Next year will be an exciting year for all Australians, as the 14th of February 2016 marks the golden anniversary of Australian decimal currency.

In commemoration of this momentous milestone in Australia’s history, we have proudly themed the 2016 Proof and Uncirculated Year Sets accordingly. At the ‘flip of a coin’ you will see pre-decimal coin designs from 50 years ago combined with the decimal coin designs which have succeeded them. It will evoke nostalgia for those that experienced The Changeover to decimal currency in 1966 and will help educate Australia’s current generation.

The Mint was present at three exciting Australian sporting grand finals this year, to allow our collectors the opportunity to counterstamp a coin as a memento of each event. The Mint travelled to Sydney for the 2015 Netball World Cup Grand Final, where the Australian Diamonds defeated the New Zealand Silver Ferns. The Mint also provided the opportunity for collectors to take home a keepsake of the 2015 Toyota AFL Premiership Season and the 2015 NRL Telstra Premiership Season grand finals. Please see page 14/15 for more information on The Ultimate Collection – AFL and NRL.

The Mint’s Gallery was recently transformed with the installation of the temporary exhibition Valour, Courage, Bravery. The four stories presented are about people whose extraordinary acts of courage and bravery have been appropriately recognised. If you are in Canberra we strongly encourage you to visit this very emotive exhibition.

As we close on 2015 a year in which the Mint celebrated its 50th birthday can I wish you all, on behalf of the Mint, a safe and happy holiday season and we look forward to celebrating another major event in Australia’s history in 2016 - the 50th anniversary of Australian decimal currency.

THE CHANGEOVER – 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF DECIMAL CURRENCY

S I X C O I N Y E A R S E T S

NEW

54

For the first nine years after Australia was federated in 1901, English currency was used as Australian money. Then in 1910, the first coins struck emulated the English monetary system. Pounds, shillings and pence were established as Australian money until the historic changeover to decimal currency on 14 February 1966.

In 2016, the Mint will celebrate the 50th anniversary of decimal currency. The beloved circulating designs of today on the reverse are joined by depictions of Australia’s pre-decimal coins on the obverse, celebrating then and now. These Year Sets are the first ever to feature unique designs on the obverse, making them a must have in your collection.

On 11 November 1918, the Armistice was enacted and the combat of the First World War ceased. After four years of conflict, the world was at peace. In honour of this, the Mint has created Australia’s newest circulating commemorative coin and a limited edition ‘C’ mintmark edition.

Featuring an inscription from the poem In Flanders Fields, of which 2015 marks its 100th anniversary, this poignant coin design remembers the scene that the brave soldiers endured during the First World War.

With the sunset glow of the coloured rings, surrounded by sculpted larks symbolising peace, this coin is a tribute to the memory of the fallen in remembering their sacrifice. Nominal Specifications

On 10 October 1915, 26 men left their hometown of Gilgandra, in a recruiting march effort to join the Australian Imperial Force. The Coo-ees, as they became known, had increased in numbers to 263 by the time they had covered the 320 miles to arrive in Sydney and enlist.

This gesture spoke for a nation that wished to contribute to Commonwealth efforts in the First World War and subsequent snowball marches started soon after. The Coo-ees were joined in by the Kookaburras, Kurrajongs and Boomerangs to name just a few.

The Mint collaborated with Gilgandra Shire Council to commemorate a centenary of the Coo-ee March as part of the Australia Remembers series.

The kangaroo has captured the hearts of Australian numismatists since 1993 with the release of the Royal Australian Mint’s Kangaroo Series. In 2016 the Kangaroo Series

continues with the announcement of a new design that captures the exquisite and natural beauty of the kangaroo and the Australian landscape.

The reverse of this coin depicts a mother Eastern Grey Kangaroo and offspring, in its habitat during the winter months. The Eastern Grey Kangaroo can be found across the inland plain and coastal landscape of Australia.

These fine silver editions exemplify what the Mint is well-known for; intricate details with an array of silver hues accentuated by the carefully sculpted elements.

Continuing the Mint’s collaboration with Australia Zoo, the popular Australian Saltwater Crocodiles series features the beloved movie star crocodile, Monty. The 400 kilogram, 3.7 metre long Saltwater Crocodile rose to fame in the movie The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course and has been a member of the Australia Zoo family for more than forty years.

When Monty was caught from a Townsville boat ramp in 1975, he was only 3 feet long and Steve Irwin was only 3 feet tall! Steve and Monty grew up together and formed a very special bond. “I love Monty and Monty would absolutely LOVE to grab a

hold of me!” - Steve Irwin.

Stevan Stojanovic is the latest edition to the Royal Australian Mint Coin Design and Sculpting Team. Since moving from New Zealand in 2014, Stevan has worked on projects including the 2015 $5 Fine Silver Triangular Coin - Anzac Centenary,

2015 $5 Fine Silver Coin- The Story of the VOC Batavia, 2016 Lunar

Series: Year of the Monkey and the 2016 Lunar Series: Tetra-Decagon.

Stevan notes that his favourite project that he has worked on since joining the Mint was the 2015 $5 Fine Silver Triangular Coin

- Anzac Centenary.

“My favourite coin design that I have worked on since being here at the Royal Australian Mint is the triangle coin. It was a

complicated, technical coin to do and because it involved the friendship between New Zealand and Australian soldiers, it was very dear to me.”

Before joining the Mint, Stevan’s background in designing and sculpting included studying at the Italian Mint where he learnt the ancient artistic techniques from the best metallurgists in the world.

A move to Australia to work at the Royal Australian Mint was to follow. Stevan is currently working on several new and exciting coins, to be released soon for our collectors to enjoy!

FROM THE VAULTC O I N M E M O R I E S O F T H E S I X T I E S

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of decimal currency and the Royal Australian Mint played a central role in the changeover, producing some of the very first decimal coins.

It is still occasionally possible to find an old 1966 coin in your handful of change, but have you ever thought about the coins that they replaced?

The National Coin Collection at the Royal Australian Mint contains a full set of 1963-dated pre-decimal coins, the last year that these coins were made. For a year after the changeover in 1966, these coins were still in circulation side by side with the new decimal coins, meaning that Australians had to become

very good at working out the relative values of dollars and cents alongside pounds, shillings and pence!

At changeover in 1966, one shilling (twelve pence) was worth ten cents. Many people needed to carry special conversion guides for both currencies.

You’ll find this in this issue; the Royal Australian Mint will be releasing some special commemorative decimal coins featuring the old pre-decimal coin designs on the obverses.

These coins will no doubt spark plenty of memories among those who still remember using pennies, threepences, sixpences, shillings, florins, and crowns.
