EUGENE CHO: OVERRATED
We all love justice and compassion. But is it possible we are more in love with the idea of compassion and justice than we are with actually putting it into practice? Is it possible that we all love compassion and justice … until there’s a personal cost to living compassionately, loving mercy, and seeking justice? It’s not just about us doing justice; this journey is also about allowing the work of justice to change us. In other words, we not only seek justice as we follow Jesus, but we seek to live justly. Our calling is not simply to change the world, but perhaps as important, our calling is to be changed ourselves.
EUGENE CHO: OVERRATED
It’s a call for deeper discipleship. I fear that we have an unrealistic perception of what it means to follow Christ and what it means to pursue justice. In truth, we have not taken the time to count the cost of following Jesus. I fear that we might be tempted to compartmentalize the action of changing the world rather than seeing it as a key part of our discipleship journey that will impact the whole of our lives. I fear that we’re asking God to move mountains forgetting that God also wants to move us. And in fact, it may be possible that we are the mountains that need to be moved!

4. Social norms on gender relations, women are considered to be of lower status relative to men.

o When girl in the developing world receives 7 or more years of education, she marries later, has less children
o Educated girls grow into educated women they have healthier babies and are more likely to educate their children
o When girls and women earn income they will reinvest 90% of it into their family, compared to 30% to 40% for a boy/man.

• She stays longer in school ----better educated
• Reduces child marriage & teen pregnancy
• lowers infant & child mortality rates
• Lowers maternal mortality rates
• girls are protected against HIV/AIDS infection
• Increases the number of women with jobs and higher earning potential
• it breaks the inter-generational cycle of poverty--benefits that last many generations
