Mothers Day

Sunday 10th March we will all have our own intimate ways to show how much we care for the most important woman in

our lives. Our mothers are mostly characterised as being loving, nurturing, and selfless. If you are lucky they are mouthwateringly good cooks however, they can often have irritating traits such as selective hearing and speaking their minds when they were not asked. Well, enough about me.

Our mums are the woman who came to parents evening with a note pad and didn’t talk to you all the way home because she was not happy with what she heard. She requested that if you wanted to sleep over at your friends house, that their parent had to call and when you just wanted to go to your friends birthday party, she collected your half an hour early; she also bought us new school shoes for our birthday. Oh this is about me again.

Mums knows how we are feeling before we tell them, encourages us when we don’t believe in ourselves; she is the first port of call when anything goes wrong, she drops what she is doing to tend to our needs, and never stops thinking we are her ‘little munchkin”.

Quincy – The comedian On Mothers Day, I’ll be cooking for her (Chicken, I’m

black!) as I dabble in the kitchen now. I’d say she is “Loving,

Considerate, Lenient.”

LaLah haThaway

My Mom has always seemed something like Christmas to me,

which is why I try to be near her all the time.” I’d describe her

as “the last of her kind” “Christmas”

LIC asked two celebrities to describe their mothers using the letter L and C. Now whatever you feel about your mum, show her love, you only get one mother. Happy mothers day.

New years night I sit in front of the TV assessing my year

and watching Jools Holland’s Hootenanny. To be honest it was a long cold look at my life, but that sounds like I was depressed and I was actually quite up beat. I’m not one to do new years resolutions but I know that 2013 will hold a lot of challenges for me but I will also be hitting a lot of milestones along the way. I’m hardly into January and I am asked to sing at an event in Harlesden (Yeah!) They want a personal song with an optimistic message. Well, I do have a couple of songs that I wrote on my guitar although my playing is still not even grade 1 standard yet. As usual on the day I have the usual tussle with my wardrobe – I opt for a snazzy, African print top with some slim fitting jeans although I do worry if my thighs look too big. At the venue I have arranged for two poet friends of mine – a guy and girl, to do an improvisation in the middle of one of my songs called ‘Choices.’ It’s all about being in a destructive relationship and that however badly someone behaves it does not give you the excuse to join in. It’s a community event so start times and staging is a bit ropey. The vibe is good, with many helpful hands available and a scarce supply of skill. I quickly learn that the technician has misplaced a mic stand so the guitar won’t be heard while I sing.

Mid crisis, the MC introduces me. There is a kafuffle on stage as the ‘helpful hands’ try to tape mic’s to the only stand. My poet friend decides to just hold the microphone while I perform. This makes me worry as we had rehearsed this big confrontation. How will it work now? So, my first line, ‘A simple question brings and argument and hope for our love begins to fade.’ Everything is sounding good so far, but what of the rest? My girl friend enters the stage and shouts at my other friends back, they improvise, I adlib, they reach a peak and are ready to come to physical blows, I take over vocally and end the song on a high. The audience are rapturous. This has confirmed my resolve that no matter what, I will continue to be the best I can and celebrate life in whatever way it presents itself.

Born of music royalty and the kith and kin of a legend, Donny Hathaway’s daughter is like a beautiful, silent storm,

ever present, consistently soothing with her rich silky vocal tones. Having enjoyed early success in the 90’s with, ‘Heaven Knows,’ ‘Baby Don’t Cry,’ ‘Something’ and ‘I’m coming Back’ this trained pianist and vocalist graduated from the Berklee School of Music and since then we have seen her career soar and span over 21 years.

This is not a ‘wanna be’ artist trying to forge a profession

on the back of her father’s name but a true artist, musician and entertainer in her own right. Boy can she sing. And her voice just like her personality has so much class there needs to be a new word to describe it. In 1994 her second album came out which saw her exploring different styles of music and with a Sly & the Family Stone remake “It’s a Family Affair,” and the soul-stirring, fan favorite ballad “Separate Ways.” 1999 brought the release of the critically acclaimed duet CD The Song Lives On with legendary jazz musician Joe Sample. The songs “Fever” and “When Your Life Was Low” were highlights. After splitting with her label Virgin Records it was 10 years before another release. 2011 marked the release of her 5th solo studio album ‘Where it all Begins’ produced by music stalwart JR Huthson,

Understated, anyone who intends to pursue a career in music needs to get up to speed and add her songs to their downloads. Lalah has been quoted, “My hope is to continue to make timeless art for people…in a way I feel like my dad came here in part so that I could get here- and I am here so that he can stay here. I was born for this.”

Theatre Royal Stratford East’s “Life affirming”, musical theatre production of Glasgow Girls is a compelling and emotionally charged show that captures the strength of the human spirit. It is based on the true story of seven teenage girls who are driven by a fierce sense of injustice to fight for the rights of the children of asylum seekers and succeed where adults and politicians have often failed. Life in Colour talks to the singer/songwriter and newbie actress, Patricia Panther about her role. Candace: Describe yourself with 5 words beginning with L and C.Patricia: Hmmm, I’d say colourful. I like rainbows and music. I’d say I’m loving, communicative (I love to talk!), lively and capable.Candace: There are a lot of contemporary urban musicals around right now what makes Glasgow Girls different?Patricia: I’m from Scotland so being part of this production shows the very few Black Scottish actresses out there that we can become more mainstream.Candace: Themes of injustice, equality, strength and unity are very apparent in this production. Were these easy characteristics to portray?Patricia: I actually play the opposing side to these qualities so I’m the one inflicting injustice on these other girls and trying to deter them from what they are trying to do. Parts of my character appear to be trying to do better for myself but in the end my original nature takes over and it makes me look bad anyway.Candace: What are you enjoying most about the creative process?Patricia: The team for sure, When I was first introduced to everyone, I did not know the story line at all but I was able to bounce my ideas off others and develop my craft.
