Size: 17 linear ft. (34 boxes) Collection #: AR 795 – 112 Historical Note Isaac Jacobus Van Ness was born in East Orange, New Jersey, July 15, 1860. He was converted to Christianity in 1877 with the guidance of Samuel Colgate, who was the president of Colgate & Co. As a young man, Van Ness worked for J. P. Morgan Co., in New York City, as a bookkeeper before leaving to attend Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He graduated in 1890, was ordained in First Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee, and began his first pastorate at Immanuel Baptist Church in Nashville. He remained at Immanuel until 1896, when he moved to Georgia to become co-editor of Christian Index, the Baptist state paper of Georgia. In 1897, Van Ness received his D.D. from Mercer University. Van Ness’s career with the Sunday School Board began in 1900 when he was appointed Editorial Secretary. He remained in that position until 1917, when he became Executive Secretary and Treasurer of the Sunday School Board. During his years at the Board, Van Ness also served as President of the Sunday School Editor’s Association of the U.S. and Canada, as well as chairman of the editorial section of the Sunday School Council of Evangelical Denominations. Van Ness was also a member of the International Sunday School lesson committee, president of the Sunday School Council of Evangelical Denominations, and a member of World’s Sunday School Executive Committee. In 1920, he received his LL.D. from Baylor University, and, for many years, he was a trustee of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as well as the Baptist Bible Institute. Van Ness published two works, Training in Church Membership and Training in the Baptist Spirit.

The Sunday School Board experienced much growth while Van Ness was executive secretary. Under his administration, the Baptist Book store was inaugurated and the Ridgecrest Assembly was improved. The Baptist Young People’s Union and Vacation Bible School became major program ministries of the Board. The Baptist Student Union and other student work were created, campaigns were implemented to help rural churches, the Board assumed responsibility for collecting and reporting statistics on Southern Baptists, and Home and Foreign Fields began to be published. I. J. Van Ness married Frances V. Tabb June 24, 1891, and the couple had five children – Stephen Austin, Allan Edward, Noble, Lucy Thompson, and Edwin Bell. Van Ness retired from the Sunday School Board in 1935 and remained in Nashville until his death February 13, 1947. Scope and Content Note The I. J. Van Ness Papers consists of 17 linear feet of material, located in 34 boxes. The collection contains material dating from 1903 – 1944 and documents I. J. Van Ness’s career at the Baptist Sunday School Board, including his time as editorial secretary and executive secretary and treasurer. The collection includes a large portion of Van Ness’s correspondence, as well as some photographs, reports, pamphlets, and other papers. The breadth of Van Ness’s influence in the Southern Baptist Convention is reflected in the individuals with whom he corresponded, many of whom were leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention. Included in his correspondence files are J. B. Lawrence, Kathleen Mallory, Victor Masters, E. C. Routh, John R. Sampey, William L. Poteat, J. W. O’Hara, L. L. Gwaltney, B. W. Spilman, George W.
