SENI MONT’ KIARA: THE ART OF FINE LIVING

Much of art, like a richly concocted life, requires a perfectionist eye for excellence which is honed over the years. This dedication to fine living has birthed the avant garde residential development SENI Mont’ Kiara.

Decorate its exquisite interiors by way of our designer Lai Voon Poh’s insights into installations and sculpture.

With the opening of Mont’ Kiara’s first residential art gallery Art Salon@SENI, Citi-ZENs can now purchase expertly selected art pieces to transform their living spaces into sanctuaries of refinement and unparalleled comfort.

Journey towards the finer tastes in life at the table of 7atenine, an epicurean newcomer to Kuala Lumpur’s dining scene. And above all, continue to Live Life Large in this city of infinite surprises!

A masterpiece of fine living comes home to SENI Mont’ Kiara

An exquisite centrepoint where stylish resort ambience, culinaryendeavour, art appreciation and stellar design principles meet. This best describes the uniqueness and understated grandeurof SENI Mont’ Kiara at Mont’ Kiara. Deploying the elements ofwater and tropical foliage to clever effect, esteemed landscapedesigner Karl Princic has created a calming embrace of a resort-styled environment.

SENI Mont’ Kiara: Residential island concept intersects art, technology and affluent living

Citi-ZENs who are eager for a piece of this much-coveted residential nirvana, will be wowed by the sheer number and diversity of resort facilities, as well as the unrivalled quality finishes that SENI has to offer.

The entire residential property resembles that of an island, encompassing a central courtyard that serves as a communal axis and central gathering space for the community. Activities like Tai-Chi, yoga, jacuzzi and pool-side languor take centrestage amidst the visually stunning garden landscaping. All of which can be viewed from each one of SENI’s freehold homes.

Transcending mere luxe, SENI evokes the entire spectrum of one’s senses with its host of uber lifestyle comforts. An on-site restaurant and a myriad of exciting activity centres complete the paradise-on-your-doorstep experience. With generous built-up dimensions ranging

02

from 2,347sqft to 3,541 sqft, each of SENI’s elegant units is guaranteed utmost privacy with its own private lif t lobby.

Bask in the balmy winds at the recreational deck, or retreat to your private idyll for some opulent views of the scintillating Kuala Lumpur skyline. Located at the highest point of the Mont’ Kiara hills, residents of SENI’s higher floors will be feted with an unimpeded panorama of one of Asia’s fastest developing metropolises.

SENI Mont’Kiara is ringed by a series of roads and highways, including the North Klang Valley Expressway, Sprint Highway and the Duta- Ulu Klang Expressway (under construction). Residents will have easy access to the Kuala Lumpur city centre, Petaling Jaya, Bangsar, Damansara Heights, Damansara Utama and Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

This well-conceived homage to Art and the art of fine living further raises the bar on Mont’ Kiara’s immaculate collection of exclusive residences. Surpass your expectations with us by visiting the SENI Gallery on the web at www.senimk.com.my or call 603 62031919 for an appointment.

Trip The Light Fantastic

and appropriate such ideas into the context of the interior in more ways than one.

International hotelier Ian Schrager’s St. Martin’s Lane Hotel in London is one such fine example. Designed by Philippe Starck, it reinvents the basic function of lighting. Each individual room allows the occupant to alter the light ambience to suit their mood via a dial (offering gradually shifting spectrum of vibrant colours). This one-of-a kind interactive light installation enables each guest to take possession of the space and engage with it as well as the city in which it inhabits. By night, the rooms emanate a kaleidoscope of icy blues, rich violets, shady greens etc. visible from the streets through its floor to ceiling windows.

For a lesser intervention, limit this effect to a single large feature wall with clever concealed lighting. Rather than painting the feature wall in your home as is common practice, one can either use fluorescent light (with coloured sleeves) or for a more sophisticated effect, LED lighting. With the advent of LED lighting, it is now possible to mix various colours for a myriad of effects.

One advantage using light to ‘paint’ a wall over using actual emulsion paint is that you essentially have a versatile blank wall as a canvas you could change whenever you desire just by changing the light fixtures.

relationship into the third dimension, giving the viewer opportunities to engage with the Art on various other levels.

American artists Dan Flavin and James Turrell clearly understand the concept of art as experiential and sensorial.

Dan Flavin sealed his name in 20th Century Art history by creating sculptures and installations from everyday fluorescent light fixtures. His electric art elevated the banal fluorescent to a reverent status exploring colour, light and sculptural space in various saturated hues and tones, often occupying site specific locations of gallery interiors, corridors and corners.

James Turrell challenges our architectural perception of light and space via light tunnels, projections and settings that enclose the viewer to produce illusory shapes that seem to have mass, volume and weight although they are created with only light. His work ranges from the small scale to the truly monumental; his most ambitious to date is transforming a volcanic crater into a gargantuan naked eye observatory in Arizona.

Of course, owning a piece by Turrell or Flavin remains the sanctity of serious private art collectors and institutions but we can reference

Wandering through the monumental spaces of the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Tate Modern in London and the MOMA in New York, one quickly realizes and appreciates the importance of Art. Not only does Art presents us with beauty and grace, it also defines, mirrors and shapes our times, our cultures and our humanity.

i-ZEN has always fostered a close affinity with Art and recognizes its power to enrich our soul and mind, as reflected in our latest high luxury development SENI Mont’ Kiara.

However, Art does not have to exist only within the confines of museums and galleries but also right within our homes, something which our well-travelled and discerning Citi-ZENs will agree.

Art manifests itself in many different forms and representations. What we are perhaps most familiar with is the medium of painting but there is also the aesthetic of sculptures, the assemblage of installations, the new age of multimedia and so forth.

We may know our Vermeer from our Van Eyck, Dali from Picasso and Warhol from Lichtenstein. But how about Art becoming an integrated and active part of our home? How about the notion of living our Art?

Paintings essentially engage us on a two dimensional plane and hence can be restricted by it. As the viewer, our relationship to it exists on one level only: through its viewing plane. Sculptures and installations attempt to extend this

Aesthetic appeal aside, it is widely acknowledged that coloured light has therapeutic properties closely associated to our psyche and can stimulate different mental moods. For instance, yellow is optimistic and upbeat while purple has a psychological effect of being mysterious and calming, alluding to dream states and fantasy. Purple recedes visually so it is an excellent choice for backgrounds.

The name Alexander Calder might not be familiar to many but we have at some point come into contact with his art; either walking past his monumental bolted sheet steel sculptures gracing public plazas in cities around the world or playing with his probably most famous invention: the hanging mobile. He posited the question ‘Why must art be static? The next step is sculpture in motion.’ Along with his contemporaries: the

“Light is a powerful substance. We have a primal connection to it. But, for something so powerful, situations for its felt presence are fragile. I like to work with it so that you feel it physically, so you feel the presence of light inhabiting a space.” - James Turrell

great Marcel Duchamp, Russian Constructivist Rodchenko and Pop artist Robert Rauschenberg, they push for a new type of sculptural language that engages kinetic movement as a key component of their work, often requiring the spectator to interact with it. The creative act is thus not only performed by the artist alone.

Twisting and bending wires, Calder’s delicate wind driven mobiles essentially ‘drew’ three dimensional figures in space which move and change with time, unfolding complex, infinitely fascinating kinetic sequences.

Contrary to one’s thinking, a hanging mobile does not necessarily mean traditional or outdated. The key is taking such timeless ideas and reinventing them to become something new. If your living room has high ceilings, a dramatic gravity

defying sculpture spanning across its ceiling would definitely be a talking point from fawning visitors. Taking it a step further, the idea can be transformed into a hybrid ‘chandelier’ mobile by incorporating lighting into it. As it hangs above your dining table, the functional and contemporary focal object reflects and directs light, casting wonderful and magical shadows across the room.

Some people see Art as something beautiful that is merely to be looked at, some see Art as an investment exchanging hands for up to millions of dollars, others are apathetic whether there is Art or not.

What Flavin, Turrell and Calder have shown us along with many other great 20th Century artists is that the human mind is creative and innovative. Good Art is not only pleasing to the eye but should also be meaningful. Great Art is when it challenges us to think out of the box. So the next time we look for a piece of Art for our well appointed homes, why not try looking for something more than just a statue you place on your mantelpiece or another photographic print you just hang on your wall. As artist Raymond Loewy (Father of American Industrial Design) puts it, ‘YOU MUST CREATE’.

Please contact 603-62036688 or email [email protected] for any enquiries or to set up an appointment for his interior consultation.

Q: Growing interest in art has fuelled the expansion of the art scene in Malaysia, what were the early years like when you started the Art Salon at Bangsar Baru?

SW: The 90’s were an exciting period for Malaysian art and artists. Malaysia was enjoying a period of strong economic performance and that helped the art scene tremendously. Art Salon was established in 1992 and we were soon hosting our first solo exhibition by Tajuddin Ismail, followed by Ismail Latiff in 1993. When we opened our doors at Bangsar Baru, we were the only art gallery in that area!

Q: What inspires you in promoting awareness and understanding in art appreciation? Is there an underlying personal philosophy that guides you in the running of an art gallery?

SW: Paintings need a suitable venue to show so that collectors can come by to view. We want to

make sure that our artists are fairly treated. We were the first gallery to produce an art catalogue with every exhibition, hence our list of artists grew quickly.

I have always been aware of art since my secondary school days. In 1967 or 1968, I visited the Samat art gallery in Jalan Ampang, where Khoo Sui Hoe was having his solo exhibition. His paintings moved me very much but I could only afford to his catalogue for a dollar. Twenty years later when we met at the gallery, he signed my copy of the catalogue.

Q: What do you see as your contribution in enriching Malaysia’s contemporary art scene?

SW: We appreciate being able to play a role in connecting artists with collectors. Today the number of artists who paint full time has increased tremendously. The number of galleries has also tripled, indicating that the art market can be fairly sizeable.

Q: Art has been defined as a vehicle for the communication of emotions and ideas. What is your self-expression through the artwork that you collect?

SW: Art is intuitive. The pieces that we like personally are usually the ones that get sold. We prefer strong bold abstract works and figurative paintings.

Q: Which other artists featured by Art Salon might be of interest to the i-ZEN owner?

SW: We have lined up an interesting group of artists for our 2007 - 2008 exhibition schedule. Outstanding watercolourist Jansen Chow is the third artist to be shown at Art Salon@SENI, followed by the husband and wife painters from Penang, Yeong Seak Ling and Yuen Chee Ling. Visit www.senimk.com.my for more details.

Q: Do you have any advise on what to look out for when buying art for investment reasons?

SW: Do not buy art as an investment. Buy only if you like the work and would be comfortable to display it on your walls. It would be useful of course to gain some knowledge on Malaysian art so you are a knowledgeable purchaser.

Q: The housing of an art gallery in SENI Mont’ Kiara is a commendable initiative towards boosting art appreciation. How did it spark off?

SW: I was introduced to Mr. Chan Say Yeong of CapitaLand and Mr. Lai Voon Hon of Ireka Development Management by artist Jolly Koh. After our first meeting, I visited their show units and was pleasantly surprised to see so many works of fine art hanging on the walls. They demonstrated that there was a great opportunity to use art in a tasteful way to decorate their homes. “Not just bricks and mortar,” said Mr Lai.

Q: How do you interpret the relationship between art and fine living?

SW: Fine art definitely enriches our lives. Fine living takes on a new dimension when fine art is present.

Art Salon@SENI is located within the SENI Gallery at Mont’ Kiara. The gallery is opened daily from 10am to 6pm. For further enquiries please contact Spencer Wing at 012 287 1662 or email [email protected]

The elegant 200-seater concept dining haven captivates the imagination with its innovative use of glass, water and other intriguing elements, a fearless disregard for convention - and a wily grasp of climatic whims that make the city exude heat and chill in equal measure.

A two-metre high wall of glass surrounds the central island bar on the ground level, giving revelers an unhindered view of the beckoning bright lights and seductive urban mayhem of the city. Sink yourself into bleached white sofas on the sundeck, as air curtains and atmospheric lighting subtly work their magic in weaning the edge off a hard day’s grind. An ice bar, resembling a giant block of melting coolness, and luscious dark timberwood flooring conjure a beguiling contrast of visually cool and warm design elements while underlying a hospitable Asian sensibility.

Begin your descent into gastronomical decadence at the casual Street Level bar with a platter of signature Sumptuous Seven nibbles. A round of gourmet pizzas and tasting platters, rendered complete with expertly mixed cocktails engages the palate as a prelude to tempting treats at the mezzanine level. Ensconced in utmost privacy and classic design accents, the Mezzanine is home to cleverly concocted dishes like the Mesquite Smoked Chilean Seabass and a fusion-inspired plat de resistance of prime beef koay teow with macademia nuts. The appetite-arresting dessert repertoire of warm Pear and Almond Tart with Almond Ice-Cream, Flourless Chocolate Cake and Baked Chocolate Fondant puts the final strokes on this unrelenting assault on all one’s senses. All enveloping drama

Bukit Kiara Park: Giant Belt Boasts “Design With Nature” Theme

A cavernous swathe of lush greenness will soon permeate the peaceful environs of Mont’ Kiara, with a 188.93ha public park set to turn the area into a natural habitat the size of 300 football fields. Citi-ZENS will soon be able to jog, play basketball, get on their fitness cycles and have sun-drenched picnics – all in the convenience of within close proxmimity to Mont’ Kiara neighbourhood. Bordered by the landmark sites of Taman Lembah Kiara, the KL Golf and Country Club, the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club and Sri Hartamas, the ecological idyll is the city’s long-standing answer to London’s Hyde Park and New York’s fabled Central Park.

Nature seekers and sports-inclined Mont’ Kiara residents can now abandon the plastic fantastic vices of the city for a rejuvenating spell in the park’s winsome serenity. Public efforts to bring a more sustainable ecological climate to the city would lead to part of the park being used for research and development projects, study tours of the herbarium and even mini hill climbing expeditions.

Untamed ancient rainforests, glittering coral reefs and impenetrable wildlife sanctuaries have made it a magnet for nature enthusiasts and budding anthropologists, eager to encounter at first hand its wealth of indigenous cultures.

The ecological treasure trove is now tipped to propel itself to the forefront of the leisure and services sector, with plans to house a glamorous stable of a new boutique hotel, retail malls and

Sabah: Malaysia’s Eco Wonderland Gets Her Urban Groove On

Fortuitously blessed with an abundance of cultural and ecological riches, Sabah has long basked in travel mythology as one of the world’s hidden natural sanctums.

A prestigious residential development located in Luyang, Kota Kinabalu, Luyang Perdana is the first gated and guarded estate of its kind in Sabah and consists of 315 units of terrace houses, semi-detached units, town villas and shop offices.

Built on rehabilitated land that previously housed six disused oxidation ponds, the area has flourished into one of Sabah’s most sought after residential gems. Lush tropical landscaping, 24-hour security patrol and sound ergonomic design are the mainstays of this exciting new concept in community living.

In Luyang Perdana, security and communal safety are of topmost concern. Sited within perimeter fencing, the development’s garden concept encourages open living, while the wide selection of built-up areas and property types ensures compatibility with the needs of large families and young executives.

The sleek lines and well-defined contours of the property lend a contemporary façade to all homes; complemented by an open garden and a slate of pedestrian and child-friendly play areas. Shop offices and sublime recreational facilities like a swimming pool, children’s playground, community centre and BBQ area provide well-earned relaxation time for busy executives and corporate decision-makers.

a budding business district within the Sandakan harbour area. Set along the prime real estate strip of Jalan Pryer, phase two of this transformation aims at providing premium office infrastructure for professionals working in and out of Sabah. Aseana Properties Limited’s RM450 million joint venture with its partners, has added 25% more of reclaimed land to the bustling Sandakan business district. The new entertainment and retail hub – boasting the prolific Esplanade waterfront and central market - completed under phase one - would persuade young trendsetters to explore the greater riches Sabah now has to offer.

Setting the bar for iconic projects like Sandakan Harbour Square comes as second nature to Ireka, which ventured into the budding Sabah real estate market with its maiden project, Luyang Perdana.

Aseana Properties Limited Spreads Its Wings To Vietnam

With investment in Vietnam slated to comprise 70% of its total net asset value, ASPL has set its sights on building and managing a glitzy portfolio of high-end residences, Grade A offices, upscale retail malls and five-star hotels in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Danang. Vietnam’s favourable investment milieu, accelerating economic growth rate within the affluent sector - second in Asia only to China – and rapidly diminishing bureaucratic mechanisms, all bode well for the high achieving property group.

With three major property projects designed to commence construction by early next year, Ireka is set to replicate its success in Malaysia abroad. Stark shortages in sophisticated living and working spaces in the two major Vietnamese cities have sent property prices soaring, making timing crucial in the conquest of new opportunities for ASPL’s growth.

The much-discussed venture in Vietnam also scores potential opportunities for i-ZEN owners looking for the right residential or commercial space to accomodate their hectic, cross-cultural lifestyles. These new spate of lifestyle abodes will be molded within the contours of the stellar Ireka brand; giving its champions more of the finer touches that Citi-ZENs have grown accustomed to.

Hot on the heels of its recent coup of a Main Market listing on the London Stock Exchange, Aseana Properties Limited (ASPL) and its exclusive development manager Ireka Development Management Sdn Bhd, better known as the impresarios behind i-ZEN, have announced plans to lend their expertise in Vietnam.

(From left) Ireka’s Executive Director, Mr. Lai Voon Hon and Group Managing Director, Mr. Lai Siew Wah with His Excellency Nguyen Tan Dung, the Prime Minister of Vietnam. Over a 20-minute meeting, they touched on the progress of Aseana Properties Limited’s projects in Vietnam, as well as general discussion on the contribution of Malaysian companies on the economic growth of Vietnam.
