COGHILL AT THE DOUBLE
The twice-a-year sortie to the far north is popular with the sprint community and the latter of the two meetings was no exception with entrants coming from all over Scotland. There was also a party over from Ireland with some very interesting machinery such as a two litre Micra which won the C3 category both days.
Like most events in late summer the weather behaved itself, and while any new records were hard-earned, David Reid took the best part of three seconds off the A1 record at the longer Littleferry lay-out.
At the sharp end of the field, George Coghill Jr in his 1.4 litre Force PC held off the threat from Garry Dickson and son Danny in their shared one litre Force Blue Star. In B6 Stephen Alexander edged out Les Mutch twice but only by 0.20 and .01 of a second.
On Saturday new class records were set by David Reid in A1 and Bill Lambie Jr in B4. David was an absentee on Sunday, when Bill had to settle for second in class as Sandy Ingram lowered the B4 record at Kylestrome. Both Stephen Alexander and Les Mutch were under the B6 record on Sunday, but Les lost out by the narrowest of margins.

HILLCLIMB Sept 7 & 8
It would not surprise us at all to learn some enthusiasts may have travelled all the way to Bo’ness and did not see too much action. By the time the vehicles which lined the approach from the car park to the track entrance were given due attention, quite a bit of the action could have passed. This section of the car park was reserved for cars of character, but whose main task of the day was simply to bring die-hards to this annual feast of motoring delights. One such car to meet the eye was a very pretty Opel GT, not unlike a small Ferrari.
Once across the track in the display area even greater mouth-watering exhibits could have further delayed the trip to trackside, like some Astons, Ferraris, Marcos, etc. Probably the pick of the bunch for your editor was a Lotus Elite, like those raced by Les Leston and Jim Clark (Jazz Band leader Chris Barber owned one) but the car on display was an immaculate road car. Wonder where they found that….
A free bus ride downhill to the Paddock could have been mistaken as a journey in the Tardis as the cars which thrilled us in days gone by were to be seen everywhere. Branislav Sudjic had the oldest car competing, a 1904 five litre Brasier Gordon Bennett and he was also racing his 3.5 litre Hotchkiss from 1938. A brave man. Another two cars from before the First World War were a Vauxhall A/D Type and a better-known Vauxhall, a Prince Henry. Just before the racing came the flypast by a Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Cracking stuff…..
The Scots were out in force, from hillclimbers to rallyists, for this is rapidly becoming the place to be seen. There were also well-filled Jaguar, TR and Porsche classes leading up to the racing cars. The lovely Connaught F1 car was there but non-started and Jim Campbell’s Ferrari Berlinetta Lusso missed out on Sunday after developing a fault on the way home on Saturday.
Malcolm Wishart’s Lotus 41C Formula Atlantic which set FTD on Saturday was in fine company with a Fairley Mercury , a Buckler Mk5, the creamer Special, the George Laycock/Peter Speakman F.A.R.M. Special, Geoff Hunt’s neat Lotus 22 which won on Sunday and George Cooper’s Cooper T59, driven by son Stephen. There was an 1100cc Cooper from 1954 and Scott Goodfellow’s recently acquired 1966 Mallock Mk6 . But there was so much more, Frazer Nash, Alvis, HRG, Riley, even a Cobra. An added bonus for spectators was to see these cars being put through their paces - some may have been museum pieces but not many were spared the rod.

SCOTT MORAN REGAINS BRITISH CROWN
While the Guyson championship had been decided in favour of Jonathan Rarity at Forrestburn, the Avon Tyres British Hillclimb Championship was still in doubt. Coming to Doune, Scott Moran led after being most consistent throughout the series, but reigning Champion Trevor Willis could still retain his title.
This season however has not been totally domi-nated by the top pair and several other drivers - Wallace Menzies, Roger Moran and Jos Goodyear have won Championship run-offs, so some exciting racing was in prospect.
Unfortunately the weather gods who have smiled on us so regularly this season were in foul mood and while the four Saturday practice runs enjoyed dry conditions, Sunday was so changeable that those competing for the top honours found themselves in a bit of a lottery. Having said that, most of the class contests ran to form although the records book was never opened.
Up-and-coming youngster Alex Summers was in remarkable form and stole the limelight from the main protagonists by winning the competition proper and both of the run-offs. What a good day’s work in such a quality field!
Trevor Willis put up a brave fight, taking the runner-up spot on both sessions, but with Scott Moran’s two third places meeting the Gould driver’s target, Trevor had to relinquish his crown.
It was a bad day at the office for Wallace Menzies, making a minor error at East Brae on one run-off and not qualifying for the other, much to the disap-pointment of his many fans. As the overall class results show, it was a day for the more nimble cars.
With Jonathan Rarity an absentee, local interest fell on Garry Dickson, George Coghill Jr. and his sister Nicola Menzies. Garry did a 47.53 and opted out of a second run which gave George a chance to close on Garry for the second Scottish place and to in-crease a slender 0.19 lead over Nicola. George got down to 47.91 but Nicola’s challenge ended at Gar-den Gate which allowed Les Mutch to become fourth Scot by a mere 0.17.
Les Campbell revelled in the conditions and was only three tenths behind Steve Marr and a second clear of Keith Weeks, neither of whom could be considered as slouches.
Even allowing for the improved track towards the end of the day, special mention should be made of the impressive times set by John Morrison Sr and Scott Beattie who both won their respective classes.
So then, we saw the British Championship being settled and witnessed some fine performances but wouldn’t it have been so much better if the Scottish summer had clung on just a few days more…...
