cover story continuedEssendon Fields began as a joint venture involving two of Melbourne’s most highly regarded property development companies; Linfox and Beck Corp. Combining their notable histories of experience and expertise, Essendon Fields is now among Melbourne’s largest property developments integrating commercial real estate with retail in Melbourne’s North West.

The 305 hectare mixed use development started with the Direct Factory Outlet (DFO) & Homemaker Hub Precinct, a 65,000 sqm retail project in the south western corner of the site. This initial vision has expanded substantially through the incorporation of other developments, including more than 100,000 sqm of commercial, retail and office space on site.

Recognising the importance of communication and the strengths in working together and uniting the business and residential communities, Essendon Fields engaged MagMedia, a publishing house home to several Melbourne based publications, most notably 3008 Docklands Magazine which was recently nominated for a Business 3000 award and has assisted in effectively promoting the Docklands precinct.

Dee Johns, Marketing Manager for Essendon Fields has been instrumental in getting this initiative off the ground and together with Sarah

Rossato of MagMedia, the ladies have worked tirelessly to see this first edition come to fruition. Combining the talents and knowhow of Susan Riley, William Rowe and Lisa Quittner as Editor, along with a great team of writers and the support and backing of Essendon Fields Management we look forward to delivering a top class newspaper for your reading enjoyment.

Essendon Fields News is a quarterly publication that will coincide with the start of each new season. In this, our first spring issue, we bring you business profiles to provide a greater understanding of the types of businesses located here and the people behind them. We also have included an informative article on the history of Essendon Airport, the first in a series written by Roger Meyer of the Civil Aviation Historical Society Inc. as well as stories, interviews, social pages and events both local and Melbourne wide.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Editor with any comments, suggestions or contributions – this is your newspaper, become part of its success. Following on page 2 you will find a complete listing of the Essendon Fields Business Community.

When the deep dark days of winter become too much to bear, I find it helpful to remember that it means Spring is almost upon us. And you know what that means, Spring Racing Carnival.

With the major racedays approaching and only weeks until Moonee Valley and Flemington Racecourses are flooded with the racing faithful for the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup Carnival, smart racegoers will already be scouting for the perfect raceday outfit. Shedding the winter layers provides a great excuse to purchase a few precious pieces to celebrate the warmer weather.

European Spring/Summer 10 and Autumn/Winter 10/11 runways were something of a relief and more

than a little bit of a revelation. A huge shift away from the predominantly black colour palette, the flash of the heavily embellished power shoulder and the unforgiving mini dress has made way for a return to femininity. Nostalgia gave way and fashion editors all over the world fawned over the pastel colour palette, the floral prints, the soft, fluid fabrics and (at long last) the worship of the female figure. This bodes well for the Spring Racing Season, as it is the place where class and tradition can be combined perfectly with fashion to create a timeless look for a day at the track.

Cinematic inspiration is also a contributing factor to this return to polish, with acclaimed television series Madmen, Carey Mulligan’s Oscar Nominated role in An Education and Tom Ford’s directorial debut A Single Man all reliving the sartorial glory of the 60s. Nowhere are these styles more at home than amongst the cut and polish of the racegoing population of Australia, during one of the most important periods of Melbourne fashion (oh, and racing) of the year.

As is always the case with fashion trends, everything old is new again and vintage inspired looks were paraded down the runway even more than usual in the last few seasons. Most exciting perhaps, is waists making a welcome reappearance, thanks in large part to model Lara Stone at Louis Vuitton. The beautiful 60s inspired looks popping up here and there are an absolute delight, and I’m not talking barelegged shift dresses, the likes of which a barelegged Jean Shrimpton brought to our attention to the disgust of many, more than a few races seasons ago...

But it isn’t only the 60s that are popping up on the fashion radar. It seemed that runway looks inspired by retro sentiment dominated key trends this season. And this means ladies (and gentlemen) have their pick of colours, styles and silhouettes to choose from this spring.

By knowing what suits your shape you can nail a historically inspired look. Valentino and Chanel

showed classic 30s and 40s film siren silks and lace in tonals and neutrals. Or look to Louis Vuitton and Prada for 50s and 60s inspiration in full skirts and blouses and a hint of mod. Chloe and Dries Van Noten are great reference points for 70s refined glamour with classic tailoring and fluid fabrics. With options abound, this season the fashion forward will be looking back for inspiration.

But the best part about all of this is that this season, instead of spending a fortune on the latest and greatest in your high end boutique or department store, you may be just as likely to unearth the perfect races outfit for a fraction of the price at your friendly neighbourhood recycled clothing store. That’s right, not only are these styles friendly on the figure, with a bit of patience and an eye for quality they can also be friendly on the bank balance.

Vintage boutiques are a great place to look for well made, beautifully tailored pre loved dresses, hats and bags. Look closely at the cut and the shape and ensure they don’t look dated to avoid looking like you’re off to a dress up party. By pairing your vintage pieces with simple, modern makeup and shoes, you’ll be on a winner. A slick of liquid eyeliner or a red lip can give a polished revamp to any outfit. Team it with a neat updo or cascading movie star waves and you’ll definitely look the part.

Gentlemen - this doesn’t mean that you’re getting off lightly. A renewed appreciation for the art of dressing well (read: suiting up in your most dapper ensemble), means that the bar has been raised. Take note from Tom Ford’s hero played by Colin Firth in all his sartorial glory, or take your cue from Don Draper and the rest of the team from Madmen’s Stirling Cooper. A well cut suit, pocket square and a slick ‘do will have a huge impact on your reputation as a man of impressive standing, both with the fash pack, and with the ladies. Unfortunately though, your manner of dress has no bearing whatsoever on your success on the punt. Just so you know...

With the ever-increasing pace of modern life, the idea of doing nothing at all for even just 30 minutes might seem like an over-indulgence and waste of valuable time. But with over 1000 regular clients returning for their treatments and services, the team at Skin Scentual have shown that taking time for yourself can be a valuable investment.

Business owner Katrina Wilson opened her first store, an Ella Bache Beauty Salon, in July 1988 at Gladstone Park Shopping Centre. Since then, Katrina has developed and successfully grown the business, which continues to attract satisfied clientele in greater numbers to this day.

In November of 2009, Katrina moved the business into a beautiful contemporary salon in Essendon Fields, a tranquil space that ensures continued client satisfaction. A harmonious sanctuary where stress release and personal indulgence are the order of the day, the team at Skin Scentual pride themselves on their ability to provide a blissful experience. Style icon Ruby Rose and Melbourne model Lucy McIntosh were recently announced as the ambassador and face of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW).

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the country’s leading consumer fashion event was as much about exploring Melbourne’s urban culture and artistic nature, as it was about fashion.

“MSFW is a significant fashion event and an integral part of Melbourne’s culture and this year we are lucky to have two funky and sophisticated Melbourne girls fronting the event,” the Lord Mayor said.

“MSFW is about accessible fashion, where you can see it, try it and buy it. On the catwalk and in city spaces you will see models of all shapes and sizes and all styles of fashion and we are proud to boast that 70 per cent of the designers showcased

at this year’s event are Melbourne based. “This year Melbourne Spring Fashion Week will

be action packed with more free events, with more local designers, more style and more event partners than ever before.

Matthews Steer Chartered Accountants combines CBD accountancy expertise with North West business values. As a

long-established suburban practice, it has grown with the evolving needs of its market, to guide and nurture the business

success and personal wealth of its clientele.

With a team of highly skilled accountants and financial planners, Matthews Steer provides a comprehensive package

of strategic and business planning, tax, business development, systems solutions, finance sourcing and wealth

creation services.

In our efforts to serve our clients, we have a core principle that guides everything we do: “Never advise a client to do

something we wouldn’t do ourselves.” It is this principle that explains the list of long-serving clients who would never place

their trust in anyone else and is the glue that moulds together the Matthews Steer family of 35 staff, clients and values.

Matthews Steer may not be the accountancy practice you expect, but we might be the accountancy practice that you need.

Matthews Steer Chartered Accountants… stories in numbers

With an emotional commitment to business and personal finance, for 20 years Matthews Steer Chartered Accountants has been helping clients negotiate the financial minefield by telling ‘stories with the numbers’. A good relationship is built on trust, and Matthews Steer see their role as one of Trusted Advisor, ensuring that all proffered financial advice is consistent with what they themselves would invite into their own lives and businesses.

Under the guidance of Geoff Steer, head of Financial Planning; and Ken Matthews, head of Accounting; all professional activity at Matthews Steer serves four business mantras: Peace of Mind; Confidence to Grow; Banker Confidence; Cash to Wealth.

The demystification of complex numbers is also key to Matthews Steer continued success. Accountants can often be poor communicators, acting simply as record keepers who provide raw data without analysis. The team at Matthews Steer aim to be proactive in making sense of numbers, using them to identify important issues and implement strategies.

A case in point is the ‘Catalyst Process’, in which a business is presented with a financial X-ray — a one-page analysis that provides a financial snapshot and highlights key areas marked for improvement. With strategic planning and advice, Matthews Steer has helped transform small local businesses into leaders in their industry.

Matthews Steer offers more than tax planning advice. After taking on the role of Trusted Advisor

during the development of a small optometry business, Matthews Steer provided honest advice and referred the business to specialists as required. The business is now at the forefront of the industry with over 65 stores.

During the global financial crisis, Matthews Steer devoted much time to assisting a manufacturing client with understanding his costs. In so doing, a successful renegotiation with the banks led to a moratorium on repayments, and as a result, saved 50 jobs.

A documented career path, commitment to training and development, and a balanced professional environment ensures that staff at Matthews Steer enjoy coming to work each day. Team members are actively involved in representing the firm. The success of Matthews Steer is a personal success for all staff.

In an industry with an average staff turnover of 25%, Matthews Steer is unique in that it seldom sees team members leave for other public practice firms. Instead, they leave to venture into industry, or to set up their own businesses — a testament to the mentorship and confidence instilled by Matthews Steer.

The simple approach applies to Matthews Steer HQ at Essendon Fields House, too. You’ll not find prestige furniture and expensive leather-bound tomes in their offices, as clients are not expected to pay for such professional luxuries. Matthews Steer want businesses in Melbourne’s north-west to experience the first-class standard associated with many CBD firms, without the inconvenience of travel, a place where clients can expect CBD quality at north-west prices.

Brian (Bri) and Sheila are a young married couple. They care for their daughter, nicknamed ‘Joe Egg’, and are the model of courage in adversity. Bri is a natural born entertainer, but what lies beneath Bri’s funny lounge room antics? Compelling, heartfelt, an exuberant witty comedy.

Recently the 2010 Victorian of the Year was announced along with other awards for outstanding public and community services, during the Victoria Day Council Awards ceremony at the Melbourne Town Hall.

At the formal awards ceremony Stephanie Alexander was presented the Victorian of the Year Award by the Acting Lord Mayor, Susan Riley.

Stephanie Alexander is one of our country’s most renowned and acclaimed chefs, a restaurateur, food writer and author who has excelled in her dedication and pursuit of excellence promoting Australia’s Hospitality and Tourism industries. She has always championed local good food producers both in Australia and internationally on her menus, in published articles and in her numerous books.

Stephanie is the author of twelve books, along with a six part ABC television series in 1999 to accompany her book “A Shared Table’. Her bestselling book ‘The Cook’s Companion” initially

published in 1996 and expanded in 2004 has sold in excess of 500,000 copies, becoming a ‘kitchen bible’ for everyone from children to young adults, especially those who become independent and leave home and have to learn how to cook for themselves and utilise fresh food in their daily lives.

Further expanding her belief in children learning about food, Stephanie developed a comprehensive gardening and cooking program in 2001 at the Collingwood College in inner city Melbourne. This innovative project has since seen hundreds of primary school children from grades three to six assisting in developing and maintaining an extensive vegetable garden at their school.

Based on organics principles, the garden provides an opportunity for children to participate in this form of gardening, understand seasonality and follow the ‘paddock to plate’ philosophy by harvesting the bountiful produce to prepare a wide array of culinary delights which they share. These positive experiences provide a sound basis that will stand them in good stead in later life in the way they think about eating habits.

Following the success of the Collingwood College’s Program, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation was set up in 2004 to raise funds for the implementation of Kitchen Garden Program in other schools. Today there are currently 139 schools across Australia participating in the programme with this not for profit organisation dedicated to spreading the word, by teaching children in a pleasurable way, about growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing food.

The selection of the award recipients was made by the Trustees of the Victorian Day Council after carefully deliberation of many worthy nominations, all of whom have made significant and valuable contributions to the Victorian community. The Trustees of the Victoria Day Council is made up of previous Victorian of the Year Award recipients.

Victoria Day 2010 marks the 159th anniversary of the official separation of Victoria from New South Wales and the formal proclamation as an independent State by Governor La Trobe.

Moonee Valley Council is leading the way in Melbourne’s sustainability stakes, taking out World Environment Day honours for its Green Precinct Project.

The project has seen local businesses and not-for-profit groups joining forces, adopting a proactive approach to sustainability. In just under 2 years since its inception, the project has seen impressive results in the local Moonee Valley area.

Focused on minimising greenhouse gas emissions, water and transport use and waste, while encouraging biodiversity, the initiative is actively educating the corporate population and the children of Moonee Valley, leaving a great legacy, not to mention some very positive early statistics. A 22 percent reduction in greenhouse gases and more than 60 percent rate of recycling of all recyclable material in participating organisations show that awareness and willingness to make a positive impact can have real results.

The project confirms the power of the collective is critical in the adoption of innovative approaches to sustainability. But it is the council’s willingness to lead by example that has set the ball rolling. By using existing resources wisely, and by providing access to renewable energy sources and adopting best practise standards to waste disposal Moonee Valley City Council is

minimising the environmental impact of businesses and families in the area. The Council is also encouraging all locals to adopt these approaches into their everyday life, making awareness of environmental issues an ongoing focus.

Moonee Valley City Council is committed to providing local businesses with the information they need to conduct their business more sustainably, working in conjunction with Design Victoria to integrate intelligent environmental solutions to gain a competitive advantage. Their understanding of the opportunity for businesses to grow their profitability, while minimising their carbon footprint is raising eyebrows, but for all the right reasons. And other councils are catching on.

The Council is also actively encouraging biodiversity in residential areas with its sustainable gardens program. Encouraging locals to grow fruit and vegetables, and provide a habitat for local flora and fauna, the program also provides the tools for gardening enthusiasts to conduct a sustainability audit in their own backyard, minimising water use and the use of fertilisers and pesticides.

Moonee Valley City Council was also nominated for a Keep Australia Beautiful Award, confirming the council’s reputation as an environmental leader and setting an example for other local councils, locally and internationally.

This is the first of a series of articles on the history of Essendon Airport, which was Melbourne’s airport for fifty years. It is also the oldest capital city airport in Australia. Part one explores the early aircraft landing grounds around Melbourne, and explains why a site at North Essendon was chosen.

In the early post-World War I days of civil aviation, aerodrome services for landing and departing aircraft, and for their maintenance and repair were in private hands.

There were four private aerodromes operating around Melbourne in 1919, 1920 and early 1921. They were located at Glen Huntly, Glenroy, Port Melbourne and Fisherman’s Bend. Later, in 1927 another was established at Coode Island, just west of the city.

In early 1921, the newly formed Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of Defence was given responsibility for the provision of Commonwealth aerodromes and landing grounds. The purpose of providing a Government aerodrome in Melbourne was to encourage all flying operations to be concentrated at the one location.

Initially it was proposed to use an area of 93 acres (27 ha) at the Port Melbourne Rifle Range, but it transpired that this land was reserved for future Melbourne Harbour Trust development. Other sites investigated included Albion, Broadmeadows, Glenroy and Essendon.

In terms of access by public transport, good drainage of the land and possible obstructions (trees, power lines, etc), the recommended site

was “St John’s” at North Essendon. This rural farming area was named after Mr G.F.B. St John, who purchased land in the area in 1843.

The purchase of the land from farmer Mr G.J. Taylor was proclaimed in the Commonwealth Gazette of 11 August 1921.

The site was bounded by boxthorn hedges and post-and-rail fences. There was no electricity, running water, telephone or toilet facilities.

Once the site had been surveyed by the Department of Works and Railways for building sites and roadways, the first building to be erected was a timber hangar. This was moved from the Glen Huntly aerodrome, and re-assembled at ‘ The Government Aerodrome at North Essendon’, as it soon became known.

It was leased to Mr J.H. Larkin who is recorded as overhauling aircraft engines there in December 1921. He soon requested a sealed floor to keep dust and grit out of the engines.

The aerodrome was an ‘all-over’ field, which meant that there were no sealed runways, and aircraft landed and took-off according to the prevailing wind direction.

Air Navigation Regulations of 1921 required minimum landing (and take-off) distances of 320 metres in all directions, but the Essendon site provided distances of over 700 metres which meant that it had considerable scope for expansion.

On 8 August 1923 the site officially became “Essendon Aerodrome”.

SAM: Despite years in radio, the public knows you best for your work on television, how does a live studio audience compare with an on-air audience, do you find radio talk back more difficult to gauge audience response?

Radio is a far more intimate medium – it is more personal and less stressful than live TV. But whichever one is on, it is the chemistry between the combatants which is important.

STEVE: Returning back to Melbourne breakfast radio after 8 years on Sydney’s

2UE breakfast show, and I believe being one of only very few presenters to have enjoyed success in both cities, what are the most defining differences between Melbourne and Sydney listeners?

The big difference between audiences is that Melbourne listeners seem more engaged with current affairs. Sydney is such a hard place to survive in that people are very much wrapped up in their own lives.

SAM: Have you worked with Steve before and how do you find greeting the day with Steve, is it a labour of love?

Steve reminds me of myself – he is so different. The secret is not to prepare anything we speak about before we go on air – I think.

STEVE: Working with a media personality like Sam Newman, who is renowned for airing his opinion in no uncertain terms, do you find working with Sam exciting or anxiety producing, how grateful are you for the 7 second delay?

Sam and I have worked together for a long time. I was more worried when I was working with him and Rex Hunt together, I think Sam has mellowed a bit and I think he is genuinely interested in talking

about social issues. The dump button gives me 10 seconds not 7!

SAM & STEVE: As high profile personalities with high profile and varied careers, how do you maintain your ability to connect with ‘real people’ - the listeners?

STEVE: Unlike Sam I still do ordinary things, I pick up my dog droppings in the park, catch trams and trains around the city and watch footy from the outer with a pie and talk to all sorts of people every day. Sam’s only real contact with real people is probably Street Talk.

SAM: The mundane things in life are for the mundane. Life is too short to drift too deeply into someone else’s space and attitudes – be yourself, which is probably the greatest problem I have had over the years.

SAM: What has surprised you most about working with Steve that you didn’t expect?

How excited he gets over trivial things. The expectation of speaking to a politician on air, live, consumes him to the point where his forehead starts to blow.

STEVE: What would readers be most surprised to learn about Sam that is contrary to his public persona?

He is a very generous and thoughtful man who I suspect would like his persona to be more about his intelligence than his antics on the Footy Show.

SAM & STEVE: September is footy finals fever in Melbourne, who do you think will be holding the premiership flag on September 25th, and which team should we look out for in the 2011 AFL season?

STEVE: Geelong will win again and watch out for the young Tigers in 2011.

SAM: An obvious answer but either one of the top four sides. Injury and suspension play a huge and deciding factor in the fate of those top four. Keep your eye on Melbourne in 2011

SAM & STEVE: If you could change or commend 3 things about Melbourne, whether culturally, socially or politically, what would they be?

STEVE: 1.The weather. 2. The ocean temperature. 3. Build a new airport - the old one is a disgrace.

SAM: 1 - A larger and more effective lawful hit squad (ie. Police) to deal with anti-social behavior.

2 - Less of an obsession to be anal and just generally knobbling people for existing.

3-And the pernicious and insulting industry that has become speeding fines.

The surest sign of Australia’s economic recovery is likely to be not interest rates or election results, but the success of Melbourne Leisurefest at Sandown Racecourse from 30 September to 3 October. The three industry associations which run Melbourne Leisurefest, representing the caravan, boating and automotive industries in Victoria, have all seen strong recovery.

Melbourne Leisurefest chairman Ashley Farr said people wanted to enjoy their hard-earned leisure time and had the money to pay for it.

“In addition to the legions of grey nomads, families are enjoying activities which bring all the family together for healthy recreation, meeting friends and enjoying Australia’s great outdoors. Leisurefest caters to all these interests, with the latest in vehicles, vans, camping equipment and accessories, plus all you need to know about the best destinations and the best facilities on offer.”

Back by popular demand are both on-road and off-road vehicle tests at the expansive Sandown venue and this year there will also be hands-on lessons in reversing vans and trailers. There will also be test towing for caravans and boats down the Sandown main straight, test rides in campers and motor homes, and four-wheel-drive demonstration rides on Sandown’s off-road circuit, all with expert drivers at the wheel to keep it safe.

They might be the current world champions, but the Australian Netball Diamonds are training harder than ever. With the Commonwealth Games fast approaching, test matches are heating up and the girls are getting ready to take home the Gold. Captain Sharelle McMahon talks training, team bonding and beating the Silver Ferns…

How are you feeling in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games?

Really good actually! It’s always a nice feeling to come to the end of a championship season. We’ve got three matches against Jamaica and three matches against New Zealand coming up in the Test series, and now we’ve got a really great team of 15 to play in those games. So we’ve put all of our rivalries aside to come together as a team, and everyone is really excited about getting out there in the Test, and later on in the Commonwealth Games.

What’s the training schedule like?

Basically, the two series are our preparation for the Games. Sometimes we have a chance to head into camp in the lead up to that, but we’ve got really reduced preparation time this season. So we pretty much train every day. The team stays together at a hotel and we’ll train two or three times a day- but occasionally they’ll give us the afternoon off, which is nice.

How do you stay motivated when the training gets so intense?

Motivation is no problem at all. There is competition within our group, not only for positions on the team but also on court, so that’s a motivating factor all the way along. And if you can’t get yourself motivated to play in the Commonwealth Games, then you’ve probably got bigger problems!

As Captain, do you feel that there’s any extra pressure on you?

There is some extra responsibility that goes along with it. As Captain, people will turn to you, both on and off the court, but more than pressure it’s just a bit of added responsibility to the team, and to the sport.

Is there much focus on building team culture? I imagine trust and loyalty would be pretty important…

It’s incredibly important. We all come together from different teams and different states, so it’s important that we build up that trust with one another. We do a lot of work to make sure we really know each other, so we have that sort of support, which does make the performance easier.

It’s also about how you enjoy the time you spend with the team. We do spend a lot of time together. We room together, we basically eat every meal together, and we train a couple of times a day together, so it is really important that we get along.

We hear a lot about some rivalry with the New Zealand Silver Ferns. How much of that is real?

There’s definitely a huge rivalry with the Silver Ferns! I’ve played in three World Championships and three Commonwealth Games so far, and each time, we’ve played against the Silver Ferns. The rivalry is always there, and it continues whether it’s a major tournament or not. In the competition we have, there’s never very much separating the two teams, and we’re both probably doing everything we possibly can to beat each other.

What are you looking forward to most about the Commonwealth Games?

There are so many things! The experience of being at the Commonwealth Games is one that you don’t get anywhere else. In other competitions, you’re just representing the Australian Netball Team. But at the Commonwealth Games, you’re part of a much bigger team, so that’s really exciting.

Having so much support from the other athletes and getting to know all of them is really amazing as well. So apart from obviously the competition and trying to win the gold medals, sharing the experience with the other athletes, and going along to their events and supporting them, is probably what I’m looking forward to most.

What are your hopes for the team for the next few years?

It’s a big couple of years coming up. There’s the Commonwealth Games, obviously, and then the World Championships halfway through 2011. So our goal, as it always is, is to win both of those major tournaments, and those are really quite realistic goals for us to have I think.

We’ve got a really great team together that has a nice mix of experienced players who have been in major tournaments before, and also some really great younger players who are fairly new to the team. So for us, it’s about pulling that together and achieving as best as we can over the next few years.
