Community news

Despite problems with the weather this year, entries for all the various

categories in the Test Valley in Bloom annual garden competition have already been received – Private Front Gardens, for Schools Commercial properties and Public Houses, Community Areas and Public Service premises as well as allotments.

Final date for entries for has been set for the 1st July with judging taking place in July . Entry forms are still available at Council Offices, at Libraries and Tourist Information Centres and at many Garden centres through Test Valley.

Following on last year’s successful changes to the judging of the

School Grounds category – all others will now follow suit. No more 1st, 2nd and 3rd - instead ALL entries in each category will be graded and will receive a certificate; Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver or Bronze according to the marks earned (following the guidelines laid down by the national ‘In Bloom’ organisation). This can only be an incentive to improve year on year and move upwards into a higher category .

Are Test Valley gardeners up to the challenge? It does look like it.Any further enquiries, or requests for entry forms, to Ann Wilson, Secretary on 01264 351853.

50 Fab Days Out suggestions include family adventures, picnic and BBQ sites, walks, cycle rides, play areas and other more unusual ideas. And each day out includes practical advice about things to take, time to arrive and what to expect.

Each fab day out has been tried and tested by the children who contributed their ideas for their favourite, fun and exciting places to go. There are ideas for whole days out, as well as places to visit for just a couple of hours - and places to explore all year round.

Catherine Russell, a parent of two children Juliet aged 6 and Joe aged 4, said “This book is really good. I’ve not seen anything else like it on the market. I can't believe there are so many places I hadn't heard about. As a family, we always go to the same places. Now I've got loads more new ideas to try out. I love the parent recommendations and real life quotes from children too. I know these will be great days out because they've come from other families.”

The book includes £40 worth of free vouchers, which will offer a discount to some of the places featured which charge entry fees. Hampshire County Council, Red Funnel Ferries and Sainsburys have lent their support by sponsoring the book. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Compton School Association, a registered charity supporting Compton All Saints Primary School.

50 Fab Days Out for Families is the ideal guide to making memories on a shoestring.

A new book, which is packed full of days out ideas for families, has

become the fastest selling and best local interest book in Winchester.

50 Fab Days Out For Families has been written by local children aged between 4 and 11, who give an inside and personal view of the best, affordable and free places to visit. Fun, adventure and happy families are at the heart of the book and celebrate the best family days out in and around Winchester. 50 Fab Days Out For Families includes new ideas for undiscovered places to explore and a fresh look at some old favourites with expert tips from parents.

The book, which costs £5 and is being sold in Waterstones in Winchester, Southampton and Basingstoke, Caracoli in Alresford or by ordering on line at www.50fabdays.com, has the backing of television personality, actress, Hampshire resident and mother Sarah Parish.

Sarah said "50 Fab Days Out For Families really is a little gem. Packed to the brim with great things for kids of all ages to enjoy. If you are visiting the Winchester area this is a must have, I cannot recommend it enough."

Nestling above the village green at Nether Wallop, in the lane named after it, The Five Bells is a traditional English village freehouse, which has recently been sympathetically renovated to

provide a pleasant ambience for aficionados of real ales and fine wines and freshly prepared good food.

The lovely 18thC building stands in its own grounds of just over an acre, with a garden leading down to the Wallop Brook. Formerly a coaching inn it served as a local alehouse and agricultural store to which the old stables in its grounds testify. But it was at the beginning of World War 2 when The Bells became a prominent pub in the area as aircrew that flew Spitfires and Blenheim nightfighter aircraft in the Battle of Britain from nearby Middle Wallop airfield adopted the Five Bells as a favourite watering hole. That association continued post-war with the arrival of the Army Air Corps at Middle Wallop when the uniforms worn by the clientele of the pub changed from blue to brown.

More recently the pub has became a community centre for residents of the charming and largely untouched village of Nether Wallop, with coffee mornings, a monthly quiz night, and many lunch and dinner time functions. Hidden just 4 miles from Stockbridge and lying between the A343 and A30 main roads, it was certainly no coincidence that when the producers of the first TV series of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marples series were searching for the quintessential English village that they chose Nether Wallop, and The Five Bells as the location for their filming.

T H E F I V E B E l l SnETHER WallOP

Recently acquired by local resident Graham Horder The Five Bells concentrates on providing traditional English food dishes using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients wherever possible which are prepared and cooked on the premises on a daily basis by Chef Jenny Jones who has won many awards for her culinary skills over the last ten years. Dishes range in price from £6.95 to £10.95 and include the Wallop Burger made with Hampshire beef, Welsh Rarebit, home cooked Gammon and free range eggs, home made haddock fishcakes and generously battered fresh cod and chips. Jenny is an accomplished pastry chef so her pudding dishes are always popular; bread and butter pudding with real custard may not be a dish for the calorie conscious diner, but the delicately flavoured lemon posset most certainly is!The Five Bells is an ideal venue for functions and caters for parties of up to 50 in the restaurant and up to 200 people at hog roasts or BBQ events in the marquee in the grounds. There is also a large private car park.

There is no doubt about it, The Five Bells in Nether Wallop is an attractive, economical and very pleasant alternative to the Gastro Pubs of The Test Valley without sacrificing any of the values of excellent dining, fine wines and well kept real ales.

The Five Bells is in Five Bells Lane, Nether Wallop, Stockbridge, SO20 8HA. Telephone 01264 782621, website www.5-Bells.co.uk or interact with The Five Bells on their Facebook pages.

Valley. They worked in teams to build a car and a rocket and won prizes for how far each of them could travel. I hear that some of the cars went backwards to begin with but the children were resilient and eventually got them going in the right direction – well enough to win first prize for both the car and the rocket – well done Year 5!

Of course, it’s not just our older children preparing for transition to a different school but we have this week, welcomed our new reception children in to our school, which was great fun. They had a wonderful time exploring a new classroom and a new outdoor space to the ones they have been used to in their pre-schools. We are now crossing everything hoping for a dry sports afternoon so that they can come and compete in the under 5’s race.

Emma JefferiesDeputy Head teacher

Having recovered from our Royal knees up and got the funny

pattern of bank holidays over and done with, we are now back to normal at school. The summer term is always a busy one in every school and we are no different.

Our Year 5 children have a very busy few weeks ahead of them and our Year 6 children have, at the time of writing, only 6 weeks left of primary school. We make good links with Test Valley School in order to prepare the children for their move to secondary and some of our Year 5 children have been attending a 2 day ‘Challenge It’ course organised by Test Valley School. They have been learning how to challenge themselves to do even better in their everyday learning and how this doesn’t always feel comfortable! It’s very easy when you are an accomplished mathematician or author to stick to what you know you do well and we are trying hard to encourage children to step outside this comfort zone and take risks in order to further their learning.

All Year 5 children also joined other cluster primary schools to take part in a rocket day at Test

METHOD

In a blender add the yoghurt, the cloves from the whole garlic head, coriander seeds, chilli, and lemon juice and blend together until you obtain a smooth paste. Taste and then add salt and pepper as desired. The paste requires a strong flavour as it must penetrate the meat.

Cover the chicken on all sides with the paste and then place into a deep dish. Leave the chicken to marinade for 36 hours, 48 hours is even better. Turn the chicken every few hours to achieve an even marinade.

Cooking day has arrived - with a rubber spatula remove as much of the marinade as possible from the chicken and the dish and keep aside. Light your barbecue, and place the chicken on it when the heat has died down. The barbecue must be gently hot not scalding and definitely no flames as the meat will burn. The embers must be just right, it should take around 40 minutes to be ready. Turn the meat on the barbecue regularly to cook evenly (do the same if you are using the oven). Half way through cooking add the sprigs of rosemary and four half garlic heads. In a pan cook the retained marinade paste thoroughly, add a drop of water or olive oil if the mixture is dry, then add a little finely chopped mint (or fresh coriander) for a delicious fresh flavour.

Serve with grilled vegetables, like slices of aubergine, courgettes, sweet peppers and onions. Some grilled pine kernels sprinkled on top will add that little extra touch.Serves: 4

1 butterflied chicken or a chicken cut into pieces

1 whole garlic head, each clove diced in small pieces

The juice of two lemons

2 soup spoons of crushed coriander seeds.

commissioned Fanfare will launch a 10

day celebration of music, literature and theatre when the Winchester Festival brings a wealth of top performers and authors to the city. This year's programme blends the inspirational talent of youth with the thought-provoking insight of maturity through more than 30 events in Winchester and Alresford.

Festival goers can enjoy a lunchtime recital in the Young Musicians Series; take in an art exhibition; exercise their minds with the likes of economist Will Hutton and broadcaster Peter Snow; then enjoy evening entertainment

as diverse as saxophonist Jan Gabarek with The Hilliard Ensemble and Radio 4 stalwart Barry Cryer in an evening of 'sit-down' comedy.

The baton for this year's opening concert in the Cathedral on Friday 1 July has been handed to Tom Seligman, director of the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. A Festival Fanfare by renowned brass composer Jock McKenzie will herald Mahler's mighty Resurrection Symphony played by the county's finest young musicians to mark the centenary of Mahler's death.www.winchesterfestival.co.uk

Hampshire artists Co-operative SummerExhibition

The Hampshire Artists’ Co-operative’s Summer Exhibition opens at

11am on Saturday 18th June 2011 at Selborne Gallery, The Plestor, Selborne, Hampshire.During this exhibition the

gallery will be featuring guest photographer Richard Brayshaw. Richard left a career in industry in 2002 to pursue his photography full time. In 2006 he completed an Access to an Art and Design course at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham and in 2009 he graduated from there with an MA in Photography. Richard is now combining teaching with his photographic art practice and works from his studio near Alton in Hampshire.

ARTISTS’ SUMMER SHOW WITH GUEST PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD BRAYSHAW.

Richard’s work is a personal exploration of perceptions and psychological responses to our physical environment, both rural and urban. One of the series he is currently working on, entitled ‘edge of darkness’ made in a woodland setting explores Freud’s idea of the uncanny i.e. things which seem familiar and yet are disconcerting. His work is produced using pigment inks for longevity and is normally made in limited editions of 10 prints. Work is signed and numbered on the reverse. He can be contacted on 07708337269, emailed at [email protected] or viewed at www.richard-brayshaw.co.uk

All the permanent artists have produced a stunning new display of work for this show including sculpture, textiles, painting, jewellery, pottery, felt-work, drawing and glassware with prices starting at £10. Gift vouchers may be

purchased and exchanged for a piece of artwork of choice. Why not take advantage of the Art Council’s ‘Own Art’ Scheme which is designed to make buying contemporary work of art available to everyone. Up to £2,000, or as little as £100, can be borrowed and paid back in 10 monthly, interest free, instalments. Please ask for more information at the gallery or visit www.ownart.org.uk

Come and meet the artists who will be delighted to show you their work and explain how it is produced. The exhibition continues until 31st August 2011 with the gallery being open from 11am until 5pm Tuesday until Sunday each week. The gallery is closed on Mondays.

After a lapse of one year Hampshire Open Studios is up and running again. All past participants in this highly popular event will know how hard Wendi Watson worked over a period of nine years

to provide such an exciting and varied event throughout the county. After a long illness it is sad to report Wendi’s death. Pete Gilbert and Anne Middleton have bravely taken up the challenge of resuming the event and they have been delighted at the response there has been from both artists and craftspeople as well as from the public.

Once again artists from all over the county will be opening their homes and studios to visitors between August 20th to 29th. A total of 171 venues will be open and at many of the venues you will be able to watch artists at work who will be happy to discuss their work with you, probably over a cup of tea. The range of artists will be vast including mixed media, photographers, wood workers, sculptors, glass workers and textile artists. There will be several groups exhibiting together to give an even wider choice to look at; most will have items for sale.

In Broughton Bridget Dumper will be displaying her beautiful sculptures in luxurious materials such as green opal and cobalt stone whilst a group at The Barn in Broughton will

have a selection of sculptures, jewellery and paintings which should provide a lot of interest. Sir Harold Hillier Gardens will be showcasing the Best Of Hampshire Artists exhibition as part of the Open Studios project and will be offering a two-for one entry voucher. This is just a small selection of the venues open in the Stockbridge and Test Valley area.

Look out for the cerise Open Studios catalogues that will be available all over the county in a variety of public places or from the artists themselves; just pick one up, plan your trips and see some of the wonderful arts and crafts that Hampshire has to offer.

A summer choral concert, entitled "An English Country Garden" is the

"Many don't know that he studied art at Ealing College of Art in 1963 before he became a professional musician and he has painted and drawn throughout his career. He has had access to all the great rock stars of the last 40-odd years and they have often been the subjects of his artwork especially, of course, The Stones".

City and Guilds Qualified

very reasonable prices, and courteous friendly service from people you can trust in your homeHere's why one of the Test Valley's most trusted carpet cleaning companies is cleaning local, neighbours carpets for a fraction of the normal cost.

Dear Stockbridge Forum Reader. Value conscious local residents

love a great deal. If you need your carpets cleaned

and are looking for an award-winning company who will arrive on time, will be courteous, respectful and above all trustworthy - then you're invited to take advantage one of the three extraordinary value, high quality, carpet and upholstery cleaning deals we're offering new customers -- because we want to give you the chance to get to know our service and to find out how impressively new, fresh and bright your carpets will look when cleaned and freshened by The Carpet Care People.

UpholsteryWe specialise in cleaning and refreshing three piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you'll see!

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Are you tired of hearing about them? Tales of the bankers bonuses are about as exciting as playing Monopoly on a continuous loop and the amounts of money may as well be part of

the same game, £650,000, £2,000,000, £6,000,000 on top of their salaries; “Oh let’s buy Bond Street, Mayfair, a station or two. Have an extra £200, (or is that million), for passing ‘Go’ and a ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card.”

And that’s the issue for us mortals whose public money has gone to shore up the likes of RBS, Northern Rock, Lloyds TSB, (Trouble Subtracting & Balancing), et al. It would appear that having screwed up in a spectacular fashion they have indeed used the ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card to its fullest effect. I wonder if there is any other profession where that could occur without public retribution. Yes, we’ve heard the odd rant, a half hearted enquiry or two, and polite suggestions from Government that such bonuses need to be restricted, but it would seem all of these have conveniently fallen on deaf ears.Had we been French there would have been guillotines erected in the City by now, but no whilst the media continue to fuel the flames we have become resigned, there is nothing we can do.

In the defence of bankers, and I will be brief, whether they be fund managers, brokers or whatever, they do work very long hours under huge amounts of pressure and are literally ‘owned’ by the banks who employ them. The amount of their salary and bonus is only a reflective percentage of what the bank has made globally and they probably pay 45% tax. But actually as I write I’m thinking ‘tough’ they still get way too much and what is tantamount to the banks’ greed and inopportune risk taking has rendered us as a country, how shall we say, a tad overdrawn. In short, they paid themselves bonuses

MONEY MAKES THEWORLD GO ROUND

when they were failing to do a good job and they knew it.So it’s because they have played Monopoly, and indeed monopolies, with our money and we have to pick up the tab that makes us so very angry.

Are we equally angered by other high earners? That cheeky chappy Gary Lineker earns an estimated £6,000,000 from the BBC and no doubt another packet for being the ‘face’ of Walkers crisps, he knows his Cheese and Onion from Prawn Cocktail that one, but it’s allowed because he used to play internationally and once alerted the England manager that Gazza was in tears. National treasure he may be but our licence fees still contribute to his salary.

And then there’s Wayne Rooney who is clearly talented, from the waist down at least, who is paid in the region of £260,000 per week, plus bonuses, to which those devotees who struggle to find their season ticket money contribute.

The relationship between those types of high earners and us is one of parasite and host. The worst that Rooney can do is to not score but the media keeps us fed (if we are interested) with every scrap from the table that is his private life, and we consume it avidly.

Bankers are portrayed as champagne swilling toffs by the press but it’s the bankers who feed from us to the point of, in some cases, our financial ruination. There’s no entertainment value in being bled dry, why should we have to pay for that?

What do you think?Gill Grant
