1 PANTHER POST GREETINGSFAMILIESAND FRIENDS! LEARNER PROFILE TRAIT OF THE M ONTH - BALANCED Plates. We all have them. Not just the ones we serve food on, but the plates of our daily lives. Each day, we have a plethora of items that fill our plates, and sometimes, our plates become too full and we begin to teeter. That is when this month?s Learner Profile Trait of Balanced comes into play. As Balanced learners, we are consistently looking to find ways to find ways to enhance our emotional, intellectual, and physical selves. Think of these as the three legs of a stool that builds our identity. If we focus too much or too little on any one of the aspects, we could find ourselves out of sync and possibly tipping over. Now you? re asking, ?What can I do to make sure my stool doesn? t tip over?? Lucky for you, we have some tips on how to stay balanced. - Keep and monitor your schedule Make sure you? re creating time to help supply your body with the physical, emotional, and intellectual support you need! Be sure to set aside time for each of these areas in your daily and weekly schedules. - Keep an eye on what you? re taking in Do you find yourself sitting in front of the TV for hours on end? Are you always reading the same genre of books? Do the same foods end up on your plate day in and day out? Recognizing that some of our habits fall into routines could be the first step in finding balance. Aim for variety - it may be cliche, but it is the spice of life! - Take time to turn off Whether it is always being connected to social media or always connected to our work, it is extremely important to take some time and turn off the demands of the outside world. Finding moments to simply take a breath and focus on your inner well being are essential to achieving balance. Have a balanced week! GRA DE LEVEL NEWS

6TH GRADE - LEARNING ABOUT PROBABILITY

7TH GRADE - WINTER WELLNESS FOR ALL

The week in Math 5 we are learning about probability. We will be discussing how to calculate theoretical probability and how to measure the likelihood of an event happening, and how to make predictions using experimental probability. We will be discussing real life situations where

we see probability, picking a certain card from the deck, rolling die or spinning a spinner while playing a board game, flipping a coin, or sports statistics like batting average or free throw percentage tell us how likely something is to happen.

Another real life situation you can talk about with your child is the weather, for example how likely is it to snow if there is a 30% chance?

8TH GRADE - FORGET THE QUAN - IT'S QUADRATICSWe are beginning one of the best units in Intermediate Algebra, Quadratics!!! This unit is one of my favorites because it has real world applications ranging from sports to science to nature. I encourage you to find parabolas in your daily life, just look for the u shape. This week we have worked on identifying special features of the parabola like the vertex and axis of symmetry by using algebraic formulas and visually from a graph. We will work on solving quadratic equations using five different methods in this unit that will incorporate important 6th grade skills like finding factors and using fractions, as well as more intensive algebra formulas like the famous Quadratic Formula. Time to dust off those algebra skills parents and let 's practice together!

With winter seeming to be never ending this year we must find some way to combat cabin fever. For PE this quarter that includes a floor hockey unit culminating in a day of playing boot hockey outside and a Friday Fitness for 6 graders sledding on our Kenny Park hill. Another way to get out an enjoy and embrace the Minnesota winter is to walk to school on Winter Walk Day Wednesday, March 13th. All students that walk to school on this day --whether regular, occasional, or even first timers-- will receive an I WALKED sticker and be entered into a drawing for great prizes. Usually drive? Park away from the school and walk from there. Can't walk to school? Minneapolis Parks have FREE ICE SKATING at 25 parks citywide, many with warming houses and FREE LOANER SKATES. Hopefully winter won't be too much longer but while it is here let 's make the most of it and get out to celebrate Minnesota in all seasons.

THE PTA CORNERTHE ANTHONY PTA NEEDS YOUThe Anthony PTA is seeking candidates to join the 2019/2020 Board. Depending on your interests, open positions you could consider include meeting coordinator, co-president, secretary, co-treasurer, co-volunteer coordinator and fundraising chair.

Joining the Board will allow you to be more connected to your child's school and introduce you to new parents as we strive to have all three feeder elementary schools represented on the Board.

For more information, contact current co-president Kai Gudmestad at [email protected].

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT PUBLIC PTA MEETING

The last public PTA meeting for the year will be Wednesday, May 1 at 10:15 a.m. in the auditorium. This meeting will immediately follow the Asian Family Involvement Day morning activities. We'd love to see you there!

BE A HOST FAMILY FOR OUR AMITY PROGRAM!Madame Miller is looking for an interested parent to serve as parent coordinator next year to assist staff in running the Amity Program within the school. This international program brings two foreign native language speakers to the school to

provide classroom assistance to our language teachers and to enrich our children's learning experience. You are probably very familiar with our current "Amities" who hail from France and Spain. A job description and more information is available from Mme. Miller ([email protected]).

IT'S TIME FOR AVID FAMILY NIGHT

PLANNING FOR OUR 2019-2020 AMITY INTERNSWe are in t he process of int erview ing Am it y Int erns for t he next school year ! In order t o cont inue t h is program , we are request ing parent volunt eers for a few posit ions:

Am it y program coordinat or : This person (or people) will be the main contact for both interns. You will support the interns with aspects outside of the school. This is NOT a host family position.

Host Fam ilies: We are hosting 2 Amity interns, both female, one from Spain and one from France. Both are 22 years old. We need to find 2 host families per intern (4 families total). Host families are not required to have a student at Anthony!

Aunt and Uncle Fam ilies: For each intern, we would like to have a year-long Aunt/Uncle family to be a secondary support for the intern. This is a flexible position, but ideally would host the intern for evening dinner or activity once a week.

Please contact Liz Miller at [email protected] if you are interested and would like more details.

We need these positions in place by April 1 in order to continue with the program.

Thank you for supporting the World Language Department at Anthony Middle School!
