Alone in his tiny boat off the coast of Barbados, a naked and skinny young man from Surrey called Andrew Brown achieved one of the great feats of human endurance on Saturday. After 3,000 miles of pain and suffering on the open sea, he became the fastest man ever to row across the Atlantic on his own. But as he approached the end, the toughest rowing race in the world had one more twist to offer, and it was almost unbearably cruel: a sprint finish. Three miles ahead of him, out of sight in the swell, were another couple of Englishmen, Toby Iles and Nick Moore. They had also been battling the wind, the rain and the heaving seas for more than 40 days and nights as part of the Talisker Atlantic Challenge. Speaking to reporters upon their return to the UK, Hull FC direc- tor of rugby Shaun McRae says the club’s facilities at their ‘warm- weather camp’ in Tenerife are the best he’s ever seen. Peter Gentle has already hailed the training week as the most sig- nificant of pre-season as he fine tunes his side for the Super League opener against Warrington in less than a month’s time. The lads arrived on the island on Sunday 8 January and hav- ing joined the squad for the week, McRae says he’s was impressed with the quality of training. “So far it’s all been going very well. The fa- cilities are as good as I have ever seen on any camp before,” McRae said. “The training pitch is like playing on a carpet, it’s perfect, the weather has been great and the hotel too, so we couldn’t be happier. “The players know they are out here to work hard and that’s exactly what they are doing. They’ve done a lot of team work, a lot of combi- nations and working on plays and they’ve looked very good.” As well as double training ses- sions in Costa Adeje, the players are being given video analysis ses- sions and individual coaching. However, sadly for the lads it was all work and no play during their visit with the team’s head coach having put an alcohol ban on everyone for the trip. The first evening of the camp was spent discussing the season’s aims and objectives as a group. “We took the opportunity to bring the group together and for myself and Peter to give a talk,” said McRae. “I spoke about the expectations of the new board and the changes that have taken place over the past few months. “Peter spoke about the week and his expectations, while also touch- ing on the season ahead too.
