This year the School’s Open Day for prospective Year 8’s for 2014 was Thursday 4th May, and once again the Old Scholars assisted

the school with a barbeque held at recess and lunch times for the visitors and students of the school.

This year we were very lucky to have four supporters help us with cooking and serving the barbeque and selling cool drinks. They

were Barry Lane, who picked up the barbeque and brought it to the school with David Buttery & Barry Smith helped him and Dina

Boehm who isn’t an Old Scholar but helps us on many occasions. This year we had senior SRC students help with the serving at re-

cess and lunch breaks and without all of this help it would not have been possible to serve the hoards .

The Committee would like to acknowledge their wonderful support on the day and without this help we certainly wouldn't have

pulled it off. A huge thank you from the Committee, it is very much appreciated.

Marryatville High School’s Big Band 1 was awarded 1st place in Division

One of the Generations in Jazz National Stage Band award for an un-

precedented 3rd year in a row. Big Band 2 won 3rd place in Division Two

and the Pops Vocal ensemble won 3rd place in the Division One of the

vocal competition.

Marryatville entered three big bands and two jazz vocal ensembles into

the competition: 74 students in total. All of our students performed at their

best and achieved great results in their sections. The junior students, es-

pecially, learned the high standard of achievement possible with focussed

hard work.

The students who participated have not only enjoyed a festival of great

music, but have learned how to improve their own playing. The growing

success of instrumental and vocal jazz at Marryatville, has been accomplished by the excellent music program and dedicated staff

at the Special Interest Music Centre and the Instrumental Music Service. Despite many and varied changes in education in SA, our

teachers continue to dedicate themselves to the musical education of the students which include many extra hours of work above

their teaching loads. Thanks to the music staff Jasmin Bowden, Emma Borgas, and Jason Hammond and Rob Chenoweth and

David Winnall from the Instrumental Music Service.

The weekend competition includes workshops and two big concerts of outstanding jazz talent including James Morrison, Gordon

Goodwin, The Idea of North and the Big Phat Band from Los Angeles. Notable was the presence of MHS SIMC past students who

themselves are now professional musicians: Naomi Crellin and Sally Cameron from the Idea of North, guitarist James Muller, not to

mention those who now teach at the many schools repre-

sented.

A highlight of the weekend was the opportunity to listen to

and learn from world renowned composer and musician

Gordon Goodwin and the Big Phat Band. Their masterful per-

formances and excellent music was supported by wise words

of advice to students.

Notable on the weekend was year 11 student David Goodwin

who was chosen to be a finalist for the James Morrison Jazz

Scholarship. David played extremely well, and although he

did not win, he demonstrated a high level of musicianship in a

National cohort of 20 year olds.

New Science Laboratories

– New Learning Centre

It’s an exciting time for the Science Faculty.

The new spaces which will cater for the

new pedagogies proposed for the

21st Century, are taking shape at the rear of

the school grounds. A vast improvement on

the previous labs. giving the students and

staff a new wonderful learning and work

environment.
