Investorssometimesmaygetfrustrated with their investments becausethoseinvestmentsdon’tseemto produce quick results. And perhaps that’sunderstandableinourfast-pacedsociety,inwhichwe’vegrownaccustomed to instant gratification. But investing is, by nature, a long-

And as an investor, you can learn a few things from marathoners, suchas:•Preparation — No one gets up one day and is ready to run a marathon. Marathon runners train for months, and even years. As an investor, you, too, needtoprepareyourselfforthe“longrun.”How?By learning as much as you can about different asset classes, types of risk and all the other factors associated with investing.•Patience — Marathoners know they have a long haul in front of them, so they typically create a “game plan” — one that takes into account such factors as their physical condition, the weather on race day, and the characteristics of the course, such aswhetherit’shillyorflat.Investorsshouldalsocreate a strategy — one that encompasses their goals and ways of working toward them — and stick to this strategy.•Perseverance — Marathoners may deal with injuries, dehydration and other setbacks, either while training or during the actual race. But as longasthey’reabletokeepgoing, theydoso.Asaninvestor, you, too, will face obstacles, such as market downturns. But as long as you continue investing anddon’theadtothe“sidelines,”youhaveagoodchance of making progress toward your goals.•Vision--Marathonersstudythecoursethey’reon,sotheyknowwhat’sahead—andwherethey’regoing. As an investor, you also need a vision of what lies in front of you — the number of years until your retirement, the type of retirement lifestyle you anticipate, what sort of legacy you plan to leave, and so on. Your vision will help drive your investment decisions. •Proper coaching — Not all marathoners have individual coaches, but many have at least gone to clinics or joined running clubs so they could learn more about the various aspects of this grueling event. And an investor, you can certainly benefit from guidance or “coaching” in the form of a financial professional — someone who knows your individual needs, goals and risk tolerance and who hastheexperiencetomakerecommendationsthatare appropriate for your situation. Everymarathonerisfamiliarwiththedifficultiesof the challenge and the satisfaction of finishing the race. As an investor, you also will be tested many times.Furthermore,you’llneverreallycrossthe“finishline”becauseyou’llalwayshavegoalstowardwhichyou’llbeworking.Yet,byemulatingthetraits of successful marathoners, you can continue working toward your objectives — and perhaps you’llavoidtheblisters, too.

And since the playwright, Neal Simon, was said to take particular pride in basing his stories on real-life events, the part where the sports writer is always right would seem plausible always.

Are Organic Foods Really Better?

Many consumers are confused about the nutritional quality of organics versus conventionally grown foods. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently weighed in on the importance of organic food for children, setting off a firestorm.TheAAPreleasedareportinOctoberstatingthat:“Currentevidencedoesnotsupportanymeaningful nutritional benefits or deficits from eating organic compared with conventionally grown foods, and there are no well-powered human studies that directly demonstrate health benefits or disease protection as a result of consuming an organic diet.”Itappearsthattheconfusioninthemindsofmanyconsumersaboutthenutritionalbenefitsoforganics is linked to the use, or lack thereof, of pesticides. Conventional food producers argue that pesticide residue is reduced substantially by routine and safe food handling practices such as washing, peeling and cooking, and that there is no significant difference in the nutritional quality of organic and conventionally grown foods.Thelowerpesticidelevelsinorganicfoodsdonotimpactthefoods’nutritionallevels.Incontrast,higherpesticidelevelsinconventionalfoodsdonotimpactnutritionallevelseither.Evenso,theamount of man-made pesticide residues found in conventional foods is still well below the level thattheEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyhasdeemedunsafe.Therealissueiswhetherthesesmall doses, multiplied over years and decades, might eventually add up to an increased health risk.Dr.MehmetOz,aheartsurgeonandtelevisionhost,wroteaboutthesubjectinarecentTimemagazinearticleentitled“WhattoEatNow,TheAnti-Food-SnobDiet.”Dr.Ozstatedthat“nutritionallyspeaking,thereislittledifferencebetweenthefarmer’smarketbountyandthehumblebrick(offrozenfood)fromthefreezercase.It’strueformanyothersupermarketfoods,too.”Advances in the frozen-food industry -- from packaging to techniques like high-pressure flash-freezing and freezing peeled, blanched and steamed foods -- has improved the quality of frozen produce and products, and improved the retention of their vitamin content. Some food manufacturers freeze and package the harvested produce immediately and on-site, thereby increasing both quality and preservation of nutrients.Inastudypublishedinthe“JournaloftheScienceofFoodandAgriculture”in2007,Universityof California-Davis researchers reviewed the variable nutrient content of fresh, frozen and canned vegetables and fruits. Frozen spinach goes through a flash-freezing process that preserves it within hours after it leaves the soil, so it retains more of its vitamin C content than fresh spinach. Both forms of spinach (fresh and frozen) retain their high vitamin A content as well. The nutritional superiority of organic versus conventionally produced meats is another misconception. Researchers have found that there is not much difference in nutrient quality between grass-feed or cage-free animals and animals that are raised in feedlots or cages. The quality and nutrient levels in modern canned vegetables and fruits and conventionally raised animals have improved over time and are a good choice for consumers. Best of all, conventional foods are far lower in price than organic products, making them affordable for most shoppers. Goodfoodisavailableforconsumersofalleconomic levels. Shop smart and try both organic and conventional canned and frozen products. ThisrecipeforEasySpinachQuicheisadeliciousway to use frozen spinach.

1. What was the first pop group memorialized in London’s Madame Tussauds Wax Museum? How were they posed?2. Who sang lead on “My Girl”? Name the group.3. How did Booker T. & the M.G.’s get their start?4. Who had a hit with “Harden My Heart,” and when?5. Name the song with this lyric: “I seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.”

Answers1. The Beatles, in 1964. They were sprawled on a red couch and playing instruments.2. David Ruffin, in 1964. He was with The Temptations at the time. Smokey Robinson pulled the song from The Miracles and had Ruffin do lead with The Temptations.3. They were a house band at Stax Records in Memphis, working behind Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and others in 1962.4. Quarterflash, in 1980. The following year, their “Night Shift” was used as theme song in the film of the same name.5. “Fire and Rain,” by James Taylor in 1970. Rumor and myth surrounding the song are wrong. The “Suzanne” mentioned was someone he met, not his girlfriend who died while flying to see him. The other verses talk of his time in rehab centers, wanting to “make a stand” against drug addiction.

With the football season beginning to wind down, you might be interest in what spectators have been paying for tickets at some of the stadiums. Tidbits presents the most expensive, the least expensive, and a glance at Super Bowl ticket prices.

• The price tag for game attendance is based on the Fan Cost Index, a figure derived by the Team Marketing Report. This figure represents the price for a family of four to attend an NFL game, including four tickets at the average price, two small beers, four small sodas, four hot dogs, parking, two game programs, and two adult caps. The average league-wide figure is $427.42.

• The fifth most-expensive stadium, Chicago Bears’ Soldier Field, carries a Fan Cost Index of $557.18. Home of the Bears since 1971, it holds 61,500 fans, and has an average single ticket price of $101.55. Fans can have a beer for $8 and a hot dog for $5. The team has a season ticket renewal rate of 98%, and every game has sold out for the last 27 years.

• The third most expensive stadium belongs to the New England Patriots, with an index of $597.66, and a single ticket average of $117.84. Gillette Stadium also offers “premium tickets,” which include oversize plush seats, fancier food and beverages, flat screen TV’s, and access to the field post-game. Want a season ticket? Get in line, there’s a waiting list.

• The Dallas Cowboys play in the second most expensive stadium, with a cost index of $613.80. The $6 price tag on sodas is the highest in the league, and fans fork over $75 for parking at the three-year-old arena. If money is a little tight, spectators

can purchase a $29 “party pass” that allows a STADIUMS (continued): standing-room view of the game from platforms on the end zone and corners.

•MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is the only NFL stadium shared by two teams. The most expensive stadium ever built and the largest in the NFL in terms of permanent seating capacity (82,500), it is home to both the New York Jets and the New York Giants. The cost index differs between the two teams, with the Giants the fourth-highest in the league at $592.26 and a whopping $464.75 for

a premium seating ticket. The most expensive tickets in the league belong to the Jets with the index at $628.90. If you’d like to reserve two tickets for the Jets in the premium club area, you can do

so for a five-year period for $24,340.

• How about the cheapest prices in the league? That honor belongs to EverBank Field, home of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although it’s the fifth-largest stadium in the NFL, its Fan Cost Index is just $316.50, and an average ticket price of $58.90. It’s close to the bottom in terms of attendance.

• The average ticket price for last year’s Super Bowl was $2,900. Tickets for the 2013 game are slated to be much higher, with the cheapest in the $2,500 range and the most expensive over $9,500. This will be the 7th year for the contest at New Orleans’ Superdome, the largest fixed-dome structure in the world, which has a seating capacity exceeding 76,000. New York’s MetLife Stadium is scheduled for the 2014 matchup.
