Between January and June 2016, Singapore welcomed more than 8 million visitor arrivals, constituting a 12.5% growth from the same period in 2015.

Continuing from an upward trend at the end of 2015, Chinese visitor arrivals grew 55%. Stimulation in the Chinese market came with destination marketing efforts by Changi Airport Group (CAG), Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and key travel agents and recent residential and commercial developments in Southern Malaysia.

In Southeast Asia, Indonesia saw strong recovery from 2015, clocking in a 7% growth in visitor arrivals as Indonesian travelers express strong interest to country-wide travel fairs featuring flights to Singapore. Europe too posted double-digit growth at 11% thanks to keen interest by German-speaking tourists in Tui’s recent winter-cruises based in Singapore.

Mirroring the country’s larger tourism climate, Singapore Changi Airport saw strong mid-year growth with passenger movements of 28.7 million from January to June 2016, up 8% from the same period in 2015. Changi Airport's top 10 country markets experienced similarly positive growth with Malaysia, China, Thailand, Japan and Vietnam clocking double-digit figures.

Having enjoyed strong bilateral relations for over 50 years, Prime Ministers of India and Singapore signed a joint declaration on a strategic partnership in November 2015, further enhancing bilateral relationships, connectivity and economic cooperation. Amidst such close bilateral relations, passenger movements reached historic highs in 2015, making India a crucial source market to Singapore.

India is Singapore’s 5th largest tourism market with the 3rd largest tourism receipts. In 2015, STB welcomed more than 1 million Indian visitor arrivals; a 7.5% growth from 2014. Changi Airport similarly saw a record 3.43 million passengers between Singapore and India. On 31 December 2015, STB partnered with Air India, Jet Airways and Singapore Airlines to surprise passengers flying to India with special in-flight events to celebrate this milestone.

Low-cost carrier Scoot is the 9th and latest airline to foray into India, flying to Amritsar and Chennai with Boeing 787 Dreamliners in May 2016. with upcoming services to Jaipur in October 2016, Scoot will be looking to India as a key market in the coming years.

Indian carrier Jet Airways will also be adding capacity, catering to growing business travel between both countries and increasing connecting traffic from Australia and Indonesia. Having upgauged daily Delhi services in November and twice daily Mumbai services consecutively in June and August 2015 to A330s, the airline announced plans to mount services to Bengaluru in the coming months.

STB also held the ‘Singapore’s One Million Moment’ contest, giving away a tour package of unprecedented luxury which offered a business-class ticket, a stay in a villa on Sentosa and a drive in a Lamborghini around Singapore’s F1 circuit amongst other unique experiences.

This momentum in growth has continued into 2016. In the first half of 2016, Singapore recorded a 10% year-on-year growth in Indian visitor arrivals and 3.3% growth in total passengers. Over the last 5 years, traffic and visitor arrivals from India have grown by 4.5% and 3.1% respectively.

In addition to welcoming strong tourist numbers, Singapore is also a preferred transfer hub for travellers between India and Australia or Indonesia. with strong network connectivity in the region, Changi Airport connects more than a third of traffic on these routes. At present, Changi Airport has more than 200 weekly services connecting Singapore to 8 cities in Australia with a new city link to Canberra coming in October 2016. with Indonesia, 13 cities see more than 500 weekly services to Singapore.

undoubtedly, food is a crucial aspect of any traveller’s itinerary. For this reason, Changi Airport strives to ensure that the palettes of Indian travellers are always well served. In January 2016, Changi Airport welcomed its 2nd Indian restaurant, Chutney Mary. Chutney Mary offers passengers Indian fast food, with a range of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Located conveniently at Terminal 2’s public area, the 24-hour outlet provides passengers with a myriad of tasty Indian delights ranging from kebabs to curries.

In Terminal 2 transit, Kaveri Vegetarian Cuisine provides delectable gastronomic options for departing and transiting passengers. The familiar brand has been serving passengers in Changi Airport authentic North and South Indian vegetarian cuisine since 2000. Specials include Dosai served with curried vegetables, potatoes and onions, and the Chana Masala, an exotic spiced chickpea dish.

Passengers can be assured they will never go hungry when in Changi Airport.

CAG celebrated the month of June by featuring Australia in the airport’s 13th edition of destination-themed in-airport events. Titled “G’Day Australia!”, the event aimed to bring Australia even closer to the Singaporean public and Changi Airport’s passengers by highlighting the country’s astounding natural environments, world-class coastlines, unique wildlife, as well as her fine wine and cuisine.

Today, Australia is Changi Airport’s 4th largest air passenger market, and plays a strategic role in Singapore’s aviation network. Last year, Changi Airport saw over 5 million passengers travelling between Singapore and Australia, constituting a year-on-year growth of 3.1%. It is also worth noting that outside of Oceania, Changi Airport is the world’s most connected airport to Australia with over 65,000 1-way weekly seats.

2015 was an exceptional year for Australian tourism, with international arrivals hitting 7.4 million, demonstrating a year-on-year growth of 8.2%. Singapore, in particular, was Australia’s 5th largest visitor source market with some 400,000 Singapore residents visiting this world-class holiday destination. On the other hand, Australia remains Singapore’s 4th largest visitor source market with over 1.04 million visitors recorded in 2015.

2015 also marked the 50th year of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Australia. To commemorate the occasion and further grow bilateral relations, both countries signed a joint declaration on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP). under the auspices of the CSP, both governments have agreed on a tailored multi-year visa arrangement to facilitate travel and entry of Singapore nationals. In addition, there will be further collaborations in boosting 2-way tourism flows through the sharing of research, data and market insights. These initiatives have been much welcomed by both countries to strengthen the flow of people between. Such developments are timely as air capacity continues to expand between both nations.

Last year, Changi Airport welcomed the new city link of Cairns by SilkAir. Through the course of the year, Qantas reinstated services between Singapore and Perth with narrowbody aircraft operations while Scoot added Melbourne as its 4th Australian destination. This year, we have since seen additional capacity to Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth being injected by Singapore Airlines and Qantas.

Notably, come 20 September 2016, Singapore Airlines will commence four weekly services to Canberra, which will operate onward to wellington. Dubbed the “Capital Express” route, the service will be Canberra’s first regularly scheduled international flight and the first non-stop link between the capitals of Australia and New Zealand. This will also raise Changi Airport’s Australian connectivity to a record high of nine city links.

Given the series of aviation and tourism developments, Changi Airport rode on the positive momentum with the G’Day Australia in-airport event from 27 May and 24 June 2016.

Spread across three event sites at Changi Airport Terminal 3 Departure Hall, G’Day Australia consisted of a main exhibition area, an adventure trail and a weekend performance zone. Visitors could experience and learn about multifaceted Australia by exploring a 100 square-meter

fully immersive digital enclosure featuring Australia tourism short films and multi-touch interactive surface displays. Visitors could also immerse themselves in two virtual reality zones at the main exhibition.

In a separate area, both adults and children could navigate an indoor quad ride adventure trail comprising of six zones where they would encounter different Australian adventures ranging from the Australian Outback to the revered Great Barrier reef. Families with kids were

also treated to the special appearance of Australia’s popular children musical group Hi-5 at the weekend performance zone on 28 and 29 May.

Visitors thinking of Australia as their next travel destination could also enjoy attractive travel packages made available by CAG’s four travel trade partners – Chan Brothers Travel, CTC Travel, Misa Travel and Seiki Travel.

In collaboration with all close aviation and travel partners, CAG looks forward to another robust year for the Australian market.

Singapore Airlines (SQ) and Lufthansa (LH) have signed a joint-venture that will see both airline groups operating key routes between Singapore and Europe, significantly expanding codeshare ties and commercial co-operation. In addition to SQ and LH, the agreement includes SQ subsidiary SilkAir, and LH subsidiaries Austrian Airlines and Swiss.

The two airline groups have begun coordinating schedules to provide travellers greater convenience between route networks, offering joint fare promotions, aligning corporate programmes, and exploring enhancements to existing frequent-flyer programme ties. Other elements of the agreement requiring additional levels of regulatory approval may be implemented progressively through 2016.

Passengers on SQ will be offered convenient access to over 20 new routes on flights operated by LH and Swiss, to and from points in Austria, Belgium, Germany

and Switzerland via the transfer hubs of Munich and Zurich. In turn, passengers on LH and Swiss will be able to access codeshare travel on SQ-operated flights on more than 10 routes serving destinations in Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific.

New thrice weekly SQ-operated flights between Singapore and Düsseldorf, have also been covered under such arrangements. Serviced by all-new Airbus A350-900s fitted with the latest-generation cabin products, Düsseldorf is the third German city in SQ’s route network. To welcome the new service launch on 21 July 2016, SQ treated passengers to an inaugural event in the gate-hold room with a sumptuous buffet spread.

As the first direct air-link between both cities, the route represents a significant milestone for CAG and SQ. Additionally, the commencement of this new route establishes Singapore as the only South-east Asian city serving the three busiest airports in Germany, including Frankfurt

and Munich. with this new route addition, Changi Airport offers travelers direct flights to 15 cities in Europe.

In preparation for the new route, SQ, CAG, STB and Düsseldorf Airport collaborated on a series of travel trade seminars in Germany from 17 February to 3 March 2016. The seminars were organized in Düsseldorf, as well as 7 other German cities in Düsseldorf ’s catchment region, namely Aachen, Bielefeld, Bonn, Cologne, Dortmund, Essen and Munster. Given its proximity to Düsseldorf, a travel trade seminar was also organized in the nearby border town of Arnhem, Netherlands on 10 May 2016. with excellent turnouts of more than 40 travel agents, each seminar saw enthusiastic discussions between participants on the various products available for German tourists.

Düsseldorf is the capital of North rhine- westphalia. Besides being an international business, manufacturing and financial hub, it is also a leading fashion centre. The city is marked by the famous rhine river. Lined by cafés and bars, the rhine embankment promenade links the traditional Altstadt (Old Town) to the modern MedienHafen, offering visitors a view of Düsseldorf ’s beautiful rhine skyline.

On 2 September 2016, west Air (PN) commenced four weekly flights connecting Singapore to Ürümqi, the provincial capital of Xinjiang uyghur Autonomous region of China. The service, routed via Chongqing, will operate on Mondays, wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Each service will arrive in Singapore at 23:35 before departing at 00:35 the following morning. The urumqi – Chongqing – Singapore service has also been planned for an eventual increase to daily frequencies by the end of 2016.

Establishing Changi Airport’s 32nd city-link to China, the Ürümqi service is a historic first between both cities. Also the first same-day arrival itinerary between

both cities, PN’s service drastically reduces total travelling time via prevailing circuitous transfers through Beijing, Guangzhou or Shanghai, by up to 16 hours.

PN’s new development at Changi Airport follows hot on the heels of its inaugural thrice weekly service from Chongqing in February 2016. Dubbed the “revitalisation of the Ancient Silk road”, the new route connects Ürümqi, an important node in the “Silk road Economic Belt”, and Singapore, a key city along the “21st-century Maritime

Silk road”, establishing a significant milestone for the “One road, One Belt” initiative pioneered by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013. The service also realises the aspiration of a six-party Memorandum of Strategic Cooperation inked on 8 January 2016 amongst Changi Airport Group, Chongqing Airport Group, west Air, Air China Limited Chongqing Branch, Chongqing Airlines and SilkAir to develop connectivity from cities in Northwestern China (such as Ürümqi) via Chongqing to Singapore.

Chongqing Airlines (OQ) has commenced thrice weekly services to Changi Airport. Established in 2007, the Chongqing-based airline is jointly-owned by China Southern Airlines and Chongqing Municipal Development & Investment Company. This marks the airline’s first operations in Singapore, its third international point to date. The new service operates every Monday, wednesday and Friday with Airbus A320 aircraft, operating 453 one-way seats weekly.

The service’s inaugural flight arrived in Singapore on 9 September 2016 at 5:20pm and departed back for Chongqing at 6:20pm. To celebrate the occasion, OQ launched a promotional fare of 450 yuan (or 67.70 uSD) for passengers booking tickets at least 14 days in advance. The fare included on-board meals and 23kg of check-in luggage.

OQ marks the 8th Chinese carrier joining Changi Airport’s family and the 3rd carrier to operate between Singapore and Chongqing, after SilkAir and west Air. OQ’s new service follows a series of

capacity injections into the route in tandem with growing passenger traffic between both cities. The route has seen an increase in weekly frequency from 5 weekly early this year to 17 weekly in September 2016.

On 8 January 2016, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing and Chongqing Mayor Huang Qifan opened the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative (CCI) Administrative Bureau Office in Chongqing marking the start of the third government-to-government (G2G) project between Singapore and China. Announced by President Xi Jinping in November 2015, the project is expected to tap on both Singaporean and Chinese expertise in developing policies to lower financial and logistics costs while growing Chongqing connectivity domestically and internationally.

Industry. As such, to meet the incoming boom in purchased travel packages, foreign investments and subsequent passenger traffic growth, MAI is planning to develop new and exciting services and programs soon.

q: myanmar is an exciting destination with a wide variety of tourism

offerings. what can tourists look forward to in this country?Since Myanmar opened her doors with a series of changes since 2010, the country has been developing as a tourist destination internationally, especially catching the interest of Asian travellers. Tourists can look forward to seeing much of Myanmar’s history, culture and heritage. They can visit the famed Shwedagon Pagoda, buy local hand-made handicrafts, gems and jewellery at the Scott Market in Yangon, and enjoy hot-air balloon rides in Bagan, the city of ancient pagodas.

Tourists can also enjoy Myanmar’s myriad of natural wonders, such as the inspiring Mount Popa, the vast and serene Inle Lake and its nearby water village in Shan State, the National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens in Pyin Oo Lwin, u Pein Bridge in Amarapura, and the beautiful Ngapali beach in rhakhine State. Last but not least, tourists can experience the cultures of many ethnic groups in Myanmar.

q: how does myanmar Airways international see Changi Airport as

a strategic partner in the airline’s growth plans?Since MAI started operations in 1993, we have considered Changi Airport as a long standing strategic partner in the airline’s growth plans. Our safe and smooth air operations are dependent Changi Airport’s innovative services and the efficiency of their qualified staff. Changi, being one of the best airports in the world, has always considered the satisfaction and needs of their valued customers as a top priority. Similarly, the airline’s growth

vision is highly aligned to Changi’s – both organisations are headed in the same direction. we strive to offer our best services to our valuable customers, maintaining and growing our good relationship forever.

q: myanmar presents great growth opportunity for international

businesses and tourists. how is myanmar Airways international preparing to capture the growth in air travel to the country?Myanmar stands at the intersection of South Asia, Southeast Asia and China, a strategic area both geo-politically and economically. New special economic or industrial zones such as Dawai Seaport, Kyauk Phyu Seaport and Thilawa Seaport are just some examples that leverage Myanmar’s significance in the region. In anticipation of the many international investors and tourists expected to enter Myanmar in the near future, the new Hanthawaddy International Airport with an annual capacity of at least 12 million visitors will be built in Bago City, just a two hour drive from Yangon.

To prepare for such developments, MAI is preparing a long term strategic plan to capture growth in air travel to the country. Some measures being taken are codeshares with international partners, exploration of new routes, expansions to new destinations, and fleet increments and upgrades. Currently MAI has codeshares with international partners Korean Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Asiana Airlines and Malaysia Airlines.

Moreover, MAI has entered into a codeshare partnership with domestic airline partner Air KBZ, providing seamless travel for international passengers connecting onto domestic routes within Myanmar. Passengers can now look forward to greater convenience when travelling on Air KBZ and MAI.

q: mAi is a long standing partner of Changi Airport. what are some

of the milestones that the airline has achieved to date? There are many milestones in MAI’s history. A notable example I recall is MAI being Myanmar’s only IATA Operational Safety Audit Program (IOSA) certified operator. In the 2014 ASEAN Business Awards, MAI was also named the Most Admired ASEAN Enterprise in Myanmar under the “ASEAN Centricity” category by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC). Additionally, MAI has a 100% accident-free safety record in our entire history of aviation; a credit to our team of experienced and skilled aviation personnel.

q: with the recent visa exemption for 30 day trips between singapore

and myanmar, will there be any new developments by mAi to increase its services to singapore? The 30-day visa-free program will improve the relationship between both countries. Myanmar has recently opened its doors both economically and politically. with such developments, it is our hope that both inbound & outbound tourism from and to Singapore will increase. we foresee many Singaporean investors increasing their presence in Myanmar. Changi Airport Group participated in the China Air Logistics Development Conference & Exhibition in Zhengzhou, China. The event is attended by more than 150 participants, comprising of freight forwarders and airlines, who came together to share their views on China’s air cargo market and their outlook for 2016.

e-CommerCe, eleCtroniCs And temperAture sensitive CArgo Are poised for growth

Majority of the airfreight stakeholders in China agreed that China’s air cargo industry is experiencing a slowdown, with declines in exports from China to Europe and Japan. Despite the general decline, there are a few bright sectors. For instance, several presenters have highlighted the strong growth of cross border e-commerce in recent years, and according to one presenter, cross-border e-commerce in China is expected to grow to uS$1.2billion in 2017, up from uS$640 million in 2014.

Pharmaceuticals and perishables volume are also expected to rise, due to the rising income of Chinese nationals. Growth in demand of such specialized cargo presents opportunities for logistics stakeholders who have the capability to handle and store such temperature sensitive products.

ZhengZhou – An emerging Air huB in CentrAl ChinA

Zhengzhou is a major hub in China for rail, telecommunications and is one of the eight designated airport hubs in China. 30% of China’s population resides within a 500km radius from Zhengzhou, representing a large potential for intermodal transshipment to/from the city.

The city also has established the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone (ZAEA), the first industrial, commercial and logistics zone built specifically with air transportation

as its core. The 415 square kilometer bonded area has managed to attract major manufacturers such as Foxconn, as well as several other manufacturers in electronics, info communication technology and bioscience.

In response to strong growth in aircraft movements, CAG is building more aircraft parking stands to accommodate future growth of aircraft movements in Changi Airport.

By the end of 2016, CAG aims to have ten more remote parking stands operational. Additionally, two more contact stands in Terminal 2 and one contact stand in Terminal 1 will be converted to Multiple Aircraft receiving Stands (MArS). The MArS capabilities will allow two aircraft to be parked at the same aircraft stand. Once

completed, more passenger flights can be docked at contact stands during the peak hours, enabling passengers to embark/disembark through aerobridges.

By early 2017, the total number of aircraft stands at Changi Airport will increase to 169, coinciding with the expected operational readiness of Terminal 4. The 169 stands will comprise of 115 contact stands distributed amongst the four terminals, inclusive of 11 MArS conversions, and 54 remote stands.

Apart from providing the headroom for traffic growth, the increased number of aircraft parking stands will offer the necessary allowance for stand closures at Terminals 1, 2, and 3 when bay rehabilitation and aerobridge end-of-life replacement works are required.
