Toni George joined the Royal Australian Mint in May 2016, working in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) section within the Human Resources team. As the Rehabilitation and Wellness Officer; Toni facilitates rehabilitation services, providing early intervention processes and co-ordinating the staff wellness program WellMint.

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) section is part of the Human Resources Branch that ensures high quality services such as OHS risk management advice, OHS regulatory and safety system auditing, workplace inspections, OHS incident investigations, staff wellness management and the provision of rehabilitation and early intervention services.

The WellMint program provides education and practical activities on how to live a healthy, happy and sustainable life. The program

includes seminars, stretching classes, cooking demonstrations, monthly themes and presentations. In 2019, Toni will be launching a new WellMint theme 'Plan Your Wellbeing'. The program will include seminars about healthy life tips for work and home, mastering resilience and ensuring overall happiness.

As a proud Mintie, Toni is a keen coin collector. Toni’s favourite coin is the 'With Love' 2016 $5 Fine Silver Proof Heart-Shaped coin. The beautiful design and sentiment behind the coin makes it a treasured piece in her collection.

Toni believes her role provides the opportunity to focus on her passion for helping others, sharing knowledge and creating a healthy lifestyle for Mint staff.

The word dollar comes from a very unexpected place. In this edition of From the Vault, we present a stunning 1967 restrike of a 1520 Thaler from the National Coin Collection.

The Joachimsthal Thalers and their parts (minted since 1519) were the first large or ‘gross’ Czech coins. Instead of being minted by the Czech monarch, the coins were issued by the noble family of Schlick in an attempt to add value to the silver mined in their lands. The coin created was called Joachimsthaler

Guldengrosch.

Overtime, the name was corrupted to Joachimsthalergrosch; to Joachmtalsky Groe; to Tolsky Gore; eventually to Thaler or Tolar. Thal is German for “valley”, and a Thaler is a person or a thing “from the valley”. Therefore, the coin came “from the valley of Joachim” or “St Joachim’s Valley.”

This replica of the 1520 Thaler coin is made from lead with silver plating. Historically, the origins of the design can be traced back to Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican tradition. The obverse features St. Joachim (St. James) in the centre with a shield and the legend “Stephen and his brothers, Earl of Bassano”. The reverse features a standing Lion, the Bohemia Coat of Arms, and the legend “The year 1520, Louis the First, by the grace of God King of Bohemia.”

Currently there is no currency in circulation named Thaler. Several countries acknowledge its legacy with the name for their currency – the “dollar”. In total there are twenty-three currencies named “dollar”, used in countries including Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and the United States of America.
