Book Week Extravaganza!BETTER BEGINNINGS STORY TIME PRESENTATION On Wednesday morning Kindergarten students and their families attended the Better Beginnings family story time presentation. Mr Asser and Mrs Knight read to an enthralled audience, promoting and encouraging the wonderful and very important experience of sharing books and stories. Better Beginnings supports parents in reading to children so that they build the early literacy skills they need to become good readers and succeed at school. Students are able to access a special range of fantastic books and resources from local Public Libraries.
Each Kindergarten child received a special gift pack which included a picture book, library bag and various activities to do with their parents and carers.
For more information and great online activities you can go to http://www.better-beginnings.com.au/
BOOKS AND A BLANKET FAMILY READING On Tuesday afternoon during Book Week Adam Road Primary School held a Books and a Blanket Family Reading Event providing the perfect opportunity for students to snuggle up and read with loved ones.
Every corner of the Library was filled with students and their families eager to read. Students were entered into a free raffle and each won a ‘Blind date with a Book”- a mystery book, wrapped in brown paper, tagged with clues.

From the Principal’s Desk
With the end of term fast approaching it is a good time to reflect on what has been achieved and reward high achievement and progress made by our students.
To involve all parents and carers in this process we will be holding an Open Night on Wednesday 20th September between 5.30 and 6.30pm. All classrooms will be open to provide students the opportunity to present and discuss the work they have been doing and the things they have learnt this term.
Students will lead this process and be prepared to answer your questions about the work they have done. This is a great way for our students to demonstrate what they have learnt. This is not the time to ask teachers about your child’s progress as there will not be time for this; also this is not a suitable setting to discuss an individual student’s progress. If you wish to do this please contact your child’s class teacher and arrange a time to meet with them.
We will also be recognising the great work done by our students at a number of other end of term events. Firstly at this Friday’s assembly we will be presenting medallions to the student in
each year level who has achieved the best results in the HaSS (Humanities and Social Sciences Learning Area). The student who has made the most progress in this learning area in each class will also receive a certificate to acknowledge their great work.
Also on Wednesday 20th September is the Grand Bazaar where our Argonauts Student’s present their term’s work in the form of their own stall at a bazaar. This year has also seen the beginning of our Reading Challenge Program where each student is encouraged to read at least four times each week. Students who have been able to achieve this for each week of the term go into the prize draw and have the opportunity of collecting some fantastic gifts. This draw will be conducted on Thursday 21st September after the lunch break.
In addition to these events our students learning a musical instrument will be participating in a band day excursion at Newton Moore Senior High School on Monday 18th September and our Junior Choir will be entertaining the residents at Elanora Villas on Thursday 21st September.

Go Cart Grand Prix
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning has been great fun this term. After reading a poem about Go Carting we decided that it would be a great idea to build our own Go Cart.
Mr Cogan built us a prototype and then we set about measuring, sawing wood, drilling holes, screwing in bolts to put our go cart together. We learnt how to burn the ends of nylon rope and twist the ends together to stop them fraying and also how to put on axles and wheels. Lots of us had a go on the sewing machine to create the racing bunting to hang over the start and finish lines and we used spray paint to finish off our “Beast”. It looked great when it was finished.
We strung up the bunting and moved the Go Carts to the starting line.
Everyone was really excited! Hannah used Mrs Cogan’s scarf as a flag and off we went! We noted that our Go Cart was much faster than the prototype and we decided it was because we had built it ourselves.
We had lots of races and loads of fun!
Thanks to Mr Cogan for his help and knowledge and thanks to Mrs Cogan for letting us do it!
We love school!

Perth Scorchers Councillor’s Corner
This fortnight the councillors have been getting people from around the school to sign our Student Councillor petition to try and get a swing back into the senior play area. If you haven’t signed it yet you can see a councillor at recess or lunchtime (look for the fluoro vests with clipboards).
Recently, we raised another $31 from selling our lollypops on Friday afternoons. All this money will go towards purchasing something that everyone in the school can enjoy.
Our “Design a Logo for the bins” competition continues. If you would like to draw a design and give it to Rani (Minister for Environment and Sustainability) she will ensure that it goes into the draw. Please make sure your name and room number are on your entry.
Science Week activities are coming up soon. The Councillors, along with students from Rooms 18 and 21, are creating some terrific backdrop boards with messages for REDUCE, REFUSE, REUSE AND RECYCLE. Look out for them on Wednesday, 13 September.
Emelia, Student Councillor August 2017
The Perth Scorchers van visited the school briefly on Tuesday morning to provide a “have a go” session before school, they also spoke to students in Year 1 to 4 about playing cricket this year. Those interested in Milo Cricket can go to Forrest Park on the 12th of October from 4.30pm to 6pm.

What can we do?
Australians consume up to 60 MILLION Fluorescent Globes
each year
Of these, only 1% are recycled
Fluorescent Globes are considered Household Hazardous Waste and can be disposed of free of charge.
Contact your local Council to find out where your nearest drop off point is.

Fluro Globes contain a small amount of Mercury. It is
important to recycle these correctly so Mercury doesn't
end up in Landfill.

OSHClub NewsBefore School / After School Care Program
Hello Adam Road Families!
What’s new at OSHClub? We have pet fish and snails! We were fortunate enough to have one of our OSHClub parents bring in some guppies and snails. We have loved watching them swim around and show off their lovely colours. This week we will be learning about our new friends and doing some fish crafts too.
This year we want to help brighten someone’s Christmas and would love your help! We have collected 2 shoe boxes so we can do Operation Christmas Child this year! All we need to do is collect a couple of things for a boy and girl aged 5 to 9. Something for them to love, wear, play with, keep them clean, have at school and something special just for them. These can be unopened packets of things like toothbrushes, empty notebooks, colouring ins, socks, small toys etc.

LIGHT THE NIGHT Now in its tenth year, Light the Night is a unique event bringing Australia’s blood cancer community together all over the country.
Those attending raise money to help give local families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support that will light the way forward.
Families and friends will come together at dusk on October 6 to carry one of three coloured lanterns relevant to their journey with blood cancer.
Today another 35 people will be told they have blood cancer. Be the light in their darkest hour. Join an event near you and reserve your lantern at lightthenight.org.au.
The Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night is taking place on October 6 at the Bunbury and Districts Power Boat Club, to help raise funds to give local families facing blood cancer the emotion and practical support that will light the way forward. We need your help with getting the WA community on board.
