IS THERE TO BE A GRAND MATCH? It would seem that the RCCC are beginning to get their act together and are preparing for a possible Grand Match given the latest cold spell with the weather. Secretaries of curling clubs received a letter this week informing mem-bers that a possible Grand Match could take place at either Loch Leven or Piper Dam—we need to keep looking at the RCCC’s website for up-dated information. Club Secretaries have been issued with Guides both for players and spectators together with the necessary equipment required—so as one well-known saying states, “Be Prepared”. SHAREHOLDERS BONSPIELS

Congratulations to Gordon Gilchrist (skip), Helen Millar and Anne Hood for winning the Share-holders Opening Bonspiel. Gordon was also the winning skip at the Shareholders Christmas Bonspiel so if there is a known successful ingredient to win a Bonspiel then Gordon is your man (and skip)! Thanks must go to the Shareholders Organising Committee for arranging these enjoyable events which are always rounded off with a nice meal and good stories.

Congratulations to Tom Copstick (skip), Willie Barrie, Eileen Gibson and Elva Allan for winning the Closing Shareholders Bonspiel at the end of last season.

After a well fought season in the Boyd Trophy over the season the final four met on the ice to decide the final four placings. The winners and runners up was to be decided between Hamilton/Thornyhill 2 and Avondale Heather 1 and the third and fourth positions were between Lesmahagow Ladies and Wishaw. Both games were evenly matched until about the half-way stage when both Hamilton/Thornyhill in their game and Lesmahagow Ladies in theirs took a big end. At that time it looked game over for the losing rinks but as curling often show the game is not over until the ‘fat lady throws the last stone.’ As the games progressed Avondale and Wishaw battled back taking ends against the head but alas time ran out for both sides and the result stood as it was after the big ends were won. The winners were Arthur Devine, Tom Gibson, John Harcourt, Eddie Ireland Runners-up were Archie Kerr, Bill Allan, Jean Allan, Guy Campbell Third were Ann Howie, Elma Frame, Rebecca Gardiner, Margaret Levack Fourth were Scott Lumsden, John Anderson, Bob Parry, Bill Robinson. A few of the players in the final had been on the Trophy several times but this year was to prove that the Hamilton/Thornyhill 2 rink were virgins in winning the Trophy which goes to show that every rink that enters this competition can get their hands on the silver no matter how daunting the opposition may appear. In the unfortunate enforced absence of the Richardson family the presentations were made by Gordon Gilchrist (President – Ice and Sports Club) and appreciation was expressly stated for the continued support of the Richardson family for this keenly supported and popular competi-tion.

Friday 12th March saw the culmination of the arrangements that both Presidents Gillian Haggart (Lanarkshire Ice Rink Club) and Gordon Gilchrist (Hamilton Ice and Sports Club) to host the 2010 President’s Plate. Gillian and Gordon decided to vary the invitation format slightly from past years. With regards to the invitations it was noted that general invites given out to our nearest located ice rinks in recent years were not being responded too, resulting in an immediate shortfall of players for the day. To resolve this and having invited all curlers who have contributed to the good of the ice rink such as coaches and committee members, Gillian and Gordon decided to personally invite other curlers from Hamil-ton and further a-field who they personally wanted to play in the President’s Plate. As a result there were friends on the day representing Dumfries, Lockerbie, Kinross, Kirkcaldy and Ayr ice rinks as well as our own rink Another change was in competition format. It was decided to split the competition into two sections of six rinks. Playing in system 2, 2, 1, 1, 2 ends it meant that within each section all opposition rinks would be played against within the allocated time. At the conclusion there would be a winning rink from each section each receiving a prize. To claim the President’s Plate it was again decided to do something different and it was agreed that one player from each of the winning rinks would draw the shot with the stainless steel stones currently being stored at Hamilton. The slight changes appear to have been well received by the participants on the day and the competi-tion went well. The winning rink in section A was that of Willie Frame, Andy Williamson, Gillian Hag-gart, Sarah Lean. The winner of section B was David Haggart, Tommy Campbell, Mark Meehan (Ayr), Sandy Welsh. On learning that David’s rink had won their section and that David was going to draw the shot Willie nominated Gillian to throw for his rink. With neither player ever having thrown a stainless steel stone and even with sweepers assisting both failed to reach the hog line with their practice stone. On the scoring stone Gillian without sweepers adjusted brilliantly and got within the four foot. David stepped onto the hack with considerable pres-sure to beat his wife’s stone and this time, again without the need of his sweepers he adjusted per-fectly and lay on the button to claim the Plate. Gillian and Gordon have both had excellent feedback from some of those participating and would like on behalf of them and themselves to thank the Ice Rink for their assistance in hosting the event, the restaurant for the excellent meal and Ian Buchan for his assistance with the competition format and individual rink sheets.

The Royal Club/Salsc National Funspiel Competition. The West of Scotland Qualifiers for The Under 13’s and Under 15’s in the above competition were held at Braehead Curling Rink on Saturday the 6th November. The aim of the funspiel is to introduce young curlers to playing against other young curlers but in a fun and friendly competition. The winners then get the chance to go forward and play in the national RCCC/SALSC finals being held at Aberdeen on Saturday 5th March 2011. Six curling rinks from the West of Scotland were able to send teams in each of the two age groups so it was decided to run a “Round Robin” competition so that every team got a chance to play every other team. Each game was 3 ends so it meant a long day for all the youngsters and the parents/coaches who came along to support them. After the main competition all the teams then played in a “Hotshots” challenge where each member of the team had to play a “Draw” shot and then a “strike” shot with points being awarded. One extra stone was then played in each disci-pline for double points. Medals and chocolates (Donated by Breahead young Curl-ers) were given to the winners of the Hotshots. In the main competition, Hamilton emerged the winners in The Under 13’s with five wins out of five and a total of 10 points. Greenacres under 13’s came in 2nd place with 7 points. Hamilton were once again victorious in the under 15’s with another unbeaten run of five wins and 10 points and Braehead were in 2nd place with 5 points. The winners and runners up in each age group were awarded with medals and a complimentary gift token from Braehead Curling. However the emphasis was on fun and getting the chance to meet and play against other young curlers. Certificates were given to every child who took part and Special mention must be made of Cameron Purves from Waterfront C.C. in Greenock who at the age of “nine” was the youngest player taking part. He was actually born on the 1st of January 2001. David Horne the CDO at Braehead and organiser of the competition was full of praise for everyone who helped make the day such a success but made a specially mention of the parents and coaches who give up so much of their time to support the youngsters.
