Faith News Our grade 4 students were very blessed to spend Ash Wednesday with the NET team who spent the day talking to our students about the meaning of Lent. Students had the opportunity to participate in special activities and prayer which were aimed at educating our students on the importance of fasting, praying, and almsgiving during the season of Lent. The whole school was also fortunate to have NET share their musical talents with us and helped to prepare our students to sing along during our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Special thanks to the NET team for sharing their time and talent with us. After the conclusion of our wonderful Ash Wednesday celebration, Grade 3 Irving buried the remainder of the ashes under a tree in our back field, giving the gift of the ashes back to the earth. We have now entered into the season of Lent. Lent occurs for the 40 days between Ash
Wednesday and Holy Thursday. The 40 days of Lent are based on two biblical accounts:
the 40 years the Israelites wandered, and the Lord’s 40 days in the wilderness
when he was tempted by Satan.
It is a time of preparation for Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice for us. Christians participate in fasting, prayer, and almsgiving to
strengthen our faith and devotion.

The Stations of the Cross have been posted in our Gymnasium for this season of Lent. Students in Grade 3 prayed and reflected on the importance of Jesus’s sacrifice for us during the last few weeks of Lent in February. Students, their families and staff members are also invited to
join together in the gym each Friday morning at 8 a.m. for the remainder of the Lenten season. From 8 - 8:30 we will pray the Stations of the Cross together and perform an activity or exercise to go along with the prayer for each station. We are called to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for all of us during this time. We look forward to seeing parents, students and teachers in the upcoming weeks!

Penitential Service at St. Mary’s Church
Thursday, March 10th 7:00 p.m.
What is a jubilee year? The practice of a jubilee year has ancient roots in the Jewish tradition. The jubilee year
was called every fifty years and was a time for forgiveness. It stood as a reminder of God’s providence and mercy. The dedication of a year for this emphasis provided the
community with a time to come back into right relationship with one another and with God. As the practice of the jubilee year was adopted into the Catholic Church, these
themes of mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity continued.
hoW long Will this jubilee year of Mercy last? It began on December 8th, 2015 and lasts until November 20, 2016.
Holy Years do not necessarily last 365 days.
What’s the difference betWeen an ordinary jubilee and an extraordinary jubilee?
There are ordinary Jubilees and extraordinary Jubilees. Since 1475, the ordinary Jubilee has been celebrated once every 25 years. Extraordinary ones are called only for special occasions. Until now, there have been 24 ordinary jubilees and four extraordinary. The
Jubilee of Mercy, convened by Pope Francis, will be the fifth. The last extraordinary was convoked by Pope John Paul II in 1983. He also convoked the last ordinary one,
the Jubilee of the Year 2000.
What is the Meaning of the year of Mercy logo? The figure of Christ (the Good Shepherd) has a person draped over his shoulders in the
manner of the lost sheep that He seeks out. Jesus has taken our humanity upon himself. His eyes are merged with those of man. The scene is captured within the so called man-dorla (the shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and medieval iconogra-
phy, for it calls to mind the two natures of Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father who forgives all
Declaring the upcoming jubilee, Pope Francis powerfully calls on the Catholic Church to
refashion as a place not of judgment but of pardon. In proclaiming an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy he
is drawing us into God’s unfailing mercy, strengthening, healing and equipping us to fulfill his
plan for our life.
the year of Mercy
page 14 - March
What is the holy door? The Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome is normally opened just once every 25 years. In fact, a brick wall is built to cover it until it is
torn down for the next Jubilee. Because this is an extraordinary Jubilee, the Holy Door is
being opened early (just 15 years after it was closed).
The Holy Door symbolizes the extraordinary way that Catholics can open themselves up to their faith. For pilgrims, the highlight of their journey is walking through the Holy Door. On Sunday, December 13th, for the first time in
the history of the Jubilee Years, there will be Holy Doors opened in all the cathedrals of
the world, and that local Ordinaries (Bishops) have been empowered for the occasion to
offer the Papal Blessing to all who take part.
To help raise awareness about the Holy Year of Mercy, a door in every school in CTR Catholic Schools has been designated to bear the logo and message of this jubilee year.
