EXPATRIATESMAGAZINE

June is traditionally a busy month in France for social and cultural activities. Schools hold their end of year kermess-es, associations present their galas, towns organise various communal fêtes, and the whole country enjoys the annual Fête de la Musique to celebrate the sum-mer solstice on June 21st.

This year there is the added bonus of be-ing here for the Euro 2016 which kicks off on 10th June. You can be sure that,

as host to the event, Paris will be focusing on football for the next month or so. The fan zone at the Eiffel Tower is one unique way to enjoy the matches, on the giant television screen installed just for the occasion (see page 6). There are also various demonstrations and workshops being held by local clubs and football aficionados throughout the capital and surrounding suburbs.

Even if you are not a fan of the game, the international nature of Euro 2016 makes it a great means to create interaction between the different nationalities living here. Companies may be holding sweepstakes for their employees, and clubs and bars having themed evenings for the different matches being played. (You will find a list of the fixtures on page 25.) Whatever the idea, it is an excellent opportunity for cultural interaction and exchange, and a chance to join in the inevitable post-match debates with our French hosts.

Enjoy all that France and Paris has to offer this month, and may the best team win!

On 25th May newly refur-bished trains, decorated with scenes from Ver-sailles, began operating on the RER C line link-ing Paris with Louis XVI’s iconic palace. Building on the success of the first five Versailles-themed trains, inaugurated four years ago, SNCF Transil-ien, STIF and the Palace, Museum and National Estate of Versailles have joined forces to cre-ate coaches featuring scenes from this master-piece of French Baroque art.

TRAIN MAKEOVER

LEFT TURNS FOR CYCLISTS The experiment of new cyclist road signs in Sep-tember 2015 allowing cy-clists to turn left at traffic lights is being extended. Tests are currently un-derway at selected traffic lights across Paris allow-ing cyclists to turn left. The behaviour of all users (cars, pedestrians and cyclists) will be studied. If the results are conclusive, the possibility of allowing bikes to cross at red lights will be considered.

The city has developed a remodelling scheme for sev-en different locations that will transform car-packed roads and intersections into areas that can be enjoyed by cyclists and pedestrians. The project started with the Place de la République in 2013, when the author-ities commissioned a redesign that created a pedes-trian plaza planted with trees and lined with benches. The next location will be the Place de la Bastille, cur-rently functioning as a traffic island with a huge memo-rial in the middle. The square will be reconnected to the curb on one side with a green space with benches and seating areas. The formal redesign of the square will start in 2017.

PARKS OPEN FOR EVENINGSTen parks and gardens across Paris have opened on Friday and Saturday evenings in May, the late openings will continue throughout June, July and August.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, in three little attic rooms, high up under the roofs overlooking Paris lived a big man, a thin man and a beautiful blonde woman. It might have been a pleasantly romantic story if these three fools didn’t have a gift for failure. Absolutely everything gave them a chance to slip up. While they try to cling to love, hope and life, these fools continually fall prey to accidents and pratical jokes as if they were nothing more than puppets of fate.Their lives resemble a circus of spinning plates, high wire antics and clowns who throw themselves out of the frying pan into the fi re while attempting to put it out with a water pistol. Our laughable antiheroes, endearing and irresistible, amaze us and reduce us to tears... of laughter!

WHAT CAN MICKEY MOUSE TEACH YOU

ABOUT YOUR EXPAT

CAREER?

MICKEY MOUSE IS AN EXPAT – A GREAT ONE. YEAH, YOU HEARD ME. THE LITTLE MOUSE IN THE RED SHORTS IS A SERIAL EXPAT, AND HE CAN TEACH YOU A THING OR TWO ON LEVERAGING YOUR CAREER AS AN INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL. MICKEY HAS TRAVELED PRETTY MUCH EVERYWHERE (MAGICAL LANDS, FOREIGN COUNTRIES, OTHER DIMENSIONS, EVEN THE MOON) AND HE HAS FACED SOME PRETTY STEEP CHALLENGES ON HIS WHIM-SICAL ADVENTURES. HE MAKES IT LOOK EASY. HERE ARE MICKEY’S BEST CAREER TIPS:

PRACTICAL

By Rita Golstein-Galperin Rita is a Career Makeover Strategist® for ex-pat women and the founder of Expat Renais-sance. She is an author, entrepreneur, pub-lic speaker, as well as career and business coach for expats. Rita helps expat women rediscover, redefine and REINVENT them-

selves while thriving overseas!www.expatrenaissance.com

SURROUNDED BYGOOD PEOPLE

What’s the one thing Mickey nev-er is? Alone. Whether it’s Donald, Minnie or Goofy, Mickey always has someone at his side to share his adventures or offer advice. For an expat, this is about a lot more than fun. Succeeding as an expat is all about strong net-working skills. You need to con-nect with people who can help negotiating with clients from different cultures, find a place to stay, open some doors in the professional world and just cheer you up when you’d rather flee.

CREATIVE While Donald freaks out about a roadblock, Mickey pulls his giant tool box and finds an orig-inal solution. His greatest asset is his creativity and his ability to take on problems in ways none of us would ever think of. When a roadblock comes up for you, rather than giving up, it’s time to get hare-brained. As an ex-pat, opportunities are all around you, so you need to be continu-ally watching out for them. It all comes down to opening your mind to new possibilities, new customs, creative ways, new doors and exciting opportunities that might come your way.

OWN BRANDCelebrity or not, nothing is quite as valuable as your own brand. Sure, it’s hard to compete with a talking mouse in red shorts, but you still need to stand out. That means creating a brand for yourself as a professional. This doesn’t mean doing a world tour (though if you could get away with that, go for it, because it would be awesome) but it can mean creating a LinkedIn profile where others can get in touch

with you. It can mean establish-ing yourself as a unique person-ality and mostly it is about outlin-ing the killer skills that make you stand out from every other run-of-the-mill professional or expat.

POSITIVE MINDSETImagine how long an episode would be if Mickey had to first sit down with some Ben & Jer-ry’s when Minnie was kidnapped and complain about how unfair the entire situation was and how unaccomplished he felt. Mick-ey stays cheerful and keeps whistling, and that’s how he ac-complishes his goals in fifteen minutes or less. It’s tempting to get bummed out and give up, but remember: nothing is really greener on the other side – it’s your mindset and attitude that make the difference.

EMBRACE THE STRANGEWhen Minnie reveals she just happens to have a rock-et ship in her garage, do we see Mickey go, “This is too weird. I’m going home”? Never. He jumps in and they sail off to the moon. It’s important to embrace the strange. While others are freaking out, you can take advantage of the opportuni-ty everyone else is weirded out by, and be halfway to the moon before they realize the chance they’ve just missed. If you get hired for a strange project, volunteer on this new initiative, or invited to a completely new and unu-sual area, instead of asking just why in the world Minnie has a rocket ship, you can accept the weird and spring board yourself to crazy awe-some success and new ca-reer possibilities.

MAJOR CHANGES REGARD-ING THE MULTI-YEAR CARTE DE SEJOUR

The government has been talking-about creating new types of carte de séjour. There are various ways to obtain a carte de séjour that lasts for several years. Until recently, there were eight categories (mentions) stated on the card itself: visiteur, étudiant, salarié, vie privée et fa-miliale, commerçant-artisan, scien-tifique, artistique and compétences et talents. Now law 2016-274 relat-ing to foreigners’ rights in France, passed on 7th March 2016, com-bines the last three ‘mentions’ into a category called “passeport talent”. The law can also address several other situations that are not yet clear-ly defined. One thing I find interest-ing is that the passeport talent is not supposed to be renewed. Previously foreigners could have six years with the former three types of status, but this is now reduced to four. The law clearly states that it is expected that these people will leave France un-less they can secure another type of immigration status.

Another change is that students can now receive a multi-year card. This mostly concerns students working on a doctorate, which can take sev-eral years; there is little reason to re-view their situation every year. The

same logic applies to certain em-ployees. Expatriates could already receive a three-year card, and now it can last for four years. People with a French contract working under local labour laws will also benefit.

One non-profit organization helping foreigners in France fears that the prefecture will soon make it even more difficult to obtain a carte de résident, which is valid ten years. Depending on how many people benefit from the other multi-year cards, this is a real risk.

Finally, the autorisation provisoire de séjour (APS) is getting better in two ways. The APS for students holding a master’s degree can now easily be changed to an employee APS, and they can better retain this status even if they change employers ear-ly on. There is also one now for the self-employed, which lasts one year and allows people to register and start a business before having to go to the prefecture to submit their file. In the latter case, the APS should help in obtaining the carte de séjour if the prefecture is fair.

By Jean TaquetJean holds a master’s degree in com-mercial and civil law from the Sorbonne University. He served as a French “offici-er juriste” and graduated from Saint Cyr de Coëtquidan in the French Army. He has also been a teacher at W.I.C.E. and a speaker at the OECD. Since 1997 he has been a consultant in cross-cultural practi-cal issues of all kinds confronting expatri-

ate families residing in France.

Standing up to give a speechcan be a daunting experi-ence for many of us. It is cited as one of the top hu-man social fears. We look for excuses to avoid doing it. With over 90 years of experience, Toastmasters has developed proven tech-niques to teach people to become not just good, but great speak-ers.

We all e n c o u n -ter public s p e a k i n g s i t u a t i o n s every day when introduc-ing ourselves at a party or giving direc-tions to a complete stranger on the street. Professional-ly we might have to share our opinions at meetings, ask questions, deliver pres-entations, do job interviews or give a sales pitch. Many of us try to avoid these sit-uations when we can. A Typical Meeting Includes:1. Opening: Welcoming guests and members by the club pres-ident.

2. Education Session: Joke, toast and a short speech from a member about a particular speaking or leadership technique.

3. Table Topics: Impromptu speeches of one to two minutes on a topic chosen by the Table Topics Master.

4. Prepared Speeches: Three members give a speech (five to seven min-utes) from a selection of 130 different types of speech and presentation projects.

Some people go to the mountain. I went to Paris.

From the earliest cave draw-ings, to Greek mythology – even Star Wars – some of themost impressionable stories ever told have one thing in common. They follow Joseph Campbell’s narrative structure called The Hero’s Journey.

My story is no different.

Instead of Obi-Wan Kenobi guiding my journey, I had The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Instead of Princess Leia issu-ing the instructions for my call to adventure, I had my future 88-year-old selfissuing the di-rective.

It was another rainy morning in 2003, I was sitting in my agency office in Portland, Oregon. I remember look-ing out the window thinking “What’s my story?” On paper, it seemed fabulous… New house, long term relationship, soaring agency career, de-signer clothes, exotic vaca-tions. So then why was it that I caught myself staring out my corner office window wonder-ing “Is this all there is?”

“Or is there something more interesting in store?” — This question haunted me. Overwhelmed by the threat of a later life regret, I initiated a conversation with my fu-ture 88-year-old self. I asked her if she was satisfied with her life’s story, or if there was something that she would have changed if she had the chance for a re-write.

“I would have based my story in Paris.” — She instantly re-

plied.

All I could think was — “Hell yeah! Move to PARIS! I wish… If only. But how?”

In The Hero’s Journey, the hero(ine) usually spends a great deal of time and an-guish refusing the call to adventure. We all have our bulletproof excuses for why we can’t do something. Bul-letproof because no one can argue against them, they seem to be black and white. For some it is because of their marital, family, financial, health situation, and for oth-ers it can be more specific. I thought that mine were espe-cially watertight because they all began with two ironclad words “I can’t”.

6 I can’t speak French. 6 I can’t legally rent an

apartment in Paris. 6 I can’t be in France more

than 90 days with my passport.

6 I can’t afford to pay my mortgage in Portland plus rent in Paris.

6 I can’t leave my job.And so on…

In fact, if I was to give that chapter of my life a title, it would simply be called, ‘I can’t’.

Luckily, it turns out that the phrase, I can’t, is a powerful trigger for me to transform the seemingly impossible into re-ality. And that is exactly what I did. I risked “having it all” to find out if there was some-thing more out there. It wasn’t easy, I realized that I needed to make room for it by let-ting go of what no longer fit. And that meant being brave enough to leave the wrong re-lationship, and leap from my well-worn career path to dis-cover my agency-free life.

I bought my first plane tick-et to Paris in 2001, yet didn’t step onto Parisian soil until 2004, and then again every year thereafter. My courage and knowledge grew be-tween visits. Finally, I packed two duffel bags and a car-ry-on and made the actual

move to Paris six years later, on Christmas Day 2010.

Apparently, I needed almost ten years to get over my “I can’ts” with the help of other Fran-cophiles, friends, clients, inspirational movies, blogs, and spirit ani-mals. Yes, spirit animals. I would channel my inner Parker Posey on more than three hundred oc-casions.

When the hero(ine) crosses the threshold and begins her adven-ture, there are always plenty of twists, turns and surprises. Just when I thought that Paris was my final destination, I discovered my tribe of other creative visionar-ies. Scientists, design-ers, filmmakers, social innovators, art directors, photographers– it was this group of like-mind-ed soul mates that would introduce me to a mag-ical medieval village in Burgundy. Within a year of visiting this village, I would join their creative forces when I unexpect-edly bought my own 500+ year-old house,

with not one, but two barns.

I now split my time be-tween my first love, Par-is, my new love, the Bur-gundy countryside, and my old love, Portland.

It is from these locations that I conduct Strategy Retreats, workshops, and one-on-one inten-sive sessions, helping individuals and brands restructure their narra-tives to something more inspired, or take their current story to the next level.

Like the impressionable stories of my formative years that were associat-ed with castles, my next Personal Strategy Re-treat will be conducted this autumn at Château de Mailly, in Burgundy. Imagine spending four nights perched in a châ-teau on the edge of a cliff to create your next chap-ter. I will no doubt be doing another check-in with my 88-year-old self. Who knows what she’d like to see happen in our next chapter?

Julie has been in the strategy and transformation business her entire life. Yet, it is in Paris that she was re-awakened to modernist masters like Pablo Picasso, Joseph Campbell, Carl Jung, Anaïs Nin, Rainer Maria Rilke and other narrative artists like Diana Vreeland, Sophie Calle and Bruce Lee. It is this en-counter that led Julie to create The Strategic Space for people to restructure their own narratives to something that is aligned with the story that they hope to tell with their existence. And since she was never able to find inclusive experiences that steeped her in this mindset, she created them, with retreats and workshops in the world’s most inspiring locations. LEGION D’HONNEUR AWARDEE

BIKAS SANYAL

HIS WORKS, HIS MARRIAGE AND HIS LIFE AS AN EXPAT

Bikas Sanyal’s is the ultimate expatriate success story. From veryhumble beginnings in India, he has had a remarkable career in the fields of academia, international diplomacy and intercultural dialogue. He has received the highest civilian honour from the President of France, the ‘Légion d’honneur’ and a prestigious award from the President of India. His wife, author and poet, Priti Sanyal, was always by his side. We speak to this amazing hus-band and wife duo about their life, expat experiences and their

partnership.

You’ve been an expat in France for sev-eral decades, was it difficult to adjust when you first arrived here?Bikas: Oh yes, it has been 46 years since we settled in France. I was always busy with my work so it was easier for me to adjust here than Priti. It was quite difficult for her as she was at home taking care of the children.

Priti: The language barrier was the most difficult. My world was all anglophone before, suddenly it was all French people. If you didn’t speak French, in fact very good French, in those days, you were looked upon as uneducated.

You earned a faculty assignment in 1966 as post-doctoral researcher at Iowa University. Tell us about your experi-ence in THE USA?Bikas: The US encouraged me to grow professionally and academ-ically. I learnt how to appreciate cultural factors for planning and

cultural education. For the first time I could articulate it empirically in my planning models. On the social side I was the President of the As-sociation of India.

Priti: It was my first culture shock. I was teaching History in the univer-sity of Iowa and it was a great op-portunity for me to teach the youth cultural values. It was the time of the Vietnam War and many of my students were drafted in the war. The American university environ-ment was very different from Indian university, a very informal culture and it was a great experience for me.

1966 was also special for you for an-other reason-your marriage to Priti. How did you two meet?Bikas: I wanted to marry before I moved to the US and my family and friends were on the lookout for a match for me. When Priti was intro-duced to me, my friends were quite

critical of her as she had a reputa-tion of being a rebel. Priti’s father was a lawyer and she was involved in student unions, and protest matches and was very outspoken and straightforward. But to me she seemed to be my perfect life part-ner. She took 6 months before she said yes, I wasn’t sure if she would accept me as I had a physical de-fect, I have only one eye, but I am lucky that she did accept.

Was it smooth sailing from the start?Bikas: I didn’t think it would be easy for Priti to adjust. My family was large and fairly poor and she came from a small and well-to-do family but she adjusted very well. I realised that she had a great qual-ity of bringing people and cultures together and many artistic talents, like painting and writing. I wanted to encourage her to pursue her tal-ents and I did.

You have worked with UNESCO for 30 years, what was your greatest challenge and greatest Joy?Bikas: I started working for UNE-SCO in 1969. The greatest joy and challenge was working with different cultures, ethnic groups and coun-tries developing their education. The Poland and Philippines project was quite challenging but rewarding as we were using the cultural varia-bles for an educational and planning model. It was the first time a project of such vastness was carried out but it was very successful.

Priti, your husband has worked and travelled in many countries around the world, did you accompany him on all his diplomatic missions? Was it difficult for you to stay away from India for so many years?Priti: I accompanied him on 35 mis-sions out of the 77 official missions he travelled on, including remote places like Rwanda, East Timor, Yemen, Poland, Kenya, Tanzania and Palestine. Being an historian I greatly enjoyed travelling with him and visiting places of historical and cultural interest and then writing about my experiences in journals, magazines and my books.

Bikas, Around 1999-2000, you took up the position of Director of Maison de l’inde in Cité Internationale Universitaire. Can you tell us how this came about and your fondest memory of this association?Bikas: It was the time I retired from UNESCO in 1998 and had offered my services free to India and Africa for development projects when I was requested to take up this position and try to renovate the dilapidated ‘Maison de l’Inde’ or House of India. My fondest memory is of the initial years of struggle when my wife and I worked hard to navigate through the web of French bureaucracy and acquire the money from the Indi-an Government for a new building which is today the new House of In-dia. She was more involved with the cultural side and started many cul-tural activities. We were the founders of the ‘Sammilani Association’ for the Bengali community that organises the Durga Puja every year amongst other activities. Priti later took on the formal, non-remunerative role of ‘Cultural Attaché’ for the Maison de l’Inde.

Bikas you received the highest civilian

award in France, the Prestigious Legion D’Honneur from the French President in 2007. How did you feel when you learnt you were chosen for this honour? Bikas: A member of the government board and the ambassador of the President reviewed my work and informed me that the President had nominated me for this tremendous honour. I was speechless.

Priti: When I heard the news, I was dancing around in sheer joy. It was such a proud moment for me to see my husband receive such a great honour. He is only the second Ben-gali to receive this honour.

You will be retiring from your post for the Maison soon, what are your next plans?Bikas: Mentally and physically we are exhausted and want to stop although we will regret not being around the younger generation, the students. There is so much to learn from the youth, this is what we will miss the most but we will like to trav-el more for pleasure and take per-haps a cruise to relax. I will still have my mission to Jordon where I teach the masters students occasionally but would like to go back to India for

a few months. It has been 50 years that we are away from India, it will be hard to resettle again but we will divide our time between France and India and see how things go.

You have been married for almost 50 years, what is the recipe of a successful marriage? Priti: I think it is important to be friends with each other, help, sup-port and give space to each oth-er. Marriage is a partnership, there should be no dominance and con-trol but mutual respect. He always encouraged me in my writing, poet-ry, painting and I supported him in his endeavours. When he took off on missions, I sometimes stayed at home and looked after the kids but also accompanied him on many mis-sions.

Bikas: The missions she accompa-nied me on were the most memora-ble and successful. When she joined me, we truly were able to explore the culture and country to the fullest and it helped my work too. Both of us have different opinions and we do argue with each other, but we always accept the differences and that en-riches our marriage.

THEY DID IT AGAIN!

They did it again! Sabri Ben Radhia and his dynamic, in-ternational team provided an-other excellent afternoon of thought-provoking, entertaining, amusing, and challenging pres-entations at this year’s TEDxI-HEParis event.

A mixed group of speakers from different nationalities and walks

of life gave a series of talks un-der the banner “Beyond Our Limits”. Each presentation ad-dressed this theme from a dif-ferent perspective, but they all shared the common factor of focusing on our human state. Subjects included whether peace between nations will ever be possible, examining the im-pact of culture, physical condi-

tion, education, political status, our capacity to create, exploit-ing the power of authenticity, nurturing empathy and human sensitivity.

TED conferences are a well known platform for leading thinkers and doers to commu-nicate “ideas worth spreading”. In the same spirit, TEDxconfer-

ences (the ‘x’ indicates an inde-pendently self-organised event) aim to bring people together to connect and share their ex-periences and ideas with each other.

This year’s event was attended by 600 people in the Théâtre de la Madeleine, and Sabri and his team did a great

job encouraging networking, exchanges and discussions in the very friendly, relaxed atmos-phere they created. As Sabri himself said, “Going beyond our limits wasn’t just the theme of the event, it was an actuality. The organizing team, the speakers and even the participants chal-lenged themselves and con-

tributed to an amazing day full of emotion and inspiration. The keys to that were diversity, pas-sion and asking for help.”

On Your Marks,Get Set,Escargo

Some people run a marathon. For others, it’s climbing Everest. Prince Harry dragged heavy things to the South Pole, and Ewan McGregor motorcycled around and then down the world. It turns out that my thing is making up ridiculous challenges involving public transport and ob-scure places of interest in European cities. This week saw the inaugurative un-dertaking of Drinking the Snail: Or, how to get round all of Paris’ 20 ar-rondissements in a day, whilst hav-ing a drink and visiting something of cultural interest in each one. “On your marks, get set, escar-GO!” the spectators cheered excit-edly as we crossed the start line in arrondissement number 20 (Père Lachaise cemetery). Except that of course they didn’t, because this challenge is completely made up and had precisely 2 competitors.

We nevertheless prepared in a sur-prisingly systematic manner by writ-ing a list of official rules and regulations. The fact that this was scribbled on the back of a napkin at a table strewn with empty pichets of Côtes-du-Rhône is immaterial.

The areas of Paris are organised by number and circle their way outin a clockwise sequen-tial manner from 1 to 20, forming a snail-like shape. We

cleverly started at 20 and worked our way back in, to get the longer distances covered as early as possi-ble. Our priorities were making new discoveries and taking semi-ironic selfies along the way. I think my friend Kate and I both have our dads to thank for this keen curiosity in life; hers emailed us several detailed stories of early hot air balloon-ing in France, and mine assisted our research of things to visit in the 19th by asking, ‘How do you feel about abattoirs?’ High points included a very hid-den secret Russian church and its neighbouring building, the oldest orthodox theological institute in Western Europe (Eglise de Saint-Serge, 19th). Also, a beautiful Jap-

anese pagoda in the 7th (now La Pagode cinema), and the

Promenade Plantée, an elevated park through

the rooftops of the 12th. Sad times included disap-pointing waterless fountains or parks we were locked out of once we hit night-time.

Our darkest moment was when we real-

ised we’d accidentally finished lunch at 5pm and

were only in the 13th. This whole thing was harder than we’d realised. But we rallied, we adapted, we got our act together. Having averaged an hour per arrondissement for the

first few, we somehow powered through the next 4 in sixty

minutes flat.

Our drinking was also significantly less than expect-ed. Partly when we realised a 4 euro drink in each a r rond i ssemen t would be 80 whole

euros each, and partly when we real-

ised if we actually had 20 drinks, we would prob-

ably die. Know your limits. Know thyself. This day was like a journey into my very soul!

Don’t just take my word for it; you can totally make your own Paris adven-ture. For our next one, we’re thinking a tour that incorporates all the Métro lines (we managed to use all but 3 of them). Or a trip around movie loca-tions (Maggie Gyllenhaal in Paris Je T’aime and Audrey Tautou in Amélie made it into ours). Or just an all-out History of Hot Air Ballooning extrava-ganza. The possibilities are endless. And when the end is in sight, there will be no feeling like the sense of mad accomplishment in your victo-ry, and nothing will help you avoid hitting the wall like the taste of that emergency crêpe on the street.

Russian expats, Sergey Kuznetsov and his wife Katya were very much aware of this when they moved to France a few years ago, and it is one of the reasons they created their “Science & Vacation” initiative. This vacational education program, which they are launching in Octo-ber, provides an opportunity for like-minded people to combine the satisfaction of learning, the pleas-ure of discovering new places and the joy of conversing about a sci-ence-based topic together.

A chemistry graduate from Mos-cow’s State University, Sergey also spent a year as Knight Fellow at Stanford University in the States. “Stanford was where I saw how new information could actually change me and affect my life. I found my-self in an international multicultural

environment, surrounded by peo-ple who were as mature, smart and inquisitive as I was. Our commu-nication was unobstructed by competition or by the need to take sides which often occurs during group work. This was unexpected and important. It allowed us to form unique con-nections, ones that allow peo-ple to exchange experiences for sheer mutual benefit and fun.” Sergey realized that he was not alone in enjoying this experience and decided he wanted to provide such opportunities to a wider pub-lic.

For Sergey the vacational aspect of the Science & Vacation program is just as important as the specif-ic subject under discussion. Great thought has been given to finding the right venues for the courses because he wants participants to really enjoy their five-day learn-

ing break and discover not just scientific information

but also the beauty of the French regions.

The first course, en-titled “The Past and

Future of Food”, will take place from 6th to 10th October in the beautiful town of Chantil-ly, just an hour’s drive from Paris. Home to its eponymous cream and beautiful châ-teau, Chantilly is also a re-

nowned centre

of French gastronomy, making it an ideal location for this topic. The course will examine what modern science thinks about French cui-sine, with lectures and discussions led by Guelia Pevzner, a well-known contemporary expert on regional French cooking. There will also be plenty of opportunities to taste the subjects under discussion and to discover the sights and attractions of Chantilly. The second course, on “The Secret of Scent”, will take place at the end of October in Provence. The lecturer will be the famous scientist and perfume ex-pert Luca Turin who is also editor of the blog boisdejasmin.com.

You do not need to have a scientific qualification to take part in the Sci-ence & Vacation courses, just an interest in the course subject, the desire to learn more about it and the ability to understand and com-municate in English.

To find out more about upcoming courses and to enrol, visit the Sci-ence & Vacation website: www.scienceandvacation.com

SCIENCE

SCIENCE & VACATIONWe all know the feeling of satisfaction that comes from learning something new, and the desire we have to share freshly acquired knowledge. Schools and universities provide ample opportunities for this, but once we leave the educational circuit and the routine of working life takes over, we generally have less time to devote to learning about anything that isn’t directly related to our pro-fessional or family lives. Any free time we do have, we usually prefer to spend relaxing, meeting friends or traveling.

Senior Outreach ManagerThe nonprofit US Litus Foundation was formed five years ago to help slow global warming and help crea-tures adapt to it. The English sister

Litus Foundation has just been regis-tered as charity number 1166853 by the Charity Commission. As a first project, we are develop-ing extreme-efficiency uncooled en-gines, for all uses and fuels. They do not yet exist; people are not aware that they are possible; apparently only Litus is developing them. Up to 60 % of man-made CO2is said to come from all internal combustion (IC) engines. For over 140 years, every time a piston engine has run, 30% to 50% of fuel energy has been dissipated through water- or air-based cooling systems and general radiation. This waste should not con-tinue.

PRINCIPAL TASKS would involve: Helping establish partnerships with European (mainly French) govern-ment agencies and companies; ap-plying for grants and loans; soliciting support from individuals, companies and nonprofits. Such support could be in the form of advice on man-agement, manufacturing or financial issues, as well as sponsorship, dona-tions, or the provision of investment loans. In addition, tasks would in-volve administering a small office growing to about six people; keeping financial records; maintaining a tight and efficient electronic and paper fil-ing system.

EXPERIENCE. The candidate should have a reasonable network of connections in the Ile de France area, as well as in greater France and in Europe. They should have previously run a small office, and had some experience of writing grant or loan applications.SKILLS. Should include perfect writ-ten and spoken French; almost per-fect written and spoken English (all the Foundation’s internal and much of its external correspondence will be in English); a level, clear and engag-ing telephone manner; knowledge and extensive experience of office computing software; ability to quickly sort through and summarize on-line researches; a level of comfort with science and engineering matters; the ability to deal with well-known peo-ple in a natural manner, as equals. Should be able to credibly represent the Foundation solo at conferences and at key meetings; some travel within Europe and to the UK may be involved.

EMPLOYMENT could initially be on a consulting flexi-time basis for 25 to 40 hours weekly, in an informal office located in central Paris. After three months a long-term position with benefits will be offered. Arrangements are relatively flexible and could to a degree be tailored around the right candidate. Good pay is offered, depending on ability and experience. This is a real op-portunity to help build something im-portant in France and Europe. [email protected]

OVERVIEW

The Litus Foundation was founded in California to help slow global warming, and to support technologies to cut CO2 emissions. This sister Litus Foundation is now registered as English charity number 1166853.

Up to 60 % of man-made CO2 is said to come from all (IC) engines. For over 130 years, 30% to 50% of fuel energy has been wasted through water- or air-based cooling systems and radiation. Litus is developing 21st century super-efficient uncooled internal combustion (IC) engines, for ALL uses and fuels. They do not yet exist, people are unaware of their possibility, and apparently only Litus is developing them. Engines must become much more efficient, or use hydrogen as it becomes available.

Uncooled engines would cut energy use, operating costs and CO2 emissions by about half. They would be two to ten times lighter and smaller; nearly silent; more reliable as there are no cooling or piston / cylinder oil systems to fail; and cost about the same as today’s units. Efficiencies can be raised further by using the extra-hot energy-rich exhaust gas in a turbine or for district heating and cooling. The engines are for ships; rail; agricultural / mining equipment; generators; pumps; small machines, and vehicles.

At December’s Paris COP21 meeting, there was much talk of the end of the fossil fuel era. It is not realistic today, as IC engines, sometimes as part of a hybrid-drive system, are virtually the only option in so many of the above applications. The only solution would be to run uncooled IC engines on hydrogen (see below).

Pistons / cylinders of impact-resistant industrial ceramic, running at much greater temperatures and pressures than today’s, are inside thermally and acoustically insulating casings. With no plumbing for a piston-cylinder oil or coolant systems, engines can be snap-in cartridges as sketched, swapped in minutes. Vehicles and equipment no longer need to be towed to a repair facility, a real game-changer.

Once the first long-life uncooled engines are on the market, they would replace cooled engines within fifteen years, cutting total man-made CO2 by 25% or more, potentially the single biggest and quickest fix for limiting temperature rise near the 1.5 to 2.0 degrees C target of Paris agreement. During a transition, the IC engine market would grow beyond today’s over $300 Billion annually.

The challenging ongoing design, building and testing of up to six 300 - 450 kW long-life pre-production prototypes is budgeted at $14 million, including $8 million contingencies. Private rather than available government funding is sought. Alliances are forming with engine users and product manufacturers, also with academic / research institutions, one of which is due to build the prototypes’ ceramics.

Within two years, after successful 1,000 hour testing – giving great credit to all involved – patents will be licensed to volume producers. No further funding is required; people would use their own money to buy items with super-efficient, smaller and lighter uncooled engines, so cutting global CO2.

Uncooled engines using hydrogen and a generator could replace fuel cells in many systems. With similar efficiencies, much longer life and about a tenth of the cost and three to five times the life, uncooled gen-sets would lead to the wide use of hydrogen in ‘zero-emissions’ situations. (Hydrogen for IC engines is proven, by BMW and others.)

For the engine project, investment loans can be arranged, secured by assets including a valuable patent portfolio, with investors additionally entitled to a share of gross revenues. Giving protection in over fifty countries, the strong patents are controlled by the Foundation, due to receive nearly all gross patent revenues.

The start of uncooled engine production, promising a 25% to 35% reduction of CO2, could motivate greater efforts. Spending on solar, wind and soil management could cut CO2 by over 25%; increasing buildings' efficiency a further 12%; changing habits in driving and use of heating / air-conditioning another 15%. By doing ALL, manmade CO2 emissions could be cut by about 75% within fifteen years. Such a big reduction – far greater than now thought possible – will seriously slow global warming.

JULES’ SLOPPY JOE & TATER TOTS

{ 2 bowls of mixed lettuce { 1 kg extra lean beef { 1 whole chopped onions { 3 cloves garlic minced { 1/3 cup ketchup { 1/4 cup mustard { 2 tbsp Worcester sauce { 1/4 cup brown sugar { 1 tsp Salt { 1 tsp Pepper

by Club RayéRECIPES

INGREDIENTS: { 150ml pint of lager { 150ml of lemonade

Beer that you can use as the base for your shandy:

{ Wheat beer. Silky and smooth, but a little heavier, pairs wonderfully with the lemon.

{ Lager. Crisp and refreshing, this makes a somewhat lighter shandy.

INGREDIENTS:

{ 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled

{ 1 tablespoon all-pur pose flour

{ 1 teaspoon garlic powder

{ 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

DIRECTIONS { Boil 3 big potatoes for

10-15 minutes. { Peel the potatoes

and shred them using a food processor or just a simple shredder and put them in a big bowl.

{ Add all of the ingredients together with the potatoes

{ Mix well { Form the shape you

want but preferably the classic tater tots shape for optimum cooking.

{ Deep fry the tater tots on medium to high heat for about 8-10 minutes.

{ Let cool and serve with ketchup on the side.

KEVIN’S BEER & LEMONADE SHANDY

DIRECTIONS:If you can, choose all-natural lemonade. With a great beer, natural lemonade tastes amazing. If using a lemon-ade such as Sprite, add a little bit less than the specified amount (~150 ml). A shandy made with lemon soda ends up being a little sweet for many people, overpowering the taste of the beer. You can always add more soda in at the end after tasting.
