GOOD SAMARITAN INDUSTRIES NEWSLETTER ISSUE 13, SPRING 2018 More at MORLEY Since 2014 our team at Morley has served over 184,500 customers and sold over 601,000 items. What’s more, this has now led to the ongoing employment of nine people and 19 volunteers. Our Morley store has now expanded, making it bigger and better than ever – our new 24-hour drop off point means we can take additional donations from the local community. With a large range of clothing, bric-a-brac and furniture for sale, and with more employment, training and service opportunities for those living with a disability, why not come in and say “hi” to all the staff and grab a bargain at the same time! Our store is located at 1/32 Rudloc Road, Morley. Congratulations to our 20 staff who recently completed their Certificate II in Retail Services. While difficult at times, it was made all the more remarkable because each GSI team member persevered and passed each unit, gaining a formal qualification! To celebrate their huge achievement, a High Tea was held where everyone was presented with their certificates by our CEO, John Knowles, and Amanda Barrett, State Manager, Kirana Education. A huge thank you goes to Kirana Education for providing the training and to the Store Managers for supporting our employees through the unit and, of course, a huge well done to everyone who completed their certificate! Great job! Retail Royalty! Ben Flies HighWe have been helping Ben Latham gain experience in independent living, social skills and exploring work opportunities.

Ben briefly tried some work experience at a Good Sammy retail store and at an animal volunteer centre, however, he decided his passion is in computers and administration.

After undertaking some work experience at our GSI office, we found an opportunity with the Government Employees Superannuation Board (GESB). The rest, as they say, is history and Ben has excelled and proven himself a valuable asset to the team at GESB. He has assisted with their website review and data entry, along with many other duties. Now, the GESB team is working with Ben to provide a traineeship opportunity in their IT department next year, in the meantime, he is doing two days a week of paid work.

Ben has grown immensely in confidence and it has been a pleasure to see him flourish over the past few months. Well done Ben.

Chair’s Article This year marks our 60th Anniversary and we will celebrate this with all staff and volunteers in early October with a gift of commemorative T-shirts and morning teas throughout GSI.

In late November at Wesley Church in Perth CBD, where the GSI story started, a service is to be held where we will launch our history book to acknowledge the work of the early GSI pioneers, the Methodist Church and its later iteration the Uniting Church and all the wonderful people we assisted during that time.

The Uniting Church has a proud history of serving our community, caring for others and seeking to live faithfully and with real joy. GSI is an integral part of this history and our story reflects the Church’s ambition to make our community a better place to live.

From those early beginnings we now support hundreds of people with a disability on a daily basis through a state wide network of thirty opportunity shops, serving over one million customers a year, accepting six thousand tonnes of donations annually and employing seven hundred staff and volunteers.

This reflects GSI’s founder Reverend Ralph Sutton’s foresight when he wrote “when a dream meets a need, nothing can stop its realisation. Good Samaritan Industries is the realisation of a dream that has been so rapidly and splendidly fulfilled because as soon as it had begun it ‘rang a bell’ in the hearts of thousands.”

It was he and those early voluntary Boards of GSI, so ably led by Mr William Harwood our first executive who rallied around our first employee Bernice Moorhouse and those after her to make Western Australia a more inclusive community.

We pray that GSI can continue to make a real difference to the lives of people with a disability for decades more to come. In that sense, our history is a pathway to that future.

Trent Bartlett – Chairman

CEO’s Article It was a great pleasure to be able to attend our Uniting Church’s Synod to present GSI’s activities for the last financial year.

The Synod operates as the legal and administrative body of the Church and annually meets so representatives of congregations, agencies and Church committees can make decisions – in our case, approve our annual report.

The annual report is a historical record through which we aim to create a deeper understanding of what, why and how well we support people with disabilities in WA. It clarifies our accomplishments, milestones and goals and brings together our strategies into a cohesive whole.

If you go to our website the annual report is at the top of the News section and for those of you on our email list an electronic version has also gone out.

The future for people living with disability in WA is changing as the new National Disability Insurance Scheme rolls out, our annual report records our first steps in this area and the many positive achievements of people with a disability who rely on us as their service provider. We trust that this positivity will grow and we will be in a position to report on this ‘Good News’ as we move forward.

John Knowles – CEO

Tech Savvy 4 TeensWe are set to kick off a new innovative educational program aimed at students with disabilities who use technology in its many shapes and forms.

Tech Savvy 4 Teens was developed via feedback from younger people with disabilities that identified technology was an essential part of school, life and work. It will enable students to explore and learn about technology, the internet and software programmes in a safe and supportive environment.

The course will be run one day per week over seven weeks, for four hours a day, with topics including introduction to technology, safety and online etiquette, as well as Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The course commences in Term 4 of 2018 and continues in Terms 1 and 2 in 2019.

For further information about Tech Savvy 4 Teens please contact either Ronnie McEwan or Samantha Brown on 9463 0576.

GSI’s NDIS information SessionsDozens of family members and employees were amongst the guests who attended our recent NDIS Information sessions – the feedback following the sessions was extremely positive. Our next session is Wednesday 5th December. Sessions will commence at 10.00am, 2.30pm and 5.00pm. For more information or about how to access the NDIS please call us on 9463 0560 or 9463 0583.

Stamp of ApprovalDuring August and September, GSI’s services were independently audited by SAI Global to ensure their compliance with the National Disability Service Standards - a requirement of the Commonwealth Government. The audit concluded that our services to people with a disability were in line with the National Disability Services standards. What’s more, the overall feedback we’ve received has been extremely positive, especially from current service users and those who are no longer being supported by GSI.

And the best part? GSI has been advised that we will continue to be certified as meeting the standards. What a great result - congratulations to everyone involved!

responseIn May, Good Sammy was contacted by the Fire Investigation Analysis Unit - Built Environment Branch - for assistance with their fire analysis training.

Tim Wray, the Lead Fire Investigation Officer at the Fire and Emergency Service Department was looking to source old furniture and home appliances, such as toasters, kettles and microwaves for controlled room and office burns at their training facility.

Guess who helped out… we did with a heap of non-saleable items that would have ended up as waste. “You and the team have been incredibly helpful. Without your help, getting the furniture in a timely fashion would have been a nightmare, so we’re very grateful! We’re looking forward to an ongoing relationship with GSI in any future planned training activities.”
