Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank many of you for joining in with our celebrations for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Holden Heritage
Collection, whether it was through social media, events or buying the special collectible products. With such success, we have seen some delays with orders being sent out and have engaged additional resources to work around the clock to get your delivery to you.
As mentioned above, August and September were exciting months at the Mint. It was an honour to cheer on our Australian Olympic and Paralympic Team Coin Program Ambassadors who competed with such great displays of athleticism and sportsmanship.
The Mint Condition Holden Heritage Car Show was a huge hit with many lining up to get their hands on the Collection. Thank you to everybody that was able to come along to the event, it was a great day.
The warmer October weather brings with it a range of exciting new products including the Kangaroo at Sunset 10th Anniversary Coin on page 8 and the final celebratory product for the 50th anniversary of decimal currency, a special Selectively Gold Plated Coin presented on the inside back cover.
I hope you enjoy the issue and the warmer weather, happy reading.

DIRK HARTOG LANDFALL
4 0 0 T H A N N I V E R S A R Y
Dirk Hartog and the crew of the Eendracht made history as the first recorded European visitors to land on Australian shores 400 years ago.
Hartog and his crew came across the islands of Shark Bay due in some part to serendipity. The gesture of leaving behind their marker, the inscribed pewter plate, would mean that their place in the history of Australia was assured. This plate was eventually returned to Hartog’s home country, the Netherlands, with a replica left in its place.
This coin is inspired by the inscribed pewter plate noting their arrival and is sure to resonate with history buffs and numismatics alike.

The Swan Dollar, sometimes referred to as the ‘Goose dollar’, while not an official Royal Australian Mint coin, is now part of numismatic history.
In 1966, when decimal currency was introduced in Australia a $1 coin was not included in the new issue. As a result the Australian Coin Review publication conducted a competition asking people to submit their proposed designs.
The winning submission was designed by Andor Meszaros and featured a swan with the date 1967 on the obverse. The reverse design showcased wattle and the denomination of 100 cents. When this coin design was rejected by the
authorities, competition organisers decided to have it minted privately. In 1967, it was engraved and struck by John Pinches Medallists of London.
There was 1500 specimen uncirculated silver coins issued that featured a milled edge, 750 proof pieces with a plain edge and 10 gold with the plain edge. The exact number of coins is not known but this piece remains a popular item with collectors to this day. While it is referred to as a coin, as you can see from the images below, it was actually more like a token as it was not made to be legal tender.

The final opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of decimal currency is here with a special selectively gold plated round 50 cent coin that everyone will want!
The 2016 Round 50c Fine Silver Selectively Gold Plated Proof Coin is the perfect way to conclude the celebrations. The round shape of the silver proof coin is reminiscent of the original 50 cent coin before the dodecagonal shape was introduced in 1969.
The Australian Coat of Arms design, chosen to go on the 50 cent because it was the largest denomination at that time, has been meticulously selectively gold plated creating the ideal collectible. With a low mintage of 7500, this exclusive product won’t be around for long – place your order now. Limits may apply.
