In our companion diocese of Lui, we pray for the clergy and people of the Diocese of Lui, and Vasco, their treasurer

Standing Room Only at Saturday'sconfirmations at the cathedralJust under one hundred were

confirmed, received, andreaffirmed in their Baptismal

Vows this past Sunday at the

cathedral by the Rt. Rev. Wayne

    Smith. Extra chairs were pulled

    in from Bofinger Chapel and

some folks found seating in the

choir area of the loft; the place

was packed and the Spirit was

    palpable.

    Bishop Wayne's message included

themes of shared work in finding God's

mission in the world. "If it is going to

happen at all, it is going to happen incommunity."

And then the presentations began. There is

an overly large set of 260 photos on the

diocesan flickr account that will mostly be

of interest to the confirmands and their

    families and friends.

After the presentations and celebration of Holy Eucharist, each parish posed

for the traditional picture with Bishop Wayne.

There many ways to read theBible. One is to engage inBible Study and another is to"pray the scriptures."

When we do Bible Study weuse our head to understandhow the scriptures came to be

written and what the wordsmean for us today.

The ancient practice of"praying the scriptures" isreading God's word more withour heart than our head.Called "lecti o divina," literally"holy reading," it begins withcultivating the ability to listendeeply, to hear "with the earof our hearts" the words ofHoly Scripture.

All Saints' Wo men 's Wellness and Fellowshipday a success

    Around fifty women attended

    last Saturday's wellness

    extravaganza at All Saints'

    Church in St. Louis. Attendees

    were greeted with take-away

    bags and tables filled with

    health tips, recipes, and

inspiring articles to take home. The Rev. Karen Anderson,

pastor at Olive Chapel AME in

    Kirkwood, opened the day

    speaking on spiritual wellness,

specifically the importance of a daily prayer practice. "Sometimes we are

just so busy, we fail to hear God's call. Did you take time this morning to

talk to God, to say thank you, to say hello. Prayer is God's desire to talk

with you in dialogue, not monologue," said Anderson. "And, more

importantly, do we keep still long enough to hear God's response?"

Rounding out the day was a presentation on physical wellness, a delicious

lunch, and light exercise. The mens group at All Saints is planning a

similar workshop June 26th, the Saturday after Fathers Day.

The Episcopal School for Ministry online book club is reading Nora

Gallagher's The Sacred Mealthis month (online discussion May 31). There

is a lovely interview online at ExploreFaith.

explorefaith: If you were to ask most people to describe

Communion, they would likely focus on the bread and wine.

Your discussion involves the waiting, the receiving and

afterward. Can you explain why those three are all integral

    parts of the communion experience?

Nora Gallagher: Everyone has different ways of approaching

Communion, but I have found that there are those three parts

for me. During the waiting, I seem to be living in my head

with all the anxiety, regret, guilt and distraction that resides

there. Its like the baggage you carry when traveling. I carry all

of that with me toward the altar. Once at the altar, I am asked,

I think, to just open my hands. That s it. Receive. Its

dangerous to open your hands. You dont know what will end

up in them. This had to be one of the smartest things Jesus

ever did. He must have thought, How can I make them step

into the unknown? How can I get them to let in a little

surprise? I know what Ill do: Ill figure out a way for them to

put their hands out in front of them, empty.

Copyright Law and the Church: Traps and Tips. Partially as a result of

the ongoing conversations between Episcopal Communicators, the

Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes is offering a webinar onThursday, June 10, 2010, at 3 pm CT, with David Posteraro, Intellectual

Property Partner at Kohrman, Jackson & Krantz PLL and Junior Warden of

    Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio.

The law of copyright governs what can be said in the pulpit,

sung in the choir, printed in the bulletin or published on the

church website. It extends to social networking sites,

podcasts of sermons and videos of services posted on

YouTube. Ignorance of copyright law is a trap for the unwary.

This webinar will address issues such as audio and videotape

recordings of religious services, who owns the sermon, what

pictures can be posted on your website, and insuring against

    infringement risk.

We'll be tuning in at the diocesan communications office, and note that

several can listen in to the same presentation. You're welcome to join us; if

you think you might, please send a note by Wednesday, June 9, to

    [email protected]. More information online.

Congratulations to Rita Rundquist and JoAn MacBryde who are retiring

as co-directors of the Emmanuel Nursery School after a combined 60+

years of educating children, including hundreds of young Emmanuelites.

Two celebrations are planned: Sunday, May 23, and Wednesday, May 26.
