VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION AND CELEBRATION EVENT

Last Friday, I along with many CCN staff had the pleasure

of joining with over 150 Community Care volunteers to

celebrate and thank them for their contributions to the

agency and to the impact they have on the lives of

individuals across Northumberland County.

The celebration event was held at the Alderville Nation

Community Centre. Councillor

Julie Bothwell (pictured below

right) began the morning by

leading the group through a traditional smudging ceremony. Julie

provided a short talk on the meaning of the ceremony and the reason for

using various medicines during the ceremony. It was very informative and

a wonderful way to begin our day.

Cheryl McFarlane, Regional

Hospice Coordinator and Jamie

Muckle, Project Manager for the

Palliative Care Community Team (pictured left) presented to

the group about the new direction of the Hospice Services

program within CCN. New staff have been added to our

team which has brought on new resources. Stay tuned for

further details on upcoming summer training opportunities.

Time for a stretch, and what better way to accomplish

this but by a group rendition of the Hokey Pokey. Our

Cobourg office lead the group in this Canada 150

activity – Group Hokey Pokey. Video evidence will

suggest that this is the largest Hokey Pokey that many

of us have ever witnessed. We will be sharing this with

the Canada 150 organizers to demonstrate our

participation in the Canada wide celebrations.

Marion Langford, of

Creative People Solutions was our guest speaker. Marion talked

about Appreciative Listening and provided some hands on

activities for volunteers and staff to use in their daily interactions

with people. Marion was a wonderful addition to the morning

and everyone enjoyed her humourous approach to the topic.

The morning ended with a light lunch provided by the staff at the

Community Centre with time to visit, share stories and friendship

with all volunteers. It was a great day and from all the staff I want

to send off a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone who was able to

participate.

Volunteer Appreciation Event—Continued from Page 1

For our protection and yours, we require our volunteers to sign a declaration annually indicating they

have had no changes in criminal activity and will continue to respect and abide by agency requirements

for standard of conduct (Volunteer Manual, Policy # V-2-130).

While there are variations in the date this is required in each local office, on an annual basis volunteers

will be required to sign their acknowledgement of the Annual Volunteer Agreement Renewal and a record

will be kept in each local office. The form includes a declaration of offence in follow up to our Vulnerable

Sector Check, a Code of Conduct and Confidentiality renewal, health limitation disclaimer and for those

who provide direct service to clients in their personal vehicle, a disclaimer for valid and current insurance

coverage, drivers license and a commitment to safe driving and vehicle maintenance.
