ISOLAR ORNILUX®
A WINNING COMBINATION –GLASS ARCHITECTURE AND BIRD PROTECTION
ISOLAR ORNILUX® – THE CLEAR SOLUTION TO BIRD COLLISIONS WITH GLASS
Everyday – nearly 250.000 birds are killed
in Europe by collisions with glass windows,
glass doors or glass building facades. This is
because birds do not recognize transparent
glass surfaces as dangerous barriers. Birds
are also endangered by misleading reflections
of trees or bushes in glass. The result: deadly
collisions.
Arnold Glas has developed a smart solution to
bird collisions by using the latest scientific
research: ISOLAR ORNILUX® Bird Protection
Glass.
ISOLAR ORNILUX® mikado –
The Transparent Favorite of
BirdFriendly Architecture
Scientific studies have shown that many bird
species have extra cone cells in the retina of
their eyes, which give birds a high sensitivity
to UV-light. And in nature, birds use their en-
hanced “UV-vision” routinely – for example,
to see spider webs which are spun using
UV-reflective fibers. At Arnold Glas, experts
are using this “spider web effect” to manu-
facture Bird Protection Glass with a unique
UV-reflecting coating for use in windows and
building facades.
ISOLAR ORNILUX® mikado glass has a trans-
parent, patterned, UV-reflective coating, making
i t v isible to birds, whi le remaining virtual ly
transparent to the human eye.

A bang – a shock – some feathers stuck to
the window – then it is over: Another bird was
killed by collision with glass. But somehow, a
bad feeling remains with the homeowners, who
have unfortunately seen this happen before. The
truth is, bird strikes occur often with houses or
apartments that use a lot of glass. And although
open views of natural settings are attractive for
us – the reflections from conventional glass
windows are deadly for birds. Luckily however,
modern glass architecture and bird protection
can now be successfully combined. Here is a
practical example of how Bird Protection Glass
was used in Germany for the modernization of a
single family home.
The house itself was built in the 1970’s near
Koblenz, Germany, in a small suburban com-
munity of 2.200 on the edge of a local forest
in the Hunsrück region. The surroundings are
beautiful: open sky, passing clouds, rolling
fields and green shrubbery everywhere. Nat-
urally, all of this is also reflected by wind ows.
But for birds those reflections often proved to
be fatal illusions, because homeowners regu-
larly found dead birds next to their windows.
ISOLAR ORNILUX® mikado insulating glass at natural light conditions.
About four years ago a local couple decided to
give their house a major facelift. They wanted
the house to be more modern, brighter, and
friendlier. They also planned to significantly
increase the size of the house’s windows – to
create an open, spacious appearance. Nor-
mally, you might think that such a house with
its ivy covered walls would be dangerous to
birds – but the actual number of bird-strikes
was dramatically reduced, with the help of
new Bird Protection Glass from Arnold Glas.
This is because this glass has a special surface
coating – to make the glass visible to birds, but
practically invisible to the human eye.
Today, bird strikes only occur on the con-
ventional windows of the house. And on the
larger, roughly 26 m², ISOLAR ORNILUX®
mikado windows with UV-reflective coating
there are practically none. The homeowners
had learned about ISOLAR ORNILUX® mikado
at a scientific conference and now they are
very happy that they chose Bird Protection
Glass: “For us, it was a total success.”

ISOLAR ORNILUX® MIKADO IN PRACTICE: SINGLE FAMILY HOME WITH BIRD PROTECTION GLASS
ISOLAR ORNILUX® glass can be easily in-
stalled – without special tools or technical re-
strictions – just like other types of insulating
or laminated glass. Plus, it is ideally suited
for large glass surfaces, such as: building
facades, display windows, winter gardens,
animal enclosures, and glass sound barriers
or flood control walls. In addition, the ISOLAR
ORNILUX® product family is being expanded
with new products to cover other uses, as
well as being tested with other glass types
and low-e/solar control coatings.

SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN EFFECTIVENESS
Statistically Significant Results
Arnold Glas is one of the true pioneers in the
development of Bird Protection Glass solu-
tions. In 2003 they began working with the
Radolfzell Bird Conservatory, Germany, to
develop testing methods for comparing the
effectiveness of various glass prototypes.
The result was development of the first “bird
flight tunnel” which was later improved and
enhanced in Russia and the USA. So far, over
120 different glass types have been tested.
Testing Method: In a darkened “flight tunnel“ a bird is released from point (A) towards a two-pane window frame containing a sheet of test glass (T) and a sheet of control glass (K). Bird collisions are prevented by a thin protective netting (N) in front of the glass. Each of the birds used in the test, was only allowed to take one flight and was later released. Afterwards, the numbers of bird flights directed towards the different glass sheets were statistically analyzed. 100 flights per test glass were conducted to attain statistically valid results. From 100 total flights per test pane a min of 60 have to be directed towards the control pane to receive a statistically significant result (e. g. deviation from uniform distribution).

ceived numerous awards. They have been
honored with the “Innovation Prize for Archi-
tectural Construction,” a nomination for the
“2007 German Design Prize,” and the entire
ISOLAR ORNILUX® product family received
the “Industrial Innovation Award 2007” as
well as the “Progress Award” from the inter-

Arnold Glas was named as one of Germany’s
most innovative companies because of its
development of Bird Protection Glass by the
federal initiative “365 Locations in the Land of
Ideas.”
In the USA – ISOLAR ORNILUX® mikado has
developed a solid reputation as well. In 2010,
ISOLAR ORNILUX® mikado glass products

The effectiveness of new glass types must be tested in the “flight tunnel“.Therefore, variations relative to glass thickness and spacer width may result in a deviation of the bird approach rate achieved with tested glass build-ups.
ORNILUX® glass products have shown in controlled flight tunnel studies to significantly reduce bird collisions (min 70% of birds tested fly towards the control and achieved ABC „EFFECTIVE“ rating). www.birdsmartglass.org ABC Glass Collesions Program presents a comprehensive resource to help stop birds hitting windows and the flight tunnel ratings are the basis for the LEED Pilot Credit 55 for bird collision deterrence. www.usgbc.org
The following ISOLAR ORNILUX® mikado glass types have been tested in flight tunnel testing and resulted in significantly fewer bird approaches
than conventional clear control glass panes (6 mm Float glass). For better comparison of the Ug-values all double glazed glass types are shown
with 16 mm spacer and all triple glazed glass types with 2 x 14 mm spacer.
