Many seniors do not have any formal job experience. Therefore, in this section include any type of volunteer or paid jobs you have done. Later, you will eliminate volunteer jobs from this section and place them under a new heading - “Other types of work experience”

Everything the individual is good at, especially those that are related to the job you are applying for.

Sports Arts Languages Writing Computer programs, technology. Leadership skills, etc.

Be brief and to the point. For most seniors, 1 – 1½ pages are sufficient.

Proofread very carefully for spelling and grammar. Have a second person proofread. (Errors may be interpreted as carelessness.)

If you include references, speak to the persons first. Otherwise, write “References are available on request.”

Maintain a serious, professional tone. Avoid silliness or jokes.

The cover letter is used to introduce yourself and to try to make an employer interested.

It has an introduction, that is supposed to grab or “hook” the attention of the reader.

It needs to state the purpose and motivation of the applicant for the job.

It also exposes specific characteristics that the applicant wants to present.

Include a heading centered at the top of the letter. (It can be the same as the contact information on the resume.)

Inside address of the possible employer or the newspaper that published the ad.

Salutation with a colon at the end.Example: Dear Mrs. Torres:

First paragraph:Introduce yourself and how you found out about the job.

Second paragraph:State your qualifications and refer the reader to your resume.

Third paragraph:Express your willingness to come for an interview

Closing: Example: Sincerely yours, Cordially, Type your name and sign above it.
