• Increased adoption of ISO 50001 could mean a reduction of CO2 emissions

equivalent to removing 215 million passenger vehicles from the road by 2030.

• Adopting the standard makes business sense, with predicted energy savings of

USD 600 billion over that same period.

• ISO 50001 empowers individual organizations: Living in a world of uncertainty,

companies cannot control prices, government policies or the global economy, but

they can improve the way they manage energy.

• ISO 50001 promotes a culture of efficiency: Better use of resources and assets,

less costs and consumption.

• ISO 50001 is the fastest growing standard.

• Global uptake of ISO 50001 over the first 12 months exceeded that of ISO

14001 in its initial 12 month period & has rivalled the number of uptakes

of the ISO 9001 in the 1990’s.

• Top three countries in the world for the total number of certificates were

Germany, Spain and Denmark, while the top four for growth in the number

of certificates in 2012 were Germany, Denmark, Italy & Ireland.

• Pressure from OEM’s is the main ISO 50001 certification driver for suppliers.

• 31 sites have been ISO 50001 certified in SA.

• 24 of the certified sites were assisted by NCPC-SA’s IEE Project.

• 96% of companies that are ISO 50001 certified were already ISO 9001 and/or ISO

14001 certified → Better integration for ISO standards.

• SA organisations are getting re-certified ASAP.

• No incentive program for ISO 50001 certified companies.

• Only 11% of the companies that implement EnMS have gone for ISO 50001

certification.

Zimalco Aluminium Company (ZIMALCO)

Automotive - Gauteng

ZIMALCO is the largest manufacturer of secondary aluminium products

in sub-Saharan Africa. The company is also South Africa’s only

manufacturer of primary aluminium-based master alloys, hardeners

and grain refiners. The Zimalco plant has a capacity in excess of 30 000

ton per year and employs more than 160 people. Raw materials are

obtained from many of the South African aluminium converters, scrap

metal recyclers and when required from the primary aluminium

smelters.

• Despite the challenges, results are encouraging.

• Success won’t happen overnight & some organisations may become impatient.

• Raising awareness of the value and increasing recognition of certification can drive

further adoption.

• Some companies are still focused on becoming ISO 90001 & ISO 14001 certified.

• The uptake of ISO 50001 certification can improve in SA.

• Incentives can off-set the cost of certification.

• We want more companies to know about ISO 50001 & to adopt it, because this can

really make an impact!!!

• SME’s are not going for ISO 50001 certification in SA.
