FROM THE HEAD FOX
Rain, rain go away. The month ofFeb. was really not cooperative forevents. We had some good dinnerrides and many coffee meetings withthe old guys. We did get in a couple ofrides and I want to thank those wholead them.
The Fun Run is in the works. Fun bikehas volunteered to support us thisyear. I look forward to working withDana and Carol Rowley our AssistantChapter Directors and Fun run coordi-nators and Fun bike to have a greatride on October 23rd 2010. Dana willbe asking for volunteers to lead vari-ous groups needed for the Fun Run.Remember folks; this whole organiza-tion is a volunteer type. It’s real hardto get people to volunteer but onceyou do volunteer, it’s not such a badjob. And the chapter appreciates it.
We no longer have a Charity Commit-tee. We have been asked to supportFun bike in a ride to support theUSMC Air Museum at Miramar onMay 15th 2010. I agreed the chaptercould help so Fun Bike will be notify-ing me of what type of support theywill need. It’s for a good cause. Theair museum is the only one in the USfor Marine Aviation and works on do-nations only. I feel it is a great honorto be able to support such a great ser-vice organization.
By the time you read this the ride 40to Headquarters will be planned. Ar-kansa s Chapter H is sponsoring theride and plans on picking up chaptersas they wind their way from North
Carolina to Phoenix the 12th of March. They plan on getting to Phoenix the15th of March and plan to tour theheadquarters of GWRRA the 16th.Some of us plan on meeting them inPhoenix the 15th and taking the tourwith them and then the 17 th bringthem to San Diego for a visit. I plan oninviting them to our dinner ride the18th. Plan on being there to meetthem. They also plan on going toMexico. A special report will come outabout how the ride went.
Kay and I, Dana and Carol, Mike andElma attended the first Officers Train-ing Class required by GWRRA to bet-ter understand about how GWRRAoperates. It was a great class, veryinformative and the Region Directors,Anita and JR Alkire did the presenta-tion. The class is open to any memberand will be presented at District, Re-gion and Wing Ding rall ies. I wouldrecommend the class.
Keep the dirty side down and don’tforget to check the web site calendarfor ride dates.

Well lets see now – we were inaugu-rated as ACD’s in November, went tothe District Officer meeting(Bakersfield) in January, and just gotback from the “Officer CertificationProgram” (16 hrs of great information)held in Newport Beach. You know …when Ed told me that there is not awhole lot that the ACD does … I actu-ally believed him.
During these meetings I got to learnthe important stuff of GWRRA likesquirt gun target practice with targetssuch as the famous “twins” and Carol’sderriere, how to laugh the hardest I’velaughed in decades, and of coursethe inner workings of GWRRA.
I’ve got to hand it to Bill & Rene John-son, our new District Directors, whodidn’t miss a beat up at the podiumwhile our table (Chapter CA1F) andthe next table (Chapter CA1A – Lan-caster) were having WWII with thesquirt guns. Out of the 25+ Chaptersattending we had to be the worst (thatmeans the most “funnest”) table there.
This was my first business officer’smeeting and I can see how theseyearly meetings could be down rightboring. All they talk about is businessstuff. But yet … I learned quite a lot,had the time of my life, and am actu-ally looking forward to going to nextyears officers meeting.
What I actually experienced was oneof the most important words inGWRRA. And that word is …. FUN.That’s right … FUN.
I know business stuff like Rider Edu-cation, officer responsibil ities, proce-dures, protocol, and all the other busi-
ness stuff is important but it meansabsolutely nothing if we aren’t havingFUN.
Bill & Rene – thanks so much forturning a ho-hum humdrum no frillslog sleeping bunny slope snoozemaster business meeting into a FUNand knowledgeable event.
How do we translate that back intoour Chapter? Are our ChapterBreakfast’s FUN? How about theOld Guy’s Ride … is it FUN. Howabout all the weekend rides, aftermeeting rides, dinner rides, visitingchapter rides, desert rides, mountainrides, coastal rides, etc. Are theserides FUN. How about the seminars,PLP and during the summer monthshow about the Drive-in movies, BudSwartwood’s Tuesday coffee nights, and don’t forget the all out champion-ship miniature golf tournaments ….are they FUN?
We hope they are and if they aren’twe would like to know how you feel.Is there something that you think ismissing? Do we need a bowlingleague? How about a ladies lunch-eon day, or a South Bay coffee night,or maybe a Sunday night ice creamrun. Those sound FUN to me. Iwould like to see a lot of impromptuget-togethers just for the FUN of it. Ifyou want to do something spur of themoment and it doesn’t conflict withanything else on the calendar ….Just do it. Put it out on the email and

Hi Everyone
We are Dana and Carol Rowley, theACD’S and Couple of the year for2010.
Dana: Carol and I joined GWRRA inDecember of 2007. I had bought thewing that previous February. My pre-vious bike was a Honda CB 125 backin college. I had kept my motorcyclelicense current for 29 years before Icould afford to get the bike Iwanted. We had the wing about 2weeks before we took off on our firsttrip to New Mexico. I didn't care howbig the bike was I just wanted to ride. Not long after joining we started ourroles in Membership and Chapterstore. While undertaking these newresponsibilities, we were in the middleof adding on to our house, which con-tinues still. In December 2009 westepped up to even more as theACD’s of Chapter F, and were alsochosen to be your COY’S. We arehonored to have been chosen.
I was born in Vancouver, Washington, raised here in San Diego, graduatedfrom San Diego High School (GoCavers) and went to City College. Iended up moving to Portland, ORwhen I was 19. At 21, I met Carol atDenny’s where I was a cook and shewas a server. She was the social but-terfly, while I preferred to stay out ofthe lime light. She always seemed tobe so busy. I had to quit my job to geta date with her. Well it would have
seemed that way, but I was quitting, and she asked me out to go horse-back riding. I found out later that shehad wanted it to be just us, but otherfriends joined us on the horsebackride. As the story goes…. We begandating and I finally asked her tomarry me. Got married at 23, Had 4kids at 28, Had a landscaping busi-ness until I was 38. When thatended I started working in the ce-ramic tile trade. Eventually movedfrom the field into the office where Iam now a commercial ceramic ti leand stone estimator for SunstateTile.
Carol: I was born and raised in Mis-souri. After graduating High Schoolin a class of 20 and working a coupleof years at Rival Manufacturing Plantmaking crock pots, I left for PortlandOregon and worked at Denny’s res-taurant where I met Dana. We soonbecame friends, and before long webecame a couple. It was a kind ofopposites attract since I was intoDisco Dancing, dance contests, andbeing the socialite. I wasn’t surewhat to make of him except that wealso had a lot in common. After 9months of being just friends, westarted dating. We “dated” for about9 months, then, he proposed to me.We were married in March of 1981,on a “Shoestring Budget” since wewere both back at Denny’s. Beforelong we had our first child (Sonja, who is now married and has given usour first Grandchild, Shaelyn).

DD Review,
Well gang, we’re off and run-ning, and what an aggressivestart we are having. With theOfficers Certification Program(OCP) just kicking off, and theMascot games coming into fullswing, everyone seems to bevery busy even in this very wetwinter we are having. This is agreat time to get your bike andbody into shape for the upcom-ing riding season which is justaround the corner. But it lookslike a lot of you are already“out and about”.
How is the Mascot game goingyou ask? All I can say is WOW.I had no idea they would comeback to life this strong - thisfast. I have seen severalphoto’s of captures and readmany newsletter articles thatindicate your having some funwith it, and thats what its allabout. I’ve even heard onechapter bragging about havingalready collecting 5 mascots, and we are still in the firstmonth of the game. Its amaz-
ing how a little stuffed animalcan bring so many friends to-gether. What better way tospend a cold wet winter week-end than to go visit a sisterchapter and share a cup of cof-fee and some laughs withthem. Add some braggingrights and you have the start ofa great riding season. If youwere worried about not havinganything to do this year, justcheck out any of the GWRRAcalendars out there, and jumpin on a ride.
While I’m at it, I want to askyou to keep your eyes open forthose crazy folk wearing therust colored shirts at yourchapter events. They are yourDistrict representatives that aredoing a great job supportingour chapters across the state. Most wear many hats as Chap-ter and District staff, somewear chapter and district colorsas they do. All do it becausewe love our California family.

They are your educators, treasurers, COY/IOY rep’s, and train-ers, all doing what they do just to share the GWRRA motto. Be-sides, we’re having a blast doing it.
At a recent COY/IOY presentation at CA2W, I was honored to sitamongst members from 4 different chapters all attempting tosteal their Mascot (talk about getting friends together on a coldwet Saturday...). As I was helping count up the points to see whowon, I noted that there were 18 District staff members present.Had we been playing the Mascot game, we would have easilytaken all Mascots. I mention this just to let you know that eventhough Rene & I may not be able to attend every chapter event, you can bet we will be well represented by one of our very dedi-cated staff members.
Until next time, “Hang on - we’re going for a ride”.

The Education CornerRiding season is upon us. So when wasthe last time you looked at your Owner’sManual? More specifically, when did youlast look at the maintenance schedule inyour Owner’s Manual? I just pulled mineout of the saddle bag. I think I saw somemoths fly. All joking aside, it showssome interesting stuff. We have 117,000miles on our 2004 GL1800A. We did notride as much last year as in prior years, but it was still 14,000 miles. There is alot of stuff for me to inspect, clean, adjust, change, and lubricate at lease twice in16,000 miles. I do that, I also change myoil and oil filter about twice as often asthe schedule requires. Why, you ask?Elma and I have an agreem ent. Mommadon’t push.
It may be overkill to do some of thesemaintenance items every 4,000 or 8,000miles, particularly since our weather is sogood. I strongly believe that every one ofour machines needs a good examinationby a qualified mechanic at lease once ayear. Please don’t tell me that you onlyride a few thousand miles a year, andtherefore don’t need to go to the shoproutinely. The low mileage on your bikemay be the exact reason you need to visitthe shop.
I know a few members in the chapter thatare very confidant about their own me-chanical abilities but they still take thebike to be professionally serviced once ayear or certainly every two years. Whyare they called professionals anyway? You may know your bike well. The shop
Chapter EducatorMike & Elma Maury
has worked on dozens of bikes like yours, this week. They will see things long be-fore those things become a problem. Doyou know just how much free play thereshould be in the throttle cable? Howabout the clutch or break controls? Idon’t, but my mechanic does.
So take a look at your maintenance sched-ule and compare it to when your bike waslast looked at by a professional mechanic. Our riding season is coming quickly. Beprepared for it and be safe.

There were many timesDana took the kids to work with himas well. (Continued from page 8) rage and the ground clearance is lim-ited(2.5") if you install the Motor Trikefloorboards but that just means youtake curbs and speed bumps at anangle. Not a big problem. We cankeep up with any 2-wheeled Goldwinggoing up or down mountain roads. Weget 36MPG5 - No6 - Motor Trike.7 - No. I am very happy.8 - Wish I had done it sooner. Alsospring for the floorboards if your com-pany has them (Motor Trike callsthem Aquashields.) Pricy but wellworth it. I took off the foot pegs andnow have lots of room to move myfeet on the floorboards - much morerelaxing. Also, don't wait to convert it. Youwon't regret it. As my dealer, South-west Trikes in Phoenix says, "Trike it.You'll like it." We have seen co-ridersin our club who had stopped ridingwith their husbands on their 2-wheelerstart riding again once they convertedto a trike. So do it for your spouse ifnot for yourself.

Hi Chapter Directors,
I’m sending some additional information on our upcoming Rally in the Valley. As you may know, the theme this time for the banquet is “Our High SchoolDays” and we are planning a sock hop atmosphere. We encourage you to dressas you would have back in your high school days. With that in mind, we arealso planning on posting a collage of high school photos where members cansee if they can identify their GW friends. So please encourage your membersto send in a black and white photo from their high school years for the posters.Have them be sure to include their name and chapter with the photo and theycan be sent directly to me. This should be a lot of fun.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
