From the Principal's Pen: As I sit down to pen a few words, I am reminded of a few verses from the poem, ‘The Fruits of Labour’ by Anonymous,

A shoot, a bud, a flower, a tree And soon comes fruit for you and me

And once again we laugh and sing And thank our land for everything.

And as time passed an orchard grew Where children played and dreams came true

Fruit and love for everyone My homeland's filled with joy and song

The seed that you helped St. John’s sow has now grown up into a tree. And soon, they will start bearing fruits on their own. The Chairman of the CMS Board of Governors, Dr. Dan Seevaratnam laid the foundation stone for the Technology block on 22.06.2014. On Sunday, 5th July 2015, about one year and two weeks later, the first four-storey Technological Faculty at school level in the island was dedicated to the glory of god and the spread of knowledge by the Rt.Revd. Dhiloraj Ranjit Canagasabey, Bishop of Colombo, and declared open by the Ven.S.J.Jeyaveerasingan, Archdeacon of Jaffna & Manager of the College. By embarking on this gigantic Rs.60 million worth educational project, and by opening the new building, we have opened up several avenues for students to travel in pursuit of higher education. The first batch of students is going to sit for their exam in a few days’ time. It is expected that many will enter the university and read for a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) degree. The University Grants Commission has pledged admissions for 3,000 students from this new stream. This course of study will lead the children to several Diploma, Degree and Vocational programmes and certificates. Students who fail to score sufficient marks to enter the universities can enter the ‘University Colleges.’ Following the opening of the building, there was a grand exhibition spanning one week with many Exhibits ( on Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Automobile Engineering, Bio Technology, IT & IT Hardware, Stamps, Art and Media & Photography), Educational Stalls, Environmental and Social Awareness Programmes, Sale, Daily Quizzes and New Inventions!! The Chief Guests and Special Guests who graced the Opening Ceremony had one thing to say in common – that they envied the students of St. John’s College. Thanks to you, students who are talented and interested in technology now have a future. Thanks to you that people who might remain unemployed are going to get jobs. Thanks to you, the level of unemployment in the North is going to decrease. I would like to thank all the teachers, non-tutorial staff, students, parents, old boys and well-wishers who helped in little ways and big to put up this building with units for Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Bio Systems Technology and Electrical. I thank Engineer Mr.A.Rajamohan (building constructions) and his group (Pera Engineering) for their excellent work in completing this building ahead of the schedule. My thanks are also due to Engineer S. Sundarakumar and Engineer N.Kugathasan, old boy, for volunteering as consultants and for monitoring and supervising the construction. As already stated, 30m for Buildings & 30m for Machinery and Equipment was not an easy amount to raise. We are in debt. We are in need of more helping hands. Old Boys' Associations, old boys’ batches, small groups of old boys, families, individuals and well-wishers, please rise to the occasion and contribute. When you invest in St. John’s, you invest in Jaffna, you invest in our children, you invest for a brighter tomorrow. St. John's in return will do the little it can - erect a plaque in appreciation of your selfless deed. "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime." Rev. N.J.Gnanaponrajah Principal
