DEAR ISLAND LAKERS,Happy New Year! Now that 2013 is here, let's reminisce about what made your 2012 summer so special. Was it all of your exciting, extraordinary, spectacular activities? Was it performing on stage? Bonding with your bunk during evening activities? Was it everybody’s favorite saying, “Everybody up, up, up! Rise and shine, it’s a beautiful day in Starrucca, PA,…”? Or was summer 2012 special because of all of the people and the everlasting friendships you made? We want to thank you all for making Island Lake Camp such a special place to spend our summers.
We now look forward to what Summer 2013 will bring... more good times, great friends, thrilling experiences, and tons of fun. We want to welcome all of our new members of the Island Lake Family, campers and staff alike. We're sure that you'll love the time you spend at camp as much as we do! Next year at this time you, too, will have the opportunity to reminisce over your incredible first time camp experience with us.
As always, we have lots of important information in this month’s newsletter for both parents and campers. So kids, make sure that your parents read this newsletter carefully. Parents, make sure your kids read the newsletter carefully. If need be, bring your newsletter in the car with your folks to read out loud to them or place it on the dinner table as a topic of conversation. We just want to make sure that all of our campers and parents read their “Island Laker” from cover to cover.
If you are a previous staff member interested in returning to camp but you have not yet contacted our winter office, please be sure to do so, even if you cannot yet make a definite commitment. We just need to know that you’re at least considering returning so we can keep that in mind while interviewing prospective counselors. Please don’t wait any longer and risk getting closed out. We love having a large returning staff and we’re excited that so many of you have already committed your upcoming summer to us. But you know who’s even more excited to see you than us? YOUR CAMPERS!!! We’re kicking off our staff recruitment later this month, so if you’ve got camp on the brain, please email [email protected] so we don’t give your spot away. Later in this newsletter you'll find our travel schedule for the season.

CONSTRUCTIONUPDATE:
Construction is nearly complete on our brand new boathouse. The new building is located just up the hill from where the old boathouse once stood and we hope to have a picture for you in an upcoming newsletter once construction has finished.
HELPWANTED:
We are currently looking for nurses to work at camp during our 3rd session this summer. The session runs from July 30 through August 12.
If any of our camp parents are nurses or have friends who are and are interested in spending part of their summer at camp with us, please contact Trip at [email protected].
FOODDRIVE:
We are pleased to announce that our first annual winter reunion food drive was a great success! The generosity of our Island Lake families enabled us to donate 257 pounds of food to Food Bank for Westchester.

Cloz Company will once again handle our clothing outfitting this summer. Remember that there are NO required uniforms at Island Lake. Anything that you wish to order is completely optional and each camper will receive an Island Lake t-shirt upon arrival at camp.
Cloz has already begun accepting orders for summer 2013. You can place an order by calling 1-800-876-2267 or by visiting their website at Cloz.com. Keep in mind that all orders are placed directly through Cloz Company, not through Island Lake.
Starting next month, the Cloz Company will be displaying merchandise at various locations throughout the country for "trying on" purposes. The dates and locations have not yet been finalized, but when they are they will be posted at Cloz.com and we will have them for you in next month’s newsletter.
Please remember, orders are custom made and they take time to produce. Ordering early will provide you with the opportunity to make any exchanges before the summer begins.

ATTENTION STAFF MEMBERS:We have been very busy here in the winter office getting our staffing needs ready for the upcoming summer. A lot of returning staff in a variety of departments have already committed to coming back. We've also hired some great new people and we’re about to begin traveling around the globe to hire more outstanding counselors. We also hope to catch up with former staff members during our travels. Below you will find our travel itinerary for 2013.
Staff members should note when we'll be in your area so you can come visit us. Even better, call us in advance to make plans to get together while we're in your neck of the woods. We usually spend the night before each camp fair in the host town, so it's better if you call us in advance to make plans. Did somebody say, “free dinner”???

Hey teenagers, are you ready for another exciting 3rd session trip? That'’s right, this summer our adventure takes us to Cleveland, Ohio! There are only 3 requirements for you to join us on this 4 day/3 night trip:1. You must be entering 9th grade or up (CIT'’s included).2. You must be registered for session 3.3. You must be prepared to have tons of fun! Details and prices have not yet been finalized. Once they are, we will send out a mailing to all families with campers entering 9th grade and up. That mailing will include a trip enrollment form as well as a tentative itinerary. If you are not currently registered for the 3rd session but would like to go on the trip, please have your parents contact us to add the session. Remember, there'’s limited space on this teen trip so don'’t toss the mailing aside when you receive it. Again, this mailing will be sent as soon as the plans and prices are finalized.

Jenna Zucker and Killeen McCans got together in New York City in early December.
They had a great time shopping and ice skating in Rockefeller Center!
Hunter Goldman was recently featured in his hometown newspaper in an article highlighting his fantastic Bar Mitzvah project.
Hunter decided to raise scholarships for children of military families to attend camp, a cause he coined as “camperships.”He has set a
goal to raise $2,000 by the end of January so that four or five kids whose parents are serving in the military will be able to attend Island Lake at a discounted rate. If he exceeds his goal, he would donate the balance to Operation Purple, a program affiliated with the National Military Family Association, which also aims to send children of military families to summer camp.
Way to go, Hunter. We are all so proud of you!
