Dear Residents of Lowes Island Estates and Golf Community,

I would like to thank the following families for their support and contributions for helping make Island Living a success:

Marc and Michelle Guilbault for continually supporting the publication.

The Eckers for their amazing family story, cute Georgia Peaches article and the fun recipes.

The Schlemmers for sharing their inspiring story on their athletic kids.

Tigerlily Foundation, just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Alexander Antonov for sharing his unique military diecast collection.

Linda Kintz and Mark Meija for opening their doors to their beautiful home.

Richard Ashton for hosting our very first event, a Wine Tasting at Clas-sic Wines in Great Falls.

I would also like to thank all of our great sponsors for helping to bring this publication to our community.

And last but not least, Thomas Radley for his creative photography and dedication to making this publication a success.

I hope you have been enjoying these first few weeks of fall. October is such a lovely month in Northern Virginia with the spectacular colors all around us. As much as I don’t like to see the summer end, there’s something exciting about the crisp air,

campfires, crunchy red apples, football games and the excite-ment of Halloween in the air that makes this season so charm-ing. I would love to hear about the special things you are doing to celebrate this beautiful time of year. Whether it’s taking a hayride, picking apples at a local farm, cheering for Dominion High School football team, or trick or treating with your kiddies - we welcome all of your stories, pictures and other involvement.

I am having such a great time meeting so many wonderful peo-ple in Lowes Island, and it thrills me to hear how much you are enjoying reading the stories your neighbors are sharing. Please let me know if you have a flair for writing, or enjoy planning events. This is a fun way to get involved and use your talents with your neighborhood magazine. Before you know it, Christ-mas and the holidays will be upon us. I thought it would be fun to showcase this magical season in our December issue. If any of you would like to share pictures of your holiday traditions, whether Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa celebrations…in your home or parties you are attending. Please send your photos to us. We thank YOU for supporting our Sponsor Busi-nesses that are continuously dedicated to delivering the highest quality services to our residents.

I look forward to meeting each of you at our upcoming neighborhood events! Enjoy the beautiful autumn days and Happy Halloween!

DR. RANA BARAKAT

Name: Sara, Anna, Rachel, Natalie and Kyle SchlemmerAge: 11 to 17 years of ageSchool: Dominion High School and Seneca Ridge Middle SchoolSport/Activity: Swimming

The Schlemmer kids began to develop their of love of swim-ming when they each started swimming for our local summer swim team, the Cascades Rapids, at the age of 5.

While there are some awesome swimmers today like Katie Ledecky, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte who the kids love to follow, they find their highest motivation to become better swimmers through support from their teammates.

Sara and Anna swim on three teams; Dominion High School Swim Team, Cascades Rapids and Snow Swimming. Rachel, Kyle and Natalie swim on two teams; Rapids and Snow.

Currently, we practice at the Claude Moore Recreational Center, at the only Loudoun County indoor swimming pool. Both Dominion and Snow practice at Claude Moore. The Rapids practice during the summer at the StoneHouse pool in the Cascades.

Swimming is a “for life” sport. Each of the kids’ coaches, from the student coaches on the Rapids when they were five years old to the professional USA coaches on Snow, help them grow as athletes.

We have met Matt McLean, who is a Potomac Falls High School graduate and a former Rapid and Snow swimmer. Matt earned a Gold medal in the 2012 Olympics in the 4x200 relay.

The whole family hopefully will be cheering him on next sum-mer in the 2016 Olympic Games.

Most of the swim meets are local and take place at pools in Vir-ginia, Maryland and D.C. However, we occasionally travel to South Carolina, North Carolina, or Pennsylvania.

Swim meet races are called events. Events are of different strokes and different lengths of the pool. Sara loves all distance freestyle events and the 100 fly. Anna’s niche is the 50 and 100 breast. Rachel takes on the grueling events like the 200 butter-fly and the 400 Individual Medley. Natalie and Kyle are still too young to specialize, but both excel in the Breaststroke events. As a family, we have participated in the Lake Anna Open Water race for the last three years. The older kids and mom swam the 5K and the younger kids swam shorter distances.

We have been so fortunate to live in a county/community that is so supportive of children’s athletics. Swimming in no exception. All three teams that the kids are on are run by dedicated coaches and parent volunteers. This circle of sup-port allows swimmers to succeed. The Schlemmer kids have benefited from well-organized swim programs, and all five have received many various awards and honors. The oldest, Sara and Anna, are now coaching younger kids during the summer. Sara helps kids from 7 to 10 years old, while Anna loves to work with the youngest group of kids.

By participating in these sports we have learned dedication, hard work and time management. The oldest three kids leave the house every weekday before 5 AM to get to their two-hour practice before school. The twins practice for an hour and a half

four days a week. Plus, there are practices or meets for all five on the weekends. The summer team and high school team prac-tices and meets are in addition during their respective seasons.

It’s hard to pick just one thing that we love! But, all five kids agree that every meet is exciting. At one meet you might place in the top three, and at the next you might place in the bottom three. It can be mentally challenging to go through all the ups and downs. But when you step on the starting block, your training takes over and you don’t have to think, just race! Friendships run deep in this sport. You might work so hard to out touch your best friend, and whether you do or don’t you hug at the end, congratulating each other. Why? Because you both just pushed each other to achieve your best.

Our favorite moments are: Sara: completing the 11K practice set. Anna: races that she came from behind to win. Rachel: having to re-swim the 200 fly in a swim-off, and dropping four seconds to make a Zone cut time. Natalie: taking first place in the 50 Breaststroke at All-Stars. Kyle: when the relay competi-tion is seeded to win and your team beats them.

Our plans after graduating: Sara is the closest to high school graduation. She plans on studying engineering in college and swimming for a club team.

If we could give one tip to someone wanting to get into swim-ming…just get in the pool! Take lessons and start swimming for your local summer league team or check out a USA team at Claude Moore. You may love it!

Hey kids – do you want to be the superstar of the neighborhood? All you have to do is ask your parents to email [email protected] and answer some questions in order to be featured in the next available issue!

LAW OFFICE OF PATRICIA E. TICHENOR,

P.L.L.C.

Contact our office to discuss updating your existing estate plan to providenot only for your children, but for

your beloved pets as well. We provide estate planning services

for every member of your family.

Do you have a pet and would like to share his/her story? Then email [email protected] to have them featured in the next available issue! Dogs, cats, horses, fish and any other type of animals are welcome!

Where/why did you get your pet? We adopted our pet from Loudoun County Animal Shelter. Our oldest son Aidan con-vinced us. He had a writing project at school that required him to write a persuasive letter. His letter was on why our family should adopt a cat. He was very persuasive and it worked!

Is there a story behind its name? When we adopted Georgia from the shelter, her name was Peaches. We weren’t crazy about that name. Over dinner that evening, we brainstormed as a family on names that would be a good fit for her and we all loved the name Georgia. The children thought it went very well with Peaches!

Anything special or unusual about them (talents/quirks)? Geor-gia is a cat –dog. She is our first cat and she definitely has more “dog like” behavior. She rolls around and loves having her belly scratched. She can also play fetch and will return the ball/toy.

What do you like best about your pet? She is so loving and has been a great addition to our family. She is great with our children.

Any funny stories? If there is a cup of water left out on the fam-ily room floor or coffee table, she loves to drink from it.

How spoiled is your pet? Very spoiled! She even gets carried upstairs to bed each night.

What else should we know about your pet and/or how your pet has enriched your home/family? Georgia was a shelter cat and has been a wonderful addition to our family. The kids would much rather play with her than watch TV. The ladies at the Loudoun County Animal Shelter were wonderful in matching Georgia with our family! #adoptdontshop #cleartheshelters

Metro Medley Deejays owner Jeremy Scarborough has lived in Virginia since 2002. He was born and raised in Alabama, where he spent the majority of his time learning about popular music and also playing the French horn in his high school band. Jeremy comes from a family of five, with both of his parents still residing in Alabama.

Jeremy’s experience as a professional DJ has taken him to over 1,000 events where he has provided his services for some of the most sophisticated audiences in the country.

Jeremy began his career as a DJ in 2002, working as a club DJ in Washington, D.C. at venues such as Polly Esther’s, Coyote Ugly and over 20 other well-known establishments in and around the city. Friday and Saturday nights had Jeremy packing the dance floor for up to six hours at a time, which gave him the oppor-tunity to host over 300 events as a club DJ in less than three years. In 2003 and 2004, Jeremy hosted a weekly radio show on WEBR Public Access Radio. During this time, Jeremy learned essential DJ skills including microphone presentation, program-ming and content development.

Moving forward to 2010, Jeremy decided to go into business full time as a DJ and started the company Metro Medley Dee-jays. After 5 years as a sole proprietorship, Metro Medley Dee-jays became an LLC in May of 2015.

Metro Medley Deejays is a mobile entertainment service spe-cializing in DJ entertainment as well as live musicians. The company started in 2010 with the vision to provide high-quality music entertainment for clients throughout Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia. The company was started by owner Jer-emy Scarborough, and has since grown to a team of 5 DJ’s with a host of live musicians available.

Metro Medley Deejays takes the time to get to know you and what your specific entertainment needs are for your special event before we ask you to hire us. One of the rea-sons clients hire us and recommend us is because we meet with them in person instead of trying to push a sale over the phone. Plus, we listen!

Metro Medley Deejays takes the time to meet with you at your convenience, and is available to visit your event site in advance so that your event flows smoothly. We also custom-ize your music playlist to your specific preferences so that you and your guests will enjoy the entertainment that you have hired us to provide.

Our advice to the residents of Lowe’s Island Estates would be to always meet with your DJ or entertainment before you hire them. This gives you the opportunity to see who your entertain-ment is, and also allows for you to address important questions or concerns you may have when you are planning your event.

Also make sure to ask whether your DJ or entertainment pro-vider carries general liability insurance. This is extremely impor-tant if you are hiring them to provide service inside your home, or at the venue you have chosen to host your event. We are proud to say that we do carry general liability insurance.

We Sweatthe Details.

It all began with my dad, a model enthusiast. When I was a kid, he bought ready-built models and scale models from kits. He would put them into bookshelves so I could not reach and break them. Over the years he created a really nice collection of scale model cars and airplanes. They were of different scales in size and on display in his apartment in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the former Soviet Union.

I grew up in an academic family where both mom and dad were busy teaching and doing research. I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with my grandparents. Both of my grandfathers and one of my grandmothers were retired career officers from the time of WWII. So many of my toys as a child were bought from the army surplus stores, Voentorg. My toys consisted of toy soldiers, military vehicles and toy weapons. I remember for my fourth or fifth birthday receiving a large grey and blue semi-trailer dump truck that I immediately converted into a missile launcher.

When I graduated from high school, I had my own small col-lection. My fascination with both scale models and all things military grew from ancient times to modern days. One of my grandfathers worked for a design bureau, and had subscriptions

to many technical and military magazines. Those magazines were a goldmine of learning and I became fascinated in the evolution of technology and quantum leaps in engineering that were happening during these large wars.

The core of the collection were 1/43 scale models. It appears to not have any relation to the real life unlike, for example, 1/50, 1/48, or 1/25 scales that are widely used in commercial modeling. Why? Long story short, Lionel did it. Lionel started making electric toy trains that led to the manufacturing of high-end model-like trains. If you calculate the ratio of the width of the Lionel gauge to the actual British narrow gauge, you come up with 1/43.5 or roughly 1/43. The development of Lionel trails led to the development of car and truck models. That started the most popular scale in Europe – 1/43. In the modeling world, one successful manufacturer of toy trains gave birth to today’s world-wide hobby.

Some of the early models made in Great Britain were models of Soviet cars. Molds for these models introduced behind the Iron Curtain became common as the 1/43 scale. Following the initial release of these re-makes several originally designed models were introduced, including three models of Soviet GAZ trucks made during the WWII. The GAS factory was originally built by Ford in Nizhny Novgorod (later – Gorky, hence Gorky Avto Zavod – Gorky Auto Factory). That factory started with the assembly of original Ford parts and in the decade preceding WWII, Ford expended its operations globally. During the war, factories built by Ford were making vehicles and airplanes for western allies, as well as vehicles for the Soviet Union and the axis. One of the working horses in the Wehrmacht was the famous 3 ton Ford-V3000S and its all-wheel and half-track modifications.

As the Iron Curtain lifted in the 90s, I began to learn of the western model market. Back in the 1990s, there were two main European model companies; French Solido (and its boutique offspring Verem) that was making the 1/43 scale line, which consisted largely of classic Jeeps and trailers and military ver-sions of cars and vans, and CEF/Replex, that was following the tradition of multi-scale releases with a few basic models with various modifications. Today, you find their models on Ebay. Since there were very few models of military equipment made in Europe in 1/43 scale, I decided to concentrate my collection on only 1/43 scale models of military equipment. The exciting challenge began. At that time, my collection was a few hundred items and my dream was to find one model a month!

Fast forward twenty years, there are now purely military subscription series of WWII vehicles, tanks and special

operations vehicles series with a couple of issues released every month. Dozens of other manufacturers around the world offer models of military equipment from toy sol-diers to airplanes. My collection that is to my best knowl-edge, the largest in the world, contains thousands of items including boats, submarines and armored trains. If you compare it to the 1990s, and study the history of toy mak-ing, there is definitely the smell of large war in the air.

As toy historians know, military toys follow the politics. There were spikes in military toy production around the first and second world wars. This article is too small to discuss the many interesting things about my collection, world history and stories about individual model makers and manufacturers. My collection has a life of its own. You can also check my Facebook page at http://facebook.com/militarydiecast or website at www.militarydiecast.com. I love sharing my passion.

On February 28, 2006 at 4:45 PM, Maimah Karmo was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She had no fam-ily history of breast cancer and was only 32 years old. While undergoing her sec-ond round of chemotherapy, she made a promise to God that if she survived, she would create an organization to educate, empower, advocate for and support young women affected by breast cancer. After her second treatment, Tigerlily Founda-tion was born. Beginning in chemother-apy, Maimah grew Tigerlily Foundation from a concept to a national organization, with more than 300 volunteers nation-wide, providing breast health, wellness and transformational programs to young women in more than 43 states.

Although women over 40 have higher incidences of breast cancer, younger women tend to have more aggressive breast cancers and higher mortality rates, and therefore, are at a higher risk. They

are a largely under-recognized demographic, lacking in targeted education and services. Often, younger women and their practitioners are unaware that they get breast cancer, so Tigerlily focuses on education, prevention and support. Our programmatic goals are as follows: 1) To educate young women about breast health and encourage healthy lifestyle; 2) to end isolation/stigma among young breast cancer survivors (YBCS); 3) to improve quality of life and survivorship outcomes for YBCS; 4) to provide practical, culturally-sensitive, hands-on support; 5) to provide information/tools on becoming more effective self-advocates; 6) to decrease disparities facing young women; and 7) to facilitate timely access to preventative care, access to diagnostics, early detection tools and treatment.

A very important lesson that we have learned is that early detection is key in saving the lives of young women with breast cancer. Therefore, providing education to young women and healthcare providers is crucial. Here are three key notions that we like to teach young women:

1. Know Your Breasts. Do monthly self-exams – start your daughters at 13. Go for annual clinical breast exams and if you’re over 30, get your annual mammograms. Talk to your doctor so you learn what to look for become familiar with your body.

2. Be Your Best Advocate. Knowing your body means listening to it and being aware when things change. If you ever go to your doctor and think something is
