11 –– MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM RRIICCHHAARRDD Sound Connections Family! This month there are many new folks signing on as new readers so on behalf of the entire readership of Sound Connections we say, “Welcome to the Sound Connections F As y

amily!” ou can imagine, the month before our Sound

e.

Connections music conference it is crazy busy around herRegistrations are brisk and we are ahead in numbers from where we were this timelast year. This is an especially special Sound Connections as it is going on symbiotically with Unity’s 11 Days of Unity celebration (Sept. 11 – 21). See Chapter three for more info on how you can participate in this special season at yourchurch. Your Music Ministry Team is gearing up to serve you and stepping forward in ways we never have before. If you are not registered yet, please hurry. Space on grounds is going fast. Well, you may have noticed that this is the 41st issue of Sound Connections. With 40 metaphysically being a number of completion or the end of a cycle (40 years in the wilderness, 40 days and nights of rain, Jesus’ 40 days in the desert), I felt it was time to move into a different phase for this newsletter. So beginning next month Sound Connections will be published by the Association Music Ministry Team as a group! There will be new features on specific topics, as each team member has his/her own area of expertise to contribute. I feel this will give us an influx of new and fresh ideas and content that will continually change to fit our needs, much more so than one person (me) could do. One of the new features we’d like to begin as soon as possible is our “Prayer Corner” where we will take your prayer requests. The most sacred way we show up AS God in the world is by praying for each other. If you have a challenge or a victory (gratitude is a prayer too), that you would like support in, just email it to me and I will post it for the group to take into prayer. This could be a health challenge, or safe travel, selling a house or finding the perfect drummer, drawing to you a new PA system or the perfect job. I urge you to use this opportunity to allow the Universe to prove the power of prayer in your life. Of course there are still opportunities for you to contribute as well in the usual ways. Send us your letters, comments, suggestions. Write a feature on a topic you are passionate about. Review a CD or an artist who has visited your church. We want and need your input to make this a valuable resource for you. Enjoy this issue. There’s a lot of great material and information for you including this month’s free sheet music download. Enjoy! Always remember: You are crucial to the growth of the New Thought movement. You can and DO make a difference! CELEBRATE 11 DAYS Of UNITY at your CHURCH or CENTER

This year from September 11 (Unity World Day of Prayer) through September 21 (United Nations International Day of Peace), Unity School of Christianity, the Association of Unity Churches International, and the Association for Global New Thought will join in a worldwide celebration of oneness. They are joining with hundreds of other organizations collaborating under the umbrella “We, The World.” In 2004 We, The World (www.WeTheWorld.org ) launched 11 Days of Global Unity as a breakthrough platform for linking local awareness and action campaigns into an inspiring international movement for peace, sustainability and transformation. Supporters of the launch included Nobel Peace Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu and 11 Days Honorary Co-Chairs Jane Goodall, Deepak Chopra, Irene Khan (Secretary General of Amnesty International), Marianne Williamson, John McConnell (the original Founder of Earth Day), Hazel Henderson, Ervin Laszlo, Jonathan Granoff, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Robert Thurman, Sally Fisher, Riane Eisler, Lynne Twist, Paul Winter, Nina Meyerhof, and New York City Councilman Alan J. Gerson. Annually, 11 Days includes more than 700 concerts, festivals, Web casts, and many other activities, in more than 60 countries around the world. By combining artistic presentations, inspiration, consciousness-raising and social actions, 11 Days embodies the strategy of Inspire, Inform and Involve to create a world that works for all. Unity is inviting participation from the field in events for celebrating oneness and healing our world. Included in the week’s activities at Unity Village will be the Fourth Annual Posi Awards on September 14, and the Mega-PosiPalooza Concert on September 15, featuring the top artists in Posi and New Thought music. There will be a Transformational Film Festival on Tuesday, September 16, a one man play, “Liberating Jesus”, on Wednesday September 17, and the closing concert of the Sound Connections Music conference on Friday, September 19 featuring David Roth, Tom Kimmel, Penny Nichols, Leroy White Christine Stevens and others. Special speakers and authors will also be on hand including Aruhn Gandhi, Lynn McTaggart, and Greg Braden. For a complete schedule of the week’s events go to www.11daysofunity.org .

Unity Village invites your church or community to join in the activities. You could have a Peace Concert, show an inspirational film, have a drumming circle or an “Earth Dance” celebration. Visit www.11daysofunity.org to get ideas and materials on events and activities you can plan at your church. Document your events with pictures Unity will use to create a video to share with the world. From the Web site you can also see what other communities are doing and feel connected with the global family in Celebrating Oneness, and Healing the World.

Bring this awesome artist to your church or center!

Dr. Joseph Akins Joseph is an award-winning pianist, composer, and recording artist based near Nashville, Tennessee. For many years, he performed in notable county, rock and jazz groups, but over the past 10 years, he has released two critically acclaimed CDs of original spiritual music titled “Keys to the Heart” and “Masterpeace” and has been performing this music for New Thought churches and other venues every where. He is also holds a doctorate in education and is a professor of music industry at

Middle Tennessee State University. At age 28, Joseph began to experience health problems that challenged a promising career in music, and the only solution his doctors gave him was to switch to another career. Rather, he began to experience the healing power of music and turned to composing spiritual music. Christ Unity in Chattanooga, Tennessee, gave him the loving encouragement and avenue to heal and perform his new music. “When I first found Unity, I knew I had found a home to heal. I didn’t know that I would eventually be writing and performing music to help others do the same.” Fifteen years later, Joseph has now performed at several New Thought churches and other venues everywhere to share his heartfelt music and continues to seek for more opportunities. What Others Have to Say: "Our Fellowship is always moved and delighted by Joseph Akins wonderful, soul-filling music; he never fails to illicit rave reviews from our group. Moreover, Joseph is a consummate professional, an artist and performer at the peak of his considerable skills. His music is mysterious in its power to deeply touch the heart and warm the senses -- Joseph Akins is a musical shaman!" - Dr. Bob Pondillo, Chair/Chaplain, Unitarian Fellowship of Murfreesboro "Joseph's music is deeply moving, sacred & spiritual and takes the soul on a glorious journey - it paints beautiful images in the mind while haunting notes and rhythms edge open the heart. Simply beautiful." Rev.'s Dyann & Michael Woody, Music City Center for Spiritual Living "I highly recommend Joseph Akins for your church. He is an incredibly talented, inspiring pianist whose music is uplifting and beautiful. He has a special gift for expressing his talent to our congregation in a deeply moving way". Natalie Ottobrino, New Horizons Center For Spiritual Living Services: Joseph can be a guest artist for your church service, which usually consists of him playing two of his original heartfelt songs for your congregation. This follows well after a reading of the Daily Word, guided meditation, or offertory. An additional service Joseph is able to offer is piano/keyboard accompaniment. This could include guided meditation music (behind another person speaking) and/or hymnal accompaniment for your choir or congregation. Joseph is often asked to appear as a guest artist whenever the regular accompanist needs a substitute. Joseph has over 14 years

experience as an accompanist for Unity churches. Perfect for an evening or afternoon, Joseph can provide a piano concert with storytelling and audience participation. This is usually around 1 hour in length and allows Joseph to play more of his music and talk about the spiritual inspiration behind it. In addition, Joseph and the participants will together create a spontaneous healing composition. If an overhead projector is available, Joseph will spontaneously perform as you view a video of beautiful nature shot by Joseph himself. People describe this experience as truly uplifting and transformational. This can even be done for your service as the lesson (a musical service) if desired. Other services Joseph is able to offer while visiting your church are private lessons or workshops on songwriting, music improvisation and composition. He can work with members of all ages and backgrounds to help them empower their creativity. To hear examples of Joseph’s newest CD, go to: ww.josephakins.com/TheMusic/masterpeace.htm To book Joseph or for more info, call direct at (615) 473-7127, or email at: [email protected]

A perfect song for those seeking healing, "Things that do not serve me" is a beautiful reflection on possible ways to cleanse the body temple, freeing it of disease. SCOTT BECK FROM THE ROAD Richard ~ Just wanted to let you know how grateful I am for featuring my article in the July issue of Sound Connections. I was surprised you were able to get it in so quickly, with as many deserving musicians out there who also love to share their beautiful music; so, thank you from my heart. I already got an email from a minister from a Unity church in Ft. Wayne, IN asking me if I would be available when going through their area. I know good things happen as a result of your kindness and assistance, not only to me but to all those you serve in getting our positive music noticed. Again, thank you.
