Voorwoord Introduction

Nummer 2.Heerlijk om aan het begin van 2006 het tweede nummer van GUP uit te

brengen. Zeker na een zeer bewogen en druk 2005 waarin veel nieuwe initiatieven

zijn geboren. Buiten de introductie van GUP1, was er een fantastisch fotofestival

in het Olympisch Stadion van Amsterdam, een nieuwe fotografieprijs en de kersverse

HUP Gallery. Allen net zo enthousiast ontvangen, als hoe ze zijn ontstaan. Met

passie voor fotografie. Die passie was ook merkbaar tijdens Paris Photo 2005, waar

opmerkelijk veel nieuwe jonge bezoekers werden gespot, zoals je in GUP2 met een prachtige ‘portrait’ reeks zult zien. Wat te

denken van Desiree Dolrons precisiewerk. Verder presenteren we een portretportfo-

lio van een groot talent, geven we portfoli-otips, maken we je wegwijs in de kunst van

het taxeren en staan de komende expo’s weer netjes op een rij. Veel te kijken, te lezen en te doen dus. En je weet, ook in

het nieuwe jaar staan we open voor kritiek, nieuw werk en informatie die kan helpen

ons kleine landje verder op de internatio-nale fotografiekaart te zetten.

Issue 2.It’s a delight to publish the second issue of GUP so shortly before the new year. The year 2005 was extremely busy and eventful, resulting in many new initiatives. Besides the introduction of GUP1, a fantastic photography festival in Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium, a new photography award and the red-hot HUP Gallery; all were received with the same enthusiasm that inspired their origin - a passion for photography. That passion was also noticeable during Paris Photo 2005, where a remarkable number of new, young visitors were spotted, as you will see in GUP2. And what about Desiree Dolron’s precision work! Furthermore we present a portrait portfolio of an extremely talented young photographer, offer portfolio tips, teach you the basics of evaluating photos and all forthcoming exhibitions are listed. You can be sure that this year we will again welcome all suggestions, new work and information that may help us put our small country on the international photography map.

Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) is niet meer,

maar gelukkig liet hij ons veel visuele

lekkernijen na. Filmen was echter niet zijn

enige hobby. Het boek ‘Stanley Kubrick

Drama and Shadows: Photographs 1945-1950’

laat een andere zien.

Voordat Kubrick met films begon, werkte hij als

fotograaf bij het New Yorkse Look magazine.

Het boek geeft foto’s uit die periode prijs en

laat Kubricks eerste schreden op het pad van

compositie en dramatiek zien, welke later

bekende elementen in zijn films zouden worden.

Een retrospectief van Kubrick is tot 29 januari te

zien in ACMI te Melbourne (AUS). Het boek kost

rond de € 40.

Kubrick’s other camera

Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) is no longer

around, but fortunately he left us a bundle of

visual candy. However, filming wasn’t his only

hobby. The book ‘Stanley Kubrick Drama and

Shadows: Photographs 1945-1950’ shows us a

different one.

Before Kubrick started working on films he

was employed as a photographer with New

York based Look magazine. The book shows us

photos from this period and points out elements

like composition and drama for which Kubrick’s

films became known later on. A retrospective

on Kubrick’s work is shown in ACMI Melbourne

(AUS) till the 29th of January. The book costs

around € 40.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), director Stanley Kubrick

Desiree Dolron (1963, Haarlem, The

Netherlands) is currently one of Holland’s most

successful photographers. Her work has already

been bought by the Guggenheim museum in New

York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Dolron likes extremes.

From probing travel reports Te dí todos mis sueños

and Exaltation; Images of Religion and Death to

the staged series Xteriors, where her work takes

on painterly forms, her portraits and interiors

are inspired by the mysterious work of Johannes

Vermeer (1632-1675) or, according to Dolron, the

Danish master Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916).

GUP visited Paris Photo in le Caroussel du Louvre. Chez Paris Photo ‘05From November 16 to 20 galleries attending the biggest photography fair showed some of the best kept photography secrets and shared new talents with its visitors.

tezelfdertijd ter discussie stellen. De stillevens van Niehaus lijken in eerste

instantie traditioneel. Doch bij nadere beschouwing blijkt het op een

marmeren plateau gedrapeerde fruit minutieus van de schil ontdaan te zijn.

In tegenstelling tot een verdord boeket op de ene foto waarvan de vaas

tot de rand met vers water is gevuld, staan elders twee gele rozen droog,

maar niettemin in volle bloei. Aandoenlijk en woest tegelijk oogt het beeld

van een barok gecomponeerde fruitschaal op een donker houten tafelblad.

Het rotte fruit is niet rot, maar het werd aangevallen, met bruut geweld uit

elkaar gescheurd. Een aan witte draden opgehangen, opengesneden en

schoongemaakte verse vis, lijkt nog vol levenskracht. De vergankelijkheid is in

Niehaus’ foto’s grotesk aanwezig. Niehaus stelt de Vanitas-motieven niet alleen

ter discussie, hij geeft er een verrassende wending aan. Hij weigert aan de

klassieke tradities van het stilleven te voldoen. Wat blijft is verwondering en

ontzag voor zoveel meesterschap.

Arts and Design in Enschede from 1998

to 2002. Since then he took part in various

exhibitions in Amsterdam, Tecklenburg,

’s-Hertogenbosch and Berlin.

been meticulously removed. In one picture, there is a withered bouquet in

a vase filled with fresh water. In another, two yellow roses are standing dry

but are in full bloom. The image of an elaborately composed fruit bowl on

a dark wooden table top looks both moving and wild. Here, the fruit is not

rotten but has been attacked, torn in pieces with brute force. A fresh fish

hanging from white lines is cut open and gutted but still looks full of vitality.

The transitoriness of life features in Niehaus’ images in a grotesque manner.

Not only does Niehaus question the Vanitas themes, he also gives them an

unexpected twist. He refuses to comply with the classical traditions. In the end,

we can only be surprised and in awe of such great mastery.

Circa 75 werken van fotografe Rineke Dijkstra

(1959, Sittard) zijn in deze expositie te bewon-

deren. Zij brak internationaal door met haar

indrukwekkende portretreeksen. Met haar werk

onderzoekt Dijkstra de grenzen van het portret-

genre. De gefotografeerde mensen dragen vaak

een naam maar staan evenzeer model voor een

groep en ontstijgen het strikt individuele. In die

zin is zij leerlinge van de Amerikaanse fotografe

Diane Arbus die ook confronterende en ontluis-

terende mensbeelden wist vast te leggen.

Approximately 75 works by photographer

Rineke Dijkstra (1959, Sittard, The Netherlands)

are on show at this exhibition. She broke throu-

gh internationally with her impressive portrait

ranges. Through her work, Dijkstra examines the

borders of the portrait genre. The people photo-

graphed stand out on their own as an individual

with a name but represent a group of people:

mothers after giving birth, matodors still bloody

from a bullfight. In that sense, she’s a pupil of the

American photographer Diane Arbus who could

also capture the individual as well as humiliating

portrayals of mankind.

Op achttienjarige leeftijd werd Helena

Christensen (1968, Denemarken) ontdekt door

modefotograaf Peter Lindbergh die haar direct

fotografeerde voor de cover van Vogue. Zij werd

één van de supermodellen van de jaren negen-

tig. In 1997 werd ze creatief directeur en foto-

graaf van NYLON magazine, wat het begin zou

zijn van haar fotografiecarrière. Ze werkte zowel

voor internationale campagnes als magazines

(Dazed & Confused, Vogue, Revolver).

At the age of eighteen Helena Christensen (1968,

Denmark) caught the eye of fashion photograp-

her Peter Lindbergh who quickly shot her for

the Vogue cover. She became one of the leading

supermodels of the 1990’s. In 1997 she became

creative director and photographer of NYLON

magazine. From then on her photography career

took off. Her work includes international cam-

paigns as well as magazines (Dazed & Confused,

Vogue, Revolver).
