Welcome to a New Year of Exploration, Equipping & Engaging our young people in Singapore and beyond! We spent the

last few months of 2013 reminiscing and revisiting our past achievements for the past eight years. I am extremely touched and proud to see many of our past youth participants becoming interns, staff and volunteers of Agape, it is heartening to see that they share our belief in what we do and why we do it.

We started off the new year busy preparing for our SQM (Singapore Quality Medallion) award. In Agape, we believe in offering the best quality training programmes for all our partners and we are extremely proud to be shortlisted for this award. We are also working towards our launch of ”Agape10” in celebration of our upcoming 10th Birthday. Lastly, we have also been confirmed the launch of Singapore’s 1st Professional Code of Conduct & Safety Council for Youth Training Sector.

As the demographic and profile of our youths changes, Agape recognizes the need to expand our capabilities and capacity to meet these growing demands. We are in the preliminary stage of drafting up a master plan for the year 2020 – with the aim of reaching out to 500,000 youths globally and locally. Our commitment towards facilitating the achieving of greater self and society growth through experiential learning remains unchanged.

We will be investing in two key areas to achieve our goals: ”Youth empowerment” is a change in the attitudes, structural & cultural process when young people gain the ability to make decisions and implement a positive change in their own lives and the lives of other people.

”Transformation of Youth Leaders”, a process where we encourage and actively create platforms for youths to be world-ready and to be youths of good character, purpose and heart.

The public and our partners recognise that Agape’s strength is only as good as the people in it. We remain commited in the stringent selection of our staff and vendors. In addition to the stellar professional qualifications, a common trait of our trainers and professional partners is their involvement in some form of social work. This ensures that our people have the right heart and are genuinely interested in social and youth development.

This year we have an injection of new faces to our team and with it, a change of management. We believe the new additions to our family will bring with them a refreshing, renewed vigour. I am confident that the new team will be able to continue our tradition of upholding professionalism in every endeavours. Our cumulative diverse experience and personalities enable us to meet the requirements of our clients. We remain committed to delivering powerful, empowering and transformative programmes.

Through the launch of our newsletter, we hope that to share with you some feature programmes, upcoming plans and post-event reports. May this new year be even more breathtaking than the last. Let’s continue to put a smile on the faces of people we touch!

Agape Group Holdings held its 15th intake of youths for the Certificate in Design and

Facilitate Experiential Learning (CDFEL) programme on the 16th -17th of December in Bethesda Care and Counselling Services Centre. The two days were filled with learning and laughter as youths come together to seek a deeper understanding of various effective training and facilitation skills.

• Acquiring facilitation skills for team learning.

• Using Experiential Learning Framework in creating great teams.

The youths learnt various methods of engaging participants, empowering them through structured decision-

Through their short but meaningful two-day learning journey, aspiring youth facilitators and trainers will learn the skills, knowledge, and dispositions central to experiential education and are provided with ”in-class” and ”out-of-class” opportunities to design lesson plans, prepare presentations, and engage in activities that have direct, transferrable relevance.

The programme consists of a mix of both theoretical lessons and hands-on activities which integrate experiential learning pedagogy into their adventure or classroom practices, including:

• Designing & Facilitating a Team-building Workshop.

• Improving understanding of team dynamics, learning and personalities.

making and ultimately enabling them to reflect on their learning experiences through the exciting activities conducted.

Here in Agape, we strongly believe that an unreflected upon experience is a lost experience. The concept behind Experiential Learning is for an individual to reflect upon one’s experience, only then can the participant discern between the right or wrong decisions made.

It is only at this reflective juncture that effective learning is achieved.

At the end of the two days, participating youths are equipped with skills that allow them to better engage future participants of their own and effectively pass down knowledge to mould better leaders for tomorrow.

2nd January marks the first day of school and while most students packed their bags for regular classes, over 90 Secondary One

students of Hwa Chong International School packed for a three-day, two-night camp in Batam, Indonesia.

Instead of a conventional orientation programme to assimilate them into the new environment, the new Secondary One students bravely embraced the opportunity to venture into an off-site camp where they went through several experiential learning activities to learn more about themselves and to bond with one another as a class.

Themed Inception, the innovative orientation programme was indeed an eye-opening experience for everyone. Having grown up in the city, the students got to personally participate in many outdoors activities for the first time. Activities such as jungle trekking and outdoor cooking provided refreshing new experience for the students.

The highlight of the camp was the dinner and dance held on the second night and saw the students, student facilitators and trainers performing on stage with specially-prepared performances. The night concluded on a high note with spectacular and stunning fireworks lasting over five minutes long.

Agape trainers, together with the facilitators from Hwa Chong student council, had helped to forge a tighter bond with the students by the end of the camp.

A MEANINGFUL JOURNEY OF CARING, SHARING, GIVING AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURE!

T he Secondary Three youth leaders from Bishan Park Secondary School (BPSS) had a wonderful kickstart to the

year, embarking on a 3-day, 2-nights journey of learning to Desaru for the annual BPSS Discovery Week.

With the aim of fostering teamwork and building positive character and leadership values, this exciting adventure of self-discovery has created opportunities for the budding generation of youth leaders to forge stronger bonds beyond the class and among the entire cohort.

”The best example of Leadership, is Leadership by example.” Throughout the many meaningful activities of the camp, these passionate youth leaders exuded their spirit of caring

Bishan Park and sharing in the Values-in-Action (VIA) segment, where they personally conceptualised and contributed impactful initiatives to Johor Bahru Home of Disabled Children in Kulai, Johor. Besides buying and delivering daily necessities to the Home, youth leaders also rolled up their sleeves and put their plans into action ranging from distributing food, cleaning and maintaining the Home compound, raising funds and organising fun games and activities to enliven the lives of others. For many of the students who grew up in the comforts of the urban cityscape, the visit to the Home was both an eye-opening experience and a great opportunity to make a positive difference and give back to the less-fortunate members of our society.

In Agape, we strongly believe that the successful leadership is based on the positive efforts and contributions to the community, the society and ultimately the betterment of others before self. As such, the BPSS Discovery Week seeks to nurture and groom every student, every individual into useful

members of the society, inculcating in them the positive intentions and altruistic learning values to serve the community and the people in need. Agape is glad to be a part of the meaningful journey with the staff, partners and youth leaders of BPSS to provide youth-led and youth-initiated assistance directly for charitable causes beyond borders.
