Highlands in June- “Cool and Eclectic”Highlands, North Carolina will
host the 6th Annual Highlands Motoring Festival on June 6-9, 2013. The event has proven to be an eclectic gathering of vintage and collector automobiles in a judged competition with awards in multiple classes and three days of motoring activities.
Eclectic best describes the field of the entries. Entries have included: S t ree t Rods , Amer i can and European Classics, Muscle Cars, Model A’s, a Land Speed Record car, a running 1960’s original Funny car, and a 40’s era Lake Racer. The festival will begin on Thursday evening with a gathering at the Ugly Dog Pub with live music. There is no cover charge.
Friday will feature the first annual Charity Cruise, a drive highlighting the many mountain waterfalls, views and small towns with a visit to the world famous Wheels of Time Motorcycle and Automobile Museum, in Maggie Valley, to wit-ness some of the most unusual and rare motor vehicles around. Friday evening features a reception party for participants, and open to the public, hosted by The Highlands Literacy Council.
Saturday will be the main event. It will open at 10:00 (Registration to begin at 7:30) at the NEW venue, the Highlands Civic Center, on US 64 North. Trophies, crafted by a local pottery artisan, will be presented to cars designated as Best in Class, and Outstanding in Class. Also presented will be the Best of Show. This year’s featured marquee will be Porsche.
Then on Saturday evening there will be a Bar-B-Q and Bluegrass Gala with the highly-popular re-gional bluegrass band, NitroGrass, featuring two-time national banjo champion, Charles Wood.
Activities continue Sunday with the Third Annual Road Rally. This event begins Sunday morning, with a gimmick rally (not speed judged), with stops at local waterfalls, and a brunch between the legs, finishing at the Ugly Dog Pub, early after-noon, for awards, friendship, and
“war stories”.

made possible the accelerated production of the nuclear material needed for the secret Manhattan Project, at Oak Ridge,Tennessee. U r a n i u m w a s n e e d e d t o complete the atomic bomb, “Little Boy”, which was dropped over Hiroshima, bringing a tragic but quicker end to the war, saving many lives in the end.
We honor this contr ibut ion with the creation of the “Proctor Revival”, an ongoing celebration of the self-reliant, self-sustainable lifestyle of the people of Western North Carolina prior to World War II with strong focus on honoring their great sacrifice to their country. The Proctor Revival Organization seeks to develop a site used to recapture this era depicting this historic time through dramatic interpretation with an ongoing drama which would be ”acted out” on site much like Historic Williamsburg, VA.
The visitor would experience hands on activities with interactive learning opportunities having
to do with history, science and the envi ronment as wel l as participation in drama, music and various other areas of awareness.
A celebration to honor the people of Western North Carolina who gave up their homes, land and way of life so that World War II could be won. Hosted by Fontana Village Resort, The Proctor Revival Organization and GREAT (Graham Revitalization Economic Action Team). Follow the Ben Long Fresco TrailVisitors who follow the Ben
Long Fresco Trail in Western North Carolina will find a touch of renaissance art in such unlikely places as a police station and bank building as well as a civic center, municipal auditorium and a few rural churches. Thanks to the effort of North Carolina native Ben Long IV, this unique trail showcases this unusual form of art to thousands of people who visit the frescoes each year for their religious significance and for their artistic merit. Frescoes are more common to Europe and Long spent many years learning from European masters to bring the craft back to his home. He created the first frescoes for free to assist two rural churches that were in need of attention. Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in West Jefferson is home to one of his most popular and controversial images,
Mary Great with Child. The Ben Long Fresco Trail now features 11 locations across seven counties in Western North Carolina and makes a perfect addition to an art tour along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Taking the stage Friday, June 7, is Carolina Brass. Friday, July 12, jazz ensemble Sweet Dreams will be filling the evening air with soft jazz, moving ballads and funky dance grooves. Since 1984, Sweet Dreams Band has built a reputation that spans the Southeast. They have played a diversity of events and venues and are the players of choice for many recording artists playing live events in the area.

First-t ime director Eli Roth hand-picked l o c a t i o n s f o r t h e f i l m . H e found Priddy’s to be the perfect country store, thanks in part to its light yellow exterior and aged pine floors. Film junkies w i l l r e cogn i ze i t i n s cenes that feature old man Cadwell, the eccentr ic , gray-bearded storekeeper. The 70-something actor, Robert Harris, does not work at the store but is a Triad resident who impressed Roth with his first speaking role.
Cabin Fever revolves around five college friends who spend their vacation in a cabin deep in the woods. When one of them contracts a flesh-eating virus, their vacation takes a definite turn for the worse. The film stars James DeBello, Joey Kern, Jordan Ladd (daughter of Cheryl Ladd), and Cerina Vincent, who attended the East Coast premiere in Greensboro’s Carolina Theatre.

Second Annual Studio Glass Exhibition June 1- July 6, 2013
The Second Annual Western North Carolina Studio Glass
Exhibition is scheduled to start June 1 and run through July 6, 2013. An opening reception for the artists is scheduled for Saturday, June 1 at each participating gallery. The mountains of North Carolina are home to some of the world’s most talented studio glass artists. To recognize the exceptional work of these preeminent artists, an exhibition of work is scheduled in a collaborative event taking place in four downtown Morganton
venues: the Burke Arts Council Gallery, Kalā Gallery, John S. Payne Studio and MESH Gallery. Each gallery is located within 2 blocks of downtown Morganton. Last year, visitors from all across the southeast U.S. traveled to Morganton to view this impressive collection of studio glass.
The exhibition includes glass that is functional and sculptural in design. This includes many unique vessels in varied shapes

A Tale of Two Cities100 years ago two cities, Winston
and Salem officially merged to become one. A century later, Winston-Salem has planned a four-day celebration that recognizes the evolution of one of North Carolina’s most influential cities. “RockyFest”On Saturday, May 25, at Rocky
Face Mountain Recreational Area (Rocky Face Park) to celebrate the park’s one-year anniversary. The day-long event will feature activities for the entire family, including: 10K, 20K, and 50K runs; rock climbing; geocaching; children’s activities; live music; free food; and guided nature hikes.
All races follow the same course on hiking trails around the mountain starting at the park’s picnic shelter, located beside the parking lot in the quarry area.
Free rock climbing sessions will be offered throughout the Day. The sessions will focus on getting participants into the gear (harness, helmet, climbing shoes) and getting them on the rock for a vertical experience.
There are approximately 20 geocaches hidden at Rocky Face Park, offering visitors ample opportunity to explore and find the geocaches. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.
Children’s act ivi t ies include inflatables, face painting, and storytelling with Miss Mel.
In addition, there will be live music and free food. The Sugar Loaf Ramblers will perform from 3:00 to 4:45, and The Idle Time Band will perform from 5:15 to 7:00. Please bring a lawn chair, and sit back and enjoy the music.
