Therearemanychallengesintodaysbackupandrecoveryenvironmentsnomatterwhichbackupproductisinuse.First,unprecedenteddatagrowthisovertaxingtraditionaldataprotectionapproachesandtechnologies,leadingtoincreaseduncertaintyaboutprotectionstatus.Second,multipleprotectionmethodsleadstodatasilos.Whetheritsdifferenttypesofreplicationormultiplebackupapplicationsorboththiscreatessilosthatmakeitdifficulttoknowwhatisprotectedandifitsproperlyprotected.Lastly,therestheshiftfromphysicaltovirtualserverinfrastructure.Theprocessesandtechnologiesthatworkedwellinaphysicalenvironmentmaynotbethemosteffectiveinavirtualone.Thisallleadstoincreasingchallengesanduncertaintyforprotectingbusinesscriticaldata,aswellasaddedcostandcomplexity.



Letstakeadeeperlooktoseewhatscontributingtosomeofthesechallenges.First,therearedatasilosthatresultfromhavingmultiplewaystoprotectdata.Sincetheresnosingleview,itleadstoalackofvisibilityintotheoverallprotectionenvironment.Thisleadstoalotofinefficientmanualefforttocollectandunifythisdata,byreviewinglogfilesandthentryingtodoanalysisthroughspreadsheets.Alternatively,companiesturntoscripting,whichisexpensive,timeconsuming,andneverthoroughenoughtocoverallelementsintheenvironment.Andforthemostcriticaldataprotectedbyreplication,companiesoftenresorttoreplicationdisasterrecoverytesting.Thisisatimeconsumingandexpensivemanualprocess.Assuch,itgenerallyonlyhappenstwiceayearasanallhandsondeckexercise.Intodaysdynamic,everchangingenvironment,theresjusttoomuchchangehappeningtomakethiseffective.Inmanycases,administratorshavelittleornotimetovalidatetherecoverabilityoftheirdata,whichisevenworse.Whichleads,intheend,torecoveryuncertainty.Isyourdatarecoverableattheapplicationlevel?Canyoumeetyourauditrequirementsfordataprotection?

ThearchitectureofDPAstillconsistsofthethreemaincomponents:ApplicationServer,Datastore,andDataCollectionAgent.BuiltuponstandardJBoss ApplicationServertechnology,theDPAServerisaunifiedApplicationServerthatreplacesseparateservicesfoundinpreviousversionsofDPA,namelyController,Reporter,Listener,PublisherandAnalysisEngine.ThesearenowfunctionsperformedbytheunifiedApplicationServer.TheDPAdatabase,embeddedintheproduct,isasingledatastore thatconsolidatesthethreedatabasesofprioreditions,namelyConfig,Datamine,andIlluminator.ThisconsolidationallowsnotonlyforatighterintegrationbetweenDPAsbackupandreplicationtechnologies,butalsoforbetterperformanceandsupportability.TheData CollectionAgentcomponent istheprocessthatgathersdatafromanapplicationordevice.An AgentisautomaticallyinstalledonboththeDPAApplicationServerand DPADatastorewhenyouinstallthosecomponents.DPA6supportsbothnewDPA6agentsandoldDPA5.5+collectors.TheagentssendthecollecteddataasXML.



Inversion6.0,thearchitectureofDPAhaschanged.Theaccesslayeratthetopofthescreennowinvolvesaradicallydifferentwayinmechanism.TheapplicationtalkstotheDataCollectionAgent,theUI,andtheCLIviaaRESTful APIonly,whichhasbecomethecommoninterfaceforexchanginginformation.Asmentionedbefore,theunifiedDPAApplicationServerreplacesseparateController,Reporter,Listener,PublisherandAnalysisEnginefrompreviousversionsofDPAandthosefunctionsrunasexecutableJavaprogramspackagedinJARfiles.DPA6.0includesahighperformancemessagebus,whichmanagesitsownpersistenceratherthanrelyingonadatabaseorthirdpartypersistenceengine.Themessagebususesanappendonlyjournalforthepersistenceofmessagesandtransactions,consistingofasetoffilesondiskthathavebeenprecreatedtoafixedsizeandinitiallyfilledwithpadding.Filesizeisconfiguredtofitonadiskcylinder,whichminimizesthenumberofdiskcylindersperfile,andsinceanentirediskcylinderisaccessiblebyonediskrotation,andmessagesaresimplyaddedtotheendofthejournal,diskheadmovementisminimized.Anotherjournalisopenedwhenthecurrentoneisfull,andJBoss Messaginghasasophisticatedgarbagecollectionalgorithmthatremovesdeletedmessagesanddeterminesifaparticularjournalisneededanymore;ifnotthefileisreclaimedforreuse.



ThefoundationoftheDPAServerisJBoss AS(JavaBeanOpenSourceSoftwareApplicationServer),anopensourceJavaEEbasedapplicationserveroriginallydevelopedbyJBoss,nowadivisionofRedHat.JBoss ASisarchitectedtobeseamlesslyembeddableinapplications,insuchawaythatitiscompletelycustomizabletotherequirementsoftheapplicationitself.JBoss ASoffersenterpriseclassreliability,performance,scalabilityandhighavailability.



TheDPA6.0ServercomeswithanewindustrystandardRESTAPIforaccesstotheDPAdatathroughstandardHTTP(S)/XMLprotocols.ThisinterfaceallowsforDPAintegrationwithotherEMCmanagementproductsviamashup technology.DPA6.0alsousestheRESTAPItolaunchresponsestoeventsinitiatedbytheUI,theDataCollectionAgentortheCLI.ShownisasuccinctaccountofwhathappensafteraUIloginrequestisreceived.



DPA6.0usesasingledatastore insteadofthethreetraditionaldatastores (Config,Datamine,andIlluminator).Thisdatastore hasbeenbuiltonPostgreSQL 9.1technology.DuetoitsclosealignmentwiththeApplicationServer,thenewdatastore allowsforbetterperformancebysupportinginstallationontheApplicationServeroronaseparatesystem.DPA6.0doesnotallow"root"executionofthePostgreSQL server.Topreventpossiblesystemsecuritycompromise,theservercanbeaccessedonlybytheapollosuperuser,anunprivilegedOSuseraccountthatenjoysallPostgreSQL rights.Thisrendersthedatastore inaccessiblefordirectmanipulationbyusers,whomustinsteadusetheRESTAPItoextract,create,modifyanddeletedata.Thedatastore islocatedinthe/opt/emc/dpa/services/datastore subdirectory,whichcontainstwofolders:Data,fortheDPAApplicationServerdata,andEngine,forthePostgres binaries.Thedatastore transactionlogsarelocatedinthepg_xlog folderinsidedata.Forqueries,thedatastore usesacachesizeof1024MB.Captureofstderr andcsvlog isenabledandlogswiththeformatofdatastoreyearmonthdayhourminutesecond.logarewrittentothedatastore/dataspg_log subdirectory.Logrotationsizeis250MBandautomaticrotationoflogfileswillhappenafteroneday.Thedatastore,whichsupportsamaximumof100simultaneousconnections(100preparedtransactions),listensbydefaultonlocalhost,althoughitcanalsolistenonanumberofaddressesprovidedasacommaseparatedlist.ItusesTCP/IPport9003.



DPA6.0sAnalysisEngineiseventdriven.ItdetectschangesinanobjectsstateasdatastreamsinfromtheDPAAgent.Itiscapableofdoingthatbecauseitkeepsthestatusoftheobjectandassociatedrulesinmemory,whichallowsfortheevaluationofrulesuponrelevantchange.Eventdrivenarchitecture,orEDA,givesDPA6.0theabilitytoissuealertsinnearrealtime,enablingdataprotectionadministratorstomakepromptdecisions.TheAnalysisEnginesoperatesbasedonanalysispolicies.Ananalysispolicyisacollectionofoneormorerulesthatisassignedtoanobjectorgroup.Rulescontainthelogicforwhentoissueanalert.DPAcomparescollecteddatainthedatastore totheconditionsintheruletotriggeralerts.EventbasedrulestriggeranalertinresponsetodatathatisstreamingintotheDPAserver.Schedulebaserulesperiodicallycheckwhethertoissueanalert.Alertscancontaindynamictextualinformationandmightincludepopulatedlinkstoreports.Onlyanalysispoliciescangeneratealerts.



TheDPAServercanrunoneitherSolaris,Windows,orLinuxplatforms.TheDPAwebconsolerunsfromabrowser.TheEMCDataProtectionAdvisorSoftwareCompatibilityGuide providesacomprehensivelistingofsystemrequirements.



YoucanconfigureaAgenttomonitorcertaintypesofdataremotely.Whenperformingremotemonitoring,themachineonwhichtheAgentisrunningiscalledtheproxyserver.Togatherdata,theAgentusesaremoteprotocoltocommunicatewiththemachinefromwhichitiscollectingdata,thenforwardsthatinformationbacktotheDPAserverasshowninthediagramabove.Theremoteprotocoltypedependsonthetypeofdatathatisbeinggathered.NotallinformationcanbegatheredremotelyfromallapplicationsanddevicesthataresupportedbyDPA.Forcertaindevicestypes,suchasIPandFibre Channelswitches,datamustalwaysbegatheredremotelyasitisimpossibletoinstallaAgentdirectlyonaswitch.AlldatacanbegatheredremotelyfromtheagentlocatedontheDPAserver,withtheexceptionofsystemperformanceinformationfromUNIXmachines.TogathersystemperformanceinformationfromUNIXhosts,theagentmustbeinstalledontothemachine.
