It’s quite an impressive claim but hey Timex, if for any reason I end up 660ft under water... I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t need a watch.

“Are you coming to my fancy dress party?”“I don’t really do fancy dress.”“Oh come on, please, it’ll be fun.”“Erm...ok.”“Cool. Who will you be?”“The Invisible Man.”

The jumper I got for Christmas kept picking up static electricity so I took it back to the shop and exchanged it for another one free of charge.

It’s been a bad start to the year as I can’t fi nd my Yorkshire Terrier anywhere. And, to top it all off, my pet snake appears to have a massive tumour.

Had to rush our puppy to the vets earlier after the he ate the Christmas tree lights whilst I was taking them down. When the vet made a fuss of him and said you will be alright, his little face lit up.

I’m going to have to rethink my time machine rental business.People keep bringing them back a day before they rented them.

The downside of being a bomb disposal technician? It took six hours to open my Christmas gifts.

I decided to confi de in my wife that I kept hearing voices coming from our electrical appliances.“Yeah, I know: the TV and radio,” she replied sarcastically.“I told you she wouldn’t bloody believe you,” said the kettle.

So my girlfriend told me to choose between our relationship and my career as a reporter.Well, I’ve got some news for her.

There’s a sign in the gents at work saying, ‘Please leave these toilets as you found them.’So I always walk out backwards.

UNDERUSED AUTOMATED TOILETS TO CLOSE IN ORDER TO SAVE PUBLIC MONEYFollowing a public consultation, fi ve sets of automated public toilets are set to close across Sheffi eld in order to save around £100,000 a year in maintenance costs.

As the toilets are used so infrequently, keeping them open would cost Sheffi eld City Council just under £10 per use. At the least popular facility, in Birley Moor Road, the cost of each use would be more than £56.Despite extensive publicity in the press, online, on the radio and in face-to-face meetings, only 22 people took part in the consultation, which ran for fi ve weeks in the autumn.

Of those people who gave their views, 57 per cent said they had never used the automated public toilets in Angel Street, Birley Moor Road, Holme Lane, Staniforth Road and on Devonshire Green. At present, these toilets are only used an average of fi ve times a day – and the Birley Moor Road facility was only used 357 times in the whole of 2014.Councillor Sioned-Mair

Richards, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Sheffi eld City Council, said: “The Government is making yet more cuts to local government funding. Over the last fi ve years we have had to fi nd savings of £300m and we are expecting another £50m in the coming fi nancial year.“We know that public toilets are an essential facility and will ensure there is still provision across Sheffi eld. However, in these times of austerity, it is simply not cost-effective to keep running these automated toilets which, in some cases, aren’t even used as often as once a day.“The fact that the toilets aren’t used was also refl ected in the fact that so few people took part in the public consultation. We will now be closing these automated toilets, while ensuring there is other provision where people need it.”The changes have come about

because the fi ve automated toilets are linked to Sheffi eld City Council’s advertising contract, which is expiring. The maintenance costs of these fi ve facilities are currently paid for by the company that provides them, which gains an income from the advertising on the units. However, from next month the advertising will stop and the maintenance costs – an estimated £20,000 per year per facility – will have to be paid for by Sheffi eld City Council. This means that the average cost to the council for each use of the toilet would be just under £10. People who use the toilets pay either 10p or 20p, depending upon the site.Sheffi eld City Council is also encouraging businesses to become part of the Community Toilet Scheme, which ensures provision of clean, safe and accessible

public toilets across the city.Further information on the scheme is available at www.sheffi eld.gov.uk/in-your-area/toilets/community-toilet.html

Key fi ndings

In total, 22 people responded to the consultation.Of those, only nine reported having ever used the automated toilets being consulted on.Of those reporting using the current facilities, frequency of usage was low, with seven respondents using the facilities less than once per month.Eight respondents reported having a disability.Approximately 50 per cent of respondents were aware of the Community Toilet Scheme.Several suggestions were received for additional businesses / providers to join the scheme.

This week MP’s will be debating the equalisation of the state pension age for women. The debate will be opened by Mhairi Black MP. Parliamentary time has been allocated to discuss this subject following a petition on the parliamentary website gained more than 100,00 signatures. This subject has had such a huge response because so many women think it is unfair – many women were given less than two years notice before they expected to retire that they would have to work another 18 months before they qualifi ed to receive a state pension.

A senior advisor at the OECD has said that the increase in pension age for women will lead to health problems for employers. “Frankly, our population is not healthy enough to work that long. When you actually look at the health status of people between 60 and 70, you

see a very rapid decline in the UK. We are talking about a pension age of 68 and we almost certainly do not have the health to make that viable,”.At Sheffi eld 50+ we think he’s missing the point. It isn’t the employers who will have problems, its people who have to, or want to, work for longer. Very few employers take a fl exible approach which would mean people can keep working for longer. If more employers were willing to look at adjusting the hours worked or changing the nature of the work to fi t the abilities of their older employees they would be able to tap into the great experience older workers have built up. If you have any experience of this, Sheffi eld 50+ is collecting information on how Sheffi eld people are affected. Get in touch at admin@sheffi eld50plus.org.uk or on 0114 253 6736.

PENSIONS - THERE’S LOTS GOING ON!

www.sense.org.uk/inmemory0300 3309257Charity no. 289868

Flowers are for a day but donati ons are life changing

Failure to save earlier in life to build up a pension is the biggest fi nancial regret for over a quarter of over 65 year-olds, a survey suggests. 26% of those aged 65-74 polled by The Share Centre said they wished they had started putting money aside while they still could. The fi ndings also revealed that even those who have savings haven’t quite met their targets, with 22% of over 75s admitting that they wished they had put larger amounts aside.Richard Stone, chief executive of The Share Centre, said: “If those already at or in retirement are admitting they haven’t saved enough money and are now looking back with regret, then those with retirement ahead of them need to take note.”Sheffi eld 50+ is hoping to work with Pensionwise in 2016 to offer pensions advice to people in Sheffi eld who want to review their fi nances. And a good reason to do it was raised by the OECD recently. Apparently the state pension provision in the UK, at 18% of average earnings, is ranked 32 out of 34 in the world, with only Mexico and Chile worse off. The gap between earnings and pensions has widened so whether you are still working or are already retired, it’s worth exploring all the options available to you.

AGEING - THE BIG PICTUREAre you a keen photographer? There are just a few days left to upload your photo to https://www.photocrowd.com/challenges/374-ageing-bigger-picture/ which fi nishes on Sunday 10th January.Getting older is a complex process, but it’s all too easy to revert to clichés when it comes to representing old age. A challenge run by the British Society of Gerontology and Photocrowd, this is a chance for you to show a more nuanced approach to the subject: they want to see how you’ve captured the multiple realities of ageing. They want images that will stimulate conversation and make people think about ageing as a concept. £3600 in cash prizes to be wonEven if you’re not a photographer, why don’t you visit the site and look at the photos already there – they are beautiful and you will be able to vote for your favourites.

They are looking for women aged over 65 with an adventurous spirit to take part in a television series to be fi lmed in spring and summer of 2016 in different foreign locations. To fi nd out more you can call 0203 696 5054 or email [email protected] or write to Burning Bright Productions, Kirkham House, 12-14 Whitfi eld Street, London W1T 2RF

Preview: Bring Me The Horizon, 06/11/16, Sheffi eld Arena

By Kt Evans

If there is one group who have their sights fi rmly set on capturing 2016, without ques-tion this would be the infamous Northern brigade Bring Me The Horizon. The Shef-fi eld fi ve piece, who have stormed their way onto the mainstream market, have recently announced they are to return to their home-town to perform a very special live perfor-mance at the mighty Sheffi eld Arena on 6th November. We have a sneaking suspicion tickets are going to shoot off the shelves, so book early to avoid missing out on arguably the show of their career. It would be fair to say that Bring Me The Horizon well and truly stole 2015. With the release of their fi fth studio album, “That’s The Spirit,” the UK and beyond went crazy for the group who have transformed into one of Brit-ain’s fi nest alternative rock packs. Their fi rst single, “Happy Song” from their chart topping record was streamed throughout international radio stations along with the album receiv-ing the number one position on Rock Sound Magazines most essential albums of 2015…( and if you follow M-Live weekly, you’ll also know that we reviewed the album and gave it a glowing 5 stars) With references to that of late Metallica, Linkin Park and Thirty Seconds To Mars, what is so inspiring about “That’s The Spirit” is the depth and song writing ability as demonstrated by vocalist and lyricist Oli Sykes. A record with more furiousness that a caged circus lion, if you have yet to listen to the record in full…where the heckers have you been the last few months? So…to the main event…Bring Me The Hori-zon have recently announced that they are to return to the Steel City to perform a one off show at Sheffi eld Arena on 6th November. With a string of arena dates to include Barclays Arena in Birmingham, The O2 Arena in London and Manchester Arena, this hometown

Legendary Sheffi eld-born singer, songwriter and former frontman of Ace, Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics returns to the road with his band in early 2016 for a 34-date UK tour visiting all of his favourite venues. With a back-catalogue of hits to his name including “How Long”, “Tempted” and “The Living Years”, Paul’s uniquely soulful voice is a must for his millions of fans around the world . His amazing songs have been per-formed by some of the biggest names in music including The Eagles, Diana Ross and Tom Jones and he is constantly in demand as a ses-sion keyboardist, having recorded and toured with Elton John, Van Morrison, Roger Waters and BB King, and most recently on Eric Clap-ton’s world tour. Dubbed by the BBC as ‘The Man with the Golden Voice’, Paul is undoubtedly a key fi g-ure in British pop history, an all-rounded musi-

cal talent. And as his devoted fans know all too well, a Paul Carrack show is truly something very special. Paul said “I can’t wait to get back out on the road again in 2016. I love touring in the UK and I’ve chosen 34 of my favourite venues to perform in.”Tickets for Paul Carrack (subject to booking fees) at City Hall - Sheffi eld are available online through at www.sheffi eldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffi eld City Hall Box Offi ce.

gig is one we simply cannot wait for. When we cast our minds back to BMTH performances in Sheffi eld, it seems slightly surreal remem-bering when the fi ve piece headlined The O2 Academy on Arundel Gate with While She Sleeps and Architects, or even seizing the main stage at infamous venue Leadmill in 2013 as part of their “Sempiternal” album launch. Go-ing even further back, we have hazy memories of catching the quintet performing one of their debut shows in the small room at Corporation Night Club…and keep in mind that the small room has a capacity of around 250 people. Their transition has been remarkable, not to mention their repertoire which has grown not only in size but also is now more polished, professional and relatable to all.More recently, Bring Me have hosted the main stage at Leeds and Reading Festival 2015 to support the mighty Metallica along with their album tour back in October when they sold-out Alexandria Palace in London. Firm favourites at rock mecca Download Festival at Donnington Park, the band’s following has increased with eye watering effect. Although no British festivals have been announced for the band yet, their European tour dates tell a totally different tale…from Hellfest in France to Amnesia Rockfest in Canada, Bring Me The Horizon have got one hell of a summer geared up for them.Bring Me The Horizon will be performing at Sheffi eld’s Arena on 6th November 2016. Tickets have not yet been released for the show, however you can sign up to the band’s pre-sale list on the website – www.bmthoffi -cial.com /tour and click on your required date. More information to follow (we promise!)

SHEFFIELD ROCK GIANTS ANNOUNCE HOMETOWN SHOW

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE RETURNS HOME

Begin Here – The Zombies

The Zombies were part of the British music invasion that rocked the United States and recorded their debut, Begin Here, in 1965. The fi ve piece from St. Albans, London, were not just any regular band from the beat scene though; they had something different to offer. On Begin Here they blend jazz, blues and rock to superb effect.Chris White and Rod Argent share the song-writing duties and its Argent’s piano and keyboard talent that really defi nes The Zombies’ sound. It’s a genre jumping album with hard driving R&B tracks like Woman combined with sensitive numbers like the soft, sad and devastatingly lonely ballad, The Way I Feel Inside, that ends way too soon. On Summertime, a smooth jazz offering, the band show just how dynamic they can be; the stops and starts, changes in tempo, and blissful vocals of Colin Blunstone really takes the listener away. The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly She’s Not There. An international hit for the Zombies and one of the great songs from the sixties. Hugh Grundy’s stuttering drum beat, Ardent’s jazzy electronic piano playing and the emphatic vocals of Blunstone creates a haunting masterpiece that seems to linger on in the ears after listening. The record also includes a fantastic cover of Smokey Robinson’s You Really Got A Hold Of Me, and there’s some Beatles-esque harmonies on I Can’t Make Up My Mind. Begin Here was probably ahead of its time and the suave sophisticated music of the Zombies maybe wasn’t appreciated as much as it should have been. Despite that, they were a major infl uence on The Doors and The Byrds, and were one of the most unique bands of the late sixties.

UK VEHICLE CRIME AT 20-YEAR LOWSteering locks and electronic immobilisers have helped to dramatically cut vehicle crime across the UK, according to the Home Offi ce.Vehicle theft and break-ins have fallen by 80% since 1993, reveals a new report released by the govern-ment department, despite the fact there are eight million more vehicles on the road today. There are now approximately three vehicle thefts and 10 vehicle break-ins for every 1,000 vehicles on the road, compared to 20 thefts and 40 break-ins in 1993.The Home Offi ce attributes the decline in vehicle crime to the growing popularity of anti-theft devices such as steering locks and electronic immobilis-ers, which were introduced in the 1960s and 1980s respectively.Modern technologies like number plate recognition cameras, CCTV surveillance and vehicle trackers are also helping to deter criminals.Mike Penning, UK Minister for Policing, Crime, Criminal Justice and Victims, says better policing has played a part as well. He claims it is safer than ever to own a car in the U, with overall vehicle crime at the lowest level since records began in 1981.

SEIZED UNINSURED CARS ON THE UPUninsured drivers have been warned they will be caught, as the number of impounded unin-sured vehicles continues to rise. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MBI) warning comes after its new estimates suggest around 118,500 vehicles with no cover will have been confi scated by the end of the year. This is a 2% rise on the 116,000 motors seized in 2014 and around 2,000 up on its target for the year. Its 116,500-vehicle goal was reached a fortnight early.RAC Insurance spokesman Pete Williams said: “With a worrying number of motorists driving on UK roads uninsured the fact that the authorities are making a real effort to crackdown on and prosecute offenders offers some reassurance.“The RAC’s Report on Motoring 2015 revealed that 26% of motorists are concerned about unin-sured and untaxed drivers with 7% stating it as their top concern.”The MBI works in tandem with local police forces in the fi ght to reduce uninsured driving. Motorists driving with no car insurance risk a £300 fi ne and six driving licence points.Offenders also face getting home on their own, a daily £20 car storage charge plus a £150 charge to get their vehicle back. The authorities crush the 30-40% of the impound-ed cars which go unclaimed for two weeks.MIB chief executive Ashton West told Press As-sociation reporters that the new fi gures make the message clear: if you don’t get insured we will fi nd you out.The latest statistics seem to be having a dramatic effect on reducing the number of offenders, he said. Mr West says that the number of uncovered motorists has halved in 10 years to about 1 million today from almost 2 million during 2005.The not-for-profi t Bureau is effectively a safety net which aims to help blameless drivers who suffer road accidents where the guilty parties are untrace-able or uninsured. The insurance sector-fi nanced MIB can legally get back any payments due to hurt victims of uninsured motorists, as well as any costs in making the claim. Its database is used by the police to fi nd out if vehicles are insured. The MIB call centre handles inquiries from police for details involving about a third of seized vehicles. The centre helps offi cers check extra information, including if a motorist claims they are covered when the Bureau’s database says they are not.

What do quarrelling squirrels, an overweight uncle, a teddy bear and a "UFO" all have in common? They were some of the more bizarre explanations given for cracked windscreens during the past year, according to Autoglass. The most common reported causes for damage are somewhat less surprising, with road rubble, temperature changes and collisions with birds among the most popular reasons for chips or cracks. But the fi rm has also compiled a list of the top 10 most weird and wacky customer claims, ranging from high-pitched noises to mysterious fl ying objects.Other things that did not quite make the list but seemed to pose a particular threat to windscreens in the past year included rogue hedge trimmers, lawnmowers and kayaks.Motorists are advised to take extra care with car windscreens and windows over the winter months. They can do this by warming them slowly, regularly topping up screen wash and replacing old wipers.Ahead of the colder conditions setting in, Autoglass's managing director Taxiarchis Konstantopoulos is keen to remind drivers that windscreen damage can happen at any time - including in unexpected circumstances.Every chip will eventually crack, he says, and with the windscreen accounting for up to 30% of a vehicle's structural integrity, he is warning

how important it is to get windscreens replaced or repaired as soon as possible.

Autoglass's top 10 wackiest excuses for windscreen damage over 2015 are:

1. Two quarrelling squirrels using conkers as ammunition

2. An elusive high-pitched noise that cracked the screen, set off car alarms, and even turned off a nearby television.

3. An airborne trampoline

4. A seemingly harmless teddy bear

5. An overweight uncle getting into the car

6. A donkey

7. A bow and arrow

8. A bee

9. What appeared to be a UFO

10. A kangaroo - in Australia

Option 1

I needed a break from the commercial furore that is Christmas (Bah Humbug!) this week, so took a trip to the beautiful River Dove in Staffordshire to try and pick off a grayling or two from one of my favourite swims. I got up late, arrived late, and set up late, so an inauspicious start to the session, but wow, what a morning! Clear blue skies and glorious sunshine awaited, a touch of colour in the water, and fi sh rising just below my chosen spot; what more could you ask for on a winter morn? I had intended to trot a fl oat along the now swirling current, but after a few runs, it quickly became apparent that I would perhaps need a treestump, weighed down with a bucket of concrete, to get anywhere near the main fl ow, so I switched to the trusty Sonik SK3 twin tip, pushed in a 3oz tip, and tackled up with the intention of targeting the near bank margin, where a large slack had formed as the river pushed through. Nothing complicated about my rig, a Kamasan Black maggot feeder, wrapped in insulation tape to slow the fl ow of maggots, and a size 14 hook baited with three white maggots. Between the hook and the feeder, a tiny swivel to negate line twist, and I was ready to pitch in… I lobbed the feeder just onto the near crease, and let it sink before tightening up. Plenty of debris was catching the line as leaves, reeds and twigs spun past, but eventually, the tip rested with a pleasing curve, and I watched intently, trying to decipher slow nodding movements to see if fi sh were feeding. BANG! The tip wrapped around almost pulling the rod off the rest, and a kiting fi ght, where the fi sh instantly charged for the main fl ow, told me it was probably a grayling; and fi rst cast too! A couple of minutes were required to net the fi sh, and in my hand, a fabulous shimmering bar of silver and grey, with an erect dorsal fi n, adorned with all manner of colours, which, as the morning sun shine through, looked positively beautiful. I think there are few fi sh which look so splendid as the winter grayling from a small river, so within minutes, I was pleased to accomplish the day’s mission. The

next cast; the same result, another chunk of loveliness as the delicate features of the fi sh were revealed and admired…I love these things! By feeding a tiny pinch (perhaps three or four) of maggots each cast, I was hoping to draw fi sh from downstream, and leave them hunting in my swim for something more substantial. It’s a tactic I know works well, and if I can get the fi sh in the mood, then forty odd fi sh is a real possibility. My bait continued to attract a good number of chunky fi sh, the best at 1lb 10oz, and I also engaged with a few trout to around 4lb which generally caused mayhem every time I hooked one, but proved good fun in the heavy fl ow. By now however, the sun was up, and shining brightly directly onto the water, relieving my swim of shadow, and causing the fi sh to disappear to darker cover. I suppose I could’ve moved, but a few short hours of fantastic sport, using a bare minimum of bait had ended with a tally of around twenty grayling and half a dozen boisterous trout so I left while the sun was still high. If you have never targeted grayling, then I recommend you have a go. Find them, and they are relatively simple to catch, with white maggot a preferred bait, and you’ll will fi nd a mini-marlin in waiting, which uses its huge dorsal fl ag to create resistance and which punch well above their weight. It’s a great way to spend an hour or three by the river, and at this time of year, we all need a break from celebrating!

£3.5M WORTH OF INVESTMENT FROM THE PREMIER LEAGUE & THE FA NORTH EAST AND YORKSHIRE 38 grants worth over £3.5million from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund (PL/FA:FF) have been awarded towards grassroots facility projects worth £21.8m between June and December 2015 across the whole of the North East and Yorkshire.Funding from the PL/FA:FF goes towards building new or refurbishing existing fl oodlit third generation (3G) football turf pitches (FTPs) and changing pavilions. The Fund also provides smaller grants for vital improvements, such as replacing unsafe goalposts and purchasing pitch maintenance equipment. This announcement of the latest round of funding follows the publication of the Government’s new Sport Strategy – Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation – which has seen the Premier League committing even more investment into the grassroots over the next three years. The Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England, have provided £102m between 2013 and 2016 towards the PL/FA:FF. The Football Foundation targets this investment into areas of greatest need and where it will have maximum effect. Last season facilities that the Football Foundation upgraded with the Fund’s investment recorded an average increase in football participation of 7%. Multi-sport participation (i.e. cricket; rugby; netball; etc.) also increased by an average of 8% at those same sites.Tracey Crouch MP, Minister for Sport, said: “Improving grassroots football facilities is vital to help us get more people involved in the game and nurture our future football stars. This latest £14

million worth of investment, from the Premier League, FA and Government, will benefi t community football across the country in locations that need it most.”Richard Scudamore, Executive Chairman of the Premier League, said: “The Football Foundation’s underlying strategy of delivering quality community facilities where they are needed most and can be best utilised is something the Premier League has long-supported. Creating opportunities for young people to play football and get involved with other sports is incredibly important to developing a taste for sport and exercise and all the ancillary benefi ts that brings to life. It also forges stronger bonds between communities and the professional football clubs sustained by them.”Martin Glenn, Chief Executive of The FA, said: “The number of grants approved over the past

six months is testimony to our commitment to the pursuit of better grassroots football facilities in this country.“Next year will see even greater intensity – continued investment in vital individual projects such as these and also the opening of the fi rst city football hubs – marking a step-change in the nature of grassroots football provision.”Nick Bitel, Sport England Chair, said: “Sports pitches and pavilions are used by millions of people each week, so it's important that we make sure that they're high quality, welcoming and accessible for everyone."We're proud to be working with the FA, Premier League, Government and Football Foundation to create so many excellent facilities that benefi t people now, and for years to come.”

MILLERS chief Neil Redfearn admitted his side’s last-gasp defeat at the hands of Preston North End was a “cruel” one to take for his side. The Millers looked on course to notch just their fourth draw of the campaign as Preston’s Eoin Doyle cancelled out Tony Andreu’s fi rst-half opener but Preston grabbed a late winner with just seconds on the clock when sub Jonson Clarke-Harris unfortunately headed into his own goal after the visitors failed to deal with a long throw into the box.Speaking afterwards, Redfearn believed his side were worthy of a share of the spoils in a feisty Roses clash. “It was cruel as I thought we played well fi rst half,” Redfearn insisted. “We deservedly went infront and with luck, we could have had another one. We said at half-time, we did not expect Preston to play like they did in the fi rst half and they would not let us do what

Rotherham United have completed the signing of Manchester City defender Shay Facey on a Standard Loan. The versatile operator has signed a deal with the Millers until the end of the season to become boss Neil Redfearn’s fi rst signing during the January transfer window which opened this morning.Facey, who has been training with the Millers in recent weeks, has represented England from under 16 right through to under 20 level, and can play either as a right back or a central defender.“Shay is an outstanding young talent,” a delighted Neil Redfearn told www.themillers.co.uk“He is a utility defender, he’s 20-years-old and he can play at right-back or centre-back. He has blistering pace, he is very aggressive and he can deal with the football. He is someone that Manchester City rate really highly, he has already been out and played some loan games in America, so he has come back over here and he is looking to gain some experience in this country.”Facey, who last year had a loan spell with New York, is the second player that has joined the Millers from the Premier League giants in recent months, after the arrival of midfi elder Brandon Barker.“For us to have the links with the Manchester City’s of this world is great,” Redfearn continued.“They obviously feel that their lads are

Aaron Taylor-Sinclair said that he and his Doncaster Rovers teammates were keen to build on back to back away wins against Oldham and Southend.Rovers are now unbeaten on the road in all competitions since late October.“I think we’ve done well,” Taylor-Sinclair said of the festive spell which yielded six points from a possible nine.“We’re disappointed with the defeat at home to Scunthorpe but we’re back on a good run now.”Taylor-Sinclair helped Rovers keep their fi rst clean sheet in seven games and also registered his second goal of the campaign as he volleyed home Conor Grant’s corner.

we wanted to do again and they put us on the backfoot from the beginning of the second half.”Redfearn bemoaned the loss of his skipper Lee Frecklington, who suffered a hamstring strain early in the game, while the Millers boss was forced to replace Derby loanee Farrend Rawson late in the game with the same injury, with the game very much in the balance at Deepdale. However, the Millers boss has called on his side to maintain their concentration for the full 90 minutes, as a momentary lapse near the end cost his side dear. “We’ve had to make changes that we didn’t want to make,” Redfearn added.“We are struggling for bodies and we had to make two substitutions during the course of the game. “You are looking for more resilience but you are talking about seconds near the end when the winner goes in.

coming into a good environment for them, which is credit to us and the club, so it is a great signing for us.”The 20-year-old will now face a battle to break into the Millers’ starting 11, which has performed well in recent weeks after recording victories over Hull City and Bolton Wanderers. Following defeat at Fulham last time out, Redfearn has acted quickly to help bolster his ranks as the Millers look to get back to winning ways this afternoon at Preston North End.“The fi rst thing that he has to try and do is get himself in the team,” Redfearn said of the Manchester-born ace.“He has been here now for two or three weeks so he has had chance to have a look at us, and we have had a look at him. He will be really looking forward to the challenge, like I have said he is an outstanding player, but physically he can also cope and that is what struck me most about him when he came in. He has the pace, physique and a front foot aggressive attitude to go and play.”

“I said after the Blackpool game (in which he scored his only other Rovers goal) that I’m a one a season man but I’ve got two now and I’m just happy that it’s helped the team out and hopefully we can progress from there.“It was a good performance from the lads - probably up there with one of the best this season, especially in terms of away from home so it’s a happy dressing room.“We said that if we keep a clean sheet then we have a really good chance of winning and that’s been proved.“The support from the fans has been brilliant and we say that on every away game, so long may that continue.”

Darren Ferguson lauded his side’s 3-0 victory over play-off chasing Southend United as the best performance over the Christmas period. After Boxing Day defeat at the hands of local rivals Scunthorpe, Rovers followed up Monday’s 2-1 win against Oldham Athletic with an emphatic display at Roots Hall.“It’s a great start to the New Year, it was a complete performance on and off the ball,” boasted the Scot.“From the fi rst minute i thought we started the game well, took control of it and it’s a really pleasing afternoon.“We got goals at good times - just before half time through (Andy) Williams again - and then two quick goals in the second half which killed the game.”Ferguson was not only satisfi ed with

his side’s points return over the festive spell but the fi rst clean sheet garnered by Doncaster since November.“I was glad we held on without conceding. We have got clean sheets in us but I couldn’t really praise individuals today as it was a really good team effort,” he said.“Utilising the squad is always going to be important at this stage of the season in terms of getting freshness in to the squad and I was very pleased with them.“The Christmas period, I set the players a target of nine points, we’ve got six and when you’ve lost the fi rst game to come away with six points after two tough away games, that’s the most pleasing performance of the lot.“I’m sure the players will have enjoyed it today as we were really good today.”

ROTHERHAM TO HONOUR DECEASED SUPPORTERSRotherham United are asking supporters to send in the names of those fans that we lost in 2015 to be remembered at the game against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday 16th January 2016.Fans wishing to have their loved ones’ names displayed on the big screen prior to the game with the Hoops should send the name they would like displayed to [email protected] with the subject titled ‘Rotherham Remembers’.We were overwhelmed with the response to this initiative last season and we’d just like to make supporters aware that any email sent will have been received, although we can’t respond to them all.The names will also be printed in the offi cial matchday programme and the deadline for all submitted names will be Monday 11th January 2016.

BLADES NEWS2015/16

2015/16MORGAN OPTS TO LEAVE BLADESSheffi eld United have reluctantly allowed Chris Morgan to leave Bramall Lane to further his career. The Blades stalwart will leave his role as Under 21s Coach to become First Team Coach to Danny Wilson at Chesterfi eld.Morgan, who fi rst joined United in the summer of 2003, leaves with United’s thanks for his service, loyalty and commitment, as well as best wishes.Nigel Adkins commented: “We wish Chris well, he is a legend at this Football Club and he will always be welcome back. This is a great opportunity for him to work closely with an experienced manager as he looks to develop his own career.”Morgan, 38, played 279 times for the Blades, scoring 15 goals. He was captain of the Club

BLADES SUPPORT ‘KICK IT OUT’ CAMPAIGNSheffi eld United demonstrated its commitment to inclusion in football by supporting the anti-discrimination organisation, ‘Kick It Out’.For the fi xture against Peterborough United at Bramall Lane, the stadium featured messages in support of ‘Kick It Out’, and a statement of support was read out by Club match day host, Gary Sinclair, both before the game and at half time.‘Kick It Out’ noise clappers were held up by ball boys during the pre-match guard of honour, and a large ‘Kick it Out’ fl ag was held up by the Club’s Supporters Liaison Offi cers in front of the pre-match players respect handshake, with another laid across the Bramall Lane End Lower seating.Concourses and the

ticket offi ce displayed ‘Kick It Out’ posters, and the Club’s social media also carried ‘Kick It Out’ messaging, as did the stadium’s big screen.Sheffi eld United’s Operations Director, Dave McCarthy, said: “Sheffi eld United has always been a Club with the community at its heart and remains on the ‘front foot’ to help rid football of discrimination.“The presence of ‘Kick It Out’ during the Peterborough game was planned a while ago, but recent events mean that the messaging displayed against Peterborough carries even greater signifi cance.“As a football club, Sheffi eld United remains committed to kicking discrimination of any kind out of football.”

when promotion to the Premiership was secured and also played 24 times in the top fl ight.Signed by Neil Warnock from Barnsley, he worked under a number of managers but a serious knee injury in 2010 forced his early retirement from the game.Under Wilson he made a smooth transition to the Club’s coaching structure and for the past couple of years has been responsible for the development of a number of young players as the lead Under 21s coach, as well as various fi rst team duties. Twice he has acted as Caretaker Manager. In the summer of 2015, over 12,000 supporters turned out to see the Blades match Newcastle United in his testimonial fi xture, in which he played the last couple of minutes.United’s Technical Board is underway with discussions for a replacement.

Nigel Adkins admitted Saturday’s home loss against fellow promotion rivals Peterborough United was a diffi cult one to take.Having seen his side equalise twice through a Billy Sharp penalty and a Jack Baldwin own-goal, United were caught out by a solo effort West Ham loanee Martin Samuelsen which saw Posh snatch all three points and the Blades boss wasn’t happy with the Blades defending. He remarked: “There was a fantastic atmosphere inside Bramall Lane, but we are frustrated to have lost the game in the manner we did.“Our preparation told us about Peterborough’s threat from long-range and we conceded two goals from outside the penalty area, so that’s disappointing.“Overall our performance was very good, we moved the ball brightly, created chances and looked a threat going forward throughout the game.“Peterborough will think they have scored three excellent goals, but we have to do more

to prevent them. But we stuck in there and the supporters got right behind the players and it helped.”The Gaffer was particularly annoyed about how easily Samuelsen ghosted through his side’s defence for the game’s decisive strike, which came seconds after Baldwin had diverted Chris Basham’s effort into his own net in front of the Kop.Adkins added:”We had enough experience on the pitch to manage the game better. You are always at your most vulnerable when you have scored and the players know my thoughts on their winning goal.“When we look back on the defending for their third goal, which has come from a throw-in on the halfway line, then our players will be mortifi ed.“This defeat has taken the wind out of our sails a little because we have been building up the momentum and the game was there to be won, especially having worked so hard to get on level terms for a second time.”

THEY WERE EXCEPTIONAL

A SOLID UNITCarlos Carvalhal praised his team’s defensive unity after the Owls kicked off 2016 with a 1-0 win at Fulham.Ross Wallace scored a 35-yard screamer in the fi rst half to secure all three points for Wednesday to keep the visitors within touching distance of the play-offs.But just as pertinent was the infl uence at the back as Carvalhal explained: “When the strikers help with the defending it makes everything easier.“The defenders have less to worry about and so does the goalkeeper, today Joe Wildsmith didn’t have any problems, and the whole defence showed what they can do, like Vincent Sasso who came into the team late.“That was the Sasso I know, the one we saw today, not the one before who felt pain.“I have always said the team is more than eleven players, and we showed why that is again today.“I also want to thank our massive fans as they were amazing again, they helped the team as they do every game.“This is the expensive time, it is cold, it is raining but again they

Joe Wildsmith made his tenth appearance of the season on Saturday as Wednesday began 2016 with a 1-0 victory at Fulham.Five of those appearances have seen the Owls emerge with clean sheets and Wildsmith has paid special tribute to his team mates, after registering the most recent shutout at Craven Cottage.Following Wednesday’s impressive three-point haul in the capital, Wildsmith said:“I thought everyone put a shift in and the clean sheet was a bonus.“It’s good for me to keep a clean sheet but I’ve got to thank the defenders in front of me because they were exceptional.“The clean sheet on Saturday was testament to their hard work. They’ve made my job easier by playing like they have, so I can only thank them.”Wednesday now switch their attention to the FA Cup on Saturday as they host Fulham once again in the third round this weekend.

were incredible.”On the winning goal, the head coach said it was not important who got their name on the scoresheet, but was happy to see Wallace make his mark.Carvalhal added: “Ross’ goal was fantastic.“I was joking with him during the week about scoring this sort of goal, sometimes you get a feeling that these sort of things can happen.“I said ‘there used to be a player for Celtic about 25 years ago who scored

Heading into the game with three wins from the previous four games, Wildsmith says the squad are buoyant having bounced back from defeat at Middlesbrough.“I thought it would be a tough game going to

goals like this!’“I was joking of course but I am pleased for Ross and pleased for everyone.

“We now focus on playing Fulham again next week in the FA Cup as this is now the most important game.”

Fulham,” he said. “But coming away from the Boro game, the boys wanted to show what they’re all about.“It’s always good to begin the year well and we’ve bounced back and started it with three points.”
