Dear Parents and Caregivers, My sincere apologies for the delay in distributing our school newsletter this week. Again, we have had a number of network difficulties which has prevented us from sending it out sooner. Choir – During the last fortnight our school choir has performed at a matinee and two evening concerts as part of the Upper Blue Mountains Music Festival. Well done on your outstanding behaviour and beautiful singing at these events. K-2 Excursion – Students in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two enjoyed an excursion to Penrith Lakes on Tuesday and Wednesday. I have heard many exciting recounts of the days' events from students AND staff. Thanks to Miss Greer for organising this activity. Music Count Us In – I was so proud of Lawson students when we dialled in to participate in this singing activity last week. Although we faced some technical difficulties on the day, students took part with enthusiasm. It was also lovely to have students perform the song for parents and friends at Friday's assembly. Kindergarten Orientation – Our first two Kindy transition sessions have been a huge success, with our third session taking place on Wednesday 13 November. Parents are invited to join Liz Smith from MoCS, for a healthy lunchbox session, where show bags and handy hints will be provided to all who attend. Talent Quest – Please remind your children that talent quest items need to be submitted by Tuesday 12 November for approval, should they wish to take part in this annual event. 125 Year Celebrations – Our program has been finalised for the upcoming commemorative celebrations and is included in this week's newsletter. Students and staff are looking forward to celebrating the rich history of Lawson Public School. Trivia Night – If you wish to join us on Friday 29 November, please make sure you purchase your tickets from the school office asap! We have secured some fantastic prizes to hand out on the night, including prizes for 'Best Dressed Table' and lucky door prizes! Proceeds will go towards purchasing laptops for our school laptop trolley. SRC News – The SRC ran a mufti day fundraiser to support victims of recent bush fires. Thanks to the generosity of our school community, we raised a total of $209.95. The SRC also coordinated a Noodle Fundraiser to support the 'Walk for Winmalee', which is in aid of purchasing resources for students at Winmalee and Ellison Public Schools, as well as Winmalee High School. Again, the generosity of the Lawson community, $216.40 was raised. Love Lawson Festival – Come along and join in the fun on the weekend of 15 November, as the Lawson community comes together to celebrate this great little village! Students from Lawson Public School will perform in the band, choir and dance groups on Saturday 15 November. next p&c meeting - AGM Date? Wednesday, 20th November 2013

Time? 7pm (please note the earlier starting time)

Where? Community Hub Room

The AGM is a great opportunity to be involved with planning for the coming year, and find out more about how the P&C operates. Please come along to find out how you may be able to help support our children’s education through the P&C. This is also the final P&C meeting for 2013.

magpie markets Our next markets are on Sunday, 17th November. This is also the weekend for the Love Lawson Festival, so the markets should be bigger and busier than usual.

This means, even more than ever, we will need plenty of volunteer helpers on the BBQ and around the school. The classes on the roster for this month are 6H and 1H. However, could we please also ask for help from the classes who were scheduled on last weekend, but weren’t able to help as the markets were cancelled. These classes are 3/4H, SU1 and SU2. If your children are in any of these 5 classes, please let your class rep know what time you can help. If we have lots of volunteers, you will only need to help for an hour.

uniform shop With our preschool friends starting Kindy orientation last week, there have been a lot of new orders for uniforms, and we are going through stock on some items quickly. If you need any uniform items, please visit us between 8.30-9.30am on Wednesday, or fill in an order form and return it to the office with correct money or cheque. We will do our best to fill your order promptly.

p&cnews thank you To our class reps for the wonderful job you are doing communicating with the families from your class. There has been a lot of information to go out recently, and we appreciate the great job you do keeping us informed.

artist in residence In the week beginning 2nd December, we will be joined by our second artist in residence for 2013. Local artist Jane Lennon will work with all students in class groups. She specializes in sculpture made from recyclable materials such as plastic and paper pulp. Every student will learn how to produce a bird figurine made from a plastic recyclables, paper pulp and paint. A great opportunity for our children to learn how to up-cycle creatively! Keep an eye out for more information.

working bee Thank you SO much to all the wonderful gardeners who turned up to help at our working bee last Sunday. A huge amount of mulch was moved, weeds were pulled and plants planted. The gardens are looking beautiful and fresh, ready for our anniversary celebrations later this month. Thank you to the following people, who were part of the fabulous working bee team:

Simon, Neige, Ruby, Thomas and Oscar Manwaring; Tanya, Hamish, Saxon, Bailey and Marcus Clark; Chantal Beltran; Jane Townsend and Finn Perdicaris; Vivian, Dan and Brodie McCallum; Steve and John McLearie; Jane Meiklejohn, Steve and Annie McDonald; Shauna and Jordan Cohn; Kurtis Rule; Andrew and Iggy Warrilow; Ruth, Caelan and Silas Meyer; Anja, Craig and Jessica Kennedy.

We hope to finish the final few jobs around the grounds on Sunday 24th November with another, smaller working bee. Please keep an eye out in the next newsletter and messages from your class reps for further details.

On Friday 18 October, the NSW government appointed Phil Koperberg to the position of Blue Mountains Bushfire Recovery Coordinator. He will be providing regular updates to the community about the progress of the recovery efforts and drawing your attention to current safety and practical operational issues.

UPDATE #5 from Phil Koperberg Blue Mountains Bushfire Recovery 6 November 2013 Dear resident, I’d  like  to  take  a  moment  to  thank  you  for  your  patience  and  understanding  and  reiterate  the  Recovery  Committee’s  commitment  to  assisting you, with the support and information most important to you and your family, in the rebuilding of your life and home. I’d  also  like  to  acknowledge  the  coordinated  efforts  of  NSW  Public  Works,  NSW  Rural Fire Service, NSW State Emergency Service and the Australian Defence Force in assisting in the ‘make  safe’  process  for  both  asbestos  contaminated  properties  and  those  with  structural  safety hazards such as leaning walls and unsafe trees. The NSW State Emergency Service has so far deployed over 160 volunteers to assess and cut down fire damaged trees. I would like to thank the NSW State Emergency Service whose ongoing assistance and support in the bushfire recovery effort is greatly appreciated by the Recovery Committee and the Blue Mountains community. The rebuilding process and new standards compliance Blue Mountains City Council is currently working closely with the NSW Rural Fire Service to maximise bush fire safety for rebuilt homes and other structures, considering current planning and bushfire protection standards and policies. They are committed to fast tracking the rebuilding process. Being part of those discussions, I can say at this point that although the new building standards will not legally prevent any fire-affected property owners from rebuilding on their block, new compliance standards means rebuilding costs may be higher. The NSW Rural Fire Service in conjunction with Council have begun assessments of all properties with the view to having a clearer picture for property owners as part of the information evening on Thursday November 14.    You’ll  find  information  about  this  and  the  Insurance  Council’s  event  on  November  12  overleaf  or  visit  the  website.   Phil Koperberg, Blue Mountains Bushfire Recovery Coordinator
