November issueThe weather is gradually cooling, the trees are shedding their leaves

and we now start the run-up to Christmas. However there is still many things going on in November. Arlesey play in their second FA Cup first round draw in two years, Fireworks will be going off all over the village around the first weekend, and the Town Council are being asked to look at stepping down for an election. That’s all in the first week.

Hopefully this month we have covered as many of the events as possible in this issue of on the button. If you have news or information concerning Arlesey and the surrounding area please let us know and we’ll add it in, if possible.

p.s. If you would like to advertise in the next issue please call 834265 or email: [email protected]

We have a number of very kind deliverers, which I would like to thank once again – your help is very much appreciated.

On Saturday 20th October Arlesey Town played away at Didcot Town winning 1-0 in the 4th qualifying round.

Arlesey Methodist Church

Gothic Mede Lower School: OctoberThe first half term has flown by and we are already thinking of those important occasions which we will mark in the second half of term: from the solemnity of Remembrance Sunday to the joy and excitement of Christmas. The children have all settled into their new classes and with the staff have been working hard on new topics.

We are all looking forward to the Christmas Fayre on Saturday 24th November. This is open to all members of the community and we hope that you will be able to join us. It’s a great opportunity to begin, or if you are really organised, complete your Christmas shopping while helping to raise money for the school.

Resident calls for electionAn Arlesey resident has penned an open letter to each Arlesey Town Councillor. Mr Chris Gravett lays out the reasons, in his letter, why he has put forward that the whole council resign ‘en masse’ and make way for an election. His views were made known after going to two recent Town Council meetings and seeing the way the meetings were conducted.

Arlesey Town Council have said: “The Open Letter from a resident will be dealt with under normal council business in due course”.

A n outstanding landmark in the town, is our memorial, and with Remembrance Sunday this month it is maybe a reminder that it is

there to commemorate those who ‘gave their all’ in both world wars. The memorial was constructed after the first world war when it

was decided there should be a memorial to remember the fallen. The information below was extracted from minutes of the Arlesey Parish Council from 1923 and were compiled by ex-councilor Mrs Doreen Rix.

At a Parish Meeting in 1923 parishioners included The Lamplighter, Representatives of the War Memorial Committee, members of the Parish Council and members of the public. The topic of installing a Memorial to the war dead was discussed. Subscriptions for this purpose amounted to £17.12s.6d (seventeen pounds, twelve shillings and sixpence). A plan was submitted which was accepted. The cost less the two bases could amount to £200. The Chase site was chosen, near to the Chestnut tree, the Clerk was instructed to place the order with Mr. Borrowdale. 10.02.23 The Chestnut tree to be felled to make room for the new War Memorial. The sum of £10.00 was donated by W. F. Beart. Messrs. Tidnam offered to provide fencing around the Memorial. 01.05.23 Procession to meet on the bridge at 2.30p.m. To include the War Memorial committee, Ex-servicemen Arlesey Silver Band, Nursing Sister, Women’s Institute, Friendly Society, Cricket Club, Football Club. School children and Ambulance United Choirs to lead the singing. The unveiling is to be performed by Captain Lucas of Shillington. The lesson to be read by Dr. Fuller, and a total of 5 hymns to be included. The Roll of Honour to be read by F. C. Levitt followed by two minutes silence. Dedication to be by Rev. Mayhew. Transfer of the Memorial to the keeping of the Parish Council to then take place by R. C. Lucas. Acceptence of this to be by W. J. Crawley Chairman to the Parish Council. Then a hymn. Reveille and the Last Post.

Roll of HonourThe Roll of Honour for the men who served in the first world war is inscribed on the east and west faces of the memorial, and the men who served in the second world war on the northern face. There is also a plaque in St. Peter’s church with a Roll of Honour.A website dedicated to those who fell in both world wars can be viewed at:www.roll-of-honour.com/Bedfordshire/ArleseyRollofHonour.html

The choice of name for this path which meanders along the River Hiz is based on history going back to the days of King Offa of Mercia who

founded a religious settlement in Hitchin. When the Danes invaded the rivers from the North Sea it is recorded that some built a fort on the confluences of the River Ivel and the River Hiz. A ‘Danegeld’ was paid to the invaders so that they would not invade the nearby settlement of the Hicca Tribe who lived in Hitchin.

The path follows the route the Hicca tribe would have more or less followed from Hitchin to the Danish Fort near the south east corner of Henlow.

The footpath which opened on the 22nd of July 2012 was the culmination of many years work by local volunteers. It runs from the north of Arlesey down the western side of the town on through Ickleford, Hitchin and finishes in Charlton village. The walk is mainly through open country with some sections along urban footpaths.

Henlow Bridge Lakes is the start or end of the Hicca Way depending which way you are walking. From there walk across the river by the station and enter the entrance of Glebe Meadows nature reserve.

Passing through you will come to the Old Moat nature reserve. You actually cross the Old Moat to get to the Mill Pits and is worth taking note of the wildlife. The whole area is listed as of County Wildlife importance.

Heading further south brings you to the end of Mill Lane, Arlesey. Continuing south you encounter Arlesey Common (awarded under the Inclosure Act 1804).

Crossing the River Hiz at the Common takes you on the route via Ramerwick farm towards Ickleford. Heading eastwards, take you to the Ickleford Commons. Yes, in the plural as Ickleford has a plethora of Commons with names such as Whitsun and Christmas Common. Following the route through the commons you come out near Lower Green Farm Equestrian Centre.

Turn left and head to the railway bridge and after crossing the river walk up by the side of the cottages on the opposite side of the road. This joins the Icknield Way near Gerry’s Hole, a small nature reserve. Cross back over the river and following the Icknield Way also takes you back to the village centre. Around the green are a couple of pubs a shop and St Katherine’s Church.

Follow the temporary route, by Bowman’s Mill, to enter the outskirts of Hitchin. Turn left into The Mead into Bury Mead Road and at the end bear right across the road into the Ransoms Recreation ground. The little stream is still the river Hiz. Walk up the hill in the park and leave by the park gates in Nightingale Road. Bearing left brings you to Hitchin Station where you can catch a train ride home to Arlesey, or you carry on through Hitchin and onto Charlton village following the route in two directions; either through the town centre to cross Priory way via subway and along the Charlton Road or you can walk along Queen Street, Park Street and cross Priory Way via footbridge by The Three Moorhens pub. The two routes then collide again in Charlton and onto Wellhead – the source of the Hiz.

Leaflets on the route are available from ACORN. Telephone: Mr Roger Watson on 01462 731963.

An easy-going bike ride up through Fairfield Park, the gentle warmth of the autumn sun, dappled through the trees, on my face as I make my way, unflustered, to join the other 1134 runners in my first race...hang on...that’s not right...that must be a dream. Well, the reality was somewhat different when I drew back the curtains at 6:50am on Sunday 7th October I was met with fog. First fog of the season – I hadn’t reckoned with that; no lights, you see. The thing is, I haven’t done a run-only race before but I have done two triathlons and my best running has always been just after I’ve got off my bike. I suppose it gives my legs a warm-up and the adjustment in muscle use from bike to run is easier to cope with than starting to run from nothing.

So bike it had to be, regardless of the no-lights-in-the-fog issue and it might help me acclimatise to the temperature. I had my coffee and porridge, packed my rucksack (running shoes – check, warm après-race clothes – check, grit and determination – check) and set off. The entrants of this year’s Standalone 10k were being ushered into parking and I was soon among a happy throng of athletes.

It was a year ago that I had decided to enter the race, after seeing last years’ runners go past at the roundabout and was struck by the wide range of people and abilities taking part.

So there I was, freezing cold and illogically nervous, ready to give it a go. I soon met up with several people I know. It was all very friendly and well-organised by North Herts Road Runners (cue Looney Tunes sound effect...) but this was their 25th shot at it so that was hardly surprising. The Letchworth Tri-Sports marquee was doing good business and I was heartily hailed by its occupants.

I’m number 64! We were called to the start line and I made my way towards the rear section of runners – the hour or so bunch. It’s a tough course with a hill at the start and then a few more to follow so I was expecting to break the hour but only just. My best time in training was about 58 minutes but that was way back in the spring, so I wasn’t sure I would

better that, but I was hoping that the sense of occasion would combine with the fact that I had actually stuck to a semi-organised training plan for the previous 6 weeks, which might even pay off!

The race was fantastic and I didn’t think I would enjoy it so much. Apart from a short stretch after coming off the A507, I didn’t feel in much distress in my legs, lungs or digestive system (always anxious about ‘doing a Paula Radcliffe’). It’s a very buoyant feeling, running with a large crowd, and it resulted in me beating my previous best time by over three and half minutes!

So afterwards, the trackkie bottoms are on, the bananas are eaten and the results for TEAM ARLESEY are in. I have been able to track down 12 runners from Arlesey and their results are shown below in order of finish.

The age-grade percentage is a way to compare everyone on a levelish playing field, taking into account age, sex and general infirmity! The 100% aspirational person is a unisex Mo Farah and we’re all compared to that.

Congratulations to everyone who took part. Every runner is at a different level of experience and so has their own story of personal achievement to tell but maybe, if we all try to catch up with Alastair Ford when we see him pounding our Arleseyan pavements, we might all be a little faster next year!Position Name Sex Category Time Age-grade79th Alastair Ford M Vet 40-49 00:40:01 69.52%329th Eddie Thorn M Vet 40-49 00:46:43 59.81%475th Patrick Lohan M Vet 40-49 00:50:24 56.08%571st Boris Peck M Senior 00:51:47 54.35%572nd Ian Evans M Vet 50-59 00:51:56 58.79%701st Isla Dennis F Vet 35-44 00:54:32 57.56%746th Louise Liversidge F Vet 35-44 00:55:38 55.29%849th Adam Elgood M Senior 00:58:26 45.38%866th Jennifer Thorn F Vet 35-44 00:58:17 51.80%922nd John Horner M Senior 01:00:06 43.80%1043rd Vicky Maria F Senior 01:06:05 44.20%1106th Karen McCann F Senior 01:10:02 41.66%
