PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEBY BRYNE MCKAY

Vol. 54 Issue #01 January 2013 — Sidemount Reporter 1

As my first function as President Iwould like to thank Wayne Pruden for being our President for the past

two years. He stepped up when mostwould shy away since it followed our 50th

Anniversary year, a tough act to follow. Not only did he step up but he along withhis executive and volunteers did a great

job. Membership is climbing and attendance at functions isalso rising. Unless you served as President, you cannot imaginethe time & effort the job requires on a regular basis. Wayne,Thank You!

One more Thank you before we get to next year. As youknow our Annual Christmas Meeting/Party was on December9th. Marilynn Schultz stepped up to organize the ‘PARTY’ portion

of the afternoon. Marilynn & her ‘Gang’ (elves) entertained anddressed up all the children and grandchildren who in turnentertained the membership. She also arranged to have themain auditorium available for the meal which allowed for oodlesof room for serving and eating. So Thank You to Marilynn, her‘Gang’ and those who brought their children and grandchildren.

Now to 2013 —sounds like a sci-fi movie we watched askids but 2013 is the here and now. Also, can you believe a1988 car is 25 years old and qualifies as a club car. In no timeit will be 2014 and my year as your President will be over. Ihope in that time you feel your executive has enhanced yourMCAAC experience. I hope we added more interest to theGeneral Meetings and I hope we even enticed more women toattend. I hope we held several interesting day/weekend toursplus some garage tours. I hope our special events all lived upto your expectations. I hope we acted on all the input you gaveus. That will be our goal for 2013.

FLORENCE LEWERFLORENCE EDNA LEWER Peacefully on December 12, 2012, FloLewer passed away. She was predeceased by her husband RobertLewer and is survived by her son Glenn Lewer (Sheila Mary Wolfe),her daughter Roberta Giffen, and her grandsons Grayson and RielLewer. Flo requested a private interment with no service. In lieu offlowers please make a donation to the cancer organization of yourchoice.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyonehad a great holiday, I know I did. I overate, over drank and overall had awonderful time with family and friends. So, now as usual, comes that New

Year’s Resolution to lose some of the weight I put on over theholidays. How about you? What do you have in mind for someNew Year’s resolutions? How about we all resolve to show upto more MCAAC events this year! Let’s try and make this thebest year ever for participation by members. I mean when youthink about New Year’s resolutions most of them: lose weight, quick smoking, exercise more and all that kind of stuff is prettyhard to do. But saying you are going try and make it out tomore club events...how easy is that? No frustrations, nocravings...getting out and having a good time...wow that soundsgreat...I think I can resolve to do more of that...how about you?

• •I would like to welcome our new President, Bryne McKay andwish him the best of luck in his new role. While Bryne is new tothe role of President, he is known by all as he plied his tradewith Club Projects at MCAAC meetings and events, which isnow being taken over by Phil Hofer. I am sure Bryne will bringthe same enthusiasm to his role as President. Norbert Touchettehas taken on the role of Vice-President and I am sure will providewisdom gained while he was “first husband” to President/wifeEveline Touchette many years ago. Good luck to all theExecutive for 2013.

• •The repairs are moving along on the “Green Hornet” quite well. Most of the wiring has been replaced, just waiting on somelight sockets to complete that portion. Now I have to get someinterior trim painted. Just my luck, the technician from the shopwho took a bunch of pictures of the back of the gauge clusterlost his phone...with all the pictures on it. That’s going to makeputting all the wires back in the right place a little more difficultand time consuming. AARRGH....

ON THE COVER

Even though it was a bit cold outside, the sun was shining andwith that we had a great turn out for the December meeting/Christmas Party, with 65 adults and 6 children in attendance.

Our ‘gang’ must be together a long time as we were set upin no time. Maybe it was because the husbands that comealong really get into helping set up. Thanks to Nancy andGeorge Rogers, Lynda and Rick Enns, Otto So, Roberta Beach,Doreen McKay, Roz and Rick Strauss and Doug McRae for

coming out early to help Art and I for set up. Also to thesepeople, plus many others for helping with the clean up. Many

hands make for quick work. Art got tablecloth folding lessons101 from Nancy, Harry, Cecilia and possibly others, we werecleaning up that fast. Great fun!

We were also veryfortunate for themany treats that werebrought in by clubmembers to add tothe lunch provided bythe club. Manythanks to thosemembers, yourthoughtfulness ismuch appreciated.

Of course, asusual, the childrenstole the show. Coleand Skyler even

changed their minds as to how their faceswould be painted so they could keep incharacter with the presentation done bythe children. With fine young men asthese, our club benefits greatly with theircontribution to activities. The girls wereso cute too and a special thanks to theadult singers. So on this note, on behalf of Art and I, we

hope you all had a great Christmas and holiday season andwish you all the best for the New Year.

INTERESTING STUFF...

The GTO was the brainchild of Pontiac engineer Russell Gee, anengine specialist; Bill Collins, a chassis engineer; and Pontiac chiefengineer John DeLorean. In early 1963, General Motors'management issued an edict banning divisions from involvementin auto racing. At the time, Pontiac's advertising and marketingapproach was heavily based on performance, and racing was animportant component of that strategy. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac's young, visionary management turnedits attention to emphasizing street performance.

In his autobiography “Glory Days,” Pontiac chief marketingmanager Jim Wangers, who worked for the division’s contract

advertising and public relations agency, states that JohnDeLorean, Bill Collins and Russ Gee were indeed responsiblefor the GTO's creation. It involved transforming the upcomingredesigned Tempest (which was set to revert to a conventionalfront-engine, front transmission, rear-wheel drive configuration)into a "Super Tempest" with the larger 389 cu in (6.4 L) PontiacV8 engine from the full-sized Pontiac Catalina and Bonnevillein place of the standard 326 cu in (5.3 L) Tempest V8. Bypromoting the big-engine Tempest as a special high-performance model, they could appeal to the speed-mindedyouth market (which had also been recognized by Ford MotorCompany's Lee Iacocca, who was at that time preparing theFord Mustang).

The name, which was DeLorean's idea, was inspired by theFerrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italianabbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato.

THE ORIGINAL 1966 TV BATMOBILE OWNED BYGEORGE BARRIS TO CROSS AUCTION BLOCK AT

BARRETT-JACKSON SCOTTSDALE

Scottsdale, Ariz. – (November 29, 2012) – Barrett-Jackson,the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, announced todaythat it will offer one of the most recognized and popular piecesof entertainmenthistory worldwide,at its 42nd annualS c o t t s d a l eauction inJanuary – the only1955 Lincoln Futura concept car which was heavily modifiedby legendary customizer George Barris to become the original1966 Batmobile in the live action TV series Batman, as well asthe movie adaptation, starring Adam West. The car will crossthe block alongside Barrett-Jackson’s 5000 Series on Saturday,January 19th from approximately 5:00pm – 9:00pm.

Still as striking as when it first came out of the paint shop, the original Batmobile has been a part of Barris’ personalcollection since he first bought it from the Ford Motor Companyfor a dollar in 1965. Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction willmark the first time the car has gone up for sale since then.

Bringing the Batmobile to LifeThe original one-off 1955Lincoln Futura concept carwas originally created byFord Motor Company and adesign team at the LincolnStyling Department. The 19-foot long, two-seat, bubble-topped grand touring car prototype was entirely hand-built in1954 by Ghia Body Works in Turin, Italy, and unveiled in itsoriginal pearlescent Frost-Blue white paint finish in 1955 at theChicago Auto Show.

The car featured instruments housed in the steering wheel,as well as a push-button transmission, exterior microphones topick up and transmit the sounds of traffic to the occupantsinside, and a host of other innovative devices. According toseveral reports, it was described as a “rolling laboratory” fromwhich Ford would learn about new technology to apply to theirproduction automobiles. In 1959, sporting a fresh red paint job,the Futura was featured in the film, It Started with a Kiss, starringDebbie Reynolds and Glenn Ford.

Barris then acquired the vehicle and kept it in his garage for

several years. In late 1965, 20th Century Fox Television andWilliam Dozier’s Greenway Productions contacted Barris andasked him to produce a Batmobile for the upcoming TV series. With only 15 days and $15,000 budget to build a Batmobile,Barris decided to transform the Lincoln Futura concept car intowhat is now widely recognized as the original and iconic crime-fighting vehicle.

“The 1966 Batmobile by George Barris is one of the mostfamous Hollywood cars in history and it has become a trueicon that has been carried from generation to generation ofBatmobiles to follow,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEOof Barrett-Jackson. “This vehicle not only marks the significantBat logo that sits on the middle of its door, but a time in televisionhistory where they defied the odds of making a car the real starof the show. It revolutionized an entire industry that followed inits footsteps and we couldn’t be prouder to have it cross ourblock in Scottsdale as it goes up for sale for the very first time.”The car features a 390-in 1956 Lincoln V-8 engine and a B&MHydro Automatic transmission. Gadgets include a nose-mounted aluminum Cable Cutter Blade, Bat Ray Projector, Anti-Theft Device, Detect-a-scope, Batscope, Bat Eye Switch,Antenna Activator, Police Band Cut-In Switch, Automatic TireInflation Device, Remote Batcomputer, the Batphone,Emergency Bat Turn Lever, Anti-Fire Activator, Bat Smoke, BatPhotoscope, and many other Bat gadgets. If needed, theBatmobile was capable of a quick 180° “bat-turn” thanks totwo rear-mounted ten-foot Deist parachutes. In addition to being featured on various television/movie sets, the original Batmobile has been exhibited at numerous carshows and museums around the nation. The car is alsoexclusively featured in Christopher Nolan’s BatmobileDocumentary, which can be viewed as a bonus feature on TheDark Knight Rises DVD. It will go up for auction along withmemorabilia and documentation from Barris’ personal archives.“There are only a few things in life that are able to capture thesoul of an era and the Batmobile by George Barris did exactlythat,” said Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “Thereare the real fans that will strongly advocate, till this day, thatcoming home to watch the Batmobile soar out of the Batcavedefines a lot of their first childhood memories. Whether you’rea car collector, entertainment enthusiast, or an average Joelooking to buy his dream car, you’re going to want to witnesshistory being made in January with the sale of this car.”
