This year’s conference flies under the banner of “Welcome to my World”, a theme that aims to assist the community to understand the messages, acons, dreams and choices our youth present. The conference will bring together young people, teachers, praconers from a variety of fields and academics to focus on the youth voice, community connecons, hope, self-identy and pride, and to explore and celebrate young people's strengths and potenal. In blending the varied educaonal perspecves and experiences of these groups, this conference takes a unique approach to sharing knowledge in a range of formats. I look forward to hearing and seeing the parcipaon of our students in this opportunity. Next Tuesday, Gypsy Akhyar (Year 9) and Cassie Taylor (Year 11) will present at Wellbeing in Schools Australia one day conference focusing on “All students reaching their potenal in school and life.” Our Northern Bay College Student Representave Council (SRC) model will be presented by Gypsy and Cassie, showing how students have a strong influence on the climate and culture of schools and how through school staff being able to hear and respond to the ideas of the students, beer outcomes can be achieved. Whilst our Junior campuses also run effecve SRCs, in 2015 our Learning Partner Mrs. Taryn Goss and Learning Worker Mr. Steven “Stoofa” Lewry facilitate our Goldsworthy SRC with some excellent examples of student leadership and voice emerging. CONGRATULATIONS As many of our students prepare for finals in their Winter sports, one of our Year 11 students had the opportunity to parcipate in a naonal AFL academy last week. Ben Tu’uta who commenced his studies at Northern Bay College this year, travelled to Port Adelaide as one of 30 students naonwide to parcipate in the Aboriginal AFL Academy. The program focuses not only on developing footy skills, but also on educaon outcomes with Academy players required to maintain at least a C-average grade at their schools. Port Adelaide stays in contact with players' schools for the duraon of the program to ensure they connue to meet in-school expectaons and uphold the Academy's team values outside of the football environment. The squad met on Wednesday to begin their study and training under the guidance of Port Adelaide's own Aboriginal stars Jarman Impey, Nathan Krakouer, Brendon Ah Chee and new recruit Patrick Ryder. We wish Ben great success not only within the Academy but in his endeavours at Northern Bay College and in the community. SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) INTENSIVE WORKSHOP Last week our NBC STEM select-entry, accelerated learning program saw 11 students from our Year 6-8 Learning Communies engage in a week-long workshop in Deakin University’s recently opened Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training (CADET). The students have been researching how to enhance exisng products with changes to elements such as bearings being one focus. Ulising state of the art technology such as laser cuers, the students designed and conducted experiments on a test track that they designed, cut and assembled. The test track was the largest item produced so far in CADET and enabled our students to work with Physics professors to learn about, measure and modify acceleraon, velocity and other scienfic principles. I would like to thank NBC staff Robin Smith and Sco Alldis for their passion for our STEM program and for developing such a high quality workshop with Deakin University. I would also like to extend our gratude to Jason Steinwedel from CADET for allowing our students to experience such a valuable immersion into an advanced manufacturing environment. I look forward to future learning experiences with Deakin for our STEM and other student cohorts. Year 9 Careers Straight Talk Day Year 9 Students earlier this month had the opportunity to participate in our Careers Straight talk Day held at Deakin University. Students had the opportunity to meet with and ask questions to people involved in a diverse range of careers such as Lawyers, Agricultural Scientist, Electrical Safety Engineer, Emergency Services (police, fire and ambulance), fitness instructors and make up specialists for TV and movies. The event was hosted by the Year 9 Student Leadership team with help from Steven “ Stoofa” Lewry and also involved a motivational talk from our special guest Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons. The event was made possible by the great work from the Smith Family and the NBC Careers team. Shane Thompson, Year 9 Instructional Leader

During term 3 the Year 10 ASPIRE - Pathways to University - class visited Deakin University Waurn Ponds Campus where they attended an introduction to the Medical Faculty, including a tour of the anatomy laboratory. The aspect of student life they focused on was the Medical service that is available to them as University students. In week 4 the ASPIRE students were introduced to the Deakin online environment and had their first chance to log on as 'Deakin Students' with logons and passwords. They explored a film making web site before moving on to a tour of Accommodation Services. Students were informed of when to apply for accommodation on site and the cost of renting accommodation, including all utilities. Work Experience placements need to be finalised as soon as possible. If you are one of the students without a placement please contact your mentors or if any parents are able to help with finding their child a placement, or offering one in their own business, please let Jodi Gurrie or Donna Shell know on 5224 9700.

Last week was the second Annual NBC Art Exhibit. The response from the students and families was wonderful and all the Art staff

would like to thank all students in the exhibition and the NBC community for their support. A select few students did take part in the Maths competition challenge. Well done to all who did participate it was very challenging. In Maths students are currently learning how to interpret graphs, linear relations or Mr Pythagoras before moving onto Mr SOHCAHTOA as used in Trigonometry. Please remember that bags are no longer welcome in classrooms and hats are to remain off during class times. Your college uniform shop is open for business at Goldsworthy campus and if you need some help getting a winter jumper or a pair of shorts for spring then please ask your teachers about some ways we can help you get into full school uniform.

Regards, Year 10 team Goldsworthy.

As part of the VCE Experience we recently had a presentation from members of the Australian Catholic University. The presentation focused on alternative pathways to University and the importance of continuing on with education beyond Northern Bay College. This was a good follow up to the recent VTAC and SEAS application presentations. If parents have any questions about pathways, they should contact the school and discuss with a member of the careers team.

Student Led Conferences were held last Thursday. It was a great opportunity for students to lead a discussion as to their progress in all of their subjects. Those that attended found the time worthwhile. It was expected that all students attend. If parents were unable to attend, I encourage them to contact their child's teachers and discuss their progress.

Subject Selections 11 into Year 12, 2015. We have been finalizing courses for 2016. Can parents please ensure that they return a signed form if they haven't done so already, acknowledging the program selected as well as the costs involved with the program. Programs selected are provisional at this stage and students must pass their current Year 11 studies to progress into the Year 12 program. If you have any questions, please contact the school. Falk Davis, VCE Instructional Leader

This term, VCE students have been involved in a number of exciting extra-curricular activities complementing their studies of English and developing transferable skills.

After the success of the United Nations Conference hosted by NBC in Term 2, 4 VCE students competed in the Geelong regional round of the Evatt Competition. Evatt is a national diplomacy competition which sees students act as ambassadors of an allocated country to the United Nations Security Council. Teams debate issues of international significance and negotiate support for changes they want to implement.

The NBC teams, representing Jordan and Malaysia, competed against teams from St Joseph’s College, St Ignatius College and Western Heights. Congratulations to Seira Nazar,

Masooma Nazar, Anita Qayyumi and Nabila Qayyumi, who challenged themselves to speak confidently and advocate passionately for their country’s point of view.

English as an Additional Language students recently had the opportunity to attend a talk and Q&A with Najaf Mazari, author of the Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif. Mr. Mazari shared his story of coming to Australia as a refugee and working hard to build a business and life here. He also spoke passionately about his work to provide ambulances to isolated villages in Afghanistan. Students were moved by Mr. Mazari’s story and asked thoughtful questions related to their ‘Encountering Conflict’ context study. Thank you to Danielle Parker from the fOrt for giving us this great opportunity. Timea Stan, Teacher, EAL and Humanities

VCAL Community VCAL Community—Baby project During the last couple of weeks year 11 VCAL have been a part of a teen pregnancy simulation where we had the choice on taking home a mechanical baby that cried, needed to be fed, needed to be burped, also needed to be rocked and also needed its nappy changed. We did this program because Corio has the 3rd highest teen pregnancy rate, and the teachers wanted us to know what it feels like to be a teen mum. During my time in having one of the babies (Jacob) I found that to be a teen mum it was quite hard to do everyday tasks like have a shower or eat and most of all sleep. I found I was getting 3 to 4 hours sleep a night which has shown me that being a teen mum is really hard especially if you’re a single mum doing this project is actually a real eye opener. By Cassie Taylor year 11 VCAL

Student Led Conferences Last Thursday saw a good turnout for student led conferences within our VCAL community. Students showcased their learning to all of their teachers. The VCAL students have really taken ownership over learning and the centre. Staff were impressed with the turn out and enthusiasm possessed by all involved. For those who missed it they need to take the opportunity to organise a time with their teachers at the earliest convenience.

VET Just a reminder that students in VCAL have a commitment to attend and participate in their VET subject. VET compliments the VCAL certificate. If students are not doing this they will not receive a VCAL certificate at the conclusion of the year. The only exception is if students are completing a school based apprenticeship or school based traineeship or relevant certificates. Reminder to return signed course counselling sheets. Students are reminded that their course counselling sheet is past due. VCAL students need to secure their spots for next year and ensure that they have selected their VET. If you have not sited this subject selection sheet can you please ask to see it and sign it. This cannot be processed by our timetable co-ordinator until the correct documentation has been fulfilled. Students will know what VET they are in for 2016 this year, so it is imperative that they submit this form as soon as possible. Ricki O’Shannessy, VCAL Instructional Leader

Koorie Update

Another great session was held last week at AIME (RMIT University). The strength of this program was evident when a group of our young men travelled by train to Melbourne with Mr. Massari. These students did not have any classes this day and were not expected at school. However they still wanted to participate in the AIME experience, what deadly students! Next AIME session is on 3rd September involving all year 9, 10 and 11 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Students.

ANNUAL TOUCAN APPEAL

AUGUST 2015

…….THINK OUTSIDE THE CAN! Our school will again assist with food donations this year. Every donation is important and can make it’s way on to a family’s table, which could be in your street for example. Once again we are asking for donations of some of the basic food items most families choose. Your support will really make a difference to someone within our community. Some of the items we are in need of most this year, are:-

Cereal, Crackers, Cake mix, Powdered milk, Pasta & sauce side dishes, Flour, Sugar, Foil, Clingwrap, Kitchen tidy bags, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste. Although all donations whether cans, boxes or packets are gratefully appreciated. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This week the College has a visit from the Hakuna Matata

group from Zimbabwe.

The boys from st Johns College had amazing power in the

voices and instruments and really impressed the students. There

is a concert at GPAC on Sunday and any family would be

thrilled if they could find time to buy tickets and attend.. Call

Northern Bay College was well represented in the U/16 Geelong League Best & Fairest vote count tonight. (18/08/15) Jacob Sammut-Miljevic was Runner-Up in Div 4 (great effort considering North Shore did not win many games) and Titit Nyak (North Geelong) Winning the B&F in Div 3.
