The finals dates for this year are confirmed with Semi -Finals (top 4 finalists) being played on the 5 th September. The grand final will be held on the 12 th September. The venues have not been announced. I have been asked if Eltham would host finals this year. Policy Developed January 2013 by David Griffiths,

Junior Coordinator

Hi everyone,

I do not think that a day goes by without some news item, good or bad, involving one form or another of social media. I suspect nobody could have predicted how widespread and pervasive the use of the various social media platforms would become, impacting on every aspect of society. Indeed, Eltham RUFC has embraced these platforms, especially Facebook, to enhance communication across our club membership, inclusive of parents, players, supporters and friends alike. From a club perspective, we recognise that with such technology there comes a responsibility with its use, especially where it involves our club. We as a club strive to provide a supportive, safe and respectful environment for learning and playing rugby. This extends beyond what happens on the field to embrace the behaviour of team officials, parents and friends, as well as the players themselves. Our club's Code of Conduct clearly states this. It is important to emphasise that where there are issues or grievances that arise out of club-sanctioned events such as games, no matter how well-intentioned the motive, it is inappropriate to attempt to redress the issue in question by unsanctioned, independent posts on social media that run the risk of damaging the profile and reputation of our club. The course of action should be direct contact with the Director of Rugby, Junior Co-ordinator or me. We will then take up the matter on the club’s behalf. Eltham RUFC does in fact have a social media policy that has been reprinted below from p.20 of our club handbook. I ask that each and every member of our club abide by these directions.

Best wishes for the rest of the season,

Tim Adams

Eltham 35 vs.5 Ballarat

Saturday 4 July15 at ERUFC

Eltham 35 Ballarat 5

Eltham RUFC, Saturday 4 July

With three teams – Eltham, Ballarat and Monash – in the hunt to secure fourth spot, the match-up between Ballarat and Eltham at Bridge St carried extra significance with only a handful of matches to go before the end of the regular season. The locals on the hill had barely time to wrap their gums, well, certainly those without teeth, around a refreshing beverage before Eltham were up 12-0, with the first try resulting from a side-stepping run by Tye Malone. Moments later, Jacob Carter raced down the sideline, sending an audacious over-the-shoulder pass as he was bundled into touch that was picked up by Darren Macleod who crossed to give Eltham a 12 point lead with the conversion. Ballarat responded, and went close with a chip kick into the Eltham in-goal area following a sweeping backline movement. What followed was a prolonged passage of play that found Eltham pinned down in their own half, with Ballarat enjoying a glut of possession However, the locals’ defence held, led by Peter Maddalena and Josh Davis, and featuring one particular big hit by Amir Samuel. Then, in probably the best passage of play on the day, Eltham launched a counter-attack from 5 metres out from their own line. With Aaron Ward chiming in, and Tye handling twice in a movement that saw 6 players involved, Eltham were only denied by a disputed call for a forward pass. A lineout, a driving maul, a break by Mark Southwood….. and another try denied for a forward pass. After Alex Steel cut through (think about it) only to have Peter Maddalena held up over the line, it was Southy who finally crossed for a try after good lead-up play by the forwards through several pick-and-

drives. Eltham 17-0 at the break.

The start of the second half saw hostilities resume between Josh Davis and his opposite number, soft turnovers and Eltham under pressure. An early highlight of the proceedings was an inspired performance by Pete “the actor” Maddalena (formerly known as “rulebook”), whose impression of a strangled swan was enough to convince the referee that indeed the whistle should be blown…surprisingly, not for overacting. On the back of a couple of penalties, Ballarat managed to pick up field position and cross for their first try to close the lead to 12 points. There was plenty of niggle from both sides, with the sporadic flare-up including one occasion involving the mild-mannered Mr. Steel and his accomplice, Sean Adams, although nothing nastier than a missed trip was worth detailing. Aaron was certainly enjoying the freedom of launching attacking plays from fullback, breaking through from a scrum win to give Eltham good field position, allowing Jacob Ngatai-Carter to grab three points from a subsequent penalty 35 metres out. Again, it was the ever-present Mr. Ward who fielded a kick, making ground up-field before releasing the known speedsters Southwood and Jurgens loose with the ball. A couple of quick passes and Te Rimene was over to give Eltham a 25-5 lead. Desperate for a four try bonus point, and aided by a number of penalties, Eltham went close on a couple of occasions before Tye fielded a kick and strolled through to score, thereby provoking the ire of a certain opposition player who decided a shove in the face was what required, resulting in a red card, a 10 point try and an early end to the match. A good win over an opponent in the hunt for the fourth spot occupied by Eltham. Tim

Melbourne 18 vs 18 Eltham B Romanis Reserve, Prahran, 11 July 2015 There is always an element of trepidation when travelling to Romanis Reserve (Prahran) – and it has nothing to do with the prospect of playing Melbourne. Rather, it is more the prospect of actually finding a car park, and avoiding the attention of a peculiarly overzealous species of parking inspector. You can imagine the collective surprise of the band of Eltham nomads when we arrived to find not only car parks aplenty, but an apparent absence of grey ghosts. The fact that the temperature then proceeded to drop 5oC and the heavens opened up did little to dampen (I know, A. Gilbert would be proud) our mood.

A final score-line of 18-18 suggests a close-fought match, but to be fair to all concerned this was a match that Eltham dominated for much of the game. Indeed, if it were not for dropped passes (with the line open), curious refereeing decisions and poor option-taking, Eltham might well have had another 15 or more points on the opposition. That said, Melbourne also let a couple of chances slip. A great defensive effort early in the match by the Eltham lads held Melbourne at bay, limiting the early scoring to an exchange of penalties. It was then that Will Hiser produced an individual piece of rugby “magic”, taking a pass well inside in his own half and setting off on a looping run, ball held in front with both hands (note: rugby league style), confusing his opponents before letting loose with a cross-field kick (confusing his coach, I suspect). The ball bounced in the in-goal area, eluding the clutches of at least one Melbourne player before Will arrived to steal the try. A second Eltham try to Petrus Jurgens gave a score-line of 13-10 to Eltham at the break.

The second half opened with Eltham dominating possession and field position, with Aaron Ward making a break before a dropped pass denied Eltham a scoring chance. Aaron popped up again from a quick lineout to set Alex (I’m not the …. sibling) Steel off on a 40 metre dash, eluding several defenders to go over and give Eltham an 18-10 lead. Shortly after, Tye Malone ran on to a great pass, splitting the defence only to be stripped off the ball on the line (although the ball did go backwards, he did manage to regather and put it over the line….try?). This was the pattern of the match for much of the second half – great defence coupled with strong attacking play by Eltham involving multiple phases. Too often, however, players did not look to where the support players were lined out, getting isolated and turning over the ball. With 10 minutes to go Melbourne regained their composure and then promptly camped in the Eltham half, aided by a string a penalties. And by string I mean 7, 8, 9 in a row. Three or four penalties in, with the Eltham defence holding against the onslaught, Melbourne opted for a penalty goal, perhaps feeling that they would be back down that end of the ground soon enough if the match followed the course it was taking. Sure enough, the familiar sight of Melbourne camped on and inside the Eltham 22 metre line was again upon us, accompanied by the familiar blast of the whistle and the arm extended toward the Malvern Road end of the ground. With full-time looming, Melbourne broke through to score out wide, making it a bit too hard to convert, giving a final score of 18-18. A match that was so pleasing for Eltham from many angles, but nonetheless frustrating given what might have been. Tim Adams

Wyndham 3 vs 41 Eltham A

Mossfiel Reserve, Saturday 11 July

Wyndham Rhinos are always a tough opposition and true to form they immediately attacked the Eltham line ; 3 minutes from kick off they were awarded a penalty from an Eltham knock on near their goal line. From that point onwards traffic reversed. Aaron Hall was unfortunate to have an “almost try” dis-allowed, and just 2 minutes later Josh Paver put down the ball to capture that briefly elusive 5 points.

A misplaced kick from Wyndham enabled Eltham’s own powerhouse Michael Gima to gather up the ball at speed and place the ball neatly behind Wyndham’s goal line. This was followed by a perfectly placed conversion by our top point scorer Tony Keach. Score 3-12. (at 27 minutes).

Wyndham fought back and without some good defensive work by lock James Hansen would certainly have scored a try; but instead just a few minutes later Michael Gima was charging down the field to secure Eltham’s 3rd try .which was converted neatly by Tony. Score 3-19 (at 33 minutes)

Before the sparse number of Eltham supporters could catch their breath young Brad Graf was ripping through the try line. Score 3-24 (at 37 minutes).

Half time approached as the ball passed from Jimmy to Brad to Tony. to Michael G and to team veteran, Isaac Haimona, who dived between the posts. Tony slotted the ball above the bar for another 2 points. Score 3-31 (at half time)

The action resumed and Wyndham seemed resolved to bring the game to Eltham. Our team was soon recharged with the fresh legs

of Tank and Riley replacing Tom and Mark in the front row, and Norton Fenton took on Tony’s kicking duties. Mikey Weihipeihana demonstrated with a lengthy run with the ball that he had plenty of gas in his tank as did Josh Paver when his dancing feet mesmerised a Wyndham player into a penalty and a referee warning for offside play.

A big tackle from Norton, popped up the ball to Marika and good hands from Isaac to Tank, led to a Josh Guy try. Score 3-36 (at 65 minutes)

Eltham pushed forward again and were rewarded with a 5m lineout, Wyndham tried to clear the ball but found Marika who fed the ball to Michael G for his 3rd try. Score 3-41 (73 minutes).

The game grumbled on with a highlight being an intercept by Brad, and flowing passes to Isaac, Josh Guy and Brad. Despite the score Wyndham continued to physically challenge Eltham up to the final whistle.
