the International Organization for Standardization( ISO ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of the Gaskets anPacking Sectional Committee and approval of the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.
The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoudeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attentiois particularly drawn to the following:
a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they shouldread as ‘Indian Standard’.
b) Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practicis to use a point ( . ) as the decimal marker.
In this adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which Indian Standardalso exist. The corresponding Indian Standards which are to be substituted in their places are listebelow along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated:

ROTARY SHAFT LIP TYPE SEALSPART 2 VOCABULARY
( Third Revision)
1 Scope
This part of ISO 6194 defines technical terms and
nomenclature, in English and French, usad in relation to rotary
shaft lip seals, and gives the equivalent terms in Russian,German, Swedish, Japanese and Italian.
The terms apply to the types, the various parts of sealingdevices, the tolerances and fits, the storage, handling and fit-
ting, the visual variation and failure of seals, and the general
performance test procedure of rotary shaft lip type seals.
NOTE – In addition to terms and definitions used in two of the three
official ISO languages (English and French), this part of ISO 6194 gives
the equivalent terms in the Russian, German, Swedish, Japanese and
Italian languages; these are published under the responsibility of the
member bodies for the Soviet Union (GOST), Germany (DIN), Sweden
(S1S), Japan (J ISC), and Italy (UNI). However, only the terms given inthe official languages (English, French and Russian) can be considered
as ISO terms.
2 Normative references
The following standards con;ainreference in this text, constitute
provisions which, through
provisions of this part ofISO 6194. At the time of publication, the editions indicated
were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to
agreements based on this part of ISO 6194 are encouraged toinvestigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions
of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and ISOmaintain registers of currently valid International Standards.
