Feeding forFitness According to WorkloadBy the Equerry nutrition team
Whether you’re just starting your horse’s fittening program or are already taking part in regular competitions correct training, management and an appropriate diet are all factors in helping your horse to achieve its maximum potential. Indeed, even minor dietary deficiencies could make all the difference in competitions where every second or point counts!By far, the most important nutrient affected by exercise is energy (calories). Muscles require energy to contract and the harder or longer the horse is working the more calories the muscles need. Other factors (e.g. temperament) can also affect the amount of calories needed. For example, fizzy horses are likely to need more calories, compared to those with a laid-back nature, as their highly strung attitude to life means they burn off more energy. Providing your horse with the correct level of calories is very simple; if you feed more than your horse needs they will gain weight, but too few and they will lose weight. In the early stages of your horse’s training program feeding ample forage (hay/ haylage/ grass) and a low energy concentrate feed e.g. Equerry Cool Mix or Cubes should supply all the calories your horse needs. Some horses will even be able to compete successfully on these feeds so monitor how your horse is looking and performing. If feeding Equerry Cool Mix or Cubes to horses competing at high levels we
advise adding half the recommended rate of a feed balancer (e.g. TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer) to the ration, thereby ensuring that all micronutrient requirements are met. Horses that require a ‘step-up’ in terms of feed will benefit from the higher levels of energy, protein and micronutrients provided by Equerry Performance Cubes or Sports Mix.Providing energy for performance is not a difficult task. However, providing the right type of energy can be a bit more challenging and depends on the type of work your horse is doing, in which discipline, and their temperament. Generally, cubes are preferable for horses competing in stamina disciplines (e.g. eventing or endurance) as they contain more controlled energy from fibre and oil. Cubes are also ideal for excitable horses as the lower levels of starch help to minimise fizzy behaviour. On the other hand, mixes are perfect for horses needing additional ‘oomph’ or those competing in short-duration disciplines (e.g. show-jumping). When feeding any compound feeds it’s very important to consider meal size. Large meals can result in undigested starch passing to the hind-gut. This disrupts the normal bacterial balance and can cause problems such as colic. All Equerry feeds, when fed as recommended, provide less than 1g starch per meal/kg bodyweight as recommended by the very latest scientific recent research.Working horses also need a good supply of amino acids, the ‘building blocks’ of protein, in order to develop topline, support correct muscle function and repair. Although the
Continued on next page
horse can make around half of the amino acids in their body, essential amino acids such as lysine must be provided in the diet. Typically, a concentrate feed containing 12% protein is sufficient for horses in medium-hard work. However, feeds with higher levels of protein e.g. Equerry Conditioning Cubes and Mix will benefit horses that struggle to maintain condition and develop topline. In competition horses, the increased need for macro-nutrients is accompanied by a higher demand for micronutrients i.e. vitamins and minerals. Micronutrients are essential for all aspects of performance including; energy utilisation, muscle metabolism, bone strength and immune function. Equerry feeds are fully balanced, when fed at the recommended level, however if your horse receives less than this then we recommend adding an appropriate feed balancer or supplement to the ration.Horses in medium-hard work also have an increased requirement for electrolytes. In most cases, except for endurance horses
or horses with a reduced forage intake, electrolyte losses are met by an appropriate diet. For good doers, where concentrate feeds are restricted, additional salt is required. It is best to speak to a nutritionist for your own horse’s specific requirements. Every horse is an individual and factors such as their condition, bodyweight, temperament, workload and management must all be considered when deciding on the most appropriate ration. Fine tuning the diet of hard working competition horses can be complex as the requirements for water, energy, protein, minerals, some trace elements and vitamins, are increased. If you are unsure of which feed will best suit your horse then please contact the Equerry Helpline on 01845 565640 or visit www.equerryhorsefeeds.com

Gastric ulcers are more common than you may think with up to 92% of competition horses being affected. Symptoms can include one or more of the following - increased incidence of colic, decreased performance, lack of energy, irritability, reduced appetite, weight loss and a dull, rough coat.
There is now a natural supplement available that can help prevent this condition which has been clinically proven and is recommended by vets and used by event riders throughout Europe.
Equine 74 Gastric Conditioner provides long
lasting buffering action against excess acid in the stomach and helps to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers by maintaining a healthy stomach. It also promotes calmer behaviour in performance horses and youngsters.
Equine 74 for Bone and Joint Health nutritionally supports bone turnover and repair, maximises calcium retention leading to superior bone strength. This is an ideal supplement for event horses to support them in their demanding job. It is scientifically proven and has been peer reviewed in the Equine Journal of Science and recommended by vets worldwide.

1. The Adrenaline Junkie
These type of horses tend to be naturally very forward going and can become easily excitable, so it is important to keep the levels of starch in the diet to a minimum, diets containing high levels of starch that are digested relatively quickly by the horse produce fast release energy which is the type of energy that can cause some horses to become over excitable. Choose a feed that is high in fibre and if additional energy is required for stamina consider adding oils into the diet.
2. The Fussy Eater
There are many reasons why a horse may be a fussy eater, whether this is due to the flavour and texture of the feeds or if they just have a small appetite. If possible divide the overall concentrate into as many small meals a day as possible in order to avoid overloading the stomach which can cause digestive upsets and affect appetite. Choose a feed that is nutrient or energy dense, high oil supplements are also an extremely useful way of boosting calorie intake without significantly adding to the overall volume fed.
3. The Sensitive Horse
If you have a horse that is sensitive and suffers from a feed intolerance you first need to establish what component of the feed is responsible, which often means placing a horse on an elimination diet. The simplest way to do this is to go back to basics by feeding your horse a high quality fibre based product and then slowly building your horses feed back up. Choose a feed that is cereal free with a very low starch and sugar content, ideally with a combined level of less than 10%.
4. The Good Doer
The good doer often lacks energy and can tend to be a bit lazy. However putting more energy into the diet can often increase the risk of weight gain, so the first objective is to ensure that they are of a healthy weight and that the diet is well balanced. If more energy is still required choose a feed that contains some cereals, as this will provide instant fast release energy. However, be careful to adjust the quantity fed depending upon work.
5. The Perfect Partner
If you are lucky enough to own a perfect partner then the main consideration should be given to feed according to workload and condition. Most horses in light to moderate work such as those competing in regular Pony Club and Riding Club activities will do well on a high fibre diet that is fully balanced. However, a horse in hard or intense work will need a combination of energy sources including fibre, oils, protein and cereals to meet the demands of work.

“Not on my yard” is the message behind our campaign here at Tudor Rose Equines, aimed
at combating bullying and harassment in our Equestrian world.
We are overwhelmed by the support already shown for the initiative, which is to take place during
this year’s national anti-‐bullying week (14-‐18 November). With an official campaign launch being
held at Greater Manchester Police Mounted Division Head Quarters.
T.R.E Set up in January 2016 by riders Samantha Thurlow , Alan Jones and Nicky White, to provide
those who lacked confidence with an opportunity to try new things in a relaxed atmosphere from
fun rides, clinics, Gymkhana’s and training, Encouraging riders at grassroots level to get out, try new
things and have fun on their horses and ponies. Seeing so many Low confidence issues it made us
probe into why they were so prevalent at every level?
We wanted to know why! We found bullying was a very taboo subject in our world; it’s not really
addressed under the equestrian banner and we thought: we need to do something about it! You just
have to see some of the comments made on online forums and social media, it’s shocking how
people are treated. It wouldn’t be tolerated in a school or a place of work so why should it be
different at Yards, Competitions and Venues?
This is where our partnership agencies and rider ambassadors come in, Greater Manchester Police heard of the campaign and saw that some of the experiences shared were in violation of current UK harassment legislation! We are working hard with GMP and the British Horse Society to ensure everyone takes account and this behaviour is stamped out for good. Our Ambassador riders are also sharing the word through their own social media platforms.
As part of raising awareness, riders at all level are encouraged to join together, show support and share their favourite Photos and Videos on social media using the hashtag #NOTONMYYARD
An exciting pinnacle of the campaign is a photo shoot at our ambassador venue Kelsall Hill where
riders of all disciplines come together to show support to tackle bullying and harassment in the
equestrian world Read more at http://www.tudorroseequine.co.uk
