MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTThis year 2012 ISF celebrates its 40th anniversary. It may seem a long period but it is just the beginning!

Since we reported on 35 years of ISF history, 5 years ago, a lot has changed. End 2008 ISF set up an autonomous secretariat in the House of Sports in Antwerp, Belgium. Since the General Assembly in 2010, ISF engaged its Secretary General to work full time autonomously from a member federation. Recently ISF drew up a strategic plan and action plans which cover market-ing & communication, sporting and educational topics. A new modern website will be launched soon.

Not only the number of sports on the programme increased and consequent-ly the number of participants but also the scope of ISF activities widened. ISF stresses now, more than in the past, education through sport and the leg-acy of its organisations, education to citizenship by involving more young-sters in the organisation of the events, solidarity programmes, the inclusion of disabled students and the cooperation with international sport federations and international organisations having similar aims.

In 10 years from now we should have raised the number of affiliated coun-tries on all continents to the European number and focus also on continental activities.

In 10 years from now we should have consolidated our place on the inter-national sport scene and be even more than today an esteemed partner in international youth sport and education.

Looking forward to the future of the ISF, we should not only show a profound respect for its history and for the work of all those, volunteers and officers, who brought it to life and caused it to flourish but we should also be proud and most grateful to be part of it!

Happy anniversary!

Andrea Delpin

THE GENESIS OF ISF

13

Around the mid 1960s, international sporting contests between schools were on the increase. Besides occasional and haphazard meetings between two or more schools, tournaments were beginning to be organised regularly in different disciplines: in handball from 1963, in volleyball from 1969, in football one year later and from 1971 also in basketball. Each of these annual tournaments produced basic regulations and a standing committee.

The large number of international competitions requiring eliminating heats at the national level soon gave rise to a desire to co-ordinate these events, within a specific International Federation. To help promote this idea, the Federal Minister of Education and Arts of the Republic of Austria convened a Conference at Vienna/Raach in the Autumn of 1971. Here the conditions were discussed for setting up a European School Sport Federation.

After very lengthy debates, the project was approved. However, bearing future development possibilities in mind, the Federation was not limited to European countries alone. A Provisional Committee, the members of which were chosen from among the 22 nations present, was set up, and the meeting of the constituent General Assembly was fixed for 4 June 1972 at Beaufort/Luxembourg. This meeting adopted the Statutes and proceeded to elect the members of the first Executive Committee.

THE ISF LOGO

15

The logo of the ISF is presented in a figurative and symbolic context. Its oval line, which skirts the logo, symbolizes the movement in and the attraction by the ISF. The two figurines represent a boy and a girl who enroll in the movement.

The 5 small squares (black – red – green – yellow – blue) represent all inhabitants of the world. The sixth little square (white) represents the opening and the broadmindedness of the ISF. We could say that it is an empty chair for an unexpected guest at the table during a meal. Whatever the color of skin, wherever the place where someone is living, whatever the difference in religion and in customs, the youth brings a multiple wealth through its differences and its diversity.

Violet is the color of temperance, composed on an equal proportion of red and blue. Violet symbolizes the balance between the sense and the spirit, the passion and the intelligence, love and wisdom, lucidity and considered action.

The trophy, presented by ISF, honours the memory of one of its colleagues who died, suddenly in 2001 while in office. It aims to enhance the philosophy and the values espoused by supporters of school sport throughout the world.

This trophy allows ISF today to recognise in a member country the remarkable and exemplary nature of its commitment to the cause of school sport.

This trophy allows ISF actively to pursue its strategic directions and at the same time to support the efforts being made in affiliated countries. It should constitute a form of recognition and encouragement.

The trophy should honour the official school sport organisation in a country affiliated to ISF which has distinguished itself by:- an exceptional contribution to ISF,- sustained national support from its national government,- being a well-established organisation which emphasises values, ethos, openness

and welcome, supporting the recognition of school sport as a health factor, an issue of responsibility and a means of education in joint youth/adult action,

- any international initiatives.

Until now the Trophy has been awarded to:
