SPECIFIC FOR YOUR SUCCESS Welcome to the first edition of LANTALK, a new occasional publication from Lallemand Animal Nutrition. Some of you may not know who Lallemand are. We are the global leaders in the production of yeast and bacteria for a vast range of industries. If you have ever eaten bread, drunk beer or celebrated with a glass of champagne, you have almost certainly benefited from Lallemand’s skills and expertise. We are a major player in animal nutrition as well, working with farmers globally for over 30 years. For the last 20 years we have owned the market-leading Biotal range of crop and condition specific forage inoculants. We are a leading supplier of rumen specific yeasts either through the feed trade or via our innovative range of value added yeast farm packs. Our products are also widely used in the pig and poultry sectors, helping producers drive efficiency gains. Our goal is to give farmers access to new research and innovative products to help them increase the efficiency, performance and welfare of their livestock and the sustainability of their systems. At the heart of our business is robust science and the development of proven products which deliver outstanding results for our customers. We know the challenges farmers face are changing and the products they need must evolve too. When we bought Biotal we purchased the rights to L.buchneri 40788, the most widely proven and effective strain of bacteria for making quality silage. It would have been easy to leave it there but we wanted to do more, to help farmers produce silage which was more aerobically stable, to reduce waste and give increased flexibility over clamp opening. After an R & D programme lasting 10 years, we are launching the first totally new bacteria approved for use in forage inoculants for over 20 years. L. hilgardii I-4785 complements L.buchneri, and together they significantly reduce waste and heating, keeping silages cool and more nutritious from clamps that can be opened safely just 15 days after ensiling. To allow more rapid continued development of our inoculants, we are changing the name of all our forage inoculants worldwide to MAGNIVA. The name may be new but it builds on the heritage and success of Biotal and you will still be able to rely on the first class technical support you are used too. At Lallemand Animal Nutrition we can see a bright future and hope you will share in it with us. From July 1st, the widely regarded and proven Biotal range of crop and condition specific forage inoculants is evolving into the exciting MAGNIVA range which builds on Biotal’s success to bring even better results on farm. Lientjie du Plooy from Lallemand Animal Nutrition explains.Biotal inoculants have played a huge role in helping farmers produce more from forage. Our crop and condition specific inoculants, based on L buchneri 40788, enabled farmers to move away from making wet silage preserved with acids to higher dry matter feeds which would promote improved intakes. Clamps would also remain more stable once opened, a big requirement with drier silages and crops like maize.

The introduction of specially selected enzymes to our already effective range improved digestibility. By also increasing access of sugars they promoted more effective fermentation. Now we are ready for the next improvement.

The MAGNIVA Platinum range continues Lallemand’s ground-breaking role in developing inoculants to help farmers meet the challenges they face. The incorporation of a brand new patented bacterial strain working is synergy with L. buchneri will give greater flexibility over when clamps can be opened safely, and ensure more silage to feed by greatly increasing aerobic stability to reduce waste.

Ten years in the makingIdentifying a new strain of bacteria with potential, carrying out the research to prove how well it works and going through all the registration stages allowing the launch of a new forage inoculant is a big task.

It has taken over 10 years from initial isolation to launching our patented new strain L. hilgardii I-4785. But the wait has been worthwhile. It is the first totally new bacteria to be introduced to the forage inoculant market for over 20 years and it really brings something new and unique.

The research shows that it makes L. buchneri, already the gold standard for aerobic stability, even better because together they work in synergy to produce more stable silages and clamps that have been scientifically proven to be safe to open sooner.

How do they work?Aerobic spoilage, both physical waste and heated silage is a result of the activity of yeast and moulds. They are present on all silage but remain largely inactive until they are exposed to oxygen. Once active, they rapidly spoil silage.

The bacterial strains in MAGNIVA inoculants quickly produce a number of antifungal compounds during the fermentation which significantly reduce the populations of both yeasts and moulds so reducing the threat. L. hilgardii works faster than L. buchneri and by complementing each other they improve early aerobic stability.

More flexible opening of clampsSome years, farmers will want or need to open clamps soon after ensiling. This is often especially the case with maize and wholecrop. But everyone knows what happens if you open a clamp too soon. The levels of aerobic spoilage can rocket, leading to less silage to feed, reduced feed value and lower palatability.

MAGNIVA Platinum inoculants have been proven in extensive trials to achieve high levels of aerobic stability sooner than other inoculants or untreated crops.

In UK trials with grass silage, the aerobic stability of silages made with a MAGNIVA inoculant and with no inoculant were compared. The clamps were opened after just 15 days. The standard measure of aerobic stability is that silage should remain less than 2°C above ambient temperature. Once it is warmer than this it is unstable.

The untreated silage was unstable in around three days. The MAGNIVA treated silage was still stable nearly nine days after opening which is a huge benefit, meaning clamps could be opened and fed safely just 15 days after ensiling.

Aerobically stable for longerAs well as allowing more flexible opening, MAGNIVA’s powerful bacterial combination improves long term aerobic stability. The populations of yeast and moulds were significantly lower 100 days after silage was made, helping protect the feed from heating, meaning feed values and palatability will be maintained.

The graph below compares the rate of heating of wholecrop in clamps opened 130 days after ensiling. The MAGNIVA treated silage showed no sign of heating, even eight days after the clamp was opened, while the untreated silage heated up significantly quicker and to a far greater extent.

All heat is wasted energy leading to lower feed values and higher purchased feed bills. The stability of MAGNIVA treated silage was also better than silage treated with L. buchneri alone, demonstrating how these bacteria work better together.

Better together The unique and specific bacterial strains in MAGNIVA Platinum forage inoculants have different attributes but work better together, delivering exceptional results. Reflecting the variety of crops grown and the often variable conditions in the UK and Ireland, the new range continues to include crop and condition specific inoculants and contains other bacteria and enzymes as required to allow you to continue to take control of forage quality.

LAN TALK

THE MAGNIVA PLATINUM RANGEThere are five inoculants in the MAGNIVA Platinum range, which each formulated to help produce a more stable, higher quality feed.

the inoculant formulated for high dry matter grass silage, typically 31-45%DM. Also perfect for lucerne and clover silages. Fibre digestibility and rate of fermentation are improved by the inclusion of carefully selected enzymes.

the perfect inoculant for wetter grass below 30%DM and difficult ensiling conditions. The inclusion of homofermentative bacteria ensures the rapid initial fermentation which is so important with lower dry matter crops while L. buchneri and L. hilgardii deliver outstanding stability and more flexible opening options.

targeted at crops from 30-45%DM, it is specially formulated to deliver high quality and stable fermented wholecrop, whether for straight cereals or bi-crops.

with aerobic stability a major concern in maize clamps, especially when fed over the summer, the combination of L. buchneri and L. hilgardii delivers exceptional stability whether clamps are open quickly or kept closed for several months.

when maize harvesting conditions are challenging or if crop dry matter content is lower, the combination of homofermentative bacteria drives the rapid fermentation needed while L.buchneri and L.hilgardii keep the silage cool.

It’s a mistake to dimiss the problem of heat stress as a foreign one, just because our climate is not seen as hot according to Mark McFarland Feed Ingredient Product Manager with Lallemand Animal Nutrition.Heat stress is a serious issue for dairy and beef cattle during the summer. It can have a significant financial impact, being linked to both milk and growth rate reductions. It can also have longer-term impacts on health and fertility as it is a reason for high oxidative stress.

But heat stress is about more than temperature. It is a combination of heat and humidity that causes many problems.

This is demonstrated in the graph. Each combination of temperature and humidity equates to a level of thermal stress in dairy cows. The yellow zone is the area when the stress threshold is reached and cow performance will begin to suffer. Orange is moderate stress, red is moderate to severe stress while if the purple zone is reached cows will be severely stressed.

For large parts of the UK and Ireland it only takes a temperature of 22-23°C in summer to exceed the heat stress threshold in dairy cows. Perhaps it would be better if we referred to the problem as thermal stress or heat and humidity stress? A simple hygrometer (pictured) will allow you to monitor the temperature humidtiy Index (THI) and will help you take pro-active action that limits any impact on production and animal health.
