When seasoned Staten Island jeweler, Jerry Amerosi, de-cided to take the plunge and be the f i rst jeweler in New

York City to open a Pandora store, he knew he had a customer following that was ripe for this type of cutting-edge product, a great location in the Stat-en Island Mall, and a unique and exquisite jewelry product that is endearing for many because of its personalization feature. Top that with i t being af-fordable and he knew i t would be a success. What he didn’t expect, however, was that his sales at his original jewelry store in the mal l , Gerald Peters Goldmine, would tr iple!

“Pando r a p roduc t s spea k f o r themselves. Their f ine craf tsmanship, t he ind i v idua l i t y o f each p iece, and t he company’s commitment to providing a sharp product for every income level, made this new venture for me an easy decision. Adding a new store, however, was risky for an economic time such as this, but what I learned is that adding more var iet y to your inventor y complements your overal l business; i t does not take away f rom your or iginal product l ine,” commented Jerr y Amerosi, owner of Pandora on Staten Is land and Gerald Peters Goldmine Jewelers, both located in the Staten Is land Mall.

Since the opening of Pandora, Jerry and his staf f have been able to meet their customers’ needs bet ter by having the oppor tuni t y now to refer t hem to e i t her s tore (Pandora or Goldmine) to ful f i l l their purchasing needs.

Recen t news re leased f rom Homeland Secur i t y prompts Jer r y Amerosi, a jeweler wi th decades of exper ience in the business and owner of and the f irs t Pandora store in New York Ci t y (both stores are located in the Staten Is land Mall ), to remind his customers

and neighbors that buying counter feit jewelry, “knock-of fs”, just doesn’t pay of f. I t doesn’t pay of f to the buyer of i t and most cer ta inly to t he repu t ab le bus iness owners in our communit y sel l ing the “real deal”.

“The perpetuat ion of knock-of fs is dr iven by the belief that you are get t ing a good deal. A l though pr ices may be cheaper with knock-of fs, the t rade-of f in quali t y, usefulness, and lifespan of what you purchase, is diminished. And, in this bad economy, it directly hurts the financial well-being of the “mom and pop” stores here in our communi t y - o u r n e i g h b o r s , “commented Je r r y Amerosi.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and yet most of us don’t do enough to maintain our skin’s health. Americans spend millions on body products every

month, but are they buying the right ones? How much do you real ly know about what your skin needs, what type of skin you have, what kind of soaps and lotions are the best for your skin? What about those products that promise younger-looking, wrinkle-free skin, do they work?

the purpose of SkinOne of your skins funct ions is to eliminate a

por t ion of the body’s waste products through sweat ing. I f tox ins escape through the sk in they disrupt the sk in’s hea l th integr i t y. This is one of the key factors behind many sk in d i so rde r s i nc lud ing acne. The sk in a l so “breathes”. I f t he pores become c logged, t he microbes that a re invo lved in caus ing acne f lour ish.

Great look ing sk in is a wonder fu l th ing to have because it ’s r ight there on your face, i t ’s k ind of hard to h ide. The sk in a lso protect s our bodies from the outside world. Most of us don’t think our sk in is so great look ing. Even if you were born with a per fect complexion, or one that is not so good, you should make an ef for t to t ake care of i t cor rect ly. When you are going through adolescence  your body is t r y ing to adjus t to changes in the hormone ba lance, and this af fects your sk in big t ime.

Skin types There are three basic skin t ypes, but you

may f ind yours isn’t exact ly l ike any of those described here. Most skin is a mixture of these types and yours will be no exception. The basic skin types are dry, oily, and combination. Dark skins have a tendency towards greater extremes of dryness and oil iness than paler skins.

oily SkinYou can tel l i f your sk in is oi ly because i t

usual ly has a shine to i t. I t may be prone to black heads and acne. Oily sk in conta ins a lot of sebum which helps prevent the sk in f rom dr y ing ou t. However, o i l y sk in tends to at t ract more dir t and dust than dr y sk in. I t benef i t s f rom soap and water, so washing with a cleansing bar is an ideal way of car ing for i t . Use warm water to loosen the di r t , then use cold water to r inse. Use toners and astr ingents containing alcohol and always use a l ight, non-greasy l iquid cleanser. Ver y oi ly sk in needs no ex t ra moistur iz ing at a l l whi le you are in your teens.

Dry skinDry sk in looks dr y, somet imes f lakes, and

of ten feels t ight, especially if you have washed it with soap and water. Sometimes it is lacking some of the protect ive sebum and so it reacts to very hot and very cold weather by t ightening up. One benef i t of dr y sk in is that i t is less l ikely to develop acne than oi ly sk in, but i t is easi ly chapped in a dr y atmosphere. A lways use mild, alcohol-free make up and toner, and a r ich, creamy cleanser. Moistur ize your face ever y day, including the throat and the sk in around your eyes. When you wear makeup, use a moistur ized foundat ion. You wil l need li t t le or no powder. When you wash your face, use a l iquid or a c leans ing bar. Use warm water to lather and r inse i t wi th cold.

Combination SkinMost of us have this kind of skin, with an oily

center area or a T-zone across the forehead, nose, and chin, and areas of dr yness on the cheeks, and around the eyes and neck. Ideally, you should have one product for the oily areas and one for the dry areas, but this is expensive and unnecessary unless the areas of dr y and oi ly are ver y di f ferent. I t ’s s impler to use a cleanser designed for combination skin. Use a skin cleanser for the central oily panel, diluted with water for the dr ier areas. The dr ier areas may or may not need moistur iz ing f requent ly. You may have to exper iment a bi t.

The excellent health advantages of green tea are not l imited to weight loss. It is the natural compounds in green tea, titled catechins, that provide a plenitude

of other health benefits. Grown men who administer themselves high

doses of polyphenols l ike catechin have 75 percent less probabil i t y of having a st roke. Green tea reduces the amount of bad LDL cholesterol and ra ises good HDL cholesterol count. This br ings for th a more benef ic ia l ba l ance be t ween LDL and HDL p l a sma levels. Addi t ional ly there is conf irmat ion that polyphenol catechins can help thin the blood and lessen blood pressure.

Dna defendersProtect ion f rom cancer is associated wi th

g reen tea d r ink ing, too. Sc ien t i s t s have shown that damage to our DNA is one known determinant of cancer. Our DNA strands come under a t t ack f rom thousands of uns t ab le oxygen molecules ever yday. This is a normal thing for DNA. The amazing news is that our cel ls is able to repair i t sel f.

St i l l, our DNA can cave in to this assai lant and the DNA str ings will become permanent ly damaged. Damaged DNA will produce a mutant code and star t creat ing cancerous cel ls! I t is then great for us that the antioxidants of green tea can head of f and subdue free radicals. This helps reduce our possibi l i t y of fa l l ing v ict im to cancer! Vast amounts of research has also concluded that green tea reduces the r isk of prostate cancer, lung cancer, bowel cancer, skin cancer, kidney cancer, pancreat ic cancer and bladder cancer!

Green tea polyphenols elevate our count of white blood cells. A high white blood cell count is essent ia l to a power ful immune system.

There are two di f ferent white blood cells that polyphenols can st rengthen — B-cells and T-cells. B-cells construct antibodies that defeat foreign objects and infectious microorganisms. T-cells engage par t icular invading organisms such as v iruses and malignant cel ls.

a clean startFor the purpose of detoxi f icat ion the l iver

is our biggest weapon. I t sponges up foreign chemicals from our blood and with the help of

metabolic agents, chemical ly a l ters poisons in to ine r t so lub le mate r ia l s. The ha rmfu l substances can then be excreted to the feces for el iminat ion. With the levels of pol lu t ion in our env ironment and in our food in th is age the l iver exper iences vast levels st ress! On the up-side catechins come to our a id! These the compounds in green tea rea l l y do protect the l iver f rom a number of these harmful substances by a iding the enzymes speci f ic to detoxi f icat ion. In this process the l iver is spared somewhat.

Austral ia, although an island, is also a continent, some 4,500 kilometres (2,700 miles) across and about the same distance from North to South

when you include Tasmania. You should keep these distances in mind

when think ing about dr iv ing in Aust ra l ia. We st rongly suggest that in most cases you f ly between major areas (unless you prefer to t ravel by ra i l and take more t ime) and then hub out from major centres to explore features and environments.

By cover ing the fol lowing three areas, you wil l come to gr ips wi th the essent ia l var iet y of Aust ra l ia and wil l widen the exper ience as you include other areas.

I f you have only 15 – 21 days then you can do the three areas wi thout undue hurr y, We hope this quick tour gives you some food for thought.

area 1Sydney, Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and North New South Wales Coast – Allow 3 to 5 Days

Sydney is a great ci t y in which to spend a few days coming to gr ips wi th the urban Aus t r a l i a n and i s j u s t l y f amous fo r i t s spectacular harbour. The ci t y is t ruly a great place to explore and there is a lot to do.

The histor ical center of the ci t y is the area around Circular Quay, wi th the Opera House on one side and the Harbour Br idge on the other. The Historic Rocks district is beside the Quay and under t he shadow of the Br idge i t sel f...you should a lways cons ider s t ay ing nea r t h i s a rea where possible.

The t ranspor t systems are a l l excel lent and you can access a l l areas of t he c i t y u s i ng t he se. A l ternat ively, take tours or day t r ips to selected a r e a s t o w i d e n t h e exper ience. I f you real ly want to dr i ve bet ween t wo ma j o r Au s t r a l i a n ci t ies, our suggest ion is

to do i t Nor th f rom Sydney, fo l low ing the coast to Br isbane. Another a l ternat ive is to head south to Melbourne, v ia Canberra and the wine country. Be aware that either dr ive is 10 hours non-stop and that you should a l low at least 3 days to do i t at a leisurely pace.

area 2 Tasmania – Allow 5 to 6 Days

I f you are going to explore the Southeast a rea of Aust ra l ia and want to get in to the countryside, then Tasmania is the place to do i t. This is land State of fers ex t remely diverse scener y and the oppor tuni t y to get among rea l Aust ra l ians and see how they actua l ly l ive. Do your ci t y exper iences in the major cent res such as Sydney or Melbourne, but get into the count r yside in Tasmania.

This is one of the best places in Aust ra l ia in which to sel f dr ive and explore on your own and t here a re many exce l len t, sma l l accommodat ions f rom which to choose. I f you do not want to dr ive, you can take day t r ips to the di f ferent areas and features. We highly recommend f ly ing into Hobar t as you enter Tasmania and f ly ing out of Launceston as you leave.

area 3 Melbourne, The Yarra Valley, Great Ocean Road and Ballarat – Allow 3 to 4 Days

Much of the countryside around Melbourne

is ver y s imilar to Tasmania in nature, so we suggest that you concentrate on the areas of real dif ference, the city itself, the Great Ocean Road, Ballarat and the Yarra Valley wine areas.

Melbourne is a great ci t y in which to walk and has wonder ful shopping areas downtown.

It is a ver y European ci t y in nature and has excellent public transpor t ( its Tram – streetcar – system must rank as one of the best in the wor ld) and i t s cosmopol i tan background is ref lected in the many ethnic restaurants and at t ract ions in the ci t y.

I t i s Aus t ra l ia’s t h i rd o ldes t cap i t a l c i t y ( hav ing been set t led f rom Launces ton in Tasmania) and is a very easy city to get around using the public transpor t. An absolute must if you are into unusual restaurants is the Tramcar Restaurant, a st reetcar that ser ves excel lent food and wines while cruising around the ci t y st reets. Bookings are essent ia l.

Meal times are bar none the most important act iv i ty of the day for seniors l iving in retirement and as-sisted l iving communit ies. Eating is

an immensely enjoyable activity when you’re young (as evidenced by our 60% overweight population) and for the elderly, and is often the only enjoyable activity of the day. And while fattening home cooked dishes wil l always be on menus - just watch the uprising if they took away chicken fried steak from anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon line - communities should sti l l be striving for quality and freshness.

Choices, choices, and more choices.

Our seniors spent their whole lives deciding when and what they wanted to eat. Isn’t it only fa ir that they get to do that now? While many communit ies have l imi ted meal t imes - and this is not necessarily bad, it ’s cer tainly bet ter to have an al l day dining program in place. When is the last t ime someone told you that lunch was served at 11AM sharp? Our seniors aren’t children and they’re paying a lot of coin to l ive in these places. Communit ies should at tempt to be as f lex ible as possible in their scheduling to be respect ful of the decis ion-

mak ing abi l i t y of these fo lks, even i f t hey come in at the same t ime. Every. Single. Day.

Social Circles. I t ’s just as impor tant to be able to chose

where to si t. Senior communit ies can be l ike high school wi th folks moving in and out of social circles. Wouldn’t you get sick of si t t ing nex t to the same person ever y day? What i f you didn’t l ike them? Assigned seat ing should be reser ved only for residents wi th ver y high care needs who need ex t ra at tent ion.

Knowledgeable Food & Beverage Director.

All the bet ter if the chef is a nutr it ionist (and in some states i t ’s the law). Even i f no need exists now, he or she should be able to tel l you what they can and can not do in the event diets change for heal th reasons. Diabetes, chewing problems and diver t icul i t is, among many others - are fa i r l y common a i lments among an aging populat ion and something to think about when consider ing a move.

Quality and Quantity. Look to see how ex tensive the menu is.

Res ident s shou ld be g i ven a t leas t t h ree options at every meal, one hear ty, one healthy, and one l ight. Even home st yle dishes should be made with fresh ingredients and a minimum of sal t, and served with f rui ts and vegetables that wil l be pleasing to any palate.

Cleanliness and atmosphere.

Keeping the k i tchen and dining room clean are incredibly impor tant to help prevent the spread of il lness within a more frail populat ion prone to pick ing up ever y l i t t le bug. Check food safet y inspect ions and be sure to walk a l l the way into the dining room (and in the kitchen if they allow it) to make sure staf f looks clean and cr isp, salt and pepper shakers free of any visible debris, table sur faces sanit ized, and glasses and si lverware spot less.

try the food. While ever y communit y cla ims to have the

best around, make sure you ask to t r y i t for yoursel f. Your taste buds don’t l ie and i t wi l l give you a much bet ter idea of what is real ly l ike there as a whole.

In the cul inary chal lenge of preparing the best steak ever, al l the steak restaurants in New York take pains to provide their valued clients and most loyal customers the ultimate

steak experience. This is, in spite of everything, the bloodl ine of al l steak establ ishments in every state. So, for the avid steak lovers in New York, we ask, “What are the makings of the best steak restaurant?”

priceWe do not pay for these pr icey over the

top establ ishments for nothing? We expect only the best! So focusing on the phrase best steak ever, when broken down, wil l y ield to 4 major components. F irst and foremost, is the meat grade. I f you could not ice, ever y decent s teak res t aurant New York should have the phrase USDA Pr ime Aged Beef. To elaborate fur ther in this factor, The USDA’s grading system is the most re l iable tool in determining the qual i t y of your beef. Qual i t y in turn would equate wi th Marbl ing, the fat t y st reaks throughout the muscle f ibers of your beef. And remember, the thickness of the cut is more impor tant than the weight of the beef. 1 to 1 1/2 inch should be the appropr iate thickness. Thin sl ices are more l ikely to dr y out when cooked.

temperatureThe second impor tant factor

is Temperature. Th is is where many of the steak restaurants in New York commit their mistake. Temperature has a lot to do with your beef even before i t hi ts the gr i l l. Explanat ion: i f the beef is colder than your average room tempera t u re, mos t l i ke l y t he f ibers wil l cont ract the moment i t hi ts a hot sur face, causing the meat to harden. So whenever you go to a new steak restaurant for a business lunch, make sure that the chef knows exact ly what he is doing. Remember to go out of your way to compliment the chef for a job well done. He or she wil l appreciate your appreciat ion.

preparationThe third component is method of cooking.

Being a steak fanat ic, you already have your preference when i t comes to how you would l ike this s inful piece of meat prepared. With the advent of booming steak restaurants in New York cater ing on both rowdy par t ies and the more private f ine-dining experience, these establishments also create their large following by the method of cook ing they ’re famous

for. E i ther i t be Pan-seared, sear-roasted, barbecued or gr i l led, would depend mainly on the speci f ic taste of the customer.

entourage And lastly, I am referring to the complimentary

elements that would make your steak dinner the ul t imate ant idote for your beef-or iented appet ite. If New York f ine-dining is your thing, and you wi l l probably expect i t to be ver y cost ly, the steak restaurant of your choice should provide an array of appetizers, carefully prepared side dishes to match the r ichness of your ent rée and a wide select ion of wines to complete altogether a truly unforget table meal.

A person who loves to cook and ex-periment often spend great amount of money for foods and its ingredients. Wel l, i t ’s not real ly bad as long as

you know that the brands of your cooking ingredients are rel iable and known for being the trusted company. There are many brands to mention if we are looking for these prod-ucts, one of them are the gourmet products. This company or idea are known for being the oldest and trusted on sell ing culinary product. They have many products in the stores that are essential to our house. Like foods, drinks etc.

The gourmet has many k inds of products which are made by the i r own people. You

choose f rom their dr inks, seasonings, raw foods, meats and chocolates. They are a lso giving some tips or ideas on how to cook right. They produce some recipes for the mothers or to those who loves to cook. You can see them al l on their own magazines and you can get some other ideas about culinary ar ts. They are not only of fering thing that per tains to food but they a lso cover the whole k i tchen i tems and the stuf f that you need to see there, l ike f lat wares and other necessar y stuf f in cooking. But i f you want to taste tem al l wi thout being t ired and exposing to the f ire, you can go to the nearest gourmet restaurant and t r y a l l their del ic ious menus. This is the best way

to sat isf y the want and to taste great f lavored foods of gourmet for those who are not good in cooking. They have a classy restaurant which is real ly expensive but wor thwhile.

Most ly of t he people who are eat ing or purchasing of their products are those who are r ich or wealthy, but i t is not a mat ter because they can of fer you a good ser v ice. Usual ly they have the place that is cozy and relaxing. The gourmet restaurants are commonly on the places with a great v iew and ambiance which is apt to those class people. But to those who rea l l y want to exper ience the i r foods, you can learn their cooking technique and t r y i t in your own home.

Kids teasing your child about her teeth can not only hur t her feel ings, but can af fect her for the rest of her l i fe. Some teasing can just be kids being kids, but i f you not ice that there actually are problems with your child’s growing teeth and jaw, it ’s t ime to see an or thodontist.

There is a window of oppor tuni t y dur ing a chi ld’s grow th when the correct ion of the jaw size and posi t ion is possible wi th s imple or t hodont ic app l iances. I f t h i s w indow is missed, t reatment la ter w i l l need to focus on camouf lag ing the prob lem rather t han correct ing i t, which can include the removal of teeth, or, in severe cases, jaw surger y.

at what age should your child see an orthodontist?

According to the American Associat ion of Or thodontics, by the t ime your chi ld is 7 years old, her adul t molars a re coming in beh ind the b a b y m o l a r s , a n d t h e incisors are s lowly making their way into her smile.

A t t h i s t i m e , a n or thodont ist can recognize abnormal grow th in the jaw, or problems in the arrangement of the teeth, such as a lack of space.

This is also the age when, i f necessary, the or thodontist can use simple appliances to help create the space needed to accommodate those larger, permanent teeth. In addition, your child wil l be growing a lot in the coming years so removable appliances (other than braces) can be used to modif y the grow th pat tern of your chi ld’s jaw or guide the dent i t ion in a more favorable posi t ion.

How do you know if early treatment is best?

There are two main philosophies of treatment in or thodont ics — “one phase” versus “two phases” of t reatment.

Many or thodont ists bel ieve that i t is more cost ef fect ive to l imi t or thodont ic t reatment to a few years of braces af ter a l l permanent teeth are present. If there is not enough space, ex t ract ion of 2 to 4 teeth are per formed for p roper toot h a l ignment . A l l t rea tment i s therefore completed in one phase.

Others argue that if jaw problems — such as a narrow upper jaw or a shor t lower jaw — are caught ear ly on, ear ly t reatment can ensure no teeth wil l have to be removed, permanent teeth wil l come-in well a l igned, and the jaw can develop proper ly. To get a good sense of your chi ld’s bi te problems grab a penci l and take a closer look at your chi ld’s smile.

Do you need a consultation?

I f you answer YES to any of the quest ions on the check l is t there is a poss ib i l i t y that your chi ld wil l benef i t f rom ear ly intercept ive o r t hodon t ic s, a l so re fe r red to a s “ea r l y t reatment” or phase I t reatment.

Correct ing wi th ear ly t reatment can take two to three years, and not a l l k ids who are t reated ear ly require braces later on. In many cases, i f the second phase is needed, i t wi l l take less t ime to f ix the problem, saving family money and sparing your child a long period in braces dur ing the adolescent years.

Le t ’s summar i ze some of t he benef i t s o f ea r l y o r t hodon t ic t rea tmen t and how this approach can cor rect your chi ld’s bi te problems:

early interceptive orthodontic treatment (phase i treatment)

Growth is used to correct jaw posi t ion and size

Simple removable in t raora l or ex t raora l appl iances are used, such as rapid palata l expander or face mask

Jaw development a l lows permanent teeth to erupt in proper a l ignment

In most cases extractions are not necessaryBraces are not a lways necessar y, in some

cases i t s opt ional for a f inishing touch

What do i do now?

I f you th ink your ch i ld c an bene f i t f rom ea r l y t r e a t m e n t , d o s o m e research and learn more about the or thodont ists in your area. Call or visit their of f ices and ask about their t reatment phi losophies.

I t can a lso be he lpfu l t o s p e a k w i t h o t h e r parents about their chi ld’s e x p e r i e n c e w i t h e a r l y

treatment. Most parents will share information or can refer you to an or thodont ist that wil l help create a smile for your l i t t le one that wil l last a l i fet ime.

What I love most is love, and if you’ve been called “good with children” or “not a barbarian,” I think we can make it! Compared with other toy breeds, I’m probably the easiest going and best behaved. If you promise to take good care of my puffed silk coat, I’ll come over tomorrow in time for brunch!

Unlike lots of other li t t le guys, I need you to cuddle me more than I need you to play games with me. It ’s just my nature. And if you must occasionally leave me alone, I’ll be bet ter behaved than lots of other dogs I could mention! People with rambunctious children or cold draf t y houses need not apply, thank you very much! Confession: I’m already the world’s smallest dog, so don’t t r y to one-down your f r iends by get t ing a real ly teeny Chihuahua. Truth is, he’l l l ikely be snippy and sick ly.

So compared with other small canines, I’m much more quiet and ref ined! Finding the right Music Teacher

If you are incl ined to music and you want to learn it, then you would surely know the importance of having a good teacher. Most people spend a considerable time wondering

how do I f ind a good music teacher. A good teacher can kindle the passion that you have for music and mold you to be a good musician. Many factors have to be considered seriously before you look out for a good music teacher. Whether you are looking for vocal lessons or instrumental lessons, it is never easy to f ind a good teacher.

is she any good? The challenge that you may face very of ten

is that as this is an unregulated f ield, you wil l f ind many music teachers who are immensely talented but who are very good with music. If you are think ing about how do I f ind a good music teacher, then i t is essent ia l for you to make inquires and f ind out through your acquaintances. You should rely on experiences that other people have had and make your decis ion based on their exper iences.

The next impor tant thing is to actually listen to the music teacher per forming. F ind out about any per formances and t r y to at tend them. Th is w i l l he lp you gauge the leve l of involvement that the music teacher has wi th the music. I f you were a lready at the intermediate level of music, then you would be able to see i f the music teacher f i t s wi th your concept of music and i f you wil l be able to learn what you wanted.

Musical tastesBefore select ing anyone, you should a lso

ensure that the idea of music and his or her not ion of music match w i th yours. This is necessary to avoid any clashes in the future. This will also enhance the process of learning because you wil l be able to bet ter relate the teacher. If you and your teacher have the same concept and not ion related to music, then you wil l see that the classes would be much more enjoyable and you will be able to learn quite a lot apar t from the regular lessons. Try to judge the vibes that the teacher gives out dur ing an interact ion t ime and see i f you can relate to

i t and respond to i t. A good rappor t wi th the music teacher a lso is impor tant.

F ind out i f the logist ical factors a lso sui t your convenience, this includes the t imings as well as the cost of the lessons. Many people think that these factors can be adjusted later but i t is necessary that such factors be sor ted out at the ear l iest. I f you are a beginner, a

good teacher is essent ia l to g ive you the correct foundat ion in music and i f you are an advanced learner, then it becomes even more necessar y to f ind a good teacher. We hope that this ar t ic le has helped you understand how to f ind a good music teacher and has lef t you less confused when you think about how do I f ind a good music teacher.

Elegant Entryways

Your wine cellar door is the first part of your wine cellar that people see when they come to visit so make sure your custom wine cellar door

fares well in two departments: Style and Substance. The use of Insulated Glass should help you cover both. Because it is glass, it ’s appealing to the eye and at the same time helps keep your wine cellar door insulated and condensation free.

I ’ l l exp l a i n t he bene f i t s o f u s i ng insu la ted g lass on your cus tom w ine cel lar doors by discussing i t s di f ferent elements. Basical ly, insulated glass is a mult i-paned glass structure that is sealed around the edges and purposely has thin spaces in between. This space is what gives Insulated Glass i t s insulat ing and ant i-condensat ion character is t ics.

In this ar t ic le, I hope you f ind al l the answers you need and learn a few helpful t ips in bui lding your custom wine cel lar door.

glass panes We no rma l l y see tempered g l a s s

used as insulated glass because i t ’s 5 to 10 t imes st ronger than regular glass. Tempered glass is made by superheat ing regular glass until its sof tening point then it is cooled rapidly. One thing I l ike about tempered glass is i t d is integrates into small blunt f ragments instead of pointed shards when i t ’s accidenta l ly shat tered. You won’t really need any kind of coating, like Low-E, because wine cellar doors are usual ly indoors, away f rom sunl ight. So keep i t s imple… and tempered.

Fil l ing The most popula r way of f i l l ing the

space is to use gas bu t not jus t any gas. They’re called thermal per formance ga s se s bec ause o f t he i r l ow hea t conduc t i v i t y ra tes. They a re usua l l y Argon, Kr ypton and Xenon, wi th Argon be ing t he mos t commonly used because of i t s af fordabi l i t y. These gasses are safe, non-tox i c and chemic a l l y i ne r t . I dea l l y, creat ing a vacuum would have been excellent for insu lat ion but i t ’s near ly imposs ib le to

create a per fect vacuum. So I say go for gas, par t icular ly Argon, because it is ef fect ive and the cheapest.

Sealants S e a l a n t s h a v e v e r y l o w m o i s t a i r

permeabil i t y so they are ver y ef fect ive aga ins t condensa t ion. They p rotec t t he gas-f i l l ed space f rom a l l k inds of ex te r na l po l lu t an t s l i ke c lean ing agent s and g la z ing mate r ia l s. Bu t y l and Polysulf ide are the most commonly used pr imar y sealants. Look for ones that use secondar y sea lants because they serve mult iple impor tant funct ions, chief among them is aiding in st ructural st rength.

Spacer The spacer is what’s used to separate

t he g lass panes. One t h ing I not ice about some manufacturers is their use of metal l ic spacers. Metals undermine the abi l i t y of insulated glass to reduce heat t ransfer because metals are good conductors of heat. Opt for ones that use non-metallic materials such as structural foam or f iberglass.

Desiccants Desiccants remove t rapped moisture

w i t h in t he gas-f i l l ed space t h rough absorpt ion. One common example of a desiccant is s i l ica gel.

advantages I n su l a ted G la s s no t on l y a ids i n

insulat ion but i t a lso helps in absorbing vibrations from external forces. Chemical processes in wine causes sediments to form and set t le, a l lowing the wine to age beaut i fu l ly. V ibrat ions s t i r up the sediments ins ide the bot t le and a l ter the development of the wine.

Another advantage of mul t i-paned, insu la ted g lass i s you can a lso use stained glasses on your wine cellar door. Some manufacturers use that space in between for addi t ional decors and wi th var y ing mater ia ls.

DisadvantagesA big setback for insulated glass is

i t s lack of repairabi l i t y. I f those seals break, condensa t ion can fo rm ins ide t he g la s s resul t ing in fogging. You can defog the glass but ult imately, you’ll have to replace the whole glass once this happens.

Are you looking for a diamond engagement r ing and don’t know where to start? What is al l this talk about 4 or 5 c’s, certif ications, RAP, appraisal price vs. actual price and more? Well stay tuned because I am going to give you a rundown of

what to look for and what to ask.

4 C’S, or Do We plead the 5th? The 4c’s of d iamonds a re Cut (Shape), Color (Color ), C la r i t y

( Inclusions), Carat (Weight) and the 5th is Cost ($$$). I wi l l expla in briefly so you will understand and I won’t tor ture you with boring details.

CutWhat is the shape of the stone? Round is most common wi th

Pr incess (aka Square) not too far behind. Cushion and Emerald have become popular because of the celebs. So that ’s the easy one r ight? She can tel l you the shape and you are good. Nope. I t is impor tant to see how a diamond is cut because i f i t is not cut propor t ional ly, than the l ight wil l do into the stone and never come back out. The diamond will look dull and that’s not what you want. You can f ind the Cut, Symmetr y and Pol ish on a cer t i f icat ion. Make sure they are a l l “Good” or bet ter.

ColorColor is easy to f igure out, but sometimes

tough to see. Color less diamonds that are more va luable. The diamond color scale star ts from D (colorless) and goes all the way to Z+ (fancy yel low). For whi te diamonds, t r y to st ick f rom D (the best) to I (fa int yel low) color. I color is not bad. The fa int yel low is tough to see under normal l ight. Once you get into the J to K range, a l ight yel low may be not iceable. K and below aren’t too bad i f you buy a yel low gold set t ing. You wil l see i t more in a whi te gold or plat inum set t ing.

ClarityJust l ike ever y person is not per fect, nei ther are most diamonds.

And there is no need to be. Imper fect ions in a diamond make i t yours. They are l ike a person’s bir thmarks. BUT… just l ike too many bir thmarks can be bad, so can too many inclusion as they wil l prevent l ight f rom going through the stone. Light bounces in and doesn’t come out. And, even more of a problem is that the diamond can get worse like a windshield. The more impact can cause more cracks and may even dul l the stone completely af ter t ime. You don’t want that. Stay wi th a stone that is SI3 or bet ter. Some I1’s are OK but you have to look at the diamond with a loop to get the real picture of i t.

CaratCarat is the weight of the s tone. Size mat ters but not in th is

case. I t ’s a l l about the nex t C to f ind a happy medium. We have had customers come in and not know what s ize looks l ike what. “I want a 2ct.” Af ter they leave happy wi th a beaut i ful 1.50ct, they are ver y happy. See this char t to see how they measure up against what you real ly think.

CostThe crucial C. Everyone thinks that have to spend 10’s of thousands

of dol lars on a r ing. Well, I am going to tel l you that ’s not the case. Ever yone has a budget. Each jeweler should be able to work wi th your budget to make you happy. Some jewelers wil l work wi th you and in the end, you walk out unhappy. Engagement r ings are the star t of a long term relat ionship for us, we want you to walk away happy and proud. And we want ever yone else to see that rock and

want to choose us. We make our customers look good cause when you look good, we look good.

Certif ication What is a cer t i f icat ion? A cer t i f icat ion

assures that you are get t ing what you paid for. I t is an analysis f rom an independent company that looks at the diamond at 60x magni f icat ion to make sure the 4c’s a re documented correct ly. A cer t i f icate and an appraisal are much di f ferent. An appraisal is done by the jeweler so don’t confuse the two. The most popular cer t i f icat ion is GIA

but others l ike EGL USA and IGI are close to being as good. EGL Israel does not accurately document the 4 C’s and have been known to not be as accurate. Check out this cer t i f icate to see how i t looks.

ConclusionNow you know the basics about buying a diamond. I t r ied to make

i t dummy proof and simple so I hope i t worked. People have wr i t ten books and there are courses that are years long so don’t worry knowing too much. Know what quest ions to ask and ask me i f you have any quest ions (my email is cor y@casalejewelr y.com) or just come by.

Knowing a jeweler you can t rust is 3/4 of the bat t le; the other 1/4 is f inding out what she wants and get t ing i t r ight. Check out our websi te l ink to see what r ing sui ts her. We t r ied to cover a l l s t y les wi th deta i ls on each. Good luck.

Properly caring for your hair can result in healthier looking & shinier hair. Simple changes, like soft bristle brushes, never brushing your hair while it is wet and

avoiding hot appliances, in regimen can have dramatic results.

Not everyone is born with beaut iful hair but by learning a few hair care facts, you can make your hair look its best. Healthy, at tract ive hair should shine. Whether your hair is long or shor t, l ight or dark, i t should look smooth, silky and shiny. Hair that is dull, dry, br i t t le or fr izzy is unhealthy and unat tract ive. Everyday events such as shampooing, brushing and blow drying can do great damage to your hair, causing the dr y, br i t t le, f r iz zy appearance.

WashingWhen you shampoo your hair, you should

use a shampoo for your specif ic t ype of hair. I f you have permed or color t reated hair, you should use a shampoo for chemically t reated hair. Many people believe that baby shampoo is ver y gent le and safe to use on their hair. This is a big misconcept ion. Baby shampoo is actual ly qui te harsh: i t s main purpose is to remove cradle cap f rom an infant ’s scalp. Leave the baby shampoo for your baby. If you are not sure what your hair t ype is or what type of shampoo to use, ask your hairdresser. Your hairdresser can recommend a speci f ic shampoo and condi t ioner to keep your hair heal thy and shiny.

BrushingBrushing your hair can actually help improve

the shine. Brushing evenly dist r ibutes the oils f rom the scalp throughout the hair shaf t. I f you have long hair that tends to tangle on the ends, you should star t brushing on the ends to remove any tangles, and work your way up to the scalp. You should never brush wet hair When hair is wet is i t much weaker than when i t is dr y. Wet hair wi l l break ver y easi ly i f i t is not combed very gent ly. If you have long hair, you should squeeze the excess water f rom your hair wi th a towel. Never rub your hair between the towel to dr y i t, this can cause severe breakage. Before combing, a leave-in condi t ioner should be sprayed on the hair to

help restore shine and help remove tangles. Using a wide tooth comb, comb hair f rom the ends and work your way up.

DryingBlow dryers are very convenient and many of

us use them daily. If they are used incorrect ly, they can cause severe heat damage to your hair. Blow dr y ing can cause your ends to be dr y, br i t t le and f r izzy. You should a l low your hair to a ir dr y unt i l i t is about hal f way dr y. Set your blow dr yer on low or medium heat, and keep the blow dr yer about s ix to eight inches away f rom your ha i r. Us ing a b low dr yer set on high heat is ver y damaging. I f you notice stray hairs that are shor ter than the

rest, that tend to look f r izzy or out of place; those are the ef fects of breakage caused by harsh brushing and t reatment of wet hair and blow dr y ing.

I f you fol low these heal thy hair pract ices, you should not ice an improvement in t he condit ion of your hair within two to four weeks, depending on how damaged your hair is. While you are work ing to improve the condi t ion of your hair, there are several hair care products on the market that help improve the shine and decrease the fr izziness. Many of the products work remarkably well. See your hairdresser or v is i t your local beaut y supply store for more informat ion on avai lable products.

Bodily fitness is being able to deal with and handle the daily stresses of l i fe, good physical and mental health, es-pecial ly when maintained by proper

diet, exercise, and habits. Nutrit ion refers to the nurturing of our body, in our ability to keep it healthy and functioning as it is supposed to do. Our abil i ty to provide the body with al l the necessary food, vitamins, and minerals so that we continue to thrive in our daily life processes is a part of overal l f i tness. Fitness refers to the condit ion of good physical, mental, and spiritual health.

What is fitness?Fi tness of the body occurs when a l l the

body processes, phys ica l and menta l a re funct ion ing as the peak leve ls What does i t take to achieve complete body f i tness? I t requires more than simply tak ing a t r ip to the gym, or a walk in the park.

Many fac tors come in to p lay when we consider our body’s f i tness. The dai ly intake of food, v i t amins, and water a re absolu te necessit ies, and most of ten the items thought about. What about the condi t ioning of our body to deal wi th l i fe each day?

Does our physical exercise have anything to do wi th the f i tness of our body? Absolutely. For one condit ion without regard to the other, is not a complete whole. The body includes al l of our physical processes, our mind, and our physical being as a whole. When we give thought to the f i tness of the body, most of ten we contemplate our phys ica l condi t ion as i t app l ies to our ca rd iovascu la r needs and our weight. But our bodies are much more than hear t and a nice

f igure. What about a l l of our other organs? Are they f i t? How do we mainta in a f i tness of the ent iret y? Daily physical exercise that benef i t s the body as a whole, t ak ing t ime to rest and restore what has been depleted f rom our body over the course of the day, and making sure that we adequately supply our ent ire body wi th the nut r i t ion necessar y for heal thy funct ion.

educate yourselfI f we use our resources wisely and educate

our selves about the things our body needs to maintain f i tness, over the course of our l i fe, i t isn’t a di f f icul t thing to at tain. But you cannot abuse your body for years, and then hope for immediate resul ts in t r y ing to at ta in overal l f i tness. I t didn’t become unf i t overnight, and i t won’t become f i t again that quick ly.

Proper at tent ion to the physical needs of each par t of your body resul ts in the f i tness of the whole. Every par t of your physical body exists to work in unison wi th another par t of the body. Two hands are necessary for optimal funct ioning of the l imbs, two feet, two eyes, etc. The physical body is designed to work bet ter than any machine invented to date. I t is more complex and power ful than any piece of equipment we have on the market. I t takes more abuse than believable, and cont inues to operate, even without the dai ly requirements being met, for several days. It is a fascinat ing

machine, as machines go. But i t is an even more fascinat ing subject, when we choose

to care for our bodies as the temples they real ly are. They house our mind and soul, and when the body is f i t, i t

does i t s job t remendously well.

The 2011 season is marching on for the Harbor Lights Theater Company(HLTC) as it begins its preparations to bring The Music Man to the stage, complete

with a variety of exceptional local talent plus Patti Mariano who was in the original production of The Music Man on Broadway with Robert Preston at the young of age 11. She wil l be gracing HLTC with her presence as Mrs. Paroo in this summer’s upcoming production.

The Music Man, by Meredi th Wil lson, wil l be produced f rom July 8 -17, 2011 on the grounds of the beaut iful Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Is land.

Founded in 2010, the Harbor Lights Theater Company’s mission is to il luminate the human expe r i ence t h rough t he h ighes t qua l i t y theat r ica l product ions and ar ts educat ion.

In the last year alone, HLTC has brought over 35 Broadway ar t ists to per form on i ts stages making Broadway af fordable and accessible to the people of Staten Is land, New Jersey, Brook lyn and lower Manhat t an. Founders Tamara Jenk ins, Jay Montgomer y, Be t h Git t leman and Peter Poliakine are pouring their

lives, and years of experience and connections into creat ing a jewel of a theater company.

Ms. Jenkins is an actress, wr i ter, producer and organ izer of spec ia l event s, and has appeared as ‘Ve lma’ in t he F i r s t Nat iona l Broadway Tour of Chicago, or ig inated the role of ‘Coset te’ in Les Miserables, appeared as four fel ines in Cats, and covered the role of ‘E l iza’ in the Richard Chamber la in rev iva l of My Fair Lady. Of f- Broadway she appeared in the recent rev iva l of Jaques Brel Is A l ive and Well at The Zipper Theater. On television, she has appeared in the recurr ing role of ‘Dr. Emory’ on Guiding Light, as a guest star on Convict ion, and on A&E’s Curse of the Hope Diamond with Leonard Nimoy (actually wearing the Hope Diamond).

Jay Montgomery made his Broadway debut as ‘Whizzer’ in the Tony Award-winning musical Falset tos, opposite Mandy Patinkin and Randy Graf f. Mr. Montgomery has twice toured the country with Hear t Str ings, the landmark AIDS benef i t, which ra ised mil l ions for local AIDS char i t ies a l l over Amer ica. The or iginal cast was wr i t ten, d i rec ted, and choreographed by B ick Goss, and fea t u red Chr i s topher Reeve, Sandy Duncan, and Tommy Tune. The repr ise product ion was wr i t ten, directed and choreographed by David H. Bell, and added Oscar winner Lou Gosset t, Jr. and the late Nell Car ter as guest stars.

Twent y e ight loca l ac tors, dancers and chi ldren f rom throughout the borough were se lected by di rector Ray Roder ick for th is production. “I was very excited to see so many interest ing and talented per formers of all ages turn out for our Music Man audit ions in Staten Is land. And did we ment ion, we also have a Nat ional Baton Twir l ing Champion per forming as well?” Roder ick says.

“We a re br ing ing our nat ion’s f ines t to work with our communit y’s best” commented Tamara Jenk ins and Jay Montgomery.
