Southwest Meeting

Southwest Meeting: Adapting Project Management Practices to Unconventional Oil

and Gas

Unconventional Oil and Gas capital projects need a way to plan and execute in a highly dynamic, thin margin environment; a way that draws upon ‘classic’ PM principles, but makes the ‘system’ fit for purpose. To explore this, we’ll discuss three things: 1.Contextual differences from offshore (or, major, complex projects) to onshore (or, smaller, not as complex but very fast moving projects); 2.Challenges in planning, and executing in the onshore environment; and 3.Approaches and tools used to meet those challenges. Takeaways – listen for how YOUR context faces similar challenges, and be thinking of how YOU can adapt YOUR PM practices to meet them.

Woodlands Meeting

Woodlands Meeting: Hats Off to Leadership

As project managers, many of us find ourselves in a position where we have to wear many hats to drive our project to success. Ultimately, our role as the project manager is to deliver a well-run, successful project. However, from the beginning to the end we find ourselves playing many roles from analyst to protector, den mother to executive and even therapist. Yes there's a need for us to be multi-talented and versatile, but playing all these roles at once can become very difficult. Perhaps a better alternative is to simply provide great leadership. Leadership includes all of the necessary ingredients for producing extraordinary results. This session will focus on what the qualities are that a leader must have to deliver outstanding performance through others. Participants will leave the session with: • A better understanding of what makes a project manager extraordinary • Become familiar with the four components of leadership

2015 Board of Director Election Results

SVP Internal Operations 2014 - Sharon Greiff, PMP

I am currently serving as the SVP – Internal Operation at PMI Houston; a position I was appointed to in January

2014. Prior to this appointment, my volunteer efforts for PMI Houston have included serving as

VP of Financial Affairs for three years, Project Manager for the PMI Houston Annual conference

in 2009 and serving on various committees and projects for the past several years. I have a

great interest in "giving back" to both my professional and personal pursuits and consider it an

honor to serve as a Board Member for the PMI Houston Organization.

My professional background includes experience in the Oil & Gas, Mining, Financial and

Automotive industries as both a Project Manager and as a Program Manager. I am currently engaged at Lyondell

Basell, one of the world's premier plastics, chemicals and refining companies, as a Senior Project Manager. I hold

a bachelor's degree in business from the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh and a master's

degree in business/information technology from the University of Houston.

SVP Internal Operations 2015 - Richard Freilich, PMP

I've been involved in our Chapter since 2007 and was elected VP Finance 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 where I

gathered an outstanding team to design and deploy a low cost, Best of Breed, Non-Profit accounting system which

is completely Web-based. This permitted our diverse and well-traveled Board members (we still have to make a

living after all) to be able to conduct Chapter financial business no matter where we traveled in the world.

Separation of Duties is a very important aspect for financial integrity and thanks to my outstanding team of

volunteers, was able to structure the Finance Committee to provide our Chapter this high level of security and

contributed to PMI Houston being awarded Chapter of the Year. Our fully scalable model was recognized by PMI

Global and I was honored to present Financial Management in Virtual space (or Finally Paperless!) at the 2010 PMI

Global Congress NA.

PMI Houston is the largest secret organization in Houston. I believe that innovation is the key to better serve the

Membership and Houston Community by raising awareness, providing robust job/career space, outreach to

businesses and education, and to become THE resource for all things Project Management. This can be

Thought Leadership in Project Management

This month’s article Challenging Classic Project Management: Turning Project Uncertainties Into Business Opportunities

describes the study performed by the authors Thomas G. Letcher, Barbara H. Edington and Ting Gao. The aim of this study was

to identify classes of opportunities and the related circumstances in which they occur throughout the implementation of projects, in

order to probe the importance of uncertainties in the conception of opportunities.

The exploratory case study consisted of 20 categorized projects to explore the perception of risks, uncertainties and

opportunities and how they impact project results and influence the creation of project value. Classic project management does

not visibly make a distinction between risks (known unknowns) and uncertainties (unknown unknowns). As stated by the authors,

uncertainties do not necessarily lead to negative results and taking this into account, they present a definition of project value

opportunities as “a potential to alter the quality and/or exceed the predefined stakeholder value of a project”.

The categories of opportunities identified in the study are: technical innovation, opportunities in implementation process,

business opportunity and future project business opportunity. To take advantage of these opportunities, in order to add value to

the project, usually a redefinition of the baseline is needed. Regarding the sources of project uncertainties identified, they were

classified as contextual turbulences (e.g. dynamic markets, regulatory uncertainty), stakeholders (e.g. customer, vendors, etc.),

technological uncertainties, organizational uncertainties (e.g. corporate merge), project uncertainties (e.g. unrecognized

complexity) and malpractice (e.g. deficiency in the application of project management standards). The authors also noted that

some opportunities and uncertainties were misperceived by the interviewees. For instance, considering the project itself as an

opportunity and declaring the risks as uncertainties.

From the analysis of the authors, the review of the cases indicated that the identified opportunities were always related to

uncertainties. Then, it was proposed that “opportunity could be discovered or created from uncertainties in project settings” and

“project managers who can perceive uncertainties have a higher likelihood to discover and explore opportunities”. Moreover, the

findings led to propose that “project managers with a business-oriented mindset are more likely to identify opportunities and their

exploitation is beneficial for project value”.

As mentioned before, the lack of lucid difference between risk and uncertainty in classical project management leaves

room for misperceptions at project and enterprise levels. Project managers perform risk management based on minimizing variation

from the baseline. However, they usually don’t consider the identification of uncertainties that could lead to opportunities. The

authors suggest the steps to recognize opportunities, starting from the identification of uncertainties that fall in the categories listed

previously. It was affirmed that there is a need to refocus the management perspective from “goal adherence to value creation”,

since the baseline is defined initially without consciousness of uncertainty. The authors suggest that even if it is responsibility of

the project manager to identify opportunities, the senior managers should promote the project manager’s authority to “engage in

value-enhancing opportunity identification and exploitation”.

The authors concluded that counting on project managers with business perspective may be a significant element for

maximizing the potential value of a project to the enterprise. Then, education should be oriented in encouraging a business attitude

to think ahead of the constraints and to generate value further than initial expectations.

Lead successful meetings or seminars

Present persuasive arguments, summations or brainstorming

Our first two PM Toastmasters clubs started in late 2008 and were actually chartered in March & April of 2009. They are located

in North Houston and the Galleria area to serve the project management community in the northwest and central Houston areas.

A third club was recently chartered in Sugar Land and membership is growing steadily. "We realized the need for a third club to

serve the West and Southwest Houston area and the response was very positive. Within a few weeks we were able to charter a

new club and we have added several members each month," explained Bruce Garrett, Southwest club president.

Project Management Toastmasters clubs are open to all, but members are predominately professional project managers. We

welcome people from all backgrounds and professions. "These clubs are unique and give professionals the opportunity to build

communication and leadership skills,” noted VP of Public Relations, Kim Montes.

Houston Area Project Management Toastmasters Clubs are sponsored by PMI Houston and aligned with the goals of PMI

International, and certified PMPs receive Professional Development Units (PDU’s) for participation.
