Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, The end of the 2010 school year is upon us and the prospect of Christmas is just around the corner. 2010 has been a challenging year for all within the St. Patrick’s College community however, as I have mentioned on many occasions, it has also been a year where the St. Patrick’s College Community has grown stronger and closer. I take this opportunity to thank all of the St. Patrick’s College Community for their support during 2010. Each November for the last four years, the College has conducted activities involved in fundraising for the Movember Appeal. As a College for young men we believe that this particular charity has a special significance in that one of the major beneficiaries of this appeal is research into the prevention and treatment of Prostate Cancer. Funds raised from this appeal also go to support the work of Beyond Blue, a charity which works with people suffering from depression. This year we have a number of staff growing the required moustaches, as well as students raising money on a chocolate drive in association with the Enterprise Unit for their Year 11 Work Environment Studies. O’Rourke House has also adopted Movember for their local House Charity for the month. To support the valuable work of our students and staff, the College will donate $500.00 towards the work of this very worthy charity. Next week the staff will complete the End of Semester reports and all reports will be posted on Monday, 6 December. With the mailout there will be your son’s report and a number of other pieces of information. As well I will write to all families in the new year with a further update for the beginning of the 2011 Academic Year. This edition of the Calling will become a “Collectors Item” as it is the last hard copy version. From next year the Calling will be emailed and placed on the College Website each Thursday. Finally, I take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support throughout 2010 and wish all families a Happy, Holy and Safe Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Merry Christmas. With the end of year upon us I would like to sincerely thank all parents for your wonderful support during the year. The role of parents within the College community and with the support of their son is vital to the success of a school. St Patrick’s has had a very successful year and one in which growth has continued to occur. This has been enhanced by the positive role played by our parents.

The end of the school year brings the holidays upon us and in many cases the question of what to do to keep our sons engaged. Hopefully, the holidays will be a time for families to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Most important in this is spending time together. The greatest gift we can give our children is time together. Make the most of these opportunities and enrich your son’s life. Work commitments make this difficult in some cases with the two months holiday for the boys. It is important that you know

where your son is during each day and who he will be with. The media continually informs the Australian public that alcohol plays a significant role in the lives of Australian youth. Those parents with children in secondary school must continually talk to their son about alcohol and reduce all possibilities of involvement with alcohol. I hope everyone enjoys a safe and joyous Christmas.

Start of School Year 2011 —All Years 5, 8, and 12s and any new student in other year levels will commence school on Monday, 24 January. All students will attend from Tuesday, 25 January. It is important that for the commencement of the new school year, every student must have his correct College uniform and adhere to the College Hair and Grooming Policy. Issues that must be addressed include correct Hair and Grooming in line with the College’s Policy;

correct black leather belt; and shiny, black formal school shoes. All students in Years 5 to 11 will be required to have a school back pack or shoulder bag to and from school in 2011. The only bags students may carry around during school hours are small draw string bags. It is important that all students meet these requirements for the start of the new school year.

I would like to thank and congratulate Mrs Sandra Fowlie and the House Deans for the great support they have provided to me this year, as well as the enormous contribution they have made to the St Patrick’s community throughout 2010.

Have a wonderful Christmas.

STUDIES

Despite all its challenges, 2010 appears to have been a strong year academically for the students at St. Patrick’s. This week has been spent compiling final Year 12 results and submitting them to the Queensland Studies Authority. Whilst it is impossible to make predictions regarding actual OP scores which will be awarded by QSA, whatever the outcome the seniors of 2010 can be pleased that they have done their best.

This week has seen students from Years 5-11 completing their final assessment tasks for the year. Attendance and punctuality at the exams has been exemplary. During the exams the boys have been focused and serious. Once again, we hope that the boys are rewarded with improving achievement levels.

Reports will be posted on Monday, 6 December. Parents and boys need to be

aware that the report is for Semester two only. It is not a whole year report. Students in Year 11 will also receive a “Bubble Report”. This report will indicate the rank order of all students in their chosen subjects. This report only will be a whole year report. It is essential that parents and students become aware of the importance of subject rank orders.

COLLEGE DEAN

It has been a huge few weeks farewelling our Year 12 students and supporting them through their final exams. The genuine support and care shown to our Seniors by the staff and students was a fine example of the sense of community at St Patrick’s. Two images stand out for me over the last two weeks. The site of Ryan Hill physically unable to take that last step out of the front gates of the College after the Year 12 Farewell Assembly, highlighted what this place means to so many of our young men. Ryan simply did not want to leave this special place. The second image was of Luke Reynolds (College Dux) and Tory Ogden (IP Dux) standing together on the stage at the Celebration of Excellence. The sight of two young men who had worked so hard to achieve their goals was wonderful. Tory had dreamt of

winning an academic prize but did not think it would eventually happen. Luke has worked extremely hard for years to be the highest achieving student at St Patrick’s in 2010. Both young men should be inspiration for all our younger students. I leave on Monday with Father Horsfall, Mr Hawkins, Mr Phillips and eight Year 11 students for an Immersion to India. It is my third trip to India in as many years and I particularly am looking forward to once again meeting some of the wonderful people over there. The joy they show with our simple visit is overwhelming. As we talk with our Paddies Van the Theology of Presence is very powerful. Simply being with someone is the greatest gift we can provide.

This year certainly has been a test of character for St Patrick’s. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me this year. It has been a joy to be a part of this community during such testing times. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and are able to spend some quality time with those that you love. Simply being present with someone is something to be valued above all else.

STUDIES CONT’D Where a student is placed in relation to his peers is one of the most significant issues in OP calculations. For example, if a students receives a C+ for a subject, this is good.

However if that C+ places the student at 50th position in the rank order, when there may only be 55 students doing the subject, then the result is not as strong as it appears on the surface. As well as

achieving the highest result he can, students must be conscious that they also need to be as close to the top of the rank order as possible. It is much better if the “C+” places the student at number 20 out of a subject of 55 boys rather than being placed at number 50. This is not a factor for students in Years 5-10 but will become very important once students move into Years 11 and 12.

We look forward to 2011. We have many initiatives, headed by our laptop program in 7-9. We have new curriculum structures and we will face many new challenges. I wish all parents and boys a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

IDENTITY & MINISTRY

Dear members of the St Patrick’s College Community As I write this, I am busily trying to complete all of my end of year tasks – cleaning and packing up my office, marking assignments, writing reports, and so on. As I leave for India on Monday with Fr Liam, Mr David Gardiner, Mr Michael Phillips and a group of eight Yr 11 boys, I feel under some pressure to make sure everything is sorted before I leave, both at work and at home. When you’re busy and feel snowed under, often a new perspective is needed. Priorities need to be made. I had a harsh lesson in perspective recently when I heard the news that one of my best friends had passed away suddenly. He was only a young man of 33 years, and his Memorial Service is in fact tomorrow. As he had very little family, we as his friendship group have taken responsibility for memorial service proceedings – this has been both a difficult but rewarding task. I feel honoured to have the privilege of assisting to organise a celebration of my friend’s life, and I feel

even closer to my friendship group now than I did before. This experience has forced me to re-assess my priorities, to ask myself what is it in my life which is most important. Often, it unfortunately takes difficult experiences for us to ask the tough but important questions. Sometimes, we need to face challenges, and to step out of our comfort zones. This year has seen us all have to do this. Elliott’s tragic passing along with the lost youth of another student brought suffering and pain to families and to our community, but as a result, we also experienced growth as people and as a College community. We changed the way we saw each other, and the way we saw our community. Our perspective was altered and our community was in some ways enhanced; as the Christ story teaches us, suffering does lead to growth and salvation. Furthermore, the reason we provide an opportunity for staff and students to visit India, in particular the leper colonies, hospitals and orphanages in and around Kolkata, is to gently push the participants out of their respective comfort zones so

they too can grow as human beings. Indeed, I have no doubt that my own experience in India in the coming weeks will alter my own perspective on life and my role in the world, and I look forward to this transformation of heart and mind. Yes, as I sit here busily trying to complete tasks and tick items off my “To Do List”, I am reminded through my friend’s passing, through February 15 of this year, and through my upcoming immersion to India that I must continually re-assess what is most important in my life. Put simply, these experiences force us to look at our own humanity, and when we do this, we become closer to our God, for we are after all created in the image of God. Christmas is of course the time of year where we ponder the important aspects of our life – our families, our faith, our role to serve others. I wish all in the St Patrick’s community every blessing this Christmas. Stay safe, and enjoy the break.

DIRECTOR OF SPORT—LUKE DONATINI As this is the last Calling for 2010, I would like to thank all those who have assisted in making SPC Sport this year so successful. We witnessed some exceptional performances throughout 2010. To all the SPC students, their parents, coaches and supporters, I would like to extend my gratitude and thanks for your commitment and support of our sporting program. I would like to especially thank all the sports specific coordinators for what they have achieved this year in their respective sport/s and their dedication to making SPC Sport both enjoyable and continually successful each year. I believe we have achieved an enormous amount in 2010 and the preparation for 2011 sport is well and truly under way and looking even more promising. The positive evolution of our sporting program at St Patrick’s is a credit to everyone involved. Many thanks to our administration team for their ‘behind the scenes’ efforts with making sure that our sport is running smoothly each and every week. Thank you Ryan, Donna, Elias and Corey! To the College Leadership Team, who have supported both myself and the program. Their support and faith in what we are trying to establish sporting wise is sincerely appreciated. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the great work of our ground staff and maintenance crew at St Patrick’s College. Very rarely do they ever complain when asked for assistance in the set up and pack up of equipment or the preparation of grounds and facilities for our sport. More often than not they are the first to volunteer to assist in what we put together for the students of St Patrick’s College. We are extremely lucky to have such staff as well as a close knitted community who love their sport and are all striving for the betterment of the SPC sporting program. I truly hope that you all have a very safe and joyous Christmas spent with family and friends and a refreshing break over the coming weeks. I look forward to 2011 and for what is looking like an equally (if not better) successful sporting year ahead. Merry Christmas and once again THANKYOU! St Patrick’s College Family Home Stays Over the past months we have received some enquiries and interest from families living in regional areas asking whether St Patrick’s College were able to accommodate their son. From such enquiries both Dr Carroll and I have had

lengthy discussions and we would like to explore the avenue of possible future ‘Home Stay’ situations that may be a viable option for such regional families giving their son the opportunity to attend St Patrick’s College. If there are any current St Patrick’s College families who may be interested in being part of this potential ‘Home Stay Program’, we ask that you contact Mr Donatini (Director of Sport) during College working hours for further information. Mr Donatini can be contacted on 3631 9029 or alternately [email protected] Congratulations on Recent Success

Richard Cook (Year 6) and Callum Thompson (Year 6) - Both have been representing Metropolitan North Cricket in the Les McCasker Trophy Competition. Their team won the McCasker Trophy being undefeated in the competition. They won their last game with one ball to spare! Both boys played really well throughout the season. Well done to both Richard and Callum.

ACTIVITIES CONT’D

St. Patrick’s Swimming in Season 2010/2011

With Term 4 coming to a close, it is imperative the boys continue to train and maintain their swimming fitness over the holiday break. If your son is not already training with a club, I would like to encourage him to give the Ken Wood Swim School at Sydney st, Redcliffe a go. There are a range of squads and lessons available ranging from stroke correction and technique work, right through to elite national training squads. The coaching here is the best available and would give your son the best chance of improving. Ken has offered to coach St. Patrick’s College students for $8 a session with most squads running from 3:45 to 5pm in the afternoon (National squads run after 5pm). If this appeals to you please email Ken on [email protected] Swimming will again start from Thursday, January 27 in Term 1 of next year. Training times and venues are as follows: MONDAY (SANDGATE POOL): 6:15am – 7:30am

TUESDAY (SANDGATE POOL): 6:15am – 7:30am WEDNESDAY (REDCLIFFE POOL, SYDNEY ST REDCLIFFE): 5:45am – 7:30am THURSDAY (REDCLIFFE POOL, SYDNEY ST REDCLIFFE): 3:45pm – 5:00pm There will be buses to take the boys to school after morning training and a bus take the boys to Thursday afternoon training at Redcliffe. Parents will need to drop the boys off to morning training and pick up after Thursday training. Could all boys please wear their St. Pat’s swim caps and bring swim fins if they have them. The College has purchased a limited supply of fins for the boys but we will run out, particularly in the bigger sizes.

The swim camp this year runs from Sunday the 9th of January until Wednesday the 12th of January and is at the Gold Coast Sports Super Centre, Runaway Bay. The cost for the 4 days is $305.00. This includes all meals, use of state of the art training facilities and accommodation. The cost has risen this year due to the Sports Super Centre increasing their prices. Over the course of the 4 days, the boys will be training up to 3 sessions per day, plus engaging in a mini-lifesaving carnival, trips to the beach and the movies. Every year places fill very fast for the camp so if interested please contact Ms Donna Day at the front office today. Letters are available at the Student Office for collection.

DIRECTOR OF CULTURE—GEOFF SAMUELS

HARVEST RAIN’S ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE PROGRAM Harvest Rain Theatre Company would like to offer St Patrick’s College the exclusive opportunity to become the one of four schools to house the 2011 Artistic Excellence Program. This twelve month program will align St Patrick’s College with Queensland’s largest independent theatre company and allow St Patrick’s College students and staff the opportunity to work exclusively with industry professionals in a project designed to develop and enrich the school artistically and creatively.

WHAT IS THE ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE PROGRAM? The Artistic Excellence Program sets the school apart as a centre for artistic excellence and further develops the skills and experience of a select group of students whose passion for the arts will be fuelled by their exposure to theatre productions of the highest quality and their mentorship and guidance from industry professionals. The 2011 Artistic Excellence Program will create a four-school alliance between the institutions that house the program, creating an artistic network of students across Brisbane who can connect and interact with other like-minded young artists

Ordination to the Presbyterate of Bryan Roe

Bryan Gerard Roe was a student of St Patrick’s College from Year 4 through to Year 12 when he graduated in 1986. While at the College, Bryan was an above average academic student and represented his College in Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics (1500m) and 1st IV Tennis. Bryan felt the Call to the Priesthood at the age of 12 as an altar server at Sacred Heart, Sandgate, but put it on hold to further a Professional Tennis career. At the Australian Open, 1988, he narrowly went down to World Number 5, Ivan Lendl, having had one Match Point. In 1989, Bryan suddenly contracted Guillain-Barre disease, named after the French Doctors who worked it out, which left him paralysed for a while and in a wheel chair for three years. During his convalescence, Bryan pursued the University Degrees of Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Business. Then he continued studying to complete a Master Degree in IT and a Master of Theology. Bryan returned to accept his Call, was received by the Archbishop of Brisbane and now, the first from his Alma Mater in three decades, will be ordained to the Presbyterate, Priesthood, on Wednesday 8th December at 7.30pm in the Cathedral of St Stephen. St Patrick’s College rejoices with Bryan. Congratulations.

As Peter Bancroft returns to the role of Mooney House Dean in 2011, I wanted to communicate my sincere thank you to the parents of Mooney House on their warm welcome and continuing support of our boys. I also wanted to thank the fantastic Mooney staff, whose genuine care for the boys and professional approach is paramount to making Mooney a home away from home. To the students of Mooney House, I have fond memories of marshmallow wars, afternoon delight and Mr Gunn’s giant wolf paw. Thank you for the enthusiasm you bring to house activities and good luck for 2011.

P & F Dear Parents and Friends, First, I must apologise for not submitting an update of the P&F since the AGM. I would like to acknowledge and thank the committee for 2010 and all their efforts throughout the year. I look forward to working with Peter, Maxine and Lesley in maintaining the high level of participation and co-operation with the school into the future. I don’t know about other parents in the community, but I find this time of year particularly busy and stressful. And of course, this year, it is the added concerns about ‘Schoolies, as our second child but first son attends the “rite of passage” on the Gold Coast. Thank goodness for the wise words of Celia Lashlie that have been ringing in my head since her wonderful and entertaining presentation. I would like to thank all the Mums who helped on the night with the tickets and supper and acknowledge the support given by the P&F to the school. As a first time parent of a Paddy’s boy, I need to say thank you to the school for two vital rituals in which both the boys and their parents have had to participate to mark the end of their St Patrick’s journey. I am so happy I made the effort to attend my son’s last assembly. The entrance into the Callan Centre by the Houses, the Senior video, that wonderful new song sung by one thousand male voices, the school song and then the tunnel as the boys left the grounds! Even now, as I write this, I get goosebumps-and I’m a “mature age boy”. And then Graduation on Thursday night, a ceremony that marked the real end. The Mass was wonderful but can we make it Mums and Dads in the choir? A new challenge perhaps for the P&F in 2011? The dinner was great, the company was wonderful and then, again, the ritual associated with our sons leaving St Patrick’s. On behalf of the P&F, I would like to say thank you to Mrs Judy White and Mrs Claire Keen for their fantastic speeches to the boys. Truly inspirational! And once more, that video presentation! It really is quite amazing how the combination of music and images engenders such a strong response from the audience. Embarrassing as well for the boy who is your son but I’m sure he was quite pleased to see himself up there, on the big screen. The final montage of the boys as babies was exceptionally moving. As for the P&F, it was decided at last Wednesday night’s meeting to make a contribution to the Memorial Garden. This will take the form of the P&F contributing to the cost of the plaques which will form an integral part of the Garden. So, 2010 ends. And as a parent of two boys at St Pat’s, this year has been particularly challenging. I would just like to say, THANK YOU. On behalf of the P&F, Merry Christmas and a Happy and Wonderful New Year to the entire St Patrick’s College community. Regards, Malcolm Steele.
